Wilmington Montessori School: Honoring the past and preparing for the future By Noel Sarah Dietrich Director of Communications
Since its inception in 1964, Wilmington Montessori School (WMS) has remained committed to Dr. Maria Montessori’s evidence-based educational methods developed more than a century ago. Today those same core principles – engaging children in an environment of discovery, critical thinking and problem-solving to create passionate learners – continue to drive the school. “The rest of the educational community is now catching up with what Montessorians have known for years,” said Head of School Lisa Lalama. “The Montessori Method of self-discovery and integration is a proven strategy to provide students with a strong foundation to successfully navigate a rapidly-changing world.” As the school celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, numerous alumni visited the school, expressing their gratitude for the many ways in which a WMS education prepared them for academic success and life and reminiscing about their many unique experiences at the school. “WMS fueled me to always be curious and enjoy life’s every discovery,” said Flo Miniscloux, WMS class of 2002. “It taught me that ‘work’ is fun and creativity is never-ending. Because of WMS, I yearn to always think just a little more differently and to understand just a little more deeply.” Miniscloux’s comments exemplify the spirit and mission of WMS, a spirit that will continue forward to the next 50 years. While continuing this tradition of excellence through the tried and true Montessori Method, WMS also remains at the forefront of new educational research and is committed to preparing children with 21st-century skills. It is with this forward-thinking mentality that the following new initiatives began this year:

Technology The ultimate goal of a Wilmington Montessori School education is to prepare students for success in their next educational ventures and, ultimately, in life. While technology did not exist when Maria Montessori was creating her innovative educational method, it has become an integral part of the WMS curriculum at the elementary level. At WMS, technology is not an add-on class or a substitute for instruction from teachers and hands-on work. Instead, it is integrated into all parts of the curriculum, used for creative projects, research and discovery, communication, and more. Computer labs have become a thing of the past thanks to WMS’s enhanced wireless network, laptops in classrooms, Apple TVs and iPads. In the 9-12 (fourththrough sixth-grade) Program, each student is assigned his or her own iPad to use at home and school throughout the year. iPads are also available to younger elementary students, and each early childhood classroom teacher has one to use for communication with parents and other classroom activities. Within each classroom, teachers and students work together under the guidance of Instructional Technology Coach Rosemary Feehan to utilize the iPads in ways that best fit their teaching and learning styles. “We have designed an iPad program that allows us to cater to the needs of individual students rather than an entire grade or even an entire class,” Feehan said. “Students
are able to request apps that will help them achieve their individual learning goals. While one student might want a way to improve in math, another may benefit from spelling apps. Maker (STEAM) Studios In today’s job market, positions for graduates with a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) background abound. The integration of these five areas of the curriculum aligns with the Montessori approach, and at Wilmington Montessori School, STEAM education starts at the young age of 12 months. Under the leadership of STEAM Coach Paula Sharpe, WMS has opened three Maker Studios (for toddler, preschool and elementary-aged students) in which WMS students use age-appropriate materials discover, build, investigate, create, design and learn in a safe environment. Natural toddler playground/outdoor classroom WMS’s 25-acre campus provides a safe space for children of all ages to learn and play. This year, the school’s Toddler play area has been transformed into a wonderland for the school’s youngest students – one of Delaware’s first “natural” playgrounds. WMS staff collaborated with a design/ educator team to create an outdoor space that makes use of natural elements and is in keeping with the Montessori Method’s focus on self-directed exploration and
