OperaDelaware’s 2017 Spring Festival Leap Year 1792 saw the birth of Gioachino Rossini, a most beloved Italian composer, on Feb. 29. So it is fitting that OperaDelaware will celebrate the 225th anniversary of his birth this spring when it presents La Cenerentola (Cinderella), the rarely staged Semiramide as well as his Petite messe solennelle (Little solemn mass) which Rossini described as “the last of my péchés de vieillesse” (sins of old age). Last season’s pairing of the East Coast Premiere of Franco Faccio’s Hamlet (Amleto) and Verdi’s beloved Falstaff was a winning formula and showed the world that Delaware was indeed a destination that is worthy of a visit. These performances received accolades from across the country and around the world. Semiramide is based on Voltaire’s tragedy Semiramis. Written in 1823, Rossini’s final Italian opera is about a power-hungry Babylonian Queen who murdered her husband. This rarely-performed tour de force is a sumptuous masterpiece, perfectly suited to the intimacy and extraordinary acoustics of The Grand Opera House. Susannah Biller stars in the title role. She has been praised for her “incandescent, exquisitely supple soprano” and her “light, sweet lyric voice and coloratura agility.” Aleksandra Romano, who has sung with the Portland Opera and

Washington National Opera, is Arsace. Timothy Augustin is Idreno and Daniel Mobbs is Assur. Composed 200 years ago, Rossini’s setting of La Cenerentola has stood the test of time. Glass slippers are replaced with bracelets in this captivating opera that will delight the whole family! While there’s no fairy godmother in Rossini’s story, there’s still a healthy dose of step-sisterly mischief and fairy tale-like enchantment that ends in happily ever after. Pennsylvania native Megan Marino sings the title role. Her recent appearances include the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Santa Fe Opera, and the Spoleto Festival USA. Tenor Jack Swanson will sing the role of Prince Ramiro; and two standouts from last year’s performances of Falstaff will round out the cast—Steven Condy as Don Magnifico and Sean Anderson as Dandini. Petite messe solennelle will feature four outstanding graduates of the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia – Colleen Daly, Chrystal E. Williams, William Davenport and Ben Wager. This performance with piano and harmonium will be conducted by Maestro David Amado.

The future holds undreamed of scientific and technological opportunities. The Delaware Aerospace Academy hopes to prepare students for those challenges. In operation since 1990, the objective of the Delaware Aerospace Academy is to provide hands-on training and experiences through our Destination academies in related activities and fields. Throughout the week, girls and boys in grades 1 - 10 are continually challenged to think, create, solve, build, and work cooperatively. All academies are designed to integrate the study of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) using Earth, Science and Space Education as the unifying framework. The academies are financed through tuition fees, grants and scholarship sponsorships, with emphasis on in-kind support from industry and other agencies. A working board and advisory council, consisting of representatives from industry, educational and supporting agencies, share their expertise and advise the group. Churrascaria Saudades In days of old, in the southernmost state of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul, cattle grazed the pampas (treeless plains), providing the Gaucho (Southern Brazilian Cowboy) with endless supplies of meat for the now famous tradition of “Churrasco” barbecues. The Gaucho would skewer large pieces of meat and slowly grill them over open-flamed pits. In keeping with this tradition, we bring you Churrascaria Saudades. At Churrascaria Saudades, we proudly keep this churrasco tradition alive with Gaucho chefs roasting the finest cuts of meat over open fire, serving these skewered cuts tableside. A fantastic gourmet salad bar with fresh cut vegetables, a variety of traditional side dishes to compliment the meats, signature cocktails/imported soft drinks, and a dessert menu replete with cakes, fruits, and sweets will round off the unique experience. The poet Goethe once said, “There is no past that we can bring back by longing for it, only the present that builds and creates itself as the past withdraws.” A unique word exists, only in the Brasilian language, that best describes those longings and that word is Saudades. The word Saudade (pronounced: saw’ DA dee, or plural: saw’ DA deez) is the Brasilian word that has no direct translation into English but is most accurately described as a deep emotional state of nostalgic longing for an absent something or someone. After a unique steak experience, as can only be experienced at Churrascaria Saudades, a guest will go away with a deep emotional state of nostalgic longing to return to the experience, hence the name Saudades. Wilmington Western Railroad Our History B&O Train At Landenberg, Pa., circa 1895 Photo: HRCV Archives The Wilmington & Western Railroad was chartered in 1867 to move goods between the mills along the Red Clay Creek and the Port of Wilmington, and officially opened for freight and passenger service on October 19, 1872. Three passenger trains and a mixed freight train operated six days a week on nearly 20 miles of track between downtown Wilmington, Del., and Landenberg, Pa. Much of the line ran through the Red Clay Valley, bustling in the late 19th Century with farms, small villages and water-powered mills. Excessive construction debts and poor management caused the line to fall into foreclosure in 1877, just a few years after opening. New owners reorganized the line as the Delaware Western Railroad, which became highly profitable moving Kaolin Clay, vulcanized fiber materials, snuff, iron and coal to and from the many mills that lined the route. In the 1880s, the line was purchased by the Baltimore & Philadelphia Railroad (B&P), a subsidiary of the Baltimore & Ohio (B&O). Purchase of the line by the B&P provided the Baltimore & Ohio with an access route to compete with the Pennsylvania Railroad for passengers and freight traveling between Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York City. The line became known as the "Landenberg Branch" by the B&O and was, for a time, its most profitable branch line. Brandywine Springs Entrance Archway Photo: Friends of Brandywine Springs Park When a resort opened along the railroad in the late 1880s at Brandywine Springs, the passenger business flourished as people from around the region came to the park to escape the summer heat. They came to enjoy the fun house, pony rides, carousel, live entertainment and delicious food. The park closed in 1923, and the passenger business ended on September 28, 1930, a victim of the Great Depression. Shortly thereafter, the Pennsylvania Railroad discontinued its connecting service to Landenberg. With trucks and automobiles gaining in popularity, the Landenberg Branch saw a sharp decrease in freight traffic, and the line was shortened to Southwood, Del., in the early 1940s. After the demolition of the large Broad Run Trestle and growth of residential development after World War II, the line was shortened to Hockessin, Del., in the late 1950s. In the mid-1960s, Historic Red Clay Valley Inc., (HRCV) was formed and began leasing the tracks from the B&O on weekends beginning in 1966, operating steam-powered tourist trains between Greenbank Station and Mt. Cuba, located mid-way between Greenbank and Hockessin. In the mid-1970s, the line's new owner, The Chessie System, determined that the line had become a financial burden and filed for abandonment of the Landenberg Branch. With the line due to be demolished, fundraising began by HRCV. In August of 1982, the remaining 10.2 miles of the Landenberg Branch were purchased by HRCV. Remains of Bridge 10A (Mt. Cuba East) Photo: David Ludlow For three days in September of 1999, Hurricane Floyd pounded the East Coast, destroying two of our wooden bridges spanning the Red Clay Creek, damaging 11 others and causing numerous washouts along the line. A year later, volunteers and contractors had repaired most of the line between Greenbank and Hockessin, and on November 25, 2000, the first revenue train made its way westbound to Mt. Cuba. The Wilmington & Western had overcome a major natural disaster in just 18 months, but the railroad would soon discover that Mother Nature had more in store. On September 15, 2003 (one day short of the fourth anniversary of Hurricane Floyd), the remnants of Tropical Storm Henri stalled over southern Chester County in Pennsylvania and produced record amounts of water in the Red Clay Creek. The rushing waters tore through the Red Clay Valley, destroyed six of our historic bridges, and reduced our railroad from 10 miles to two. We persevered (and continued to operate on the remaining section of track) while we rebuilt the bridges to withstand future flooding. Today, our railroad continues to operate regular steam- and diesel-powered tourist trains on our full 10 miles of track between Greenbank and Hockessin. In recent years, our railroad has become a popular site for weddings, birthdays, family reunions and a variety of other events. Our Board of Directors, staff and volunteers contribute countless hours of work each year into making the railroad the successful enterprise it is today, and they do it so that future generations will have a living awareness of the history, industry and beauty of the Red Clay Valley.

