GOLDEN BEAR RECREATIONAL CENTER UC BERKELEY / Arch100B / Spring 2005 Instructor: Rene Davids Head Professors: Lisa Iwamoto & Rene Davids The program was to create a recreational space suitable for swimming and ice skating. The site was a field located north of Clark Kerr Campus in Berkeley. The initial exercises were to create landscapes based on the body and motion. Because of these preliminary concepts, circulation became my main focus. Through the exploration of movement and the human body, I developed a system of interconnected ramps and pathways to extend the experience of better health and recreation.

SANTA CRUZ SURF RESCUE CENTER UC BERKELEY / Arch 100A / Summer 2004 Instructor: Terez Tierney Head Professor: Anthony Burke The program was to design a rescue station for the lifeguards of Santa Cruz State Beach, complete with equipment storage, living areas, a training center, and classrooms to educate people about beach safety. My concept started by examining the different textural layers on the site. Using the city of Santa Cruz as a larger context, I created a design based on using the urban fabric as a tool for placing programs. Through extensive mapping exercises and sketches, I developed a system of locating programs that was related to the city beyond.

CALIFORNIA COLLEGE OF THE ARTS DORMITORY HOUSING UC BERKELEY / Arch 100B / Spring 2005 Instructor: Rene Davids Head Professors: Lisa Iwamoto & Rene Davids The different physical densities of the surrounding context converge onto the site, creating an ideal location for connecting the community and the campus as a place for display and meeting. I focused on the striation of the city as a template for design.

Besides dormitory housing for students, the program included a cafe, student art gallery, and communal studios. The scheme makes use of a progression through the public, semi-public, and private places to provide for a wide range of activities.

The building conveys in physical form the juxtaposition of light and dark. Through the idea of dark objects in a lit shed, along with floating those objects on a sea of light, this house will be a gathering place, a welcoming abode for those who are prone to having congregations of people with similar interests.

There is a dark space for technological recreation, a light space for traditional entertainment, and living spaces that provide views to the outside, along with privacy for more quiet affairs. Two cores are formed within the building to hold up the structure.

LAS VEGAS WEDDING CHAPEL UCLA / AUD401 / Spring 2007 Instructor: Dagmar Richter The Suspension Wedding Chapel utilizes a system of deeply embedded columns, suspension cables, and a nest of steel tubes to create a structural framework for the translucent interior walls, and to also create shadows that change throughout the day, like dappled foliage. The Chapel has two different modes: - The daytime experience where the the frame and the wires create a lattice of shadows, mimicking the pattern of a trellis, giving you that country springtime feel in the middle of Las Vegas. - The night-time experience, where guests can experience being inside the glowing jewel of Las Vegas, or perhaps indulge in a little darkness and have special theme weddings. The chapel is built with a steel frame, the perforations designed for each section of the building; the dressing rooms have more privacy with thicker elements, while the main chapel space has thinner lines to allow light and shadow play to come through. The prompt of the studio was a Las Vegas wedding space focusing on affect, interior space, and mood. The program consisted of the backstage necessities such as storage, dressing rooms, office, and restrooms, and also the entry, exit, and the wedding space itself.

This project was a year long research studio, dedicated to prefabrication techniques and multifamily, affordable housing in Los Angeles. The research of this studio has focused on manufactured housing typologies, including a trip to Europe to research advanced pre-fabricated building methods and materials, such as KLH and ELK Homes. We have defined manufactured housing to be buildings that are pre-fabricated in a specific manner. The methods of pre-fabrication has been narrowed to three major types: Modular, Pre-Cut, and Panelized. The focus of this project will be to incorporate a modular building typology with affordable housing features that will offset the cost of the housing for future residents. A further goal would be to create a place for community to grow and encourage residents to remain the area for a longer period of time and to add their own mark to the community as opposed to using Chinatown as a waystation for the other Asian communities beyond downtown Los Angeles, such as Monterey Park and San Gabriel. Prefabricated modules will allow for ease of transportation and construction, offsetting costs and making the building more affordable for developers to implement this type of housing on empty parking lots all over Chinatown.
