Brisbane was once a mangrove swamp. Today, backyards in its suburbs provide most of the green cover in the city, contributing immensely to Brisbane’s urban forest and providing sustenance to Brisbane’s unique wildlife species. Planting invasive species and using inappropriate pesticides are threatening this ecosystem. Workshop initiatives by the government to create awareness about sustainable gardening practices take place in libraries. A library needs to engage people through sharing seeds, plants and knowledge of endemic species. If the library acts as an incubator where it stores seeds and grows plants till they are transferable, it can distribute them back to the city and help Brisbane Council achieve its goal of 40% Green Urban Forest by 2031.

KEY
The maps were generated by superimposing historic maps on recent maps using QGIS. After acquiring information from maps, books, journals, articles and documentaries, common patterns began to emerge. Brisbane’s dense forests began to diminish as more settlers arrived. The Old Government House near the Royal Botanical Garden was one of the earliest establishments of the settlers, and the population began to grow around it on the banks of the river. Forests were cut down to accommodate the growing population of immigrants and miners. Eventually, the number of native trees began to decline. The red patches on the maps illustrate what remains of the old forests.

Located 1000km from the coast of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean, the Galapagos Islands is a volcanic archipelago, containing one of the richest marine ecosystems in the world and at a junction of the world’s three great ocean currents. It is home to many unique species such as the marine iguanas, flightless cormorants, giant tortoises, and many more. However, the archipelago is under threat from population growth, tourism, and its increasing dependence on mainland Ecuador. Waste collected on the island is taken back to Ecuador on boats while a majority ends up in landfills on the island, due to an inefficient waste management system. Foods and goods are mostly imported from the mainland. As a group, we investigated these issues faced by one of the main islands San Cristobal, and proposed interventions using Complex Adaptive System theory, which could help the island and its inhabitants depend less on the mainland for resources and waste management.

MOBILITY
The section below illustrates the operation of the workshop. The workshop is surrounded by a water body, which helps to circulate cool air into the interior spaces. The operable louvre allows air to pass, while hot air is pushed out from the internal courtyard. The workshop acts as a pavilion, where the people working inside are the exhibits and can be viewed from every direction. The wider roof surface ensures shading and maximum sun exposure for the solar panels. The design attempts to empower the community through engagement.

TRANSITIONAL SHELTER

This studio aimed to identify an onshore crisis using systems thinking as a design method. Using this method, we were able to narrow down our scope for a specific client group. The client group we focused on were young homeless women suffering from domestic violence. Our investigation led us to discover that about 9,500 women between the age group of 18-24 were homeless, 69% of them were not enrolled in education, 39% were unemployed and 48% were not in the labour force. These were usually young women with little or no job experience, needed skills training, may have been injured physically and needed emotional recovery from stressful events. The idea was to design a safe house with the concept of camouflage adopting the characteristics of its surrounding context. The shelter would be located on a site based on the parameters of safety, healthcare, accessibility, education, training, community amenities and employment opportunities.
3
The shelter mimics the characteristics of its surrounding context on the exterior facades. The internal spaces focus on the central courtyard which acts as an oasis. A place to feel free, relax and become one with nature. Inspiration from caves and gorges were taken to craft the form of the shelter.

Young women presenting alone required more support periods than other clients in the domestic and family violence group, with 3 support periods and 173 days of support (SHSC Report, 2013-2014). The above diagram illustrates how the form was crafted on site. Footprints were generated using plot sizes of surrounding buildings. To bridge the gap a courtyard was introduced between the built form. The form was then modified to ensure maximum daylight penetration. Finally, fences and materials were added to mimic the surrounding site context.

We often hear that to discover something new we must study the old, to invent the future we must understand the past. The poet T. S. Eliot reminds us that tradition cannot be possessed it needs to be reinvented and rediscovered by the future generations. A Traditional museum is a place for knowing where the people interact with the exhibits of the past to learn something new. However, there are thousands of exhibits all around the world and it’s just not physically possible for a person to embark on the journey to see all the exhibits. Accessibility becomes the issue. Due to the advancement of technology in 3D scanning, imagery and 3D printing. It is now possible to bring forth all the exhibits and even the unexplored sites with the help of technology and fit them all in a space where people can experience them first hand.
4
I believe a digital museum should be a building out of Science fiction, defying the laws of physics and nature. The inventions of today are often inspired by science fiction. Federation Square stands out as a unique public space breaking from the typical grid system of Melbourne. It is the cultural hub where sports enthusiasts, music lovers, tourists, art fanatics congregate to celebrate life. Federation East needs to be an important public space where it can learn from its predecessor and provide for future generations.

The proposed 3-storied residence on 114 Dow Street consists of 3 bedrooms, open plan living, a central courtyard along with basic amenities. The project aims to make the best use of the site while being respectful of the surrounding context and neighbours. Privacy has been carefully considered with timber batten privacy screens and carefully considered habitable zones on the terrace to prevent overlooking. The proposed dwelling respects the neighbourhood context while providing an exciting contemporary architectural intervention and family residence for many years to come.

SAIRU Hill Resort is located in Bandarban which is in the South-Eastern province of Bangladesh. It is known as one of the most scenic travel destinations in Bangladesh for its hilly terrains, waterfalls and majestic landscapes. Our idea was to design pavilions on a landscape, from where nature could be experienced in all its glory. Minimalist forms using local and reused materials, blend in with the lush green landscape.
6
Project Role Under Supervision • Brainstormed and designed with studio team. • Drafted for schematic design and design development phase. • Developed the Masterplan • Prepared drawings for construction. • Modelled 3D for presentation purposes. • Generated 3D Visualisations for in-house purposes • Maintained liaison with contractors and consultants. • Performed site inspections and modified drawings accordingly.
