PRESS RELEASE

Philippine Airlines celebrates Christmas togetherness with “Regalo” Filipinos see working abroad as the norm, and more often than not, questions like “Wala ka bang balak mag-abroad?” (Don't you have plans working abroad?) get casually dropped during reunions. Most deem that better opportunities are found overseas. In fact, in a 2017 data published by Philippine Statistics Authority, there are 2.3 million Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) spread out across the world, 11 million if we count immigrants. The selfless sacrifice of our OFWs made them our “bagong bayani” (modern-day heroes); also because they contribute significantly to the country’s economy. Yet, the greener pasture has its consequences: Parents who decide to pursue jobs outside the country must endure being miles and miles away from their loved ones. On top of that, they have to bear with culture and language barriers, the instability of jobs for some, the incessant worrying and sleepless nights, and scrimping on themselves just to save most of their salaries and make ends meet for their families back home.

During the season where love, laughter, carols, and giving gifts are widely displayed and present, the lack of choice for OFW families to spend Christmas together has always been a scene too cinematic and familiar. Kids of OFW parents may have the coolest, branded shoes, latest gadgets, and imported treats but these material things would never equate to the warm hugs from their moms and dads, the setting up of Christmas tree together on a chilly Saturday morning, and the busy but jolly preparations for the Christmas eve feast. For OFW families, loneliness is shared, and both parties need to sacrifice for the lack of presence of the ones they love most. It is impossible to articulate the immensity of missed occasions, birthdays, graduations, the yearning, and nights spent alone. And to generalize the struggle of every overseas worker would be unfair. But one thing we all know and have surely felt is the surreal moment of finally being able to hug and breathe in the person who was away for a very long time. With the newest video of Philippine Airlines, “Regalo,” this priceless present was perfectly captured.

“We wanted to honor the sacrifices of our OFWs and their families longing to spend the holidays with them in the Philippines. We hope that through this simple video, we are able to give back and celebrate the true essence of Christmas – the spirit of togetherness,” says Ria Domingo, PAL Vice President for Marketing. Through the eyes of a child, we wanted to express that the best present is one’s presence, and our modern-day heroes can count on PAL to bring them home safely especially during this season. For indeed, we know that at the very heart of every Filipino Christmas is our loved ones coming home,” added Domingo.

Between July 16 and July 21 2016, KathNiel’s Creamy White campaign received close to 38,000 likes and 27,000 retweets. The combination of strong creative assets, partnership with influencers, and well-planned campaign execution were key to its success.

Ms. Ma. Sylvia Domingo Philippine Airlines Vice President for Marketing Speech for 2020 Discovery Hospitality Webinar on New Normal Tourism

Good morning Discovery Hospitality webinar participants and guests! Thank you for inviting me as panelist for your World of Discovery episode that focuses on Safe Space. Hope you’re all safe and doing well. I’m sure that all of us are aware that the COVID-19 pandemic has greatly affected every industry on a global scale, and it can be tough to enjoy usual activities given the New Normal. With all the unprecedented changes in restrictions, requirements, and safety protocols, our team has learned to adapt very quickly in inexplicable yet astounding ways — so we can make flying during this time safer for everyone. You see, I have been with Philippine Airlines for almost 35 years, and I can attest this is the biggest transformation we have ever experienced. It felt like we had to immediately shift 180-degrees in terms of operations and the way we communicate to our audience. The global pandemic has indeed changed the way people think about travel.

We can't deny that everyone has high concerns on how we're going to travel nowadays. And based on the latest IATA study, the organization that sets global standards for the airline industry, passengers are highly concerned about safety in every aspect of the journey, especially flying. Passenger preference in choosing an airline has changed as well. Pre-COVID, the top priority was price and promo, but this has now shifted and has been replaced by Health and Safety Measures on our own 2020 COVID-19 Passenger Behavior Study. Amid these concerns, however, we believe that it is our duty to ensure passengers feel safe when they travel with us, while of course retaining our signature service culture of heartwarming service or Buong-Pusong Alaga. Safety and wholehearted service. This is the promise we committed to our passengers when we first flew almost 80 years ago, and one we are determined to keep amid this global pandemic.

