Located where Caroline Street meets Water Streett in historic Charlestown, the Marina features some of the newest upgrades on the Upper Chesapeake Bay. The Marina’s new, gorgeous, floating, composite docks, completely new electric and WiFi networks compliments the Marina’s reputation for security and cleanliness. With beautiful views of the North East River, the Marina offers visitors 103 slips capable of holding boats between 17- and 40-feet, as well as jet-ski slips, land storage and ramp memberships. As the only marina to provide rental motor boats on the Upper Chesapeake Bay, the North East River Marina also has a wide variety of affordable Pontoon boats, Kayaks and S.U.P’s, available to rent by the hour, day or week. We have full maintenance services year-round that provides OMC, Mercury and Volvo parts, restoration and repairs. Summer and winter storage, full winterization, shrink wrap service, spring detailing and canvass repairs can also be found on site. In the ship’s store, you may find all of your nautical needs and supplies. The next time you visit the North East River Marina, come hungry. Throughout the summer season, the Marina throws monthly themed parties for its members -- such as the Pasta Beach Party, the Lobster Party and the Chili Cook-Off. So step back in time to the less-hurried environment of the North East River Marina in the quaint town of Historic Charlestown, Md., located just minutes from four sandy beaches and nearby Delaware.

Milburn Orchards: The destination for family fun Milburn Orchards is your destination for family fun! With seasonal events ranging from Easter egg hunts to pictures with Santa, the Milburn family has been making memories since 1902. The fourth generation of the family currently runs Milburn Orchards, with the fifth-generation learning the ropes. There’s always something new and exciting to discover! Milburn Orchards celebrates each harvest of the year, beginning with cherries in June, and blueberries, blackberries, peaches, raspberries and grapes as the summer progresses, and apples each Labor Day Weekend to October. They offer U-Pick Adventures, allowing families to “harvest” their own fruits. But more than that, it’s an opportunity for kids to put down the devices and enjoy the great outdoors. The educational group tours are a fun way to gain in-depth knowledge about food origins and how the farm works. The Milburn motto “Your Farm for Family Fun” is so appropriate. The Summer Harvest Parties, celebrating cherries, berries and peaches, offer old-fashioned fun for kids of all ages. Of course, you can always visit the BarnYard Buddies in the Big BackYard during the Farm Market Hours. The Fall Festival Weekends are a destination for families, with unique activities including hayrides through the apple orchard, a paintball shooting gallery, U-Make scarecrows, super sling, corn maze, and so much more, plus plenty of Pinterest-worthy fall decorations. You may not know Milburn’s also boasts venues, including a beautiful pavilion, for fully customizable parties of all sizes. From birthdays to family reunions, corporate events, and even weddings, Milburn’s can make your event one to remember. For a unique get-together, check out night-time bonfires and hayrides. Complete your day on the farm with lunch on the Orchard View Deck. With a variety of sandwiches and other meal options, there’s something for everyone. Got a sweet tooth? Milburn’s hand-dipped ice cream from Hershey’s and Kilby Cream to create tons of treats! Don’t forget to visit the Farm Market and Bake Shoppe for the famous apple cider donuts, Milburn pies, pastries, breads and more. You’ll also find fresh produce, meats, jams, jellies, sauces and everything else you need to make a delicious dinner when you get home. With something for everyone, no one will leave Milburn’s hungry.

Cecil County Fair takes place July 19 through July 27 There is something for everyone at the Cecil County Fair. One of Cecil County’s most popular annual events returns to the Fair Hill Fairgrounds at 4640 Telegraph Road in Elkton on July 19 and runs through July 27. Highlights of the fair include the carnival midway, demolition derby, tractor and truck pulls, a professionally-sanctioned rodeo, and numerous shows for people of all ages. There are also many competitions for 4-H youths and the public. Try the pie-eating contest, cow chip toss, hay bale toss, big wheel race, 5-K run/walk, and more. Tens of thousands of people turn out for the Cecil County Fair, and the event is a tradition for many. The Cecil County Fair’s origins can be traced to 1953, when members of the Calvert, Cecilton, and Colora Granges first discussed the idea of having an annual fair to promote agriculture in the county. The Cecil County Fair continues to celebrate the area’s rich agricultural heritage, and provides opportunities for children and adults to explore many different aspects of farming through numerous agricultural displays that will be showcased throughout the fair. There is a wide variety of entertainment, with each night featuring something different. Live music is an important part of the fair, and a listing of this year’s performers and other activities and attractions can be found on the fair’s website at www.cecilcountyfair.org.

