James E. Turner SCCCC Chairman of the Board Chester Water Authority E. Turner SCCCC Chairman of the Board (Chester Water Authority)Randall Stone “Randy” Lieberman, 62, the long-time publisher of the Chester County Press and several regional magazines – and a long-time influential member of the Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce -passed away on Dec. 26.
For the past four decades, Randy was the architect of the Chester County Press, where under his vision and leadership, the newspaper has increased circulation, expanded its editorial content and broadened its online readership, and continues to provide thousands of area residents with often exclusive reporting on local politics, schools and school districts, arts and entertainment, business and commerce and profiles of local leaders and stakeholders. Through his leadership, the company produces twicea-year editions of several magazines that are circulated
throughout Chester County, Delaware and Maryland; as well as partners with several business chamber groups – including the Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce -- in creating their publications.
Lieberman’s decades-long service to the Southern Chester County community saw him shine in several initiatives. Together with his friends in the mushroom industry, Lieberman was a key member of the Mushroom Festival; as a life-long conservationist, he was a past president of the New Garden Township Open Space Review Board and he also served the Landenberg United Methodist Church in several capacities.
Dear Members and Friends,
As you may know, I like to begin my “CONNECTIONS” message with a favorite quote.
For this issue, my quote talks about friendship. For me, this quote is perfect when I think about Randy Lieberman, owner of AdPro and publisher of the Chester County Press and numerous regional magazines, including ours.
“Find a group of people who challenge and inspire you; spend a lot of time with them, and it will change your life.”
— Amy PoehlerRandy unexpectedly, and much too soon, passed away in December of last year. And so, the cover of our Spring issue is dedicated to our dear friend and longtime member, Randy Lieberman.
Friendship in simple words is a relationship you have with your chosen family. Friends are the sisters and brothers we never had; and it may be difficult to put into words how thankful you are for a friend. Such is the case with Randy and I. Although we did not socialize outside of business, we were friends,
nonetheless. Randy was an excellent listener, and he always had an encouraging and thoughtful response, keeping my best interest at heart. We would banter back and forth about the magazine – and end up talking about ten other things, including his beautiful granddaughters, wonderful family, and sometimes, fishing. I will miss our conversations for a long time to come.
Please enjoy the issue – and take a moment to remember Randy.
Thank you,

New London Electric Inc., Taylor Oil & Propane, M. Davis & Sons, Inc., Hazley Builders, and Mother Earth Organic Mushrooms are all very successful in very different business activities. What they have in common is this—family. They are all multi-generational family businesses that are thriving in Chester County. The Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce wanted to highlight a few of the multi-generational family businesses in this issue of Connections.
The county’s largest industry continues to be the mushroom industry. Families built the mushroom industry with multiple generations working to make the business a success. Mother Earth Organic Mushrooms is an example of this. The business can trace its history to a dairy farm that had one mushroom house in 1921. Through the decades, the Yeatman family grew the business and in 1989, C.P. Yeatman and Sons changed the name to Mother Earth Organic Mushrooms and became the first certified organic commercial mushroom grower in the United States. They now ship 15 million pounds of mushrooms annually up and down the eastern seaboard and west to Chicago.
The road to acclaim for New London Electric Inc. has been paved with nearly a half century of quality work, fair prices and keeping up with codes. This 47-year-old business on Route 796 in Jennersville is managed and owned by the O’Neill family: Tom, TJ and Josie. The company operates
in three divisions: commercial, residential and generators.
M. Davis & Sons, Inc. has 150 years in business and serves as one source for all industrial, construction, fabrication, and maintenance needs. The company’s history spans five generations of the Davis family. The company moved into the Kennett Square area a year and a half ago, and they now have a footprint in three states— Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland.
In September of 1951, with $800 in his pocket, Francis W. Taylor of Kennett Square went to Philadelphia and purchased a 1946 International truck. He and his son Bill painted that first truck with the Taylor name, and thus was born Taylor Oil and Propane. More than 70 years later, the company is still going strong, and many members of the Taylor family help to make it a success.
Like some of the aforementioned businesses, Hazley Builders has evolved through the years. The company has its roots in Chester County since the 1970s, and has now grown into a design-andbuild firm that can take its customers on a full project journey, from conception to completion.
This issue of Connections also features stories about M. LaBare Certified Arborist, The Wine Stellar, and Constellation Energy Corporation—an illustration of the wide variety of businesses that are finding success in Chester County as valued members of the Southern Chester County Chamber.
Michael Hazley remembers growing up in a house of seven kids as “a blast.”
