Lenape Builders, Inc: 36 years of building quality homes The Lenape (pronounced Len-apE) organization formed in 1978 and was named for a region of Chester County, Pa. in which the original partners were looking to invest and develop. Having built thousands of homes over the past 35 years, Lenape Builders Inc. has built a diverse portfolio of quality new homes throughout Delaware, southeastern

A tradition of quality at Minster's Jewelers Minster’s Jewelers was founded in July, 1895 by Jacob John Minster in Elkton, Md. Upon arriving in the United States in the 1870s, Jacob John was employed by Bailey, Banks, and Biddle as a watchmaker and jeweler. He believed in quality and integrity. He had a love for jewelery and the craft, which has been carried on through the generations. The third and fourth generations are taking Minster’s in a new direction with Custom Design Jewelry, designed and manufactured by Minster’s staff. It’s a new and original look, with quality to be passed on to future generations, in keeping with the traditional hometown atmosphere. Minster’s offers its clientele a wide range of jewelry, including diamonds, colored gemstones, karat gold, gold filled and silver jewelry, and watches.

CAMERAS ETC.: a mainstay on Newark’s Main Street since 1980 Dain Simons was ten years old in 1980, the year Cameras Etc. opened its second location, on Main Street in Newark. Thirty-five years later, he is the sole owner of a company that continues to defy the odds. The store front is rather unassuming - a flat brick building, nearly unchanged since the 1950s nestled between Days of Knights and the Iron Hill Brewery, two businesses that also have deep roots in the perpetually shifting marketplace of downtown Newark. Inside you will find a bright cozy show room full of new and used camera equipment. Don’t let the age of the building fool you. This is a thoroughly modern shop providing state-of-theart, high-end camera equipment along
with consumer-grade gadgets to fulfill anyone’s imaging needs. “We offer a unique experience here, an honest and intelligent retail environment which brings our customers back to us, time and time again. The kind of experience many people no longer associate with camera or electronics stores. It’s always been that kind of a place. It was like that when I bought my first camera here in 1987, and it’s like that now.” In 2014, Jim Cycyk, the company’s founder, made the decision to close the Wilmington store and retire, leaving the future of the Newark store up in the air. Dain saw the opportunity to continue evolving the business that he has known and loved for over 20 years.
“We are enjoying the recent influx of Wilmington customers who had previously shopped at the Market Street location, and we understand that Newark is a little bit of a hike, so we want to make their trip worthwhile. Plus a lot of these folks haven’t been to Newark in a while and are pleasantly surprised by how vibrant it has become. They’re happy to get something to eat or check out some of the other unique shops on Main Street.” Cameras Etc is one of very few stores in the tri-state area to offer a complete inventory of professional and amateur photographic supplies the core of which is the full line of Canon and Nikon cameras, lenses and accessories. They also stock a large selection of cases
and carrying gear from respected brands like ThinkTank, Lowepro and Black Rapid. Over the years, service has become a large part of Cameras Etc.’s business. They provide video duplication, copy work, scanning, printing, restoration, repair, passport photos, film processing and sensor cleaning.” “I think the secret of our success is that we strike a balance between competence and approachability. A lot of times you find too much of one extreme without the other. We want anyone to feel comfortable walking in here and asking us about photography and knowing they will get an informed answer.”