play, and the importance of connecting with the natural world. The work was executed by local landscape designer Bill Duncan of White Oak Landscaping (known for his work on the DuPont Environmental Education Center on Wilmington’s Riverfront), who contributed many of his own ideas to the creation of this unique and innovative “outdoor classroom.” The playground features slides embedded into hillsides, a stone table for creating chalk art, water features for splashing, tunnels for crawling, a paved roadway for “driving” and a “hobbit house” built into a hillside. Toddlers enrolled in WMS’s new 12-month program will have extra opportunities to enjoy this outdoor classroom throughout the summer. *** This list only begins to describe all of the innovative things happening at Wilmington Montessori School each day, and there is more to come. Schedule a visit to see for yourself and find out how WMS is turning today’s learners into tomorrow’s leaders. GSEP campers choose from dozens of themed day, overnight and specialty camping opportunities at three resident and three day camps. Whether you’re an athlete, chef, artist, horse lover, or traveler – there’s something to wow every girl. This summer, new programs and amenities are available at all of GSEP camps, including new travel programs, high and low ropes courses, dueling zip lines, and more opportunities to earn Girl Scout badges. Both day and overnight campers will get the full camp experience – participating in activities ranging from campfires, hiking, cookouts and swimming to horseback riding, stand up paddleboards, archery, pottery, leadership training and outdoor education. GSEP camps are affordable and camperships are available so that all girls have access to the benefits of camp. For parents seeking full-day childcare, bus transportation and extended days are offered at some GSEP camps. Innovative programming creates a high-quality experience at Wilmington Friends Summer Camp
Wilmington Friends Summer Camp provides a wealth of high quality programming for our campers, a tradition since 1996. We pride ourselves on developing innovative programming year after year and believe the expansion of our Sports and Technology camps in 2015 illustrates our commitment. This expansion promotes our efforts to ensure Friends campers feel successful and included. Technology camps have always been a hallmark of our program. Across our lower school and middle school campuses we provide campers with tools and opportunities to tap into their innovative side by offering Scratch animation, Lego and film. To build upon this already impressive resume, we are excited to partner with Youth Digital this summer and offer even more exciting programs including App and Mod Design camps. These camps will be perfect for young "Minecrafters" and
computer geniuses looking to create the next popular app. Sports camps have always been very popular at Friends. Spiking volleyballs and learning proper lacrosse passing techniques are just a few examples of how our programs help to develop competitive athletes while always sticking to our commitment of nurturing good sportsmanship. This year we will keep this tradition alive by offering both British and Brazilian themed soccer camps. These camps not only provide an authentic soccer experience, but also give families a chance to host our international coaching staff during their stay in Wilmington. What a great way to learn the world's most popular sport while also providing our camper's families with an enriching, cultural experience. Prepare for success!
SAT and ACT Test Preparation Courtesy photo
Preparing for changes to the SAT The SAT is changing. Yes, that venerable rite of passage for college-bound highschool students will soon have a new look and feel. But relax – the changes will make the test more student-friendly in a number of ways. First of all, these changes do not happen until the spring of 2016, so if you are a high-school senior or junior, they won’t affect you at all. For better or worse, you’ll take the good old SAT – math, reading, and writing, each section scored from 200 to 800, for a possible total of 2400 points. For the rest of us, here is what you need to know. First, the form of the test will be different. The new SAT will consist of math and reading sections only, scored from 200 to 800 points. An essay section will be optional, and will receive separate scores, from 2 to 8 on three different features of the essay. Moreover, multiple-choice questions will consist of four answer choices instead of five, and the much despised “guessing penalty” for wrong answers is eliminated. On the new SAT, you should never leave a question blank. But perhaps most significantly, the content of the new SAT will differ in
important ways from the old SAT. Math questions on the new SAT will look more like the kinds of questions you see in your classes. And many problems will be drawn from real-world contexts, such as the sciences. Similarly, reading questions will concern passages drawn from sources relevant to your broader classroom experience, including important historic texts. Passage information will also include charts and other diagrams which you will be required to understand and relate to their associated passages. Questions will place additional emphasis on identifying and providing evidence for claims, and less emphasis on vocabulary. The upshot – the new SAT will feel more familiar and less tricky than the current test. If you do well on your coursework in high school, chances are that, with good preparation, you’ll reach your testing goals on the new SAT. The University of Delaware, in partnership with Educational Testing Consultants, will offer four-day test preparation classes for the SAT and ACT this July on campus in Newark. The benefits of day camp Summertime, summertime, summertime!