Steak & Main—
a star in the culinary world Steak & Main, located in North East, was purchased and remodeled by Tony Covatta in September of 2003. Steak & Main became the crowning star in the culinary world for restaurants between Philadelphia and Baltimore, and a favorite for professional food critics and your everyday gastro-skeptics. The Covatta family has plenty of history in the culinary world, having owned 22 restaurants from Philadelphia to the Main Line and now to North East, Maryland. The restaurants have been featured on six different Travel Channel shows. “My grandfather told me no matter what you name your restaurant, make sure your customers call it ‘Tony’s,’” explained Tony Covatta. “That’s how you tell the customer has become your friend.”

North East River Yacht Club: Gateway to recreation and boating on the Upper Chesapeake Bay
Since its beginnings almost 90 years ago, the North East River Yacht Club has offered its members some of the most spectacular views imaginable of the Chesapeake Bay. But there is so much more than just the sun setting off the water to make this one of the premier yacht clubs of its kind.
Activities Our marina incorporates a state-of-the-art system of floating piers and wave attenuators which provide access to 69 modern slips, 12 moorings, transient space, on-site pump-out facility, and dinghy launch and storage. The club has moorings and slips of varying sizes and depths suitable for power and sail boats. Slip and mooring seasonal rentals are available to club members only. The club welcomes new member applications. You don’t have to have a boat to be part of the community. We welcome social members, too. The club offers a host of activities, events, entertainment and dining throughout the year -- Birthday Karaoke, Oyster Roast, Murder Mystery Dinner, Commodores Ball, and Rain Gutter Regatta, to name a few. The club has a beach ramp capable of launching small boats on dollies. Limited rack storage for small boats is available for a seasonal fee. Big or small, power or sail, young or “young at heart,” we select venues and activities that can be enjoyed by all. Club cruises provide opportunities to explore our beautiful bay, find out about unique destinations and ports of call, as well as insider tips that you won’t find
elsewhere. Whether it’s our modern marina with floating walk-ons, the camaraderie of our cruising flotillas, participating in the many social activities on land, enjoying a great meal in our restaurant, or just hanging out with fellow water lovers in the bar, the club has plenty to offer boaters. The club offers a full season of PHRF handicap sail racing, right in front of the club. You don’t have to own a sailboat to join in the fun. Skippers are always looking for able crew members, and the race committee welcomes volunteers. We provide a wonderful setting to bring your own kayak and paddle around the upper Chesapeake. The club also has two paddleboards that are available for member use. Bring old friends, make new friends, relax and unwind. The club welcomes members and transient guests to tie-up to the outside of the perimeter attenuators when visiting the club or attending club functions.
Clubhouse Join us in the clubhouse to relax with family and friends. Dining facilities are superb, and open all year, from the informality of the outdoor patio to the cordial atmosphere of the large and airy dining room with the commanding view of the upper Chesapeake Bay. The Burgee Lounge and bar provides a welcoming “watering hole” after a busy day on the water. It’s a perfect venue for a successful party or special private event, or that unforgettable wedding.

Cecil College proactive in offering educational opportunities with Early College Academy Over the last decade, Cecil College has taken a proactive approach to expand its dual credit opportunities for secondary students. These actions led to the creation of the Early College Academy (ECA), which allows students to work toward an associate degree while still in high school. The pilot program launched five years ago in partnership with the Oxford Area School District in Chester County, Pa. Students entering ninth grade with the highest academic performance qualify to register for this program. They start as freshmen and sophomores by taking introductory-level college classes and study skills training from Cecil College professors who travel to the high school. The teens take higher-level courses, such as statistics and composition, at the North East Campus – located just six miles away – during their junior and senior years. In the spring of 2018, the first cohort of 15 Oxford students completed their high school diploma and an Associate of Arts degree in General Studies from Cecil College. Cecil College has been on the leading edge of a national trend for concurrent high school and community college learning, which is more prevalent in Midwestern and Southern states than on the East Coast. For the 2019 Commencement Ceremony at Cecil College, the Oxford Area School District came out en mass to support the second cohort of students as they crossed the stage. With the success of these students, Cecil College now
offers Early College Academy cohorts with Oxford schools, regional homeschool families, and in partnership with Cecil County Public Schools. ECA is a pathway to shortening the higher education process, thus reducing the cost, and preparing students for a college environment at an earlier age. Currently, at least ten states require high schools to offer students a chance to earn college credits. A growing body of academic studies has generally found that dual-enrollment students perform better academically both in high school and in college, requiring less remedial work. ECA has become a responsive opportunity in the region as Oxford has 89 students enrolled, there are 22 homeschooled students and more than 70 students from Cecil County as Perryville High School will begin a new cohort in the fall of 2019. The average GPA is 3.1 for college-level courses for ECA students. Students who have graduated from Cecil College ECA have transferred to Millersville University, West Chester University, University of Pittsburgh, PittBradford-University of Pittsburgh, Drexel University, Messiah College, Penn State University, Penn State Harrisburg, Penn State Brandywine, Wilmington University, Towson University, Franklin and Marshall College, Delaware Valley University, Kutztown University, Bloomsburg University and Kansas State University. www.cecil.edu

