Delaware Symphony Orchestra announces major international recording project It will feature Brasil guitar duo in U.S. premiere of concerto by Cuban icon Leo Brouwer, and concertos by Brazilians Paulo Bellinati and Egberto Gismonti The Delaware Symphony Orchestra (DSO) has launched a major international recording project that will feature Brasil Guitar Duo – exceptional Brazilian guitarists João Luiz and Douglas Lora – performing three concerti for two guitars and orchestra, including the U.S. premiere of The Book of Signs by Cuban composer and cultural icon Leo Brouwer, plus concerti by noted contemporary Brazilian composers Paulo Bellinati and Egberto Gismonti. The recording will be made during two concerts with the Delaware Symphony Orchestra on Feb. 26 and 28. It will be produced and distributed internationally by Naxos, the world’s leading classical music label, known for recording exciting new repertoire with exceptional talent. Music Director David Amado will conduct the DSO and Brasil Guitar Duo in the concerts, titled “Fantastic Guitars” on Friday, Feb. 26, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 28, at 2:00 p.m., at the Geipel Center at Sanford School in Hockessin, Del. Following the guitar concerti, the second half of the concert will be devoted to the monumental Symphonie fantastique of Hector Berlioz. Maestro Amado said of the recording, “The opportunity to work with such fine musicians documenting such interesting, beautiful, and important repertoire is a rare privilege. I look forward to the process, to the music-making, and of course, to the successful release of this wonderful album.” Amado described this effort as a “confluence of cultures” and added, “Leo Brouwer’s permission for the U. S. premiere performance and recording of his The Book of Signs for two guitars and string orchestra ignited this powerful collaboration, and we are thrilled to be a part of it, especially at this unprecedented period of thaw between the U.S. and Cuba. As diplomats smooth the political creases, artists can smooth the cultural ones.” In spite of its political isolation, Cuba has been an artistic powerhouse, and Leo Brouwer has been a primary source of that energy. His work as a guitarist and a composer has been celebrated around the world. Amado added, “This is a rare

opportunity to document the work of one of the guitar world’s most important voices in a once-in-alifetime political climate.” DSO Executive Director Alan Jordan added, “For the second time in a decade, the DSO will record works for multiple guitars and orchestra for a commercial CD. The last effort, in 2010, garnered the DSO a Latin Grammy nomination. This time, we are working with Naxos, the world’s largest producer of classical CDs, and we look forward to sharing this recording with our patrons, friends, and families. Jordan added, “Funding for an international project of this magnitude is vitally important. We are pleased that in the ‘quiet phase’ of our fundraising, much of the cost of the project has already been underwritten by generous individuals, corporations, and foundation sponsors. We hope our friends will help us with this historic project in its final phase, by participating in our Kickstarter campaign.” The DSO is asking the public’s help in the final push to fund the recording. To see a video of Brasil Guitar Duo playing in 2015 with a string quartet from the DSO, and to learn more details about the project and how to participate in the Kickstarter campaign, visit the DSO website at www.delawaresymphony. org and follow the link on the home page. Tickets for the live concerts that will be recorded are $60 each (plus a $6 box office handling fee per ticket). All seats are general admission. Tickets may be ordered from The Grand Opera House Box Office at 302-652-5577, in person at 818 North Market Street in downtown Wilmington, or online at www. ticketsatthegrand.org. Lenape Builders, Inc: 37 years of building quality homes The Lenape (pronounced Len-apE) organization formed in 1978 and was named for a region of Chester County, Pa. in which the original partners were looking to invest and develop. Though the project never evolved the name remained and the company went on to become what is today, Lenape Builders Incorporated. Having built thousands of homes over the past 35 years, Lenape Builders Inc. has built a diverse portfolio of quality new homes throughout Delaware, southeastern

The Harvest Market kitchen serves real food to go Harvest Market, northern Delaware’s premier ier natural foods grocer, just finished celebrating its twentieth birthday. It was just three years ago, however, that the independentlyowned market opened its own on-site kitchen, which offers a large selection of “grab and go” main dishes, soups, salads, sandwiches and wraps, sides, and desserts. According to kitchen manager Megan Bushnell, everything produced is made from scratch in the kitchen from the same high quality ingredients that are sold on the shelves of Harvest Market. “We have very high ingredient standards,” said Bushnell, noting that more than 95 percent of

the fresh produce used to prepare the wide array th of offerings is certified organically grown. Additional quality ingredients include Bell and Evans natural chicken and locally raised, grass-fed beef. From vegetarian favorites like Beet Root Hummus and Wild Harvest Rice Salad, to more Paleo-friendly offerings like Almond Coconut Bars and Curried Chicken Salad, Harvest Market is the place to go in Hockessin for food that is nourishing, sustainable and delicious. For an idea of the variety of graband-go items offered, visit www. HarvestMarketNaturalFoods.com and click on the kitchen tab.

