Ivy Gables: North Wilmington’s newest Assisted Living Community
Courtesy photos (5)
Nestled on five wooded acres in historic Ardentown, Del., Ivy Gables is North Wilmington’s newest assisted living community. Owners George and Tammy Loudon have 10 years of experience in assisted living ownership, along with a keen eye for elegant living and excellence in care and customer service, and have taken what was once a YWCA, and turned it into this hidden gem. From the moment people walk into the lobby, everyone comments what a warm and welcoming environment the community has. Ivy Gables has 24 studio apartments, as well as some one-bedroom options. There are multiple simple, yet elegant and intimate public areas, as well as a beautiful dining room and Great
Room, both complete with gas fireplaces for an additional warm and home-like atmosphere. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, residents of Ivy Gables are escorted to appointments in style in a London cab. Ivy Gables allows its residents the stress-free environment of both independent and assisted living by offering three restaurant-style meals a day, dedicated arts and entertainment, weekly housecleaning services, weekly linen exchange, daily towel service, and as little or as much handson care needed by its trained staff of compassionate caregivers. Happy hour happens weekly with live entertainment, and across the parking lot, residents are entitled to complimentary shows by the Candlelight Dinner Theatre.
We asked the family of our first resident what their experience has been: “After four months of managing in-home care for our Mom, we decided to look at some assisted living communities in our area. Although very nice, the ones we visited seemed a little overwhelming to Mom. A friend told us about a newly renovated community in Arden that had just re-opened. We decided to check it out. Thus began our love affair with Ivy Gables, a beautifully appointed 24-room senior living community nestled in the community of Ardentown, which just happens to be five minutes from our home. We particularly liked that it was a small community, knowing that it would be more comforting to Mom.
“Of course, what’s a beautiful community without warm and friendly people to bring it to life? The staff at Ivy Gables outshines all of its beautiful appointments! They are top-notch, professional folks who welcomed us and have gone the extra mile to make our Mom (and us) feel at home! Knowing that our Mom is safe and in the hands of such kind and loving folks, has given us such peace of mind!” – Sharon T. Clearly, Ivy Gables has much to offer its residents and their families! If you’d like to speak with someone directly, or schedule a personal tour and lunch, please call Director of Community Relations, Laurie Seidle at 302-475-9400, or email lseidle@ IvyGablesSeniorLiving.com.

A tradition of quality at Minster's Jewelers Minster’s Jewelers was founded in July, 1895 by Jacob John Minster in Elkton, Md. Upon arriving in the United States in the 1870s, Jacob John was employed by Bailey, Banks, and Biddle as a watchmaker and jeweler. He believed in quality and integrity. He had a love for jewelery and the craft, which has been carried on through the generations. The third and fourth generations are taking Minster’s in a new direction with Custom Design Jewelry, designed and manufactured by Minster’s staff. It’s a new and original look, with quality to be passed on to future generations, in keeping with the traditional hometown atmosphere. Minster’s offers its clientele a wide range of jewelry, including diamonds, colored gemstones, karat gold, gold filled and silver jewelry, and watches.

Two Stones Pub opens in Hockessin! If you have ever been to the Two Stones Pub locations in Newark, North Wilmington or Kennett Square, you have already gotten to enjoy what owners Mike Stiglitz and Ben Muse had in mind when they first started the franchise several years ago. It’s the simple combination of great food and great beer – served in a friendly, neighborhood-like setting – that has been the hallmark of the establishment’s success. With that in mind, Stiglitz and Muse took over the former Mike & Nick’s Italian Sports Bar in Lantana Square in Hockessin and, after a huge face-lift, officially opened the doors on their newest location earlier this year. Although slightly smaller than the three other Two Stones’ locations, the Lantana Square restaurant captures the same signature decor. Guests are welcomed to its ‘L’-shaped bar – constructed from repurposed wood – and get to choose from 20 draft beers and tap, and another 100 varieties in bottled form. Additionally, a handful of 2SP Brewing beers are always available. Outside, a temperature-controlled, upscale “beer garden,” complete with a wet bar, is perfect for a summer evening with friends, or a private party. Inside, executive chef Sean Howell has created an eclectic – and seasonal – menu of burgers, wings, tacos and bar snacks, as well as off-the-hook items like

