What is Green Leaf ? Doing the right thing is important to us at Adnams and we like to work with suppliers who share this view. We use the Green Leaf symbol to indicate wine from growers who share our commitment to sustainable methods of viticulture and winemaking – this means minimum use of agrochemicals and a preference for organic or biodynamic principles. In 2008 we were awarded The International Wine Challenge Award for our environmental initiative. This recognised our work to reduce our environmental impact and that of our suppliers.
Decanter Independent Wine Merchant of the Year 2008 Adnams promotes responsible drinking.

Welcome to our New
WINE LIST
It’s always a great pleasure to find new wines to add to our range, and we hope you enjoy choosing from this new list as much as we enjoyed sourcing the 100 new wines we’ve included in it. We’re also excited that we’ve reduced the prices on over 100 wines, which means we continue to offer you excellent value for money. Of course, along with the introduction of new wines comes the limited availability of others. Such wines feature in this list but will go soon, so please order now to avoid disappointment. If new wines and new prices aren’t enough of a reason to buy your wines from Adnams, there’s also our selection of exclusive products. This includes Forrest Pinot Noir, named by Decanter as one of the world’s top 50 Pinot Noirs, and Monty’s wines, which found fame on Channel 4. Monty is a great example of how we continue to
Contents put sustainability and responsible sourcing at the heart of the Adnams business. Over 20% of this list is Green Leaf wines – that is wines produced using sustainable methods of viticulture and winemaking with a preference for organic or biodynamic principles. Finally there’s the Adnams quality guarantee – if you don’t like any wine you buy from us for whatever reason, return it within a month of purchase for a refund. For even more reassurance before you buy, please feel very welcome to visit one of our Cellar & Kitchen stores. Here you can taste our wines with our friendly and knowledgeable staff at hand and take advantage of our regularly changing offers and discounts. Kind regards, The Adnams Wine Team

The
Adnams
SELECTION 2010 will mark a decade since we first introduced our Adnams Selection range. The principle behind this, in that we look for wines that truly represent their provenance and punch above their weight in terms of both quality and price, remains unchanged. The source of a few of the wines has moved over the years but mainly change has come in the form of new additions like the Rioja and the Tuscan red. This year sees the notable arrival of a new level of wines – The Adnams Cellar Selection. The philosophy remains the same but we are looking at a grander level and these wines were sought out with your dinner party in mind.
Rosé SP10
Unsurprisingly, we turned to the classic French regions of Bordeaux, Burgundy, the Loire and the Rhône for two reds and two whites. We are very proud of this new selection and we hope that you enjoy them as much as we do. We have also branched out into areas that we felt related to the grape and added the Adnams Olive Oil and Adnams Balsamic Vinegar. There will be more developments in the coming year but I am keeping them under my hat for the moment. Watch this space! Alastair Marshall Senior Wine Buyer

We wholeheartedly pin our name to this fresh, effusive cuvée with its appealing, citrusy flavours. The blend is astute: Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier in the main, lending backbone and substance to the flowery fruitiness of Chardonnay.

This Château epitomizes what we look for not only in a great Bordeaux but as a template for the perfect supplier. A small, hands-on estate run by the husband and wife team of John and Veronique Cochran. The vineyards are filled with wild flowers for Veronique knows no other way than biodynamics and John nurtures each barrel in their cellars. The setting is beautiful, the lunch most congenial and we yearn to be back there.

Tradition pervades everything that is done at this estate. Henri Germain had this Meursault based property from his father and his son François will soon take over. They have resisted the lure of new techniques and complex bits of machinery and stuck to the well tried methods of long practice. This is real Burgundy.

While still a practising psychologist in Paris, Henri Bungener divides his time between the capital and a hidden piece of heaven on earth that is the Clos de Caveau. Tucked in the hills behind the village of Vacqueyras, this isolated valley is perfect for unhindered biodynamic cultivation. The soil and surrounding garrigue find true expression in the powerful herby flavours of his wines.

Vignerons since 1946 the Ferratons have been an integral part of the Rhône valley landscape. In 1986 their friend Michel Chapoutier took an interest in the firm and introduced organic cultivation in the vineyards. A few years later, under the Chapoutier influence, the vineyards were converted wholly to biodynamic cultivation. The Ferraton vineyards extend across many of the most famous appellations of the Rhône valley and resolutely focus on producing the finest quality.

This wine pulls in the best of both worlds sitting, as it does, between the Touraine and Sancerre. It is a Sauvignon that edges on the distinct minerality of the latter and yet keeps to the calmer prices of the former. Add to this the winemaking skills of Jacques Bailly and you have one of the most delicious of Loire Sauvignon Blancs.

