Our 25th Year of Summer Camps - teaching over 2500 Kids
For the past 26 years the Wilmington Youth Rowing Assn – WYRA – has taught more than 2,000 kids from Delaware, Southeastern Pennsylvania, Maryland and Southern New Jersey to ROW and RACE at the WYRA Boathouse on the Christina River. Rowing is a healthy sport that raises self-esteem and teaches responsibility, self-discipline, sportsmanship, focus and above all, teamwork. There are no “benchwarmers in WYRA camps and competitive crew; everyone rows and races. We are proud of our WYRA graduates who have rowed for more than 80 colleges and universities. ROW FOR IT! Summer camp, now in its 24th year, is for ages 10-14. Campers choose either
morning camp from 10-12 noon or afternoon camp from 1-3pm. Rowers are taught the basics of rowing and racing during the three week camp in 60’ racing shells with 12’ oars accompanied at all times by coaches in launches. The only pre-requisite for all of WYRA’s programs is that rowers pass a basic swimming test. At the conclusion of the 3 week camp a cook-out and races are held for all rowers and their families. Rowing 101 is a one week camp, 9-3pm each day, for teens 13-19 who think they might want to row competitively at WYRA or want to try rowing in college. Competitive crew, an after school sport for teens in 8th through 12th grade, begins the day after Labor Day each year. There are three seasons – Fall, Winter, Spring. Rowers can row in all three seasons or choose to row and race in just one season, though most rowers fall in love with rowing and stay with crew throughout their high VFKRRO \HDUV 1RYLFH URZHUV ¿UVW \HDU LQ FRPSHWitive crew) practice Tuesday-Friday, 3:30-6pm and Saturday morning from 8:30-11am. Learning is fun at the Delaware Museum of Natural History The Delaware Museum of Natural History is excited to host another year of spring break and summer camps, featuring a variety of camp topics for a range of ages, from toddlers through middle school, and a new camp for seventh to ninth graders. Scout and Camp Coordinator Cathy Perrotto’s goal is to create an environment where learning is fun for the campers. A key component is hiring counselors who are just as enthusiastic as the kids. DMNH camps also stress the importance of being outdoors, with great spaces for campers to explore such as the campfire and picnic area as well as the hiking and nature trails. Inside the Museum, campers explore the galleries, and there are dedicated areas for camp activities. In addition to themed activities, camps include activities relating to the current special exhibit. “We take what’s in the exhibits and incorporate it into our camps to give the kids an extension of what they learned,” Perrotto says. Spring Break campers explore Design Zone and conduct experiments inspired by the exhibit. During the summer, two camps are inspired by the upcoming special exhibit Wicked Plants. Petals, and Nettles, and Thorns, Oh My! explores the world of plants and how plants evolved to create their own defenses. Protectors of the Planet explores the science of how plants protect themselves and how humans can help. Another new camp, Animals Up Close, is designed for campers who have completed seventh to ninth grade. In this interactive camp, campers will explore the world of caring for animals. Campers work with live animals from the Museum as well as with birds from partner organization, Animal Behavior & Conservation Connections. “A major part of the camp involves observing a bird’s natural behaviors,” says Perrotto. “With the information we gather, campers will create an educational program involving the birds.” Learn more about Summer Camp at delmnh.org/camps

Newfound freedom, thanks to Easterseals Camp Fairlee By Natalie Scott When Maria is on the water in one of the new adapted kayaks at Easterseals Camp Fairlee, she feels free. It is not often that Maria, who has cerebral palsy, is able to “call the shots” on her own. Camp Fairlee provides that sense of freedom while providing a nurturing and safe environment for all. “I am happy, I liked it. It’s independent. I could paddle it myself with the counselors nearby but not in the kayak,” Maria says of the experience of kayaking. Camp Fairlee’s summer sessions are available for both children and adults of varying disabilities, including specialized sessions for those with autism. The summer sessions include some of Maria’s favorite activities: kayaking, canoeing, zip lining, swimming, campfires, dancing, talent show and so much more. While your loved one is having the time of their life at camp, you are able to take a break or go on a trip without worrying about them. “Camp has been a godsend to Maria and to us. It gives us a break. We do what we want to do without worrying about Maria being safe,” Maria’s dad, Greg, says. “We get to be empty nesters for a week.” If you are a caregiver who needs a break from the constant demand of caregiving turn to Easterseal’s Camp Fairlee. Camp Fairlee outside of Chestertown, Maryland, is one of the only facilities in the region that provides a typical residential camp experience for children and adults with disabilities year-round. Give your loved one an unforgettable experience by taking advantage of Camp Fairlee’s week-long-summer-camp experiences, themed respites weekends from September through May, and the Fairlee Vacations program with travel and cruises to popular resorts. Learn more about Camp Fairlee at www.de.easterseals.com/fairlee or by calling 410-778-0566.

YMCA CAMP TOCKWOGH – DISCOVER SUMMER Camp Tockwogh, a branch of the YMCA of Delaware, is a spectacular camp on the Eastern Shore of Maryland overlooking 309 well-preserved acres spanning 2 miles of Chesapeake Bay shoreline. Tockwogh is a traditional overnight summer camp guided by the principles of the YMCA and serves youth from kindergarten through eleventh grade. Tockwogh is the place where kids learn to sail and ski. For more than 80 years, we have been the leader in providing summer watersports programs to kids from the MidAtlantic area. Campers also enjoy building their own activity schedule from our athletics, fine arts, outdoor exploration, equestrian and climbing programs. Camper safety and well-being is as important to us as it is to parents at home. Kids enjoy our great family-style meals in the dining hall and we have specialty chefs who work with children with dietary needs. We also have a registered nurse on site 24 hours-a-day, who works alongside our Wellness Center Staff to keep everyone healthy. Family traditions are also made at Tockwogh at our Summer’s End Family Camp. Each family gets their own cabin and can experience all of the great activities that we offer. Families can choose to come for the entire week, or just a few days: it’s the perfect end of summer family getaway. Come visit camp before you arrive this summer! We encourage first-time campers to meet our camp directors at any of our tour days this spring. Starting at 1:30pm with a
quick presentation, followed by a tour of camp, families are invited to join us on March 17, April 28 or May 19. For more info or for registration information, please visit www.ymcacamptockwogh.org or call our office 410-348-6000.