Unsurprisingly, the family’s East Bradford home was a whirlwind of activity. “There was always someone that had friends over and we were always being pulled in different directions -- in a good way,” said the president of Hazley Builders. “Whether it be soccer tournaments, practices, games or some activity.”
But he too remembers his dad – also named Michael –working hard as a contractor. The resulting Hazley Builders, which has its roots in Chester County since the 1970s, has grown into a design-and-build firm that can take its customers on a full project journey, from conception to completion.
With its complement of architects, designers, carpenters and other professionals, a Hazley Builders’ customer can be assured that they have a dedicated team working to complete the job.
Hazley said the diversification came about after realizing there was a better way. He said about eight years ago the firm realized a more traditional approach wasn’t working. “So, it kind of got us thinking a little bit outside the box,” he said.
“We were primarily an architect-driven firm before, where we would get most of our work through outside architects and go through the bidding process, but there was a disconnect there,” Hazley said “The clients would hire an architect, the architect would design something and come to us and then we would give them budgets and then the budgets wouldn’t be what the client originally wanted to spend. There was a lot of wasted time and resources on our end, but also the client’s end. We determined that we can take some of that onus off of them and say, hey, start with us. We’ll bring the design in-house and own the process from the earliest state, then we’ll be more responsible for designing something that is to their budget.”
Continued on Page 16
Continued from Page 14
He continued, “So, the client will come to us with a budget of X. We’re going to try and focus on designing to that budget instead of coming back with designs that are two or three times what their budget is.” Hazley’s approach also ensures that the project is constructed on time.
The firm provides the client with clear steps of how the project will progress, from design through the building stages. It starts with meeting the design team, then moves to project assembly, to preproduction, build and finally completion and warranty.
Hazley said he’s familiar with clients who are uncertain about which changes they want to make, just that they want it “different.”
Continued on Page 18
Continued from Page 16
“We start with asking some questions: ‘Is this a forever home? Is this a five-year home?’ We take into account their family situation. ‘Do you have young kids or are there no kids in the house?’ Really, what stage of life are they in?
“Once we kind of identify those, the finishes and the designs kind of fall into place. We’re going to be able to share with them what’s current, what the latest trends are, while also listening and learning what their tastes are. And so, a lot of this process involves listening to what the client is telling us rather than forcing our own agenda on them.”
As for design trends, Hazley shared some of the latest.
Kitchens: “Our design team is working with a lot of fun colors of cabinetry. Bright greens tend to be in right now. We’ve got some cabinet packages that we’re working on that include a high-gloss finish, which is not typical. It’s like an automotive finish, so we’re excited to see that come out.”
“Walk-in pantries are a hot detail right now. You can store all of your typical small appliances within the pantry and keep them off countertops.”
Exteriors: “We’ve seen a lot of fiber cement and Hardie board details with more lasting materials such as AZEK (synthetic) trims and Boral sidings and trim, so that it’s all maintenance-free and has a much longer lifespan.”
Home offices: “The pandemic has kind of changed this whole work-from-home environment. And so, we’re creating home offices for one or both of the adults in the home.”
But Hazley Builders’ services go beyond handling a home renovation. For those wanting to create or update a business space, the firm also has a Commercial Construction Division that brings all its design-and-build expertise to “creating customized solutions for office, retail, industrial, renovations and interior fit-outs,” according to hazleybuilders.com. Or if you dream of building a luxury custom home, garage or carriage house, Hazley Builders is on ”the cutting edge of construction and design with a portfolio of hundreds of completed projects in the West Chester area and the Main Line.” The firm’s reach extends to Delaware County, Delaware and the Jersey Shore.
Continued from Page 18
Michael isn’t the only Hazley at the firm. Brother Matt is an executive vice president and manages the Custom Homes Division. Brother Christopher is a vice president managing the Sales Division. Brother Patrick is a vice president managing the Commercial Division. Sister Erinn, with a background in real estate, is on the sales team, and brother Kevin is coordinating data management. Dad Michael retired three years ago.
And they are most definitely local. The firm’s headquarters is a mile-and-a-half away from where the family grew up.
Michael Hazley summed up Hazley Builders.
“We are a local, family-owned firm. We care deeply about our projects and the detail that goes into them.” Being a design-build firm with trained and accredited architects as part of the team enables Hazley to have architectural detail in the design phase. “We find this paramount because of the details that go into our large additions and renovations, custom homes and the smaller projects, too.”

When a little boy is born into the Taylor family, there’s a good chance his life will follow a path into the heating oil business.