So, when you’re ready to fly, trust and believe that we’ll be ready to welcome you to the New Normal with our Same Heart. We’ve totally transformed our entire travel experience, from the minute you book to the moment you land – all with the passengers’ well-being in mind. All these measures are in place so that passengers can fly worry-free on their next trips with us. Let me explain further the added precautions we’ve redefined for every passenger's well-being. To minimize contact, we have imposed new standards on top of physical distancing such as installing clear barriers on ticket office and check-in counters, ground staff and cabin crew in personal protective gear, as well as securely sealed inflight meals. We also offer Onboard Distancing Seat Options on select international flights if passengers wish to ensure that seats beside them are vacant.

As part of our digitization efforts, we highly encourage passengers to do Online Check-in as well, as early as 24 hours before their flight.

in the cabin goes through hospital-grade High Efficiency Particulate Air Filters (or HEPA Filters) that eliminates up to 99.99% of airborne viruses and bacteria.

Next, for intensified cleaning & disinfection, all high-touch areas, such as the counters, clear barriers, seating areas, are thoroughly cleaned.

Also, the air flow in the cabin goes from top to bottom, never left to right or front to back. This further reduces the already low risk of the spread of airborne microbes.

Our highly-trained aircraft cleaning team are also on top of the disinfection of all cabin surfaces inside every aircraft before each flight, using high-grade eco-friendly disinfectants.

Aside from these, we have also piloted several customer-centric initiatives to make our customer journey more seamless for our passengers.

And, while inflight, lavatories and other high-touch cabin areas are frequently sanitized by our cabin crew. While inside the aircraft, I know you’re all concerned that you’re in an enclosed space with other passengers. But I guarantee you, planes are actually safer and have cleaner air than most other confined space. About 50% of the air in the cabin is refreshed every 2 to 3 minutes, bringing in fresh air into the cabin. The other 50% that is recirculated

Last July, we launched our International OneStop Shop, where passengers arriving in Manila will be directed to an IATF-certified end-to-end facility designed to make the RTPCR Testing and quarantine experience more efficient and convenient. This also includes a partnership with over 60 hotels in Metro Manila, offering discounted rates that can be availed by our passengers when waiting for their test results to be released.

where passengers can arrange their travel requirements more conveniently and get priority RT-PCR testing at discounted rates in our partner laboratory facilities. As we carry out these enhanced measures for our passengers, we also encourage them to help us in keeping everyone safe by: 1. Wearing a face mask and face shield at all times, as required by the Philippine government 2. Keeping a safe distance from each other, and 3. Observing frequent hand hygiene These may be scary and uncertain times, but you can be assured that we’re doing everything we can to make flying safer and more comfortable for everyone as we enter the new normal. Thank you, everyone, and we look forward to welcoming you onboard soon. Mabuhay!

Mr. Gilbert Sta. Maria Philippine Airlines President and Chief Operating Officer Speech for 2020 Department of Tourism Meeting

As an integral part of the Philippine tourism industry, we at Philippine Airlines always keep in mind that expanding our route network brings togetherness and delivers deeper people-to-people connections. The accessibility and convenience we provide to both Filipino and foreign markets that give life to the country culturally, socially, and economically are goals we hold dearly and greatly consider as privilege. We recognize that the Philippines has become one of the world’s richest tourist havens and that tourism has greatly helped in boosting the Philippine economy. Just recently, we participated in one of the biggest Philippine travel and tourism events, The Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) TravelTour Expo. And, in this event alone, we were able to provide promotions and bookable fares for travels to and within the Philippines to more than 100,000 travelers and visitors present during the event.

This year, we are excited to relaunch our direct Cebu to Los Angeles route that would provide a new gateway for tourists coming from Los Angeles and the rest of the US. We also support government initiatives such as the Visa Free Entry for Taiwan residents, among many others. By March, as the airline turns 79, we look forward to launching our Anniversary Seat Sale beginning March 01, which aims to bring great travel deals to all when travelling to and from the Philippines. Aside from that, we already have key programs lined up for the year to further support Philippine tourism initiatives such as: 1. No Stopover Fees on connecting flights via Manila and Cebu 2. Free Philippine Connecting Fares to further entice visits to our beautiful islands. This means that tourists flying to any Domestic destination will get their Domestic connecting fare for free.

So, if you plan to fly from New York to Boracay via Manila, your Manila to Boracay flight is on us. On top of these, working hand in hand with our government partners has opened a lot of opportunities, such as our partnership with the Department of Tourism for Guide to The Philippines to promote sustainable tourism in the country. Also, having an inhouse tour packaging program like PAL Swingaround that offers convenient flight & hotel packages has opened doors for foreigners and locals to explore more of the Philippines. With our fine-tuned route network and heartfelt, full-service customer experience that matches the needs and desires of today’s global travelers, trust that our commitment to being the premier flag carrier that aims to build a stronger trade and tourism industry in the Philippines is now stronger than ever.