crispy Garbanzo beans and tofu; vegan white bean and quinoa wraps; blackened Norwegian salmon; and Andouille stuffed meatloaf. “We had a plan from day one for establishing a restaurant in Hockessin,” Stiglitz said. “When we were first planting our ideas, I took a map (of New Castle County and beyond) and put a dot in the middle of it. I drew three concentric circles around and it, and Hockessin was in the middle of two of those circles.” Stiglitz said that the concept of Two Stones Pub – restaurant first, bar second – is a perfect fit for the demographics of Hockessin, which have drawn a wide swath of the 30-45-age market to the Lantana Square restaurant – from sports fans catching the games on large-screen TVs, to families relaxing over a great meal. “Our customers in Hockessin demand a high quality of service and food from us, and we enjoy that, because it asks us to reach those standards,” he said. “By asking us to be the best, they make us want to continue to improve who we are.” For more information about Two Stones Pub’s Lantana Square location, including menus and beer selections, visit www. twostonespub.com, or call 302-239-2200. Dancers perform in full-length ballets at Mid-Atlantic Ballet Mid-Atlantic Ballet (MAB) has a 19-year tradition of classical ballet instruction that focuses on ballet as the foundation for all styles of dance. Artistic director Patrick Korstange and his staff are all highly trained and active dancers in the community. The instructors promote dancers upon their demonstrated ability and maturity level. Instead of recitals, we give our dancers the opportunity of performing in full-length ballets. We perform two full-length ballet performances at Mitchell Hall on the University of Delaware campus during the year. Our ballets feature original choreography by our Artistic Director and his staff. Once dancers are promoted to the trainee program, they are eligible for all MAB performances. All levels of the ballet are able to participate in our end of year Dancers’ Showcase in June. A key advantage of MAB for our parents is the low cost of supplying their child with the basics needed for dance class. Parents only need to buy tights, leotard and ballet shoes for their children. We offer these items for sale new or gently used in our studio. MAB provides, with the help of our talented wardrobe department, the costuming required for performances. MAB is fortunate to have a new state-of-the-art dance studio. In May, 2016, we moved to our new location at 506 Interchange Boulevard, Newark, off Elkton Road, accessible via major highway routes. There are restaurants and shops at Suburban
Plaza within ½ mile distance for parents to visit while their dancer is in class or rehearsal. The building is accessible to the disabled and offers close, free parking. MAB’s 6,300-square-foot facility features three spacious, air-conditioned studios with sprung floors. Our dancers form a tight community of friends. Together Courtesy photos (3) at every level, they develop skills, grow in ability and prepare to perform. MAB encourages our students to respect each other’s abilities and talents and build each other’s confidence to perform in front of the public. We also have very active family and member participation in all of our programs, our performances and operations. Outside of our studio, MidAtlantic ballet performs at outreach events for the community, local schools and hospitals. We bring the artistry of ballet and the message of fitness through dance, to the greater Newark community.