The Historic Odessa Brewfest, presented by Wilmington Trust, returns Sept.12 to the historic grounds of the 246-year-old Wilson-Warner House in Odessa. Beer lovers can expect to find more of everything at this year’s festival, with all proceeds benefitting the preservation and education efforts of the Historic Odessa Foundation. Brewfest will host nearly 40 of the finest regional and national craft breweries and feature farm-fresh local food and refreshments provided by Cantwell’s Tavern and the Roaming Raven food truck. The all-Delaware, live musical entertainment lineup includes reggae evangelists Spokey Speaky, the contemporary country stylings of The Hung Jury, acoustic jazz and blues artist Bruce Anthony, and acoustic modern rock musician Bob Stretch. An assortment of vendors will offer unique foods and gifts, specially selected to blend with the interests and fancy of beer enthusiasts. Fromage a Cheese Boutique from Middletown, a Best of Delaware 2014 winner, will be offering plates of cheeses paired with different styles of beer. Delaware Symphony Orchestra appoints Alan Jordan as executive director The 2015-16 concert season is also announced The Board of Directors of the Delaware Symphony Orchestra (DSO) has appointed veteran orchestra executive Alan Jordan to serve as its next executive director, beginning in September 2015. Jordan’s most recent position was as executive director of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, where he served for more than 16 years. He served in similar capacities at the New Hampshire Symphony Orchestra (1992-1999) and the Brevard (FL) Symphony Orchestra (1987-1992). Jordan’s appointment comes after an extensive nationwide search led by Symphony Orchestra consultant David Hyslop of Minneapolis. In his announcement, DSO President Charles W. Babcock, said, “Our Board is delighted to welcome an executive director with the competence, experience, and passion of Alan Jordan. With his leadership, we have great hopes and plans for our professional musicians, for our audiences, and for the cultural life of the State of Delaware.” Jordan is thrilled to be joining the DSO team. “The Delaware Symphony Orchestra has such a great reputation and history,” he noted. “I look forward to working with David Amado, the staff, musicians, board, and volunteers to fulfill the potential the DSO has for the people of Delaware.” Jordan graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor’s degree in Music as a Vocal Performance major in 1983. During his years as a student and following graduation, he served as Assistant Stage Manager and later Stage Manager for the Tanglewood Music Center and as House Manager of Jordan Hall and Instrument Librarian at the New England Conservatory. From 2001 to 2003, Jordan served on the Board of Directors of the League of American Orchestras, the national leadership service organization of American Orchestras. He currently serves on the League’s Communications Advisory Group and on the New Music For America Steering Committee. Previously, he has served on the League’s Public Value, Collaborative Data Project, and BMI Negotiations task forces, the Ford Made in America I and II steering committees, and on the Henry Fogel Consortium Commission steering committee. He is the immediate past chair of the New England Orchestra Consortium, and was previously that organization’s treasurer. Jordan will move to the Wilmington area from Vermont with his wife, Karen, who is a Choral Director. Daughter Katie, 24, received her master’s degree from The Juilliard School in May, 2014, and is now second horn with the Sarasota Orchestra, in Florida. His son, Christopher, 19, is entering his sophomore year at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music as a bass trombone performance major. Jordan’s tenure coincides with the launch of the DSO’s 2015-16 season, titled The Season of the Bells, which includes its Classics Concert Series of five programs and a Chamber Concert Series of four programs, as well as the Explorer Experience concerts for children. The season will be conducted by Maestro David Amado, as he begins his 13th year as Music Director of the DSO. Leading off the season will be a September 11 memorial concert featuring the Mozart Requiem, in collaboration with Mastersingers of Wilmington. Additional highlights of the season range from Berlioz to Shostakovich. Soloists include pianist Stewart Goodyear, violinist Bella Hristova, the Brasil Guitar Duo, and DSO principal tuba player Brian Brown. Every Classics Concert of the season

