Selected Works

Brisbane was once a mangrove swamp. Today, backyards in its suburbs provide most of the green cover in the city, contributing immensely to Brisbane’s urban forest and providing sustenance to Brisbane’s unique wildlife species. Planting invasive species and using inappropriate pesticides are threatening this ecosystem. Workshop initiatives by the government to create awareness about sustainable gardening practices take place in libraries. A library needs to engage people through sharing seeds, plants and knowledge of endemic species. If the library acts as an incubator where it stores seeds and grows plants till they are transferable, it can distribute them back to the city and help Brisbane Council achieve its goal of 40% Green Urban Forest by 2031.

Located 1000km from the coast of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean, the Galapagos Islands is a volcanic archipelago, containing one of the richest marine ecosystems in the world and at a junction of the world’s three great ocean currents. It is home to many unique species such as the marine iguanas, flightless cormorants, giant tortoises, and many more. However, the archipelago is under threat from population growth, tourism, and its increasing dependence on mainland Ecuador. Waste collected on the island is taken back to Ecuador on boats while a majority ends up in landfills on the island, due to an inefficient waste management system. Foods and goods are mostly imported from the mainland. As a group, we investigated these issues faced by one of the main islands San Cristobal, and proposed interventions using Complex Adaptive System theory, which could help the island and its inhabitants depend less on the mainland for resources and waste management.

Our Concept was to design sustainable structures made from local materials such as invasive species of guava trees, and encourage community participation.

We often hear that to discover something new we must study the old, to invent the future we must understand the past. The poet T. S. Eliot reminds us that tradition cannot be possessed it needs to be reinvented and rediscovered by the future generations. A Traditional museum is a place for knowing where the people interact with the exhibits of the past in order to learn something new. However, there are thousands of exhibits all around the world and it’s just not physically possible for a person to embark on the journey to see all the exhibits. Accessibility becomes the issue. Due to the advancement of technology in 3D scanning, imagery and 3D printing. It is now possible to bring forth all the exhibits and even the unexplored sites with the help of technology and fit them all in a space where people can experience them first hand.

I believe a digital museum should be a building out of Science fiction, defying the laws of physics and nature. The inventions of today are often inspired by science fiction. Federation Square stands out as a unique public space breaking from the typical grid system of Melbourne. It is the cultural hub where sports enthusiasts, music lovers, tourists, art fanatics congregate in order to celebrate life. Federation East needs to be an important public space where it can learn from its predecessor and provide for future generations.

Music is an art form whose medium is sound. For people in various cultures, music is an important part of their way of life. Ancient Greek and Indian Philosophers defined music as tones ordered horizontally as melodies and vertically as harmonies. Bangladesh is one of the fastest growing countries in the world and has become a host for sports, music and other activities celebrating life. In addition to the Cricket World Cup, other activities are taking places, such as the World Music Festival celebrating Folk, Classical, Jazz and Blues genres of music. Artists across the globe are coming to take part in these festivals that are being held in venues like Women’s Complex, B.I.C.C and Army Stadium. However, these venues lack proper acoustics and space. With an appropriately designed Centre where music could be celebrated year long, artists could perform there, and afterwards give lectures, attend workshops, share and exchange ideas about music, culture and life itself.

We could learn a lot more about the artists and they could learn more about our culture, music, and perspectives. This could lead to successful development in aspects of knowledge, culture and society. Being a musician myself, I was keen on undertaking this challenge for my thesis project.

SITE INVENTORY

The site is situated 16 KM north-east of Dhaka. The rivers Balu and Shitalakshya flow on the west and east side of the city. A 300-feet wide road intersecting at Pragati Sharani connects the town with Dhaka. Recreational facilities are scarce in our country. The Center for Music will act as a cultural hub for the community of Purbachal by being a platform for youth from where they can be inspired, educated, and broaden their skills. It will encourage interaction between people of all ages through music.