It’s been that way for more than 70 years, and today members of the family still manage a company that provides a large portion of the heating oil and propane gas to residents and businesses in town.
In September 1951, with $800 in his pocket, Francis W. Taylor of Kennett Square went to Philadelphia and purchased a 1946 International truck. He and his son Bill painted that first truck with the Taylor name, and thus was born Taylor Oil and Propane.
That was the beginning.
Office manager Pat Taylor is the grandson of Frances, and he routinely handles financial matters and dispatching. He is the son Frances’s second son, Rich, and a member of the line that is still staffing the operation.
“Everybody has a part, and we all work together,” he said.
Pat’s history of the company genealogy reads like a biblical “begat” story.
Frances begat Bill and Rich (11 years later). Bill begat Jeff and Mike. Rich begat Chris and Pat. Jeff begat Jeff Jr, and Matthew. And Matthew begat Hunter.
Hunter, still in high school, is learning the family business in his time off.
“Hunter came on board and we’re into the next generation,” Pat Taylor said.
Pat said he’s been told the idea to go into business came to Frances early in his career.
“Frances was working for another company selling kerosene and asked, ‘Why am I working for them when I can sell it myself?’” Pat relayed.
Along with that decision came the purchase of the truck and a series of upgraded operating locations.
“He hid his truck at his aunt’s farm. The first office was on Meredith Street next to St. Pat’s, then Willow Street, then
Continued on Page 24
Continued from Page 23
the present location of Birch Street.”
Since those early beginnings, the company has grown to provide heating oil, propane and diesel.
Propane, as opposed to natural gas, is a by-product of the refining process, while natural gas comes straight from the ground.
“We service all of them. The company now has 22 employees and a lot of trucks. We run nine fuel vehicles and five service installation vehicles,” he said.
Pat said most of their customers purchase propane for heating, while many new homes outside the borough are being heated by electricity.
He is a proponent of heating oil, saying it is much cleaner and lighter than many people believe.
Selling oil products and servicing the equipment frequently extends beyond the usual workday, he added.
Power goes out for various reasons and people get cold. Sometimes it’s in the middle of the night. Taylor Oil is committed to helping, no matter what the time.
“Heating is a necessity. We really pride ourselves on our service,” Pat said.
He recalled that while he was young, both his father and his Uncle Bill, had phones in their homes hooked up to the office, so they could get messages 24 hours a day.
“Growing up, the phones rang all the time. We weren’t allowed to touch those phones,” he said.
Pat said as time has gone by, technology and the Internet has had an increasing role in operations. “It’s no more writing the delivery list on a piece of paper. Every truck has a tablet in it.”
He added that he is eager to find out what artificial intelligence will yield.
From the early division of labor, Rich primarily has handled the office work, and Bill has been the “face to the public.”
Bill Taylor, 86, is still the company’s president, although in recent years his role has reduced somewhat.
“He sill peeks in every day,” Pat said.
Bill is known widely in the community as the longtime head of the Memorial Day Parade. He stepped down from that post just two years ago after about 15 years of making it
grow. It turned in to a region-wide attraction under his leadership.
Talking about his years in the company, Bill said when he was young his father had him knocking on doors offering their services and selling kerosene.
“Pop knew how to get customers, and people liked him,” Bill said. “He knew how to hustle. We’d get hundreds of customers on a weekend. You’d see a new house: Knock-knock on the door. They were buying kerosene to heat their houses and hot water. Saturday was the biggest day of the week. I could start on Linden Street, and by the end of the day, the truck was empty.” The founder’s strategy was fairly straight-forward: Early on, he worked out of his house. He would buy kerosene for 10 cents a gallon and sell it for 13 cents.
About 25 years ago, Taylor and his wife moved from the borough to Southridge in New Garden Township. He started a very small garden and fell in love with it -- so much so that he wanted to do more. He bought a nearby plot of land that he calls
Continued on Page 26
Continued from Page 25
his farm. Coincidentally, about that time he was in Hockessin and stopped at a produce stand and saw lima bean seeds for sale. He was surprised that they were somewhat expensive, but he decided to buy a bunch to see why.
He planted them and was amazed to find that they grew very high. “It was like in “Jack and the Beanstalk”— 13 feet,” he said. He frequently wears a T-shirt with the lima bean logo. In spite of his retirement from the parade, he still is widely present in Kennett Square. He was even honored to be the parade’s grand marshal on the year after he retired from its leadership.