Delaware Art Museum
Dream Streets: Art in Wilmington 1970– 1990 is now on view at the Delaware Art Museum through September 27! This landmark exhibition celebrates two dynamic decades of flourishing artistic activity in Wilmington, Delaware, and features artists who emerged as key participants in this art community during that time. This exciting presentation showcases craft and design, drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, and more from over 50 artists, including Mitch Lyons, Tom Watkins, Mary Page Evans, and Flash Rosenberg. Also on view through September 6 is The Puzzling World of John Sloan. Best known as a member of the Ashcan School, painter and illustrator John Sloan (1871–1951) often focused his paintings and prints on city life and its people during the early 20th century. Between 1900 and 1910, Sloan produced a weekly series of word and picture puzzles for
the Philadelphia Press. This puzzling exhibition explores this little-known facet of Sloan’s early newspaper career, presenting 25 works from the Museum’s collection, including mazes, rebuses, hidden pictures, a cryptic letter, and a delicate watercolor. Sloan’s puzzles are deceptively simple in appearance but conceptually challenging, incorporating hidden words or images, pictorial puns, as well as components that require cutting, pasting, folding, or rearranging. The Delaware Art Museum is located at 2301 Kentmere Parkway, Wilmington, DE 19806. Hours: Wednesday: 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Thursday: 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., and Friday – Sunday: 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Admission: Adults (1959) $12, Seniors (60+) $10, Students (with valid ID) $6, Youth (7-18) $6, and Children (6 and under) free. Admission fees are waived Thursdays after 4:00 p.m. and Sundays thanks to support from

Dewey Beach Enterprises (DBE), developer and owner of the Lighthouse Cove Resort, is excited to share a summer update to the new expansion of the mixed-use resort in Dewey Beach. The Lighthouse Cove expansion includes new luxury bayside condominiums and initiates an interior parking garage to accommodate more on-site parking. The first level of the expanded parking deck will create additional parking spaces for Lighthouse Cove operations. “We are thrilled with our progress to date, and our expansion plans are the direct result of our success and the commitments we have honored,” stated E. Thomas Harvey, DBE president. The new bayside condominiums are scheduled for delivery within the next few weeks. DBE enjoyed a phenomenal firstyear reception with The Residences at Lighthouse Cove penthouse condominiums. “The pricing threshold achieved to date at the Residences at Lighthouse Cove is unprecedented in Dewey Beach, in part, due to the First Class amenities that are available on site,” stated Thomas J. Hanna, Vice President of Harvey, Hanna & Associates. The next phase of construction is expected to employ 150 persons from a multiplicity of construction disciplines. Across the Lighthouse Cove resort, DBE further generated 83 full-time and seasonal jobs at the Hyatt Place Hotel; supported more than 100 full-time and seasonal jobs at the onsite Que Pasa and Lighthouse Restaurants; and created hundreds of construction jobs of all disciplines. Phase 1 of Lighthouse Cove, now complete, encompasses the first-ever
Hyatt Place Hotel in Delaware; 16 residential penthouse condominiums atop the Hyatt Place Hotel; two award-winning restaurants; recently expanded public bayside beach; Kevin Fleming Art Gallery; and the East of Maui sports recreation kiosk. By Anita Moos Organic Eggs, bread, milk, quinoa, goji berries…check. Yoga, cooking classes, discussions on spiritual wisdom...also check. That’s right! Newark Natural Foods located in Newark Shopping Center is much more than a healthy foods grocery store. Workshops, exercise classes, cooking classes, movies and much more are staples offered to the community. Often, the offerings are free! With two new and beautiful community rooms on the lower level of the store, everyone is invited to attend fun and educational offerings throughout the year. Besides stretching your body, you can also stretch your mind and expand your culinary flair. For instance, there is a free fascinating discussion about Spiritual Wisdom on Karma and Reincarnation on Aug. 23. On Aug. 15, you can attend an interactive cooking demonstration, “Cool Waters and Cold Salads,” where you will be able to create three summer salads using local vegetables, including zucchini and green beans. You will taste these salads while enjoying several freshly made waters and tea, all very easy to prepare. How about a little exercise for the body? There are several yoga classes to choose from. The best part? Everyone is welcome to attend these classes. Check out the list of ongoing events online at Newarknaturalfoods.com or stop in the
store for event dates, times and cost. Additionally, do you need space to host an event? You can easily, and inexpensively, rent a community room during the week and/or on the weekend. Call the office at 302-368-5894 for all the details. What else is offered at Newark Natural Foods? Hungry but don’t have time to cook? How about stopping by Newark Natural Foods’ Café 67 where you will find a wide variety of culinary delights prepared on a daily basis from ingredients found in the store...all healthy and all delicious. Plus, they boast the area’s only all organic salad bar with over 60 fresh items to choose from. Looking for something hot and delicious? Every day different tasty and good-for-you dishes are served at the hot bar. You’ll also find salads, sandwiches, personal pizzas and a host of other foods catered to every diet. Vegan? GlutenFree? Soy-Free? Vegetarian? Carnivore? No problem! Breakfast, lunch and dinner are freshly prepared daily. Eat-in or take
out. Try Café 67…you’ll be back for more! What about their Farmers’ Market? Why would a grocery store compete with itself by hosting a weekly outdoor farmers’ market where you can buy fresh-picked, local produce at wholesale prices? Because Newark Natural Foods is a co-operative that is owned by members of the community, yet it is a store where everyone is welcome to shop and dine. However, the mission far exceeds the basics of ‘just selling product for a profit’ as many stores do; it is much more community-centric and its roots run much deeper. Five key ingredients are a focus of their mission: Connecting with community and welcoming all; Fostering food security through greater access, affordability and ethical practices; Empowering healthy and sustainable living; Promoting a stronger and more resilient local economy with an emphasis on local production; and
Maintaining our commercial viability. Hosting the market is a way to invite you to meet and learn from local farmers, experience the sweet taste of their seasonal produce and become empowered to making healthy food choices for you and your family. Newark Natural Foods truly is the eat good, feel good, do good grocer!

