Medical devices and pharmaceuticals sector reaches record figure of US$1.9 billion in exports SANTO DOMINGO. - The Medical Devices & Pharmaceuticals Cluster’s general coordinator, Omar Jimenez informed that the manufacturing subsector reached historic numbers in exports, $1,883 million in 2021, projecting more than $2,000 million for 2022. These figures help consolidate the subsector as the Dominican Republic’s main export asset.

Jimenez stated that medical devices and pharmaceuticals sector is of high socioeconomic importance, as its performance was a key factor in COVID-19 mitigation both nationally and internationally and has great potential for growth and continuously provides favorable economic development for the country.

“Besides being a sector of great contributions in terms of technology transfer and employment, with more than 31,000 employees to date, we are committed to continue developing the supply chain and human capital in the Dominican Republic, while working alongside public and private entities to ensure progress, as established in the new Strategic Plan 2022-2026”, expressed Jimenez ADOZONA’s president, Luis José Bonilla Bojos, added that different studies made by multilateral organizations like the Inter-American Development Bank, identify the medical devices and pharmaceuticals sector as one with great potential for growth and employment generation in the country, especially in the global supply chain readjustments we see today.

“The Dominican Republic is a great competitor among the nearshoring investment opportunities in the region, and this is one of the main approaches to be tackled in the Cluster’s new Strategic Plan” Bonilla Bojos highlighted Among countries where medical devices are exported: the United States, Holland, Japan, Germany, China, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Included in the medical devices currently manufactured in the country: Catheters, products for ostomy patients, pacing wires and defibrillators, pleural drainage systems, plasma separation equipment, products for hydrocephalic patients, biopsy needles, and product for critical patients monitoring.
