C & D Canal Museum now open weekends

Visit the Official C&D Canal Museum, which is now open on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. through mid-October. This nautical jewel is dedicated to the 19th century origin and the continuing history of the 14-mile-long canal that connects the Delaware Bay to the Chesapeake Bay. It became the third busiest shipping canal in the entire world by creating a shortcut of 300 nautical miles between Philadelphia and Baltimore and other active ports. Find out how a privately-owned hand-dug, lock-driven canal built in an historic waterfront town, inspired a classic novel and a Broadway show, and then grew up to be a major contributor to commerce in today’s economy. See ancient fossils catalogued from the 1829 dig, marvel at canal diggers’ ingenious tools and feats of engineering, study extraordinary ship models, see a moving miniature display of the intricate workings of a canal lock and the actual steam driven engine and waterwheel that controlled the water levels in the locks. The museum is located in the actual early-1800s buildings that housed the workings of the canal locks. Be sure to sign the guest book at the Canal Toll Taker’s actual antique “partners” desk when you enter. The museum was curated and created over thirty years ago by the Army Corps of Engineers, the federal entity that designed and created the modern version of the C&D Canal. Located on the C&D Canal at the Army Corps of Engineers facility. Follow the Canal Museum signs through historic Chesapeake City, Md. Admission is free.

Cecil County playing host to Bassmaster Elite event this summer By Steven Hoffman Staff Writer

S

ome of the country’s best anglers will be competing in the waterways of the Upper Bay as Cecil County hosts the Bassmaster Elite Chesapeake Challenge from Aug. 13 to 16. This is one of only eight elite events on the tour, and thousands of spectators are expected to turn out for what will certainly be one of the highlights of the summer of 2015. “We’re really looking forward to this,” said Sandy Turner, the executive director of Cecil County Tourism, the organization that led the effort to bring the event to Cecil County over the last several years. The Bassmaster Elite competitions attract some of the best professional bass fishermen in the country. The professionals compete throughout the year to qualify for the major events. “Bassmaster is to fishing what the PGA is to golf and NASCAR is to racing,” Turner explained. There will be as many as 113 participants in the event. Each boat will have a marshal on board to make sure that all the rules are followed. This is not the first time that the county has played host to a Bassmaster event. “We hosted two Bassmaster Open events in 2009 and 2010,” explained Turner, “and we had a wonderful experience with that.” According to Turner, they started thinking about hosting an elite tour event back then, but it took time to put a successful bid together. There is significant competition to host the elite events. “We put a committee together,” Turner said “We got a partner that came to the table with us.” They submitted the application to host a 2015 event back in February of 2014. The application process took several months. They found out that the bid was successful last summer, at about the same time that Philadelphia was hosting a 2014 Bassmaster Elite event. Many of the anglers made a point to travel south to give the waters of the Chesapeake a try. For Turner and the other members of the planning team, the announcement that Cecil County would be the host site for 2015 was when planning for the event kicked into high gear. One of the advantages that Cecil County had during the bidding process was its proximity to population centers on the East Coast. Spectators will come from all around the Mid-Atlantic region. The event is expected to attract between 10,000 and 30,000 spectators. The event could generate about $2 million for the local economy. “A lot of the people will be eating in our restaurants and staying in our hotels,” Turner said, explaining that the impact will be spread throughout the county—and the surrounding counties, too. She believes that Cecil County’s other attractions, such as zoos and state parks, will shine for the visitors to the area. They were able to secure a number of important sponsors for the event, including three platinum sponsors—the Maryland Lottery, the Old Dominion Electric Cooperative, and the town of North East. Turner said that the professional anglers were pleased that an elite event would be held on the Chesapeake Bay. “We had a great reaction from the anglers,” Turner explained. “They were all saying how pleased they are to be coming to the area.” A full week of activities are being planned for what is being called Cecil County Bass Week. Many of the activities are centered on North East. The North East Community Park will be the setting for SummerFest, which will include music, food, vendors, children’s activities, and more. While the Bassmaster Elite Chesapeake Challenge won’t be televised live, the cameras will be rolling each day of the competition for a broadcast on ESPN2 and the Outdoor Channel. One of the main objectives of the fair is to keep people informed about the importance of agriculture in Cecil County.

Children can enjoy various activities, competitions, and games at the Cecil County Fair.