When Monty Walden contacted us to tell of his project in the Roussillon, where he intended to spend a year making an affordable red from biodynamically cultivated vines, we said that we would take all he made. His enthusiasm and determination carried the project to fruition and now in the second year we have a rosé and a white to add. We remain staunch fans of this ‘green’ crusader. We are also talking to him about other projects. Roll on 2010!

It could be the spectacular train ride from Oporto upriver to this estate or their dramatically positioned, infinity-edged swimming pool that rewards weary travellers, that keeps Crasto close to our hearts. These are, in the end, but icing on the cake of truly spectacular wines. The classic red is unfailing in its ability to please, the port’s a delight and now a white whose pithy, individual flavours are superb.

Passion is what drives Telmo Rodriguez and his determination to uncover and revitalize the lost vineyards of Spain. This wine epitomises his work. He has found an ancient vineyard, revived it, rented space in somebody’s local cellar, made a great wine and almost single-handedly turned the fortunes of this region around.

Basa, made by relentlessly innovative Spanish winemaker, Telmo Rodriguez, derives its name from red counterpart Baso, itself named after the country’s ancient ‘baso’(goblet)-shaped bushvines. Basa is from Rueda, source of many of Spain’s finest whites, particularly Sauvignon. Telmo fights the corner here for local varieties Viura and Verdejo, conceding just a little Sauvignon for grassy freshness. The succulent result is packed with crisp, clean flavours of yellow plums and white peaches.

Just outside the hilltop village of Serralunga Paolo and Luisella Manzone run a jewel of a small Piedmontese estate that combines vineyards and agritourism in a cosy and welcoming ensemble. It is the pure expression of varietal character that Paolo achieves that make his wines notable and this Dolcetto, full of blackcurrant vigour and structural grip, just cries out for classic Italian food.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet blends Inspired by the great wines of the Mosel and seduced by the flexibility of the Riesling grape, John Forrest created this delightfully fresh, deliciously grapey version that is happily light in alcohol. The Doctors’ (because both he and his wife Brigid are doctors) is a true expression of good winemaking and worth celebrating for its joyful accessibility.

Rutherglen in Northern Victoria, due to its baking hot temperatures, has specialised in this wonderful style of fortified Muscat. The raisined intensity of flavour achieved is a unique taste and is one of the few sweet wines in the world to stand up to chocolate. The Campbell family have been established here since 1870 and are regarded as one of the finest proponents of this style of dessert wine.

2008 Canoe Tree Chardonnay, South Eastern Australia

Peachy, ripe and rounded Chardonnay is this value-rich all-around quaffer. Relaxing in the garden, prawns on the barbecue, roast chicken, all of the above. We hit on the name ‘Canoe Tree’ after an Australian visiting Southwold lent us his ‘Pilot Guide to the Murray River’. Wherein we read about resourceful Aborigines who cut shallow oval shapes in riverside trees and fashioned thick bark canoes.

We have known winemaker Mark Messenger for many years as he crafted his trade in wineries from Hungary via California and back to settle in Australia and Margaret River where he started. He has what can only be described as a ‘light touch’ and elegance in Juniper wines. This Chardonnay is the perfect example and restores your faith in this overused grape.

A full, spicy-edged mouthful from Carmenère, the adopted grape of Chile. The latest addition to our Casa Rivas range comes courtesy of grandiose, century-old Viña Tarapacá. Their 2,600 hectare Rosario de Naltagua plot lies in a loop of the Maipo River, 40 minutes’ invigorating drive south of Santiago. Ideal growing conditions, notably cold nights and hot days, produce deeply-coloured wines like this 87% Carmenère, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon blend, 6% Merlot blend.

Perched on the hillside and looking out over the valley floor towards the mountains of the Simonsberg, Seidelberg is on superior vineyard land with magnificent views. The Scotto family hail from the island of Ischia in the bay of Naples. The first Scotto in the US, Domonic, worked as a caulker in the shipyards and made wine at home. This wine-making tradition has been passed down the generations to his grandson, Anthony, who now runs the family wine business and makes this substantial all-American Zin.

The producer, Castle Rock, is a moveable feast! This is not one man and his winery but a concept created by founder Greg Popovitch and consultant winemaker August Briggs to scour America's west coast from Washington down to Monterey, in order to seek out patches of top quality fruit at best value and make their wines in the rented corner of a local cellar. The results are impressive.

Suave, intensely flavoured and beautifully balanced Champagne from one of the longestestablished family-owned domaines. Founded in 1818 by Nicolas-François Billecart, this aristocratic estate is renowned for producing Champagnes that age gracefully over many years. Adding to their own select parcels of vines, they buy fruit from growers in the Marne Valley and the Montagne de Reims. High quality production protocols include long fermentations using estate-cultured yeasts.
