Zatorej - dobrodošli in veliko uspeha!

“Competitions are for horses, not artists” said Béla Bartók. This might be true from the perspective of a musical genius, but history teaches that a number of musical giants, such as Marta Argerich, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Van Cliburn, Gidon Kremer, Boris Pergamenschikow — or the members of our panel — have emerged from musical competitions. Although not being lifechanging moments, competitions can still motivate aspiring young artists to carry on developing their own style, help them come to the fore and direct them taking the bitter with the sweet, while showing the world precious stones that still need some polishing. Nova Gorica is certainly one of the places consolidating its position on the world-map of musical competitions. The biennial International Saxophone Competition in Slovenia has grown from a modest local event in 2003 into an enviable meeting where young musicians from nineteen countries from every continent (except Africa)‘fight’ for the coveted prizes offered by sponsors, partners and supporters, with the best musicians performing in the finals as soloists, accompanied by a renowned symphony orchestra. In addition to pieces from their own repertoires, the artists are requested to perform compositions by selected Slovenian composers, most certainly unknown to most of the young musicians, and thus contributed to the promotion of our small country, its culture and its creativity beyond our national borders. The event creates a network of relations between young saxophone and piano players, tutors, panellists, organisers, sponsors and accompanists, as well as fans, generating an invisible energy hub, which is ensuring an increasing prominence to our young instrument. There are disappointments, of course, but there are even more beautiful and memorable things happening in this type of musical competition, in spite of us not being horses. Or maybe the great Bartók was wrong ... Welcome then, enjoy your time here and I wish you lots of success! Matjaž Drevenšek,

umetniški vodja Mednarodnega tekmovanja saksofonistov v Sloveniji Artistic Director of the International Saxophone Competition in Slovenia