Courtesy photos (3)
The weather is nice, school is out, and the pools are open. These are the times when memories are made, and for a child with a lot of interests, parents want to provide chances to try several different things. Then there’s the child who is only interested in one thing. Maybe it’s science projects, maybe it’s a sport, maybe it’s cooking -- what to do then? The options can be overwhelming. And that doesn’t even count the coordination and carpooling that can make a grown-up feel like throwing a tantrum! If this sounds like you, the good news is that there is a perfect solution: A comprehensive day camp with built-in specialty weeks and lots of components you can tailor to meet your child’s needs. A day camp experience is more than just a way to keep your child busy during the day. It is more than just a way for them to learn a new skill, improve in a sport, or pursue a passion.. They will be challenged to expand their comfort zone. They will be nurtured and cared for as a complete individual. Most importantly, they will have an opportunity to make new friends and make memories that will last a lifetime. This is especially true if you come to Camp JCC. We are guided by the values of our tradition, including kindness, learning and caring for others, while celebrating the diversity of the larger community. We make sure that every camper is exercising their body, their mind and their heart. We are committed to their growth and their well-being. We all look forward to summer. We look forward to shedding our coats and taking a break from the daily grind. We look forward to our vacations. This summer, let us also look forward to our children continuing to grow into the adults we want them to be in a fun, safe and positive environment – at Camp JCC.

Wilmington Ballet Dance Camp benefits body and mind for boys and girls
Whether your child enjoys twirling and leaping around the house, or prefers soccer or Minecraft, ballet can be a great activity to enrich his or her emotional and physical well-being. Ballet is a physically intense activity that can improve muscular strength, flexibility and range of motion. Ballet training can also boost coordination and balance, according to the Joffrey Academy of Dance in Chicago, for greater body control. In addition to its physical benefits, classical ballet can promote both academic success and emotional well-being. Learning and memorizing the positions, combinations and terminology presented in ballet class, while timing movements to music, can increase mental focus and discipline and can stimulate intellectual development. Furthermore, according to Brighton Ballet Theatre, training in classical ballet instills a sense of pride and accomplishment that can boost self-esteem and spill over into other areas of a child’s life. The Wilmington Ballet Academy of the Dance has been perfecting the craft of
instruction in classical ballet for the young and old for the past 59 years. Our studio has also performed “The Nutcracker” at the DuPont Theatre, now the Playhouse on Market, for the past 47 years. Our young dancers are able to perform on the same stage with professional dancers with music from a live orchestra. Many previous students have gone on to careers in dance or theatre and even more have credited their dance instruction and performance experience with giving them valuable life skills. A great way to sample our ballet program and our newly added contemporary dance is through our Summer Dance Camp Program at our studio, conveniently located on 1709 Gilpin in the Trolley Square neighborhood of Wilmington, Del. Preschoolers ages 3 to 6 have two oneweek sessions to choose from: June 22-26 or July 13-17 from 9 a.m. to noon with snack provided. Our little ones will experience a delightful combination of early dance technique and creative movement, along with singing and character play. Older dancers ages 6 to 18 can take

one or both of our two-week intensive sessions June 15 – 26 or July 6 – 17. In addition to ballet technique, students will participate in workshops that include contemporary, jazz and choreographed dance, with the opportunity to perform in our Ballet in the Park series at the end of
each session. Hours and pricing vary by level based on previous dance experience. More information and online registration can be found on our website: www. wilmingtonballet.org/summer. Questions? Call or email 302-655-1004 or info@ wilmingtonballet.org.