Lewes Historical Society hosts 52nd Outdoor Antiques Show on Aug. 1 The Lewes Historical Society is celebrating the 52nd Anniversary of its Outdoor Antiques Show on Aug. 1 at the Lewes Historic Campus at Second and Shipcarpenter Streets in beautiful downtown Lewes. The show begins at 9 a.m. and lasts until 4 p.m. General admission is $5, and children under 12 can enter for free. The proceeds benefit the Society and are used in educational and preservation programming. Nearly 60 high-quality antiques dealers participate in the show, featuring 18th century to early 20th century antiques. All pieces are authentic and represent a wide range of prices. There is something for every taste and every level of collecting sophistication at the show. “No two antique shows are alike. Our vendors bring their best antiques, so you can take home a real treasure,” says Antiques Show Committee Chairperson Cindy Foster. In addition to fine antiques, The Lewes Historical Society will offer tours of many of the museums on the Lewes Historic Complex, where the Outdoor Antiques Show is held. With purchase of the Antiques Show admission, the public is welcome to explore the Midway School #178 (c.1898), Burton Ingram House (c. 1785), and Rabbit’s Ferry House (c. 1741). Each property clearly illustrates the impact of the sea on the community and Lewes’s penchant for moving buildings from site to site, as all of these buildings have been moved from other locations in Lewes or surrounding communities. The ambiance of the Outdoor Antiques Show, inside the shady grove of mature oaks, magnolias, hollies and cypress and surrounded by nine of The Lewes Historical Society’s historic house museums adds to the experience. Bring the kids for fun activities. Lewes was once a busy maritime hub of activity

Hardcastle Gallery is a haven for artists George Hardcastle & Sons, Inc., the art supply and frame shop, was established in Wilmington, Delaware in 1888. In 1946, ownership was assumed by Bayard Taylor Berndt, a well-known local artist, and his brother-in-law Ray Coakley. Berndt invited local painters to display their works in his Shipley Street store, establishing Delaware’s first art gallery. Berndt, who was a daily presence at Hardcastles until 1980, had a great influence on the growing Wilmington art community. Now located in Centreville about five miles north of downtown Wilmington, Hardcastle Gallery remains a haven for artists who follow the “Brandywine School” of painting originated by renowned artist Howard Pyle. Today, many artists, including W. James McGlynn and C. Phillip Wikoff, fondly remember Berndt for his encouragement of established and budding artists. His son David, who worked and learned with him for 14 years before assuming ownership of the gallery, was instilled with his fathers philosophy of supporting the local art community. And so the tradition continues...