What is next for the Itsy Bitsy Candy Store that is bursting at the seams with vintage candy, retro soda pop, Jelly Belly, gummies, local honey and delicious chocolates? North East Chocolates is well known in the community for their delicious chocolate salted caramels, but also for an extensive selection of nostalgic candy packed into the adorable 225-square-foot Itsy Bitsy Candy Store located in the heart of Main Street in North East. No matter your age, you are guaranteed to find a treat that will spark a memory and transport you back to your childhood. PEZ collectors have also been drawn to the large display of dispensers and collector’s sets. Starting out with only three collections to choose from, The Itsy Bitsy Candy Store now boasts 28 boxes on the shelves. In a previous article, owner Christie McDevitt stated, “I feel like the candy store is growing up with me, and I am growing up with the candy store.” That could not be more true as McDevitt has expanded inventory to triple the assortment of gummy candies in addition to doubling the salt water taffy flavors. So, what is next for this tiny little shop? Expansion! McDevitt exclaims, “There are a ton of ideas that are on the brink of execution. Our biggest hurdle right now is keeping up with volume and obviously space. We would love to get a stronghold on production to offer our specialty products more consistently and also pick up local bulk chocolate distribution after the unexpected closing of Cannon’s Supply Store, which has been such a staple to local makers for over 40 years.” Due to space limitations, North East Chocolates is in the process of teaming up with their friends at Sweet Spice Bake Shop to display Merckens and Peters Chocolate melts, in addition to edible glitter, sprinkle mixes, and gift packaging. The goal is to pick up where Cannon’s Supply left off in the chocolate department. Pricing will remain similar to Cannon’s and return customers will receive discounts for refilling their bulk bags. “Many families bake and make candy together at home and we will be a part of those memories,” McDevitt said. Follow ‘North East Chocolates’ on Facebook for updates on the many fun and exciting updates that are coming soon. Visit their website at www. nechocolates.com for online ordering which can be picked up in-store or shipped anywhere in the United States. The Plumpton Park Zoo:
A great place to spend time with your kids If you have not been to the Plumpton Park Zoo in a while you are in for a treat! Located at 1416 Telegraph Road in Rising Sun, the zoo maintains a beautiful, exotic collection of wild animals for the public to enjoy. The owners, Cheryl and Nick Lacovara, rescued the zoo after the facility was shut down in July 2010. Most thought the facility would never reopen, but this couple, who are exotic animal keepers from Mullica Hill, New Jersey, have in five years totally revitalized the park. The zoo is now a permanent community-supported institution for everyone to enjoy. It is evident that these animals are their passion as you walk the well-maintained grounds and view how healthy and happy their animals are. The following is a list of the animals that you can view in their natural habitats: Mammals at the Plumpton Park Zoo The zoo is home to: Alpaca, American Bison, African Crested Porcupine, an African Serval, Arctic Foxes, Bactarin Camels, Bengal Tiger, a Binturong, Black Backed Jackals, American Black Bear, a Bobcat, Eurpean Brown Bear, Fallow Deer, a Giraffe, Llama, Pot Bellied Pigs, Prairie Dogs, Pygmy Goats, Reeves Muntjac, Sheep, Siamang Apes, Sicilian Donkeys, a Silver Fox, Timber Wolves, an African Watusi, a White Bengal Tiger, a White Faced Capuchin Monkey and a pair of Zebra. Birds at the Plumpton Park Zoo The zoo is home to: Barred Owl, Blue and Gold Macaw, Blue-eared Pheasant, Chinese Silky Chickens, Ducks, Harris’s Hawk, Heritage Turkey, Peacocks, Red Golden Pheasant, Sandhill Crane, and Silver Pheasant, Scarlet Macaw, Umbrella Cockatoos, Goffin Cockatoo, Sun Conure. Reptiles at the Plumpton Park Zoo The zoo is home to: African Sulcata Tortoise, American Alligator, Ball Python, Burmese Python, Corn Snake, Gecko, Green Iguana, Hermann Tortoise, Red Iguana, Red Footed Tortoise, and Red Eared Sliders. Education is an important mission of the Plumpton Park Zoo. Summer Camps give children an in-depth opportunity to learn about various animals at the zoo. The Plumpton Park Zoo is happy to offer group rates for schools, scouts, and other groups that wish to visit the zoo. Admission to the zoo is only $12 which makes it a very affordable family outing. In addition the zoo also is a great place for birthday parties, family picnics, corporate events and weddings.