Hamlet: Anatomy of a 150-year overnight sensation! The year was 1865 when 25-year-old Franco Faccio unveiled Amleto, based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet, with libretto by his close friend, Arrigo Boito. The premiere in Genova was so successful that friends urged a revival, which finally came in 1871 at La Scala (the year Wilmington’s Grand Opera House was built!). But triumph was doomed by a star tenor who wouldn’t admit he was too ill to perform and embarrassed the performance. Faccio, once burned, turned his genius into a career as a major conductor. Boito went on to write many famous libretti, including Verdi’s Otello and Falstaff. Amleto was forgotten, lost, buried. In 2001, composer/conductor Anthony Barrese was determined to find its faint, unreadable manuscript – and recreate it note-by-note into a full-blown opera production in 2014 that had critics raving: “A fantastic night...” “truly thrilling... “...the standing ovations went on and on.” Amleto will be staged by OperaDelaware, starring Joshua Kohl as Amleto, Sarah Asmar as Ofelia, Tim Mix as Claudius, and Lara Tillotson as Geltrude. Maestro Anthony Barrese conducts and E. Loren Meeker directs. For tickets, visit www.operade.org or call 302-442-7807. Performance dates at the Grand are: May 14, 8 p.m.; May 20, 7:30 p.m.; May 22, 2 p.m.

Joshua Kohl stars in Amleto, staged by OperaDelaware at the Grand Opera House on May 14, 20 and 22.

Falstaff, Verdi’s second comedy, written as he was approaching 80 years old, premiered in 1893 at La Scala. How is it that this masterpiece has never been performed in The Grand? Perhaps because as delightful and fun as it is, it is fiendishly complex and difficult to perform. Another masterful collaboration between librettist Arrigo Boito and Verdi, the production uses material from Shakespeare’s Merry Wives of Windsor and Henry IV to create one of the greatest comic operas in history. The production stars Steven Condy as Sir John Falstaff, Sean Anderson as Ford, Victoria Cannizzo as Alice Ford, Sharin Apostolou as Nanetta and Ryan MacPherson as Fenton. Maestro Giovanni Reggioli conducts and Dean Anthony directs. For tickets, visit www.operade.org or call 302-442-7807. Performance dates at the Grand are: May 15, 2 p.m.; May 21, 7:30 p.m.