Mr. Bernard Francis Chief Commercial Group Advisor Speech for Philippine Airlines 2019 Kick-Off Event

For years, Philippine Airlines has instilled the 5 core values unto every employee. One that strikes me the most is the importance of growing a successful and empowered team.

Relating this to our work, every individual, the ones beside you are also responsible of the projects you handle.

But it is not impossible.

Cooperation is not only shown in sports but also in small environments seeking greatness. In the Philippines, you call it Bayanihan. In Malay, we call it Kerjasama. But in whichever dialect, one thing is for certain: it is a unique trait that is celebrated and revered because it evokes the feeling of warmth, a spirit of cooperation towards one goal in mind.

And with the things I have witnessed Commercial is capable of doing in the past 14 months I have been with PAL, I am positive we can make this happen.

Team Commercial, wouldn’t you agree, success is much sweeter when it’s shared and celebrated with warriors come together as one?

Do you know the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child?” I am saying this because the proverb expresses that morals which are not instilled in home will be taught by neighbors.

But not everything should just be about work. I want us to make it a point to celebrate outside of work. With colleagues turned friends turned families, figuratively or literally.

Growing a successful and empowered team. Often talked about, right? And admittedly much easier said than done.

As The High School Musical song goes: We’re all in this together. Be one for 3.1. Thank you and Mabuhay! May our goals for 2019 bring us to greater heights.

FEATURE WRITING

Mabuhay Magazine Feature Philippine Airlines' Inflight Magazine NEW AND EXCITING UPGRADES IN 2020 Philippine Airlines is introducing a slew of service updates to further elevate the passenger experience. This year, PAL passengers have plenty of exciting enhancements to look forward to – and these are just the start.

MANADO, INDONESIA 3x weekly to/from Davao (from March 29)

HOT NEW DESTINATIONS

The name Manado, which is derived from the native Minahasa language, means “di jauh” in Bahasa Indonesia, roughly translating to “in a faraway place”. The capital city of North Sulawesi is surrounded by mountainous terrain and is located at the Bay of Manado, a popular diving destination that overlooks the sapphire blue waters of the Celebes Sea. Travelers will find conveniences such as a wide selection of boutique and luxury hotels.

PAL will be launching four more routes in the first quarter of the year and increasing the airline's connectivity to the rest of the world. These new gateways include flights to Perth, Manado, Kota Kinabalu and Jinjiang from Manila, Davao, Zamboanga and Clark respectively. PERTH, AUSTRALIA 4x weekly to/from Manila (from March 31)

With some of the world’s best beaches and nature attractions, the laidback capital of Western Australia is perfect for those who’d like a retreat from city life – but prefer the best of both worlds. While Sydney and Melbourne may be world-famous for an established dining culture, urbanites will be glad to know that Perth is is quickly catching up with a buzzy cluster of bars, restaurants and cafes. Where to visit: The breathtaking scenery at Cape Le Grand National Park (pictured, insert) is worth the eight-hour road trip from the city. Here, there are panoramic beaches, freshwater pools and bushwalking trails along the rugged coastline. Need a break? Soak your feet at the Injidup Natural Spa, a crystalline rockpool that’s a three-hour drive from Perth.

Where to visit: With pristine islands just off the coast, diving is a must here. Bunaken National Marine Park (pictured, insert) is a vibrant ecosystem that’s home to about 390 species of coral, and an estimated 2,000 types of fishes. Also worth the trip is Tomohon Flower Festival, an impressive showcase of local flora typically held late in the year at nearby Tomohon city. KOTA KINABALU, MALAYSIA 3x weekly to/from Zamboanga (from March 31)

This west coast city of Sabah, formerly known as Jesselton, is the place to visit for magnificent vistas, resort getaways and outdoor activities like climbing and river rafting. Going back to nature may be the reason why most visitors are drawn to Kota Kinabalu, but the city is also filled with shopping malls, markets, hawker centers and entertainment complexes.