Inspired by Iannis Xenakis, who pioneered the use of mathematical models in music such as applications of set theory, stochastic processes, game theory and also an important influence on the development of electronic and computer music. He integrated music with architecture, designing music for pre-existing spaces, and designing spaces to be integrated with specific music compositions and performances.

STEP 01. Sound wave pattern which was derived from the song ‘High Hopes’ from the album ‘The Division Bell’ by Pink Floyd with the aid of a wave pattern generating software. STEP 02. Initial sketches derived from the sound waves pattern.

STEP 03. A conceptual three-dimensional form was generated for volumetric analysis. STEP 04. Functions were added to the form, changing the volume and morphology of the form.

STEP 05. Courtyard, dock and double height spaces were created manipulating the overall volume and shape. STEP 06. Final detailed model with elevation. Details were added to the shell structure. Landscape and plazas were designed by adjusting the site.

The Level 03 plan above illustrates the overall space allocations for the second floor of the Centre for Music. The classrooms and music studios are located on the left separated by a courtyard. Listening room, the library, computer laboratory which are double height are located at the centre, while concert hall and backstage facilities are placed on the right.

The plan illustrates the site and its features for the institute. Surrounded by a lake from west to east, it is accessed by an arc-shaped road on the S.W corner. The landscaped plaza creates a buffer space, from the roads. N.W side features the entry and concert hall. Classrooms, studios and seminar halls are located at the N and performance areas are located at the centre. AER I AL V I E W

The idea was to capture the essence of music through an abstract form which was based off sound waves and their interactions in acoustical spaces. The internal spaces were designed to enrich and maximize the experience of both listening to and performing music. The material for the shell of the architecture was prefabricated concrete which wraps the entire exoskeleton diagrid structure. All the glasses used were

double layered soundproof glass. The walls and floors were made of concrete with acoustical treatment, wrapped with wood. The landscape and plaza were designed in relation to the exterior elevation, striking a balance between soft paved, green fields and the lake.

URBAN PLAZA

The urban plaza is open for public interactions, activities, and open-air concerts. Soft paved landscape and green fields enrich the ambience of the exterior and the surrounding lake dramatizes the site. The setting provides a space where people can just come to relax, enjoy a picnic and listen to great music and meet interesting musicians.

AMPHITHEATRE

The amphitheatre cascades down and spreads out to the lake. The stage with the artist would appear to float on water from a viewers perspective. A touch of green in the form of triangular patches was introduced in the design to provide soft surfaces.

SAIRU Hill Resort is located in Bandarban which is in the South-Eastern province of Bangladesh. It is known as one of the most scenic travel destinations in Bangladesh for its hilly terrains, waterfalls and majestic landscapes. Our idea was to design pavilions on a landscape, from where nature could be experienced in all its glory. Minimalist forms using local and reused materials, blend in with the lush green landscape.

Ratargul Retreat is in the concept design phase. It is located near the Ratargul Swamp forest which is a freshwater swamp forest by the Gowain River, in Fatehpur Union, Gowainghat, Sylhet, Bangladesh. It is the only swamp forest located in Bangladesh and one of the few freshwater swamp forests in the world. Our brief was to design a sanctuary for tourists and families that allowed recreation and rejuvenation for its inhabitants while respecting and highlighting the natural surroundings. We proposed a self-sustaining eco-village, which would encourage the participation of the local community, generate jobs and encourage engagement between the locals and tourists.

Kollol Duplex Apartments is a 10-Storied Residential building with four duplex apartments and three basements, located in Baridhara, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Designed for the owner of Kollol Group, the apartments are supported with amenities such as a gym, rooftop garden with BBQ space and a jacuzzi. Terraces with gardens were integrated within each floor plan to bring in the outdoors into the building.

Selected Works

The studio design was part of the interior design for the Corporate Head Office of Thermax group, one of the leading garments industries of Bangladesh. The studio serves as the gallery space with the products as its exhibits. The studio is the first point of contact with clients and therefore represents the brand and establishes the ambience of Thermax Group.
