You will first and foremost study music

All you have to do is touch the right

“It’s easy to play any musical instrument: key at the right time and the instrument will play itself.” You will be teaching people to do just that with a focus

in music education. Despite its title,

build those skills in your future students. Composition, conducting, orchestration, and improvisation will all be part of your course work. You will build a foundation

of knowledge in instrumental and chorale

repertoire, and get a head start designing a sample curriculum for the classroom. Often, music education

students go on to teach

private lessons; others become teachers in

primary or secondary schools. You will

receive classroom experience through

observation and student teaching. This is a semester-long endeavour, where you will see firsthand what goes into being a music educator—the ways music comes alive for students in

the classroom and what all goes into managing that classroom effectively. Your own music will be part of your

studies as well, and we will require you to concentrate and gain proficiency

in an instrument of your choice. The most important requirement for this

major is a love of music and a desire

to bring that music—and that passion

for it—to others. If you’ve got talent to boot, you should really enjoy the ride.

ALL NEW STUDENTS TO THE

MUSIC THEORY & COMPOSITION

PROGRAMME MUST DO THE FOLLOWING:

perform an audition on their major instrument,

interview with a member of the music faculty,

and take a music theory placement examination.

HOW MUSIC WORKS & HOW TO MAKE IT WORK FOR YOU Music Theory is the study of the content

and construction of music. Composition is

the process of creating musical works. Music

Theorists and Composers are practitioners who

exhibit not only technical competence, but also a broad

knowledge of music, literature, musical style, and an insight into the role of music in the life of humankind. Our programme prepares students to

become teachers of music theory in secondary schools, analyse and comment on music (i.e. become a music critic), compose and arrange art music or music for films or TV,

pursue graduate studies in theory or composition to later become a teacher of theory or composition at the university level, and pursue graduate programmes in related areas (e.g. recording or arts management).Â

Most students in the Theory/Composition programme regard their Senior Recital as one

of the major highlights of their programme. For this recital, composition students arrange for other students to perform several of their pieces. Some ambitious students in the

past have even arranged for orchestras. The recital usually lasts between 30 and 60 minutes and is open to the public.

The classes you will take include