Main Street Movies 5 to Open in 2016 at Newark Shopping Center Main Street Movies 5 will open a five-screen, state-of-the-art movie theater with reserved, reclining seats and refreshments from local vendors at the Newark (DE) Shopping Center in August of 2016. The new theater will replace the shuttered Newark Cinema Center, which operated from the early 1960’s through October of 2015. Main Street Movies 5 has signed an 18,000 square foot lease with Atlantic Realty Companies of Tysons, VA, which acquired the Newark Shopping Center four years ago in partnership with New York City-based Angelo, Gordon & Co. Main Street will invest $3 million in a full-scale renovation of the old theater including expansion into adjacent space. The work is scheduled to begin in February 2016, without affecting operation of the rest of the shopping center. In addition to offering roomy recliner seats and reserved seating, the new theater will offer a full bar, a 50-foot screen, self-serve ticketing, and a wide variety of grab-andgo concession offerings. “We believe in being part of the community,” said Rick Roman, Principal of Main Street Movies 5. “In addition to the typical movie theater fare, we plan to sell locally made refreshments including pizza, cookies, and ice cream.” While the former outdated theater had three screens, the new theater will have five screens. “With cozy recliner seating, the new theater will have fewer seats than the old one so there will be plenty of parking,” Roman noted. “Main Street Movies 5 will be a 21st century theater with the latest in technology to create a great experience for movie-goers.” “We are excited to bring a new, modern movie theater to Newark Shopping Center, the second oldest shopping center in Delaware,” said Atlantic Realty President David Ross. “Along with our partners at Angelo, Gordon, we are happy to be able to maintain this amenity for the City of Newark. Having a theater operated by professionals who are community-oriented will go a long way toward ensuring a successful operation.” In late 2015, Atlantic Realty completed a $10 million renovation of the 61-year-old Newark Shopping Center to serve the needs of customers flocking to Newark’s vibrant Main Street corridor and the nearby University of Delaware campus. A grand opening celebration was held on September 12, 2015. The center is now home to Newark Natural Foods, PNC Bank, Rita’s Italian Ice, Dollar Tree, Mediterranean Grill, Zahra International Foods, Mayflower Japanese Restaurant, Churrascaria Saudades Brazilian Steakhouse, Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop, Sports Clips, Big Z Pizza, and other retailers. Welcoming these new shops and restaurants are two tenants of long standing: Hair Design by Anthony and the only remaining original tenant from 1955, Minster’s Jewelers. Newark Shopping Center was developed originally by Pomeroy Realty, Inc. at a cost of $1 million – an eye-popping figure at the time. Fourteen of the center’s 16 acres were devoted to parking, accommodating Americans’ postwar love affair with the automobile. The original tenant roster included Acme Super Market, Newark Department Store, F.W. Woolworth, Sun-Ray Drug Store, Miles Shoes, Liedemann’s Bakery, and J. J. Minster and Son. Founded in 1992, Atlantic Realty Companies is a full-service real estate firm that owns, manages, and/or has developed an award-winning portfolio comprising four million square feet of office and retail space located in Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware. Atlantic Realty succeeds in a wide spectrum of real estate projects, applying in-house capabilities that integrate acquisition, development, land use, leasing, construction, and property management. For more information, visit www.arcrealty. com or call 703-760-9500. Angelo, Gordon & Co. is a privately-held registered investment advisor dedicated to alternative investing. The firm was founded in 1988 and currently manages assets totaling approximately $27 billion. Over the past 20 years, Angelo, Gordon has acquired over $19 billion of real estate assets globally in over 400 transactions, representing over $8 billion of equity, in a series of opportunistic and core plus real estate funds.

Five Signs Your Child Needs Tutoring It’s easy to tell that a child needs tutoring when he or she continues to receive one poor report card after the next, but there are a number of other less obvious signs that parents shouldn’t ignore. Eileen Huntington of Huntington Learning Center says that parents can look for clues in a number of places. “Stressful study sessions and bad grades are the tangible evidence of a child’s school struggles, but there are several other indicators to watch for,” says Huntington. “The sooner you recognize school problems, the faster you can help your child overcome any issues and boost his or her confidence.” Huntington shares these five warning signs that your child may need tutoring help—and questions to answer about your child’s behavior: Difficulty getting started: Does your child seem unexcited and unmotivated about anything to do with school—especially working on assignments? Does he or she put off homework time every night and frequently spin his or her wheels when working? Sloppy homework and overall disorganization: Is your child disorganized in most areas of his or her life? Does your child consistently hand in unfinished or messy homework? Does it seem that your child used to care about doing quality work and does not anymore? Personality change: Have you noticed a dramatic change in your child’s disposition in recent months? Is your child more angry or volatile than ever before? Does he or she seem unhappy—about school and other areas of his or her life such as friends? Diminished self-esteem: Does your child get down on him or herself easily during homework? Is your child pessimistic about school, his or her abilities, and more? On a day to day basis, does your child appear frustrated with him or herself?

Lack of interest in learning: Is your child totally apathetic about school and anything associated with school? Was your child interested in learning previously and now is not? Does that indifference translate to other areas, such as socializing or being involved in extracurricular activities? “School can be a bumpy road for students who are struggling, so it is important to take action if you notice your child showing any of these signs,” Huntington says. “Experience has showed us that early tutoring intervention is key to getting students back to where they need to be as quickly as possible.”

Ivy Gables: North Wilmington’s newest Assisted Living Community

Courtesy photos (5)

Nestled on five wooded acres in historic Ardentown, Del., Ivy Gables is North Wilmington’s newest assisted living community. Owners George and Tammy Loudon have 10 years of experience in assisted living ownership, along with a keen eye for elegant living and excellence in care and customer service, and have taken what was once a YWCA, and turned it into this hidden gem. From the moment people walk into the lobby, everyone comments what a warm and welcoming environment the community has. Ivy Gables has 24 studio apartments, as well as some one-bedroom options. There are multiple simple, yet elegant and intimate public areas, as well as a beautiful dining room and Great Room,

both complete with gas fireplaces for an additional warm and homelike atmosphere. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, residents of Ivy Gables are escorted to appointments in style in a London cab. Ivy Gables allows its residents the stress-free environment of both independent and assisted living by offering three restaurant-style meals a day, dedicated arts and entertainment, weekly housecleaning services, weekly linen exchange, daily towel service, and as little or as much hands-on care needed by its trained staff of compassionate caregivers. Happy hour happens weekly with live entertainment, and across the parking lot, residents are entitled to complimentary shows by the Candlelight Dinner Theatre.

