Out of the ‘BOX’

The project revisits the office typology and employs a modern approach to the workplace wherein desks aren’t bound within walls but are instead a part of a larger neighbourhood that encourages interaction, communication and ideation of startups while helping one form a network of professionals.

This creates a set of formal offices, informal transitional co-working, addon steel pods of common spaces & larger breakout atriums & garden spaces.

The building is designed on a land parcel fronting the Irla Nala in the JVPD scheme of Mumbai, midst of medium to high rise residential buildings alongside a mix of educational institutions and medical facilities.

The design is a collaborative mix of spaces that cater to users from students to young professionals, budding entrepreneurs to experienced professionals thus creating a space for discussions, development and incubation for new startups and ideas.

Vertical Living

The project is designed as a housing and recreational scheme in the upcoming financial district of GIFT City near Ahmedabad, Gujarat catering to young professionals and their families who move for work .

The units are divided vertically such that the 22 storey buildings are split into 6 floors each consisting of 3, 4 and 5 BHK apartments respectively as one moves up.

It is conceptualised as a center for development and growth for expats who move into the new commercial development. The project boasts of over 1000 residential units across a sprawling 1.5 million square feet, 70 meters high and on a plot of 4,10,000 sq.ft.

The ground level, 13th floor and terrace are organised in the form of co-working spaces and amenities for residents of the subsequent levels to reduce load on the common plot. The latter half is designed as a pedestrian commercial complex and the podium creates additional garden spaces such that open ground provided is over 100% of the plot size.

Guallart Architects

Internship - 2020, Barcelona

As an intern under Vicente Guallart, (Founder, IAAC & Chief, Barcelona City Council)

I worked on a competition for a science campus on the Shenzhen-Hong Kong border closely with the team in Barcelona and China. This internship provided exposure in terms of interactive sessions with architects from offices of the likes of Herzog and De Meuron, Norman Foster, etc which further helped enrich design understanding and the practical aspects of projects of this scale.

The project, spread over 10 million square meters comprises of workstations, laboratories, research facilities, residential towers, offices and recreational spaces alongside a bridge crossing over from Shenzhen to Hong Kong across the river.

The complex, designed in timber is designed in multiple blocks divided by pedestrian and vehicular streets connecting them. The terrace acts as a green paddy farm replicating the fields arond and thus providing to create an ecosystem of migratory birds.

Shigeru Ban in Jaisalmer

The visitors center in Jaisalmer is designed keeping in mind the strong context that it sits in and the informal nature of streets and people that it responds to. The project bases itself in the entrance of the fort precinct and acts as a ticketing and movement control center as well as a visitors reception zone consisting of a restaurant, exhibition space, gallery and meeting rooms that cater to the masses who visit the fort on a regular basis. The primary objective remains to have an inviting building that doesn’t overpower the historic site.

The design is inspired from Shigeru Ban’s work, primarily in Japan and further overseas in changing contexts where principles remain constant while the response to surrondings and prevalent technologies changes the details alongside material palettes and design styles.

The project incorporates various principles observed in a detailed study of Ban’s work and then contextualises it into a strong context of Jaisalmer where stone construction prevails. Heavy stones are optimised to appear light to adhere to his work in paper.

Cafe and Caretakers Residence

The project is designed in a precinct alongside designs by 10 different architects serving various other purposes , i.e. Residences, Workspaces, Common Amenities, Gallery, Exhibition Space, water tank, etc. These follow unrelated design styles but continue to adhere to bylaws and constructional margins. The design is limited to a site area of 150 sq.m and adheres to conventional constructional methods of brick cavity walls and concrete slabs for the house whereas the cafe is designed as a pavillion in steel and wood

05The ground floor comprises of the kitchen, reception, waiting area, the dining pavillion by the pool and a set of common restrooms for all the users from units around who gather here for all their meals. The first floor comprises of a house, for the caretaker and his family, complete with a bedroom, living area, open kitchen & a shower used by a family of 3. An internal staircase in wood and steel comprises of the major storage in the house and leads one to the terrace which acts as the families common space.

Playgroup Studio

Internship - 2020, Goa

As an intern at Playgroup Studio, I worked on various projects, largely in the residential and institutional realm. The office employs an approach of creating a set of rules and modifying them to achieve a set of patterns leading to a design.

Major projects that I worked on were: Redevelopment of Fort Aguada, 3 villas at Siolim, a Bungalow at Aldeia de Goa, The Safi Arts College, a set of 6 villas and 4 condominiums for a developer, a private Auditorium and beachside villaments designed in Correan style.

1. THE 3 VILLAS AT SIOLIM

The villas are designed on a sloping site at split levels around existing trees that modify the design while the set of requirements remain constant in a 4 bedroom house with a pool, common spaces over 3 floors and a garden.

2. BUNGALOW AT ALDEIA DE GOA

The luxurious bungalow is designed for a family of four such that a rear L-shaped wing forms the private core of the house while a central glazed cube comprises of the common shared amenities for the family and visitors.

4 BHK Bungalow

Designed in 2021 in Modasa, Gujarat - The row house caters to a family of 3. The Shared wall dawns a vertical garden and creates a backdrop for the common spaces. The interiors are designed to flow into one another to avoid cluttering and to provide a sense of expanse to the users in an otherwise crunched space limiting room sizes if placed conventionally. The house is spread across 3 levels and occupies the balconies and terraces as primary breakout and green spaces due to lack of open areas at the ground floor level.

Foldable Roofing

The winter school dealt with learning the use of softwares like Rhinoceros, Arduino, Grasshopper coupled with physical models to create scaled prototypes of foldable or programmable roofing structures that could dynamically alter the nature of a space they’re deployed in. The roof below is a crossover of origami folds and programmable structures.

Computational Sheds

The structure was developed as a part of a course aimed at understanding rhinoceros + grasshopper as an advanced modelling software but further translating the models into 1:1 scale designs. The structure below was conceptualised as a resting shelter. The parts are generated digitally, fabricated (CNC ) and assembled on site.

Architechtonic Graphics

The design studio dealt with making architechtonic graphics related to terms like comfort, density, lightness, etc. using the bare minimum lines required. The studio also explored multiple representation styles ranging from line drawings, miniature paintings, comic strips, to minimal hand drawings & digitally generated graphic designs. The studio also dealt with dwelling on ideating designs at various scales and realms ranging from lampshades to meditative zen art and sketches in a5, a4, a3 sizes to wall art in 8x6 feet and human scale paintings for quick design ideas.

Cafe + Office - Mandu

The studio had a brief to design a pollution monitoring center alongside a guest facility in 3 distinct sites- Diu, Udaipur & Mandu, all 3 being distinct landscapes - Beach, Desert and Mountains thus to observe alterations in design language while the program remains constant. The project here is placed in the pretext of Mandu in a hillscape that offers panoramic views of site. The idea remains to create a massy base that reflects the forts of mandu and caters to the services and a light semi-open pavillion on top that comprises of gathering spaces and opens up to the view outside.