The Cecil County Fair—one of the county’s most popular annual events and an enduring tradition for many families in the area—will be returning to the Fair Hill Fairgrounds at 4640 Telegraph Road in Elkton from July 24 to Aug. 1. More than 75,000 people attend the 9-day fair each year, and the event features many family-friendly attractions, including hands-on activities. Everything from a pie-eating contest to the cow chip toss to a Big Wheel race is on the schedule, so there will be something for everyone each day of the fair. The carnival midway is always a favorite attraction for attendees. Other highlights this year are a demolition derby, tractor and truck pulls, a professionally-sanctioned rodeo, and many different shows. There are many competitions for youngsters involved with local 4-H programs, and competitions for the public, too. The Cecil County Fair’s origins can be traced to 1953, when members of the Calvert, Cecilton, and Colora Granges first discussed the idea of having an annual fair to promote agriculture in the county. The Cecil County Fair continues to celebrate the area’s rich

agricultural heritage, and provides opportunities for children and adults to explore many different aspects of farming through numerous agricultural displays that will be showcased throughout the fair. There are dozens of agricultural competitions at the fair, which is a way to not only showcase the products of local farmers, but to introduce a new generation to the importance of agriculture. Cecil County 4-H clubs are involved in the fair in various ways. As always, live music will be an important part of the fair, and a listing of this year’s performers will be available on the fair’s website. The Cecil County Fair has become a tradition for many local families because of the indelible mark that it leaves on youngsters—there are days and nights of summer fun to remember year after year. Fair organizers are mindful of the need to provide a fun experience for youngsters. Visit the fair’s website at www.cecilcountyfair.org for specific information about the 2015 schedule.

Recently voted #1 Steak in America by national television food network

STEAK & MAIN: The incredible, edible mashup of taste, television and celebration

By Richard L. Gaw Staff Writer Since it first opened its doors in 2003, Steak & Main in North East has become far more than a restaurant. It’s a foodie’s destination; a must-see stopover on a never-ending culinary journey; a cause for a celebration on an otherwise normal weeknight; and the place that has become known to the locals as simply “Tony’s Place,” as in, “Hey, why don’t we just go over to Tony’s Place for dinner tonight?” Steak & Main has won countless awards for its menu, and the hospitality of owner Tony Covatta and his staff extends as far as their knowing not only the first names of nearly everyone who comes in, but the names of their children as well. Its weekly sushi nights have become legendary throughout Cecil County, and its steak challenge events have drawn the likes of Adam Richman, host of “Man vs. Food” on the Travel Channel, who tossed in the towel on his inability to finish off Steak & Main’s 74-ounce steak challenge. Later, the restaurant hosted well-known competitive eater

Molly Schuyler, who, in Covatta’s words, simply “devoured” her steak challenge. Eventually, local legends begin to be known and admired well out of their home comforts, and Steak & Main is no exception. Recently, on Travel Channel’s “Greatest Steaks in America,” the show criss-crossed the entire country in search of the 12 best steak dinners. Steak & Main not only earned a spot on the list, it earned a first place finish. More recently, Covatta was a guest on “Food Mashups,” a popular on-line

culinary show hosted by the legendary cheese steak master Tony Luke, Jr. In the episode, Covatta introduced Luke to “The Spectrum,” a Covatta masterpiece of taste, made with various types of meats, veggies, cheese and other ingredients, and placed on a fresh roll. An amazing and ever-changing menu. Sushi nights that draw an overflow of appreciation. Guests who are treated like friends. Television shows and national recognition. “It’s all about welcoming customers

to your restaurant like they’re family,” Covatta told Cecil County Life in 2014. “It’s teaching your wait staff about wines. It’s allowing them to understand what ingredients are in our dishes, so that they’re not just serving dishes but are truly involved in the entire dining experience. In the back of the house, it’s teaching your chefs certain culinary skills. Our chefs love cooking and being creative, so I’m back there with them every day teaching them new things, and they in turn teach me new things.”

The Inn is the largest and most ornate building on Bohemia Avenue, a Victorian Gothic with Italianate and Stick decoration. The fine architectural details have been preserved, including the ornately stenciled ceilings and the American ceramic tile-work. Most of the rooms in the inn have views of the water, and they all offer private bathrooms and modern amenities, antiques and charming details.