We asked the family of our first resident what their experience has been: “After four months of managing in-home care for our Mom, we decided to look at some assisted living communities in our area. Although very nice, the ones we visited seemed a little overwhelming to Mom. A friend told us about a newly renovated community in Arden that had just re-opened. We decided to check it out. Thus began our love affair with Ivy Gables, a beautifully appointed 24-room senior living community nestled in the community of Ardentown, which just happens to be five minutes from our home. We particularly liked that it was a small community, knowing that it would be more comforting to Mom.

“Of course, what’s a beautiful community without warm and friendly people to bring it to life? The staff at Ivy Gables outshines all of its beautiful appointments! They are top-notch, professional folks who welcomed us and have gone the extra mile to make our Mom (and us) feel at home! Knowing that our Mom is safe and in the hands of such kind and loving folks, has given us such peace of mind!” – Sharon T. Clearly, Ivy Gables has much to offer its residents and their families! If you’d like to speak with someone directly, or schedule a personal tour and lunch, please call Director of Community Relations, Laurie Seidle at 302-475-9400, or email lseidle@ IvyGablesSeniorLiving.com.

Delaware young playwrights finalists announced Six playwrights chosen from over 97 student entries

Delaware Theatre Company recently announced the six finalist plays in the 2015-2016 Delaware Young Playwrights Festival:

• “All for Her” by Grady McPeak, Charter School of Wilmington • “The Judge Outside the Courtroom” by Dana Hoffman, Cab Calloway School of the Arts • “Reset” by Jai Latham Gallagher, William Penn High School • “Scholar’s Mate” by Anastasia Hutnick, Padua Academy • “There is Someone at the Window” by Billie Rose Newby, Newby Family Home School #8266 • “Writer’s Block” by Annie Cahill, Aquinas Academy The six playwrights of these plays were selected as finalists in the 2015-2016 Delaware Young Playwrights Festival (DYPF). The finalists will participate in a series of playwriting workshops with

professional theatre artists from Delaware Theatre Company to further refine their writing and ready their works for a public showcase performance on April 7, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. on the DTC stage. This year’s DYPF began in September with a kickoff workshop for Delaware teachers and students in grades 8-12. From there, 68 plays written by 97 students representing thirteen different Delaware high schools throughout the state were submitted for the first round. Each playwright received personal feedback about his or her play from a teaching artist of the Delaware Theatre Company staff. Student playwrights had the opportunity to revise their plays. Participating schools were then invited to resubmit their top five plays for the second round, also known as the “competition round.” From these entries, the six finalist plays were selected for additional development under the guidance of Delaware Theatre Company’s team of theatre artists and educators.

Though not selected as finalists, four other plays and their playwrights are recognized with an honorable mention for the merits of their work. These plays are Too Far Gone by Anthony Mazewski and Connor Davis (St. Elizabeth High School), That Voice of Reason by Samantha Stewart (William Penn High School), Choices by Timothy Bradford and Megan Allen (Cab Calloway School of the Arts), and The Word by Jackie Garyantes and Carlie Hackman (St. Elizabeth High School). DTC congratulates these playwrights and invites them, along with all of this year’s playwrights, to the awards recognition night and showcase of finalist plays on April 7. Now in its fifth year of the relaunch of this acclaimed program, DYPF invites high school students to write a play based on a theme inspired by one of Delaware Theatre Company’s productions. This year’s theme was inspired by a quotation from The Explorers Club, written by Nell

Benjamin, which will be produced and presented by DTC in April and May of 2016. The quotation served as a metaphor for the DYPF theme: “Write a play in which a character who on the surface seems ordinary or even limited in ability demonstrates a unique or surprising talent, capability, or strength.” Through the use of a standards-based writing rubric, students created and shaped their original plays with regard to characters, conflict, dialogue, theme, and other dramatic criteria. Delaware Theatre Company celebrates the work of all 97 students in adding 68 new plays to the world of theatre through their participation in the 2015-2016 Delaware Young Playwrights Festival. The Delaware Young Playwrights Festival is made possible, in part, by support from the Delaware Division of the Arts, The Shubert Foundation, Nordstrom, the Laffey-McHugh Foundation, and Wilmington University.
