Jack White is Close to Finishing a New Album Jack White's second solo album may be coming sooner rather than later. In a recent chat session with fans on the Third Man Records message board, the former White Stripe revealed that he's nearly done working on a new record. "I'm producing two albums this month, and finishing them," White wrote. "One of them is mine." If he's indeed referring to a solo venture, then the follow-up to 2012's Blunderbuss could see the light shortly. When describing the new material, t h e garageblues god said, "It's definitely not one sound. It's definitely several. Like you heard in Blunderbuss, there's many different styles there.

S

ince the 1960s, many aspects of the hippie counterculture have been assimilated by the mainstream. Hippies often chose brightly colored clothing and and the styles for the most part were loose and non-constricting. Styles such as bell-bottom pants, vests, tie-dyed garments, dashikis, peasant blouses, and long, full skirts with nature-inspired patchwork or non-Western clothing with Native American, African and Latin American prints. Much of hippie clothing was self-made in defiance of corporate culture, and hippies often purchased their clothes from flea markets and second-hand shops. Natural and foreign ccessories for both men and women included Native American jewelry, head scarves, headbands and long beaded necklaces. Tie-dyeing was very fashionable in the

West in the late 1960s and early 1970s, as part of hippie style and still is today. ippie culture spread worldwide through a fusion of rock music, folk, blues, and psychedelic rock; it also found expression in literature, arts, fashion, and the visual arts, including film, posters advertising rock concerts, and album covers. Eventually the hippie movement extended far beyond States, the Kingdom, Europe, and appeared in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, Mexico, Brazil and many other countries. Neo-hippies, some of whom are sons, daughters and grandchildren of the original hippies, advocate many of the same beliefs of their 1960s

counterparts. Drug use is just as accepted as in the "original" hippie days, although most neo-hippies do not consider it necessary to take drugs in order to be part of the lifestyle, and others reject drug use in favor of alternative methods

In the 60's, hippies sought to free themselves from societal restrictions, choose their own way and find new meaning in life. This made hippies instantly recognizable to one another and served as a visual symbol of their respect for individual rights and their willingness to question authority. 7

of reaching higher or altered consciousness such as drumming circles, community singing, meditation, dietary practices, and yoga and dance.

he neo-hippie movement also inspired festivals and workshops that advocated alternative lifestyles, clean and sustainable energy, and unadulterated foods. Nambassa is also the tribal name of a trust that has championed sustainable ideas and demonstrated practical counterculture and alternative lifestyle methods since the early 1970s. ovement has also morphed into the 'Green Movement.'

This History of Hippies

T

he radical-hippie alliance had been counting on the voters to repudiate the "right-wing, warmonger" elements in Congress, but instead it was the "liberal" Democrats who got stomped. The hippies saw the election returns as brutal confirmation of the futility of fighting the Establishment on its own terms. There had to be a whole new scene, they said, and the only way to do it was to make the big move—either figuratively or literally— from Berkeley to the Haight-Ashbury, from pragmatism to mysticism, from politics to dope, from the involvement of protest to the peaceful disengagement of love, nature, and spontaneity. he mushrooming popularity of the hippie scene was a matter of desperate concern to the young political activists. They saw a whole generation of rebels drifting off to a drugged limbo, ready to accept almost anything as long as it came with enough "soma" (as Aldous Huxley named the psychic escape drug of the future in his science-fiction novel Brave New World, 1932). lower Power" (their term for the power of love), they said, was nonpolitical. And the New Left quickly responded with charges that hippies were "intellectually flabby," that they lacked "energy" and "stability," that they were actually "nihilists" whose concept of love was "so generalized and impersonal as to be meaningless." And it was all true. heir slogan is "Now," and that means instantly. Unlike political activists of any stripe, hippies have no coherent vision of the future—which might or might not exist. The hippies are afflicted by an enervating sort of fatalism that is, in fact, deplorable. And the New Left critics are heroic, in their fashion, for railing at it. But the awful possibility exists that the hippies may be right, that the future itself is

Special Recommendation Plagues of Babylon I - Iced Earth

ced Earth or rather Jon Schaffer have brought us new Iced Earth record cheerfully named Plagues Of Babylon. Preceded by generally accepted Dystopia, which was definitely a step forward compared to the boring and annoying The Crucible Of Man, an album that may have sounded well in Jon’s head, but in practice the story was somewhat different.

W

hether you are veteran or 15 year old school boy that just discovered this band, you will not be disappointed. Only problem is that very few people will be genuinely thrilled with this album. But, in the end, there’s enough quality material here to proclaim an album worthy representative of Iced Earth’s discography. If their sound continues to evolve in this direction I will not complain, just as long as they don’t return to the Crucible era. Year 2014 has started well, now we just need to hope it will continue in this direction.

Whether you are veteran or 15 year old school boy that just discovered this band, you will not be disappointed. 14

Special Recommendation Loud Like Love - Placebo

T

he seventh album from English alt-rockers Placebo, Loud Like Love, almost didn’t happen. Its genesis was in three songs written by frontman Brian Molko, originally intended for a solo project.

D

espite the album’s pull-somethingtogether creation, Loud Like Love doesn’t feel underdeveloped or halfhearted. It’s the band’s prettiest, most polished, most synthetic work to date, though this isn’t necessarily good news. The band work through track after track of modern alternative rock, never deviating from their sharp, bittersweet sound, but nothing on Loud Like Love is as strong as what has come before it.

Its genesis was in three songs written by frontman Brian Molko, originally intended for a solo project.

Special Recommendation Bruce Springsteen - T High Hopes

Special Recommendation Motörhead - Aftershock

O

nly a matter of months ago, Motörhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister had a defibrillator implanted in his chest, then suffered a haematoma shortly after. he band were forced to pull a run of European festival dates after doctors ordered Kilmister to rest. It looked as though 21st studio album Aftershock would never happen, while fans dreaded the imminent end of one of rock & roll’s greatest bands.

T

Motörhead’s 21st fulllength studio album Aftershock was released, 25th October 2013.

F

or Lemmy, notorious for his balanced diet of cigarettes and whiskey, a setback like this was not going to terminate this loudest of careers. So to abolish any speculation 20

regarding the band’s future, they’ve unveiled Aftershock to reassure fans of their position as “everything louder than everything else.” he beauty of a band like Motörhead, is that you know exactly what to expect upon first listen. Pulsating guitars pumping out like an out-of-control steam train, a driving rhythm section keeping everything in check, and, of course,

T

Lemmy’s trademark gravelly voice sounding remarkably familiar for someone who’s been suffering ill-health for the past year. ftershock is a welcome return to form for a band whose legacy will live on long after the band eventually decide to call it a day, while mercilessly and unrelentingly stamping out any pesky rumours of Lemmy’s death.