Pat said the company follows Bill’s dedication to the town by sponsoring children’s teams, buying refreshments for events, putting out traffic cones for the Kennett Run and supplying snacks for the local balloon festival.
Pat even grills the hot dogs for the annual motorcycle “Blessing of the Bikes” event.
In all, service to the community underlies their work and keeps them in the public eye.
“Heating is a necessity. We really pride ourselves on our service. We always try to get to your house as fast as we can,” Pat concluded.
Meet Kelly Dianne Daniels, also known as the Wine Stellar – your go-to expert, educator, fine wine consultant, and concierge.
“Beyond my love for wine, I’m a proud mom of three, a joyful grandmother, and happily hitched to my husband, Matt.”
Kelly said, “I’ve always been obsessed with the world of wine and food. So, after 35-plus years as the Finance Director at The University of Pennsylvania, I decided to transform my love into a business.”
Embarking on a multi-year journey with the Society of Wine Educators, Kelly achieved her CSW (Certified Specialist of Wine) certification in April 2022. Driven by an insatiable thirst for wine knowledge, she went further, obtaining her Level 2 with distinction from the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET) of London and her Level 1 Sommelier certification with the Wine School of Philadelphia. She is currently gearing up for her WSET Level 3 exam in March of 2024.
Kelly also has her eyes set on becoming certified with the Court of Master Sommeliers. She describes this ongoing pursuit as “never-ending, fun, a lot of work, but something I absolutely love. There is a story in every bottle of wine, and I love learning and sharing those stories with you.”
Recognizing that wine can be unnecessarily intimidating, snobby, and costly, Kelly has redefined the wine-tasting experience. Bringing the winery, tasting room, and fun directly to your home or office, she aims to demystify the world of wine.
Imagine having the opportunity to explore and taste wines you may have overlooked simply because you weren’t sure what was in the bottle. Those French and Italian labels can indeed be tricky—unless you’re a geography expert. Kelly’s unique approach allows you and your guests to savor wines from vineyards around the world in the comfort of your home, providing a cost-effective alternative to the traditional winery visit. Kelly always sprinkles a bit of wine and food pairing education into every event, making the experience not just enjoyable but also enlightening.
“I love the ‘Oh WOW’ look on someone’s face when the food and wine create the perfect harmony; it’s magical. It has converted many skeptics into wine enthusiasts, and I get a lot of joy in crafting these surprises,” Kelly said.
Kelly’s personalized services offer curated selections for various occasions, including weddings, special events (attention event planners), private dinners, corporate team-building, and unique experiences that combine craft activities with fine wines. As a fine wine gifting expert, Kelly can also add a personal touch to each bottle, providing options like custom labels or etched bottles.
For wine enthusiasts, Kelly goes beyond the ordinary, ensuring your cellar is not just stocked but
truly exceptional. She represents three ever-expanding portfolios that cater to both casual sippers and serious collectors alike. These exclusive portfolios showcase a diverse range of wines, from everyday favorites to rare and luxury selections, providing a delightful array for every palate.

Beyond individual services, The Wine Stellar is an advocate for fundraising. Kelly orchestrates wine tasting events that bring people together while generating funds for various causes.
“Fundraising made enjoyable: just add wine!” She said. Kelly knows that sharing a glass brings people together, making it a fantastic tool for raising funds and creating memories.
Serving within a 60-mile radius from her base in Newark, Delaware, and sometimes further if additional travel expenses are covered, she also offers virtual wine experiences. All of Kelly’s contact information can be found at https://bit.ly/ WineStellar.
The road to acclaim for New London Electric Inc. has been paved with nearly a half century of quality work, fair prices and keeping up with codes.
This 47-year-old business on Route 796 in Jennersville has been voted the favorite electrician company in Chester County for the past three years in the Daily Local News “Best of Chester County” poll.
New London Electric is managed and owned by the O’Neill family: Tom, TJ and Josie.
Tom, 64, is the founder and longtime operator. Josie is his wife, and she has managed the office since its beginning. TJ, which is short for Tom Junior, 37, is their son, who three years ago purchased the business from his father.
New London Electric serves a wide area of southern Chester County which TJ estimates is about a half hour drive, more or less, in each direction around their headquarters.
The company operates in three divisions: commercial, residential and generators.
Tom grew up in Aston, Delaware County. He said he became an electrician from the moment he graduated from high school at age 17 and has been in the business ever since.
He said as a young electrician working for another company, he was looking to increase his income with side work. After awhile he got so busy that he decided to try going out on his own.
