The thyroid is a gland located in people neck. Its main function is to make hormones. Hormones affect cells and tissues in distant parts of patient’s body. They also affect the body’s metabolic rate and the levels of certain minerals in the blood. So, if you are suspect about your problem on the thyroid, you should test hypothyroidism immediately. Here are some kinds of test you should refer to.

1. TSH Test This test measures the amount of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in the blood. TSH is produced by the pituitary gland, a small organ located below the brain and behind the sinus cavities. TSH production is regulated under the feedback system of the body to maintain a stable amount of thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) in the blood. Thyroid hormones help control the rate of energy use by the body. This is also the best way to test hypothyroidism. When thyroid hormone levels in the blood, the hypothalamus secretes thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH), TRH stimulation of pituitary TSH liberation. TSH in turn stimulates the thyroid gland T4 and T3 production and release of T3, T4 in the blood, thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the trachea neck. When all three parts are functioning normally, thyroid production T3, T4 style on and off repeatedly to maintain stable levels of thyroid hormone in the blood.

If there is pituitary dysfunction, may result in increases or decreases the amount of TSH. When increasing concentrations of TSH, the thyroid will increase production and increase the amount of T4 and T3 in the blood and affected persons may experience symptoms associated with hyperthyroidism, such as tachycardia, weight loss, stress straight, shaking hands, eye irritation, and trouble sleeping.

If reduced production of thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism), patients may experience symptoms such as weight gain, dry skin, constipation, cold, and fatigue. In addition, pituitary dysfunction, hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism can occur if there is a problem in the hypothalamus (TRH is not enough or too much). Thyroid hormone levels can also be altered by a variety of thyroid disease, regardless of the amount of TSH present in the blood looks like.

T4 Test

This test measured the amount of thyroxine, or T4 in the blood. T4 is one of two main hormones produced by the thyroid gland, another substance is triiodothyronine. Gland plays an important role in controlling the metabolic process, the rate of energy use by the body. T4 accounted for approximately 90% of thyroid hormones. Total T4 and free T4 is two separate tests, it can help your doctor evaluate thyroid function. The total T4 test has been used for years to help diagnose hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. It is a useful test, but may be affected by the amount of this hormone binding proteins in the blood. The Free T4 test is a new test is not affected by protein level.

Free T4 test many doctors use and that it reflects the function of the thyroid hormone more accurate, and in many cases, doctors only Free T4 tests to replace the total T4 tests. Thyroxine test is normally given along with or after a TSH test. This helps your doctor determine the response of the system thyroid hormone responsive compatible or not, and the results of tests that distinguish the different causes of hyperthyroidism and cause hypothyroidism. Sometimes a T3 test will also be assigned to provide more information for diagnosing physician.

T3 Test If a health care provider suspects hyperthyroidism in a person who has a normal FT4 level, a T3 test can be useful to confirm the condition. In some cases of hyperthyroidism, FT4 is normal yet free T3 (FT3) is elevated, so measuring both T4 and T3 can be useful if a health care provider suspects hyperthyroidism. The T3 test is not useful in diagnosing hypothyroidism because levels are not reduced until the hypothyroidism is severe. But if you want to test hypothyroidism, here is also a good choice

Thyroid Antibody Tests

The immune system of the body normally protects us from foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses by destroying these invaders with substances called antibodies produced by blood cells known as lymphocytes. In many patients with hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, lymphocytes make antibodies against their thyroid that either stimulate or damage the gland. Two common antibodies that cause thyroid problems are directed against thyroid cell proteins: thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin. Measuring levels of thyroid antibodies may help diagnose the cause of the thyroid problems. For example, positive anti-thyroid peroxidase and/or anti-thyroglobulin antibodies in a patient with hypothyroidism make a diagnosis of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. If the antibodies are positive in a hyperthyroid patient, the most likely diagnosis is autoimmune thyroid disease.