Delaware Symphony Orchestra announces 2016-2017 season of classic concerts Series Highlighted by Mezzo Soprano Denyce Graves, Mahler’s Fifth and Beethoven Focus The Delaware Symphony Orchestra announces its 2016-2017 season of five Classics Series concerts, including guest appearances by major personalities in the classical music world and repertoire including symphonies by Mahler, Brahms, Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky. DSO Music Director David Amado invites all to “Join us to celebrate masterpieces that span three hundred years during our 111th season. This is music not to be missed!” The season begins Sept. 23 with violinist Jaime Laredo and cellist Sharon Robinson performing the Double Concerto written for them by André Previn, winner of the Delaware Symphony Orchestra’s 20162017 A. I. du Pont Composer’s Award. The concert will close with the monumental Symphony No. 5 by Gustav Mahler. On Nov. 18, the 2014 winner of the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, Jinjoo Cho, will perform the Violin Concerto by Erich Korngold, known for his film scores, including the classic “Robin Hood” with Errol Flynn. The concert opens with Wagner’s Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde. Carrying forward the dual themes of love and cinema, the second half includes Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story and Ravel’s Bolero. The DSO will begin a multi-year survey of all the major symphonic works of Beethoven on February 24, 2017, when Wilmington favorite Alon Goldstein returns to perform the Piano Concerto No. 1. Anna Clyne’s fragile and affectionate Within Her Arms opens the program and the sunny Second Symphony of Brahms will conclude the concert. On March 24, 2017, the DSO will welcome the internationally acclaimed mezzo soprano Denyce Graves to perform the solo part in the Ballet Suite from Manuel de Falla’s El Amor Brujo. a glittering showpiece for both singer and orchestra. The program opens with Elgar’s beautiful Serenade for strings and concludes with Beethoven’s electric 7th Symphony.
The series finale, May 12, 2017, features an allRussian program filled with bravura. Stravinsky’s brittle, ascetic Ode—music once destined for an Orson Welles film—will be balanced by the ripe romanticism of Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto (popularized in the movie, “Shine”), played by Russian pianist Sergei Babayan, and the evergreen Fourth Symphony by Tchaikovsky. The 2016-2017 Classics Series concerts will all take place on Friday evenings at 7:30 p.m. in Copeland Hall at The Grand Opera House on North Market Street in downtown Wilmington, Del. The DSO is re-instituting reserved seating for its Classics Series concerts, and introducing a new three-tiered price structure, with regular ticket prices starting at $14. Students age 21 and under with ID can purchase tickets in any section for $10. Additional Grand Opera House Box Office fees will apply. Individual tickets are available at the Grand Opera House Box Office, 818 N. Market Street, Wilmington, Del. 19801, by phone at 302-652-5577 or 800-374-7263, or online at www.ticketsatthegrand.org. Discounted five-concert Classics Series subscriptions are available until September 23, for $60, $195, and $335; student subscriptions, $50. Until there’s a cure... There’s Kamp!
Did you know that every school day, 46 children will be diagnosed with cancer? Some of these kids will be cured...but sadly, some will not. Kids who suffer from cancer often miss out on getting to “be a normal kid.” They don’t get to attend school like other kids. They don’t get to play sports, or jump on their bikes and go for a ride. They don’t get to just “be a normal kid.” In June of 2007, the Kaylyn Elaine Warren Foundation was established to fulfill the dream and last wish of Kaylyn E. Warren who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on October 15, 2005 at the age of 17. Kay’s Dream was to help other kids suffering from all types of childhood cancers through awareness and by opening Kay’s Kamp - the First Oncology Camp in Delaware. We are hosting our 1st Annual STAND UP TO KIDS CANCER event on Saturday, August 13th, 2016 from 1:00pm - 6:30pm at Freedom Biker Church, 22 Parkway Circle, Newcastle, DE 19720. Live music will be provided by area musicians, and many vendors, volunteers and donors will gather to raise the funds needed to send kids, who’ve been diagnosed with cancer, to Kay’s Kamp. Won’t you help give these kids, who are fighting against this terrible disease, the gift of getting to “be a normal kid” for a week next summer? You can make this happen - here’s how: 1) DONATE: Please donate Items, Activities, or Event Tickets for the Silent Auction 2) VOLUNTEER: Please come help us at the event - we’d LOVE to have you!! 3) GIVE: Donate Financially to Kay’s Kamp (please make checks payable directly to Kay’s Kamp). KEWF Federal Tax ID #26-0487358 4) Please send Donations/Auction Items to: Natalie Allen, 5 Stoney Brae Rd., Newark DE 19711. (If you’d like to VOLUNTEER at the event, or have a question about donating, please call or text Natalie 302-528-7526 or send email to: TheFixerNatalie@gmail.com) It costs over $1000 to send a child to Kay’s Kamp for one week because they need special equipment, medical supplies and personnel on call 24/7. All proceeds from this event will go directly to Kay’s Kamp -- every single penny! Please help us make it possible for kids with cancer to enjoy a true summer camp experience in every way possible. With Warmest Regards, Natalie Allen, Co-Event Coordinator www.kayskamp.org Until there’s a cure...There’s Kamp!