Another noteworthy stop is the Mari Mari Village, a museum showcasing Borneo culture. marimariculturalvillage.com JJINJIANG, CHINA 3x weekly to/from Clark (from January 16)

Located on the southeast coast of Fujian province with stunning views of the South China Sea, Jinjiang boasts an ancient history that can be traced to the Neolithic period. Today, it is a prosperous metropolis with a thriving clothing and footwear manufacturing industry. Jinjiang is also a cultural stronghold known for its Buddhist temples and stone pagodas from the Tang and Song dynasties. Where to visit: Check out the Manichean Temple (pictured, insert), also known as Cao’an, on Huabiao Mountain. Built between 1131 and 1162, the temple features a 1.5m-tall granite sculpture of Prophet Mani, the religion’s Iranian founder. MORE DELECTABLE MEALS

Last year the airline revealed myPAL Flavors, a meal upgrade service with a mouthwatering variety of Filipino and international specialties in Premium Economy and Economy, and also the chance to be among the first to be served a meal inflight. Now, passengers on domestic flights departing from and arriving in Manila, and international flights departing from Manila, have more to rejoice about. PAL is widening its meal selection – new additions range from Italian, Japanese, Korean and American cuisines, to an indulgent Celebration Cake. Hearty choices include gyudon, a Japanese beef bowl with steamed white rice and chicken parmesan, served in creamy garlic parmesan sauce.

CONVENIENCE ON THE MOVE

The PAL Mobile App, which boasts a sleek new look and upgraded functionality with more assistive options for flight bookings and online check-ins, is up for an update this year. Brand new features include a Manage My Booking facility that will allow users to purchase add-ons and rebook flights via the app, Additional Payment Options ranging from new credit card schemes and e-wallets, a Reserve and Hold option where users will be allowed to pay for their booking via accredited Payment Centers and an improved Online Check-In facility that will provide a more optimized performance. ULTIMATE INFLIGHT COMFORT

It doesn’t matter if you’re traveling on a long-haul flight or making a short domestic trip, PAL’s Travel Extras lets passengers tailor their experience with options that offer the utmost convenience and comfort. The latest product offering is Choice Seats Neighbor-Free*, which allows Economy Class travelers to request an extra seat/s or row if they prefer a more private space. This ensures their immediate surroundings remain neighborfree throughout the journey, so they can stretch out and relax in maximum comfort with multiple seats. Rates range from US$120 (one extra seat), US$220 (two extra seats), and US$325 (three extra seats) to destinations in the US, Canada and London.

Greenpiece Feature TREES & STORIES

FEATURE WRITING

Greenpiece Feature TREES & STORIES You are comfortably sitting on a wooden bench while eagerly holding a hardbound book. You are hooked in reading this perfect novel from cover to cover, your eyeglasses almost falling off of your nose. Beautiful oak trees and damp grass surround you which make you feel peaceful and safe. Birds are starting to chirp out of their nests, like singing a melody from a dramatic opera. You are almost at the climax of what you are reading and you feel that the nature is conspiring with the intensity of occurrences in the novel as the cool air sends a shiver down your spine every time it blows unexpectedly. Great philosopher Cicero once said, “If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.”Indeed, some of the basic necessities of human race are food and knowledge. Let us digest the words of Cicero one by one. I believe that what he meant with garden is, this is where we can easily find food to eat, edible fruits to be exact. And with library, we usually gain wisdom through different reading materials. A garden and a library would be perfect if we want a simple life. On the other side, which is another belief on Cicero’s statement, it is also true that reading books amidst the natural environment that surrounds you is such a great way to relax. The vast and serene view of trees and grass relaxes everyone’s soul and makes one forget the mundane happenings in his life. To be in a quiet and soothing place while reading an interesting book is what most passionate readers want so they can fully concentrate and feel the story written in every pages of the book.

In Busan, South Korea, a forest library can be found at the base of Baekyang Mountain. Phone booth-like shelves were placed before the entrance to the comforting Unsu Temple. The shelves contain over 300 books, including illustrated children books, comic books, classics, and novels for adults. Visitors are allowed to borrow books without any charge and bring the selected reading material to the nearest bench or wooden chair for them to peacefully read. The forest library was a part of South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s National Reading Campaign last 2012. It was constructed to encourage Koreans to read at least twelve books by the end of the year without actually carrying around heavy books and staying indoors while reading. Moreover, no one guards the forest library so it also showcases honesty, trust and generosity among readers. Other forest libraries can be also found in the areas of Incheon, Seoul, Daegu and Gyeonggi-do Province of South Korea. Adventure within books is one of the best ways in gaining knowledge while staying in a quiet place makes us contemplate and appreciate the beauty of life. Trees and stories from books could be a perfect match whenever we want to take a break and to have a positive emotional development within ourselves.