Montessori . . . the key to learning
What is Montessori? So many say, “I have heard about Montessori, but really don’t know what it is?” The Hockessin Montessori School offers this hands-on, practical approach to teaching children. There are various fundamentals which are essential to the Montessori environment. Students are separated into multi-age groupings rather than the traditional one-grade rooms. Children learn by being involved in their own learning process, therefore the classroom is not a traditional set up of desks, but the environment provides for movement, choice, and exploration. Children learn at different rates, from different approaches, and through different strengths, therefore presentation of work is individualized by the teacher. Children are not simply taught information or asked to memorize, but rather they are taught how to learn and realistically prepare themselves to be adults. This method of teaching originated over 100 years ago by Dr. Maria Montessori, and is even more relevant today. The Hockessin Montessori School Toddler program is education-based
rather than simply a child care program. The environment provides opportunities for learning cause and effect relationships about the real world through exploration and experimentation. Toddlers learn to work together in a nurturing environment that encourages independence, and in an environment that respects the toddler’s curiosity. Moving onto the pre-school program, the classroom is prepared for the children to encourage the child’s inner curiosity. Children work within these multi-aged classrooms, receiving both individual and small group lessons designed to meet the individual needs of each child. Young children learn from older ones and older children reinforce their own knowledge by working with young children. Attention is paid not only to the children’s academic ability, but also to their social, emotional, and physical development. Elementary students at The Hockessin Montessori School are encouraged to be independent thinkers and develop good problem-solving skills. Teachers endeavor to truly educate, by drawing out the discovery of concepts and information

from the child. The emphasis is placed on the process of learning, rather than the product. The program integrates the curriculum, as well as the state standards and focuses on community service and empowering students to make a difference. Middle School is an integration of the current research in human development, the trends and issues in education, and the Montessori philosophy. The students spend their time learning key elements of life, such as gaining self-confidence and self-knowledge, learning how to belong to a community, becoming academically
competent and challenged, and creating a vision for their personal future; thus, empowering the early adolescent. With each program level, toddler through middle school there is a strong focus on academic achievement. Toddler and pre-school students utilize manipulative materials and experience individualized lessons to lay the foundation for the abstract learning that occurs in elementary and middle school. To experience Montessori firsthand, come by for the open house on any Thursday at 9 a.m. Register online at www.thehms.org.

Why Mid-Atlantic Ballet? Mid-Atlantic Ballet has a 16-year tradition of classical ballet instruction that focuses on ballet as the foundation for all styles of dance. Artistic director Patrick Korstange and his staff are all highly trained and active dancers in the community. The instructors promote dancers upon their demonstrated ability and maturity level. Instead of recitals, we give our dancers the opportunity of performing in full-length ballets. We perform two in-studio and two full-length ballet performances at Mitchell Hall on the University of Delaware campus. Our ballets feature original choreography by our Artistic Director and his staff. Once dancers are promoted to the trainee program they are eligible for all MAB performances. All levels of the ballet are able to participate in our ‘Inside the Dancers’ Studio’ in May.
A key advantage of MAB for our parents is the low cost of supplying their child with the basics needed for dance class. Parents only need to buy, tights, leotard and ballet shoes for their children. We offer these items for sale new or gently used in our studio. MAB provides, with the help of our talented w a r d r o b e department, the costuming required for performances. MAB is fortunate to have a state-of-the-art dance studio. Our location on Main Street is accessible with ample city parking. There are many restaurants and shops within walking distance for parents to visit
while their dancer is in class or rehearsal. The building is accessible to the disabled and offers close, secure parking. MAB’s 5,000-square-foot facility features two spacious, air-conditioned studios with sprung floors. The larger studio is equipped with lighting and space for seating to create an intimate in-house performance venue. Our dancers form a tight community of friends. Together at every level, they develop skills, grow in ability and prepare to perform. MAB encourages our students to respect each other’s abilities and talents and build each other’s confidence to perform in front
of the public. We also have very active family and member participation in all of our programs, our performances and operations. Outside of our studio, Mid-Atlantic ballet performs at outreach events for local schools and hospitals. We bring the artistry of ballet and the message of fitness through dance, to the greater Newark community. This spring, join us for an event that will leave you "happily ever after" as Mid-Atlantic Ballet presents "Cinderella." This classic tale will delight the entire family as Cinderella, with the help of some animal friends and her fairy Godmother, goes to the ball and meets the handsome prince, changing her life forever. "Cinderella" performances take place at Mitchell Hall on April 25 at 4 and 7:30 p.m.