“I put an ad in the paper, ‘Electrician: No Job Too Small,’” he said. He couldn’t believe how many calls he got.
“Some were for big jobs; some were as small as fixing their fuse box,” he explained.
In the late 1980s, Tom and Josie moved to southern Chester County. They viewed the area as a place that would experience business and residential growth, and would offer a good quality of life.
Their son, TJ, grew up steeped in the culture of the family business, and he said he was happy to go along with this business that operated with one truck and two assistants.
However, after high school, he majored in business administration at Goldey-Beacom College and then proceeded to engage in a five-year apprentice program for electronics.
That educational process has not stopped, either for TJ and his father. They keep serving their community, expanding the company, learning more and keeping up with the codes.
Codes are the regulations and guidelines that are important to ensure safety. They are applied at various levels, including federal, state, county, and municipal levels. Just
recently, TJ and Tom attended a week-long professional conference in Colorado to help keep current on regulations and practices.
Three years ago, after years of serving the family company and expanding his skills, TJ bought the ownership from his father. He came to the leadership position with a passion to expand the business and to make sure potential customers in the region make the choice of New London Electric for their service.
In those three years the company has grown from six employees and three trucks to 18 employees and 14 trucks.
“It was my goal to try to grow,” TJ said.
New London Electric is in a position to tackle almost any electrical situation.
Within the three divisions, they can wire a whole commercial building, outfit a new house and sell a generator to take over the job when a family’s power goes off.
Continued on Page 32
Continued from Page 31
New London Electric is a vendor of Generac generators, which they have in quantity at their workshop and can deliver in a day or two after a request.
TJ said customers have told him after they purchase one, “I should have done this sooner.”
Commercially, they service a variety of customers, including Star Roses, numerous horse farms and some of the boroughs in the area.
Tom said it is particularly important to respond to horse farms in an area because if the electricity goes off, the horses are in physical danger of not getting the water and other things they need.
When he was asked how he has gained the capability of wiring or repairing a whole building, Tom said, “After 47, years you learn how to do it.”
Continued on Page 34
Continued from Page 32
With the arrival of digital communications and management in recent years, knowledge and capability the business has expanded.
TJ said that, in the early years, if there were defects in the procedures somewhere in the nation, the news could not possibly get around very fast
“Now, if someone gets electrocuted in Kansas City, everyone knows it right away,” he said. In that way, the codes address and update practices fast.
The O’Neills advertise, sponsor events and participate in their community.
Throughout his work in the community TJ said he talked to as many successful business professionals as he knew to assure he was on the right path of management. He also continues to take part in community activities like Little League with his children and helps sponsor local activities.
TJ is particularly proud of the new lighted sign along the road outside the business. He said some people have told him they were not aware of their location until recently
when they saw the sign lit up and bringing news. He also makes widespread use of the Internet to promote the business.
How do they feel about the community?
“We love it,” Tom said.
Continued on Page 36
Continued from Page 34
Tom and his son also make an effort to extend help and compassion to their fellow southern Chester County residents.
They recalled the time when a woman called with a power outage and told them five other electricians had refused help because she could not afford their fee.
Tom said he told the woman,“Don’t worry. We’ll work it out.”
It turned out that the woman was about to sell her house. TJ and his family bought it, and it was their first house.
“Good service, fair pieces and keeping up on the codes are the key,” TJ said.
New London Electric and its large warehouse are located at 134 S. Jennersville Road in West Grove. They can be reached at 610-869-7325 or website newlondonelectric.com.
The largest concentration of mushroom growers in the country is located within a 20-mile radius of Kennett Square, the self-proclaimed “Mushroom Capital of the World.” The mushroom industry contributes $1.2 billion to the state economy and sustains 2,300 jobs.
The Yeatman family has been an important part of that industry for over 100 years. What started as a dairy farm with one mushroom house in 1921 is now two farms with 63 houses, packing and shipping facilities, and 190 full-time employees. They ship 15 million pounds of mushrooms annually up and down the eastern seaboard and west to Chicago. In 1989, C.P. Yeatman and Sons changed their name to Mother Earth Organic Mushrooms and became the first certified organic commercial mushroom grower in the United States.
Phorid flies are a common problem for mushroom growers. “We put a lot of money into our air conditioning units to be able to run our facilities cooler. Because the cooler it is, the less the flies will be in there,” she said. “We have to do everything we can to exclude the pests, so they don’t even want to come in.”