The Delaware Art Museum’s stunning galleries contain many treasures! As a 105-year-old institution, the museum also houses hundreds of works by Delaware native Howard Pyle as part of its founding collection. Known as the father of American illustration, Pyle illustrated pieces for Mark Twain, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Oliver Wendell Holmes. Over a century later, his iconic images of pirates served as inspiration for Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” films. Another treasure is the Bancroft Collection of Pre-Raphaelite Art. The largest collection outside the United Kingdom, the museum’s vast holdings include more than 150 paintings, drawings, photographs, illustrated books, and decorative arts dedicated to this Victorian-era art movement. The museum also has an impressive presentation of American art spanning 200 years. This collection includes artists such as Edward Hooper, John Sloan, Dale Chihuly, Thomas Eakins, and Winslow Homer. The Copeland Sculpture Garden and outdoor labyrinth also offer visitors a pleasant walk in the lush surroundings. In addition to a world-class collection, the Delaware Art Museum offers vibrant family programs, free Thursday evenings, Studio Art Classes, contemporary art, and rotating special exhibitions throughout the year. Be sure to see “Wonder and Whimsy: The Illustrations of W. Heath Robinson,” on view through May 21, 2017. In America for the first time, this retrospective features the work of turn-of-thecentury British illustrator Heath Robinson. Famous for his humorous, dramatic, and gently satiric illustrations inspired by Victorian and Art Nouveau styles, this exhibition includes scenes from Shakespearean plays and the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen. “The Original Mad Man: Illustrations by Mac Conner” opens June 24, 2017 and features illustrations from an era when commercial artists helped to redefine American style and culture. An original “Mad Man,” Mac Conner created advertising campaigns for a variety of products during the 1950s and 1960s, when the advertising industry was at its height and centered on Madison Avenue. Delaware Symphony Orchestra’s 2016-2017 season continues with five more concerts The Delaware Symphony Orchestra’s (DSO) 2016-2017 season continues with five concerts scheduled between Feb. 24 and May 12, 2017.The Feb. 24 concert, third in the DSO’s Classics series, features internationally acclaimed pianist Alon Goldstein performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1, with the orchestra conducted by Music Director David Amado. For the next concert, on Friday, March 24, famed mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves will be soloist in the smoldering El Amor Brujo Ballet Suite, by Manuel de Falla; and the DSO’s Classics season concludes on May 12, with a celebration of Russian music featuring Rachmaninoff’s 3rd piano concerto, performed by guest artist Sergei Babayan, and Tchaikovsky’s 4th Symphony. The Classics Series concerts are performed in Copeland Hall at the Grand Opera House, 818 North Market Street, in downtown Wilmington, on Friday evenings at 7:30 p.m. Reserved seat tickets for the concert are $75, $45, and $14. The Grand Opera House Box Office handling fees of $2 - $6 will be added. Student tickets are $10 for those 21 or under with student ID. The final concert on the Chamber Series will be on Tuesday, April 25, at 8:00 p.m., when Amado will conduct Feldman’s Samuel Beckett, Words and Music and Sir William Walton’s Façade. Tickets for the concerts are $60 each, Students (21 and under with ID), $14, plus $2 per ticket service charge. All seats are general admission.