Ensuring a great back to school transition Back to school time can be a source of nerves or excitement for many children. Some preparation goes a long way in making your child feel comfortable and optimistic. Here are five tips for a smooth transition back to school:
then simply listen. If they mention fears or struggles from last year, be supportive and positive. Offer encouragement by sharing that no problem is insurmountable and together you can work through any issues. A new school year offers a fresh beginning.
Start with an open conversation. Instead of a one-sided lecture on your expectations for this school year, ask how your child is feeling—
List goals for the year. After an honest conversation, talk about you and your child’s goals for this year. Focus all goals on making

improvements (e.g. raising a grade or becoming more organized) rather than achievements (e.g. getting all A’s). Break big goals into smaller steps. If your child wants to become better at math, define steps they can make to ensure that happens. Get organized at home. Prepare now for the new school year. Have your child tidy their desk and make a list of supplies to restock. Buy a new planner and have your child write their class schedule in the front. Hang a family/school calendar in a central location. Share your own systems for managing school paperwork with your child and discuss their organization ideas. Finally, designate an area for unloading backpacks and organizing papers. Get the brain school ready. Two or three weeks before school begins, have your child review last year’s textbooks and assignments for subjects like math and science—even if it’s just 10 minutes each evening. If reading has waned over summer break, reestablish that nightly habit. These efforts minimize regression and provide a helpful refresher on last year’s learning.
Consider creating a school year contract. The switch from summer leisure to a school schedule can feel abrupt for many children. Create an agreement between you and your child that sets expectations and goals, and outlines your child’s responsibilities as a student, and your support. This should be a constructive, encouraging process. It takes minimal effort to get your child mentally ready to return to school with a positive, motivated outlook. Model enthusiasm and optimism for a great year ahead. Assure your child that with hard work and a good attitude, good things will happen—and if problems arise, you will work together to correct them. These insights are provided by the Huntington Learning Center in ewark, Del. Newark,

Local foods and sustainable communities The United States is blessed with is what has been described as the most abundant food supply in the world. Unfortunately much of the food grown here in America is shipped far from where it is grown and then highly refined and processed and then shipped again before reaching the consumer. According to the USDA, more ’s than 63 percent of the country’s agricultural acreage is devoted to field crops like corn, soy, wheat and canola that mostly end up as ingredients in processed foods or as animal feed. This abundant food supply, though, can come with a number of costs—excessive shipping, environmental damage from the overuse of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, and the stripping d. of essential nutrients from our food. Our communities suffer from this decentralized and processed food system both environmentally and financially and our citizens suffer from rampant illness and obesity. A locally based agriculture, however, can help overcome many of these systemic problems. The environmental and dollar costs of transportation are reduced. Small, family-owned farms—which are
the backbone of a local food economy—are more likely to use sustainable farming methods and minimize the use of synthetic chemicals. The food grown on these farms is delivered fresh to the consumer, either through direct sales at farm stands, community supported agriculture (CSA) share boxes, and farmers’ mark markets. Both the Friday market in K Kennett Square and the Saturday market in New Garden, offer a wide array of local, seasonally fresh produce, cheeses, meats, and other nutritious fare. By buying locally, we keep our food dollars circulating in our community and provide our neighbors—the family farmers—with a meaningful and important way to earn a living. L Locally grown foods are also readily available at independently owned natural foods stores like Harvest Market—just a mile from the Pennsylvania line in Hockessin, Del. Harvest Market is committed to promoting local farmers and producers and offers a wide assortment of locally sourced fresh produce, dairy products, meats, breads and a variety of other products. All of these products are selected to be nourishing, sustainable and delicious.

Walking through an age of innovation Hagley showcases landmark collection of patent models By John Chambless Staff Writer
All photos by John Chambless unless otherwise noted.
I
n 1790, when the nation was young and ever-expanding, the Patent Act set up some rules for inventors. In an age of exploration and burgeoning technology, anyone who had a design for something new – or an improvement to an already existing item – could submit a written description, a drawing and a scale model to the U.S. Patent Office. Inventions were given such prominence that until 1836, every patent issued was personally signed by the President of the United States. Hagley Museum and Library in Wilmington has unveiled a huge addition to their permanent collection – the Rothschild Patent Model Collection of 4,101 models. At a February press conference announcing the gift to the museum, Hagley executive director David A. Cole, Jr. admitted that the staff is somewhat overwhelmed by the sheer scale. “It’s been an interesting year,” he said, smiling, as he discussed the decade-long association between Ann and Alan Rothschild and Hagley Museum that led to placing the collection in Delaware. Unpacking, cataloguing and conserving the patent models “will take well over a year,” Cole said. “There are 962 boxes of them to go through.” The models join 849 patent models that Hagley already held, along with the early innovations and patents from the DuPont family. On display in the Copeland Room of the Hagley Library are 100 of the models, placed behind glass doors. The display will change over time, with newly-catalogued models circulated through the cases. But that’s just the beginning. “These models will be used to inspire the innovator in everyone,” Cole said. As a repository for science and innovation, Hagley now has the world’s largest private collection of American patent models. Taken as a whole, the collection is a huge slice of American innovation. The models range from the mundane – napkin holders, boots, fruit baskets, folding chairs and fruit jar covers – to the exotic and ludicrously impractical, like “Improvement in Boats for Duck Shooting,” which was a platform with a decoy swan at each corner, and a pair of pants in the middle that a hunter would step into and float out into a pond. There are also medically dubious “Electro-Galvanic Chairs” from 1878 that gave electric current treatments, and dazzling machines that are as complex as anything produced during the machine age – such as a “Portable Engine” from 1879, a “Velocipede” bike from the same year, and a “Machine for Making Paper Collars” with all of its hundreds of moving metal parts. Everything from a new way to cut boot laces to improving locomotives was brought up by inventors, most of whom never saw their inventions produced. But the ingenuity of the designs – and the way they speak of an era of steam power and manual labor – make them fascinating. The model of a hand-cranked pulley system for “moving invalids from bed” resembles the systems being used in hospitals today. The “Artificial Sliding Hill” from 1869 was a tower and slide that was to be packed with ice. An elevator would take people to the top of the tower so they could slide down again and again.

Alan Rothschild donated his collection of U.S. Patent models to Hagley and spoke about his passion for collecting them.

“Most of these inventors did not make it big,” Cole said in his opening remarks. “But the important thing is the spirit behind them. These models are beautifully crafted, and are both working models of inventions and works of art in themselves.” There was a nationwide industry of model makers who would produce patent models for inventors who lacked the skill or materials to make the models themselves. The approved patent models were displayed in Washington, D.C., and visitors would flock to see them, eager to find out the latest innovations. By 1880, the Patent Office was running out of room to store all the models, and ended the model requirement. Many inventors still submitted models, however. By 1893, the models were taken out of public view. Fires in 1836 and 1877 destroyed thousands of them. Others were returned to the descendants of the inventors, and most went up for auction, scattered to collections. The Smithsonian took 3,500 of them for its collection. The models remained curiosities and collector’s items, but largely faded from the public eye. But enthusiastic collectors such as Alan Rothschild were fascinated by them. Speaking at the press conference, he admitted that he could talk for hours about patent models, but summed up his donation to Hagley by saying that he first saw one of the models in 1994 “and fell in love with them that day. I’m honored and pleased that Hagley is the new home for this collection. It has been Hagley’s mission to keep history alive and foster innovation, and I hope that these models are used as an incentive to spark new innovations.” Also speaking at the press conference was Elizabeth Dougherty of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, who gave a bit of context. “Over the past 225 years, our office has issued 9 million U.S. Patents,” she said. “Each one represents a mere thought being turned into threedimensional reality.” A match-making machine (1878). published a book, “Inventing a Better Mousetrap,” that will be sold at Hagley. It illustrates the whole collection and gives background on the purpose of the inventions and the people who came up with them. There are also do-it-yourself projects that aspiring inventors can tackle, step by step. After seeing just a small sampling of the collection, it’s possible to share the boundless optimism of these early inventors. In the lobby of the Hagley Library are patent documents signed by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, as well as the very silly 1875 prototype of a Pigeon Starter, a crude wooden cat shape that sprang up when a mechanism was tripped, scaring pigeons into flight so hunters could shoot them. The device was never put into use, because shooters soon turned to clay pigeons as an easier and more humane solution. But it’s intriguing to think just how much work someone put into this invention, and every one of the other models included in the collection. After seeing them, you may just want to go home and do some inventing of your own. Selected models will be on display in the Copeland Room of the Hagley Library on a permanent basis. The library is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays, and the second Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, call 302-658-2400 or visit www.hagley.org.