Additionally, they do not use the growing media as long as other growers do. “A lot of conventional growers will take three breaks, or flushes of the house. We only take two,” she said, explaining “breaks” and “flushes” are industry terms for harvests. “The longer you let your crop stay in the house, the more disease can come. That’s why after two breaks, we steam off.” Steaming off is their way of sanitizing the house after removal of all of the growing material.
The family-owned business is currently under the leadership of the fourth and fifth generations. Meghan Klotzbach, Vice President of Operations, Sales and Marketing, sat down with Connections to discuss the organic industry and the company.
About half of their product goes to retail chains and distributors that service smaller grocery stores and restaurants. The other half is bulk sales to large restaurant chains and food service companies. Sprouts Farmers Market, a 380-store national chain, is a large retail customer. Green Chef, the organic division of Hello Fresh, a home delivery service, is one of their large bulk sales customers.
In the mid-20th century, pesticides and artificial fertilizers were considered a boon to the agricultural community. They led to higher yields, less crop disease, and lower consumer prices. Understanding the harm these chemicals caused came much later.
Back in 1989, going organic was a gutsy move. Even though it required significant investment compared to growing mushrooms conventionally, the family felt it was worth it. Klotzbach’s great uncle Jim Yeatman (founder Authur Yeatman’s grandson) was instrumental in making the switch and in developing the organic standards with the Northeast Organic Farming Organization (NOFA).
“We did it before there was really a demand for it. We did it more for just health and safety aspects for our employees, our family,” Klotzbach said.
To keep the certification, companies that sell everything they need to grow mushrooms must also be organic certified, which adds to the expense of the raw materials. Since Mother Earth does not use any pesticides, there are very strict cleaning procedures in place to create a pest-resistant environment. “The best way to do that is keep your facilities closed up tight and in good condition. Sanitation level is very high. So, we are always cleaning our facility. We’re always cleaning the floors and the walls,” Klotzbach said.
The Covid-19 pandemic greatly impacted their operations—but only at first. “The restaurants all shut down. We lost about 50-percent of our business in one week,” Klotzbach recalled. Then all of a sudden, orders started

rolling in from home delivery companies like Green Chef, whose business exploded during the pandemic. “They helped our company and I think the produce industry as a whole,” she said. “It really helped us stay alive.” Since people weren’t dining out, they were cooking more. “Everyone shifted towards eating at home, and trying to eat more healthy, fresh foods,” she said. “That kind of played in our favor.”
When asked about challenges they face, Klotzbach quickly said inflation. “Inflation is not playing in our favor,” she said. Because of the higher retail price, people are not buying as much.” An annual report compiled by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) noted that 20222023 unit volume was down, but dollar sales were slightly up, reflecting the price increase of the product. “They are costing more to grow now. They’re costing more to ship now,” she said.
But as inflation eased, sales are improving. “This year they are getting a bit better. Last fall was rough,” she said.
Another never-ending challenge is finding and keeping reliable employees. Seasonal growers benefit from H-2A, the Federal Temporary Agricultural Workers program. “Mushroom and dairy don’t qualify for it since we are both year-round,” she said.
The entire growing cycle, from the placement of the raw materials to the second harvest, takes 9 to 12 weeks. What’s left in the house becomes spent compost—but there is plenty of life left in it yet. Mushroom compost is filled with nutrients, and is an excellent addition to farm and garden soil. Farms from all over use it to fertilize their fields. Organic farms use the compost to grow the hay and straw that is then sold back to Mother Earth as substrate. “It’s a very good sustainable loop of how all of that works together in this area,” she said. The compost is also offered free to area residents, and can be found close to their Country Store on Baker Station Road in West Grove. Cochranville resident Pat Greenfield was filling her buckets when

Connections was on site. She mixes it into her flower and vegetable beds. “The stuff’s magical!” she said.
In addition to her duties at Mother Earth, Klotzbach is on the board of the Mushroom Council, a national group dedicated to industry promotion and research. “We do a lot of research on the varieties and how they are nutritionally beneficial,” she said. Mushrooms have no fat or cholesterol and contain more than 12 vitamins and minerals. Five medium white mushrooms have eight times the vitamin D found in a cup of nonfat fortified milk, more selenium than any other fruit or vegetable, and more potassium per serving than tomatoes.
On Nov. 2, 2023, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro signed House Bill 157 which created a PA Preferred Organic Brand. “Products that earn the PA Preferred Organic brand will give consumers confidence they are getting a quality product that meets the high standards they expect,” Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding said

Continued from Page 42
in a press statement. “The Shapiro Administration is working with the legislature to help build consumer confidence in locally-grown products, so that Pennsylvania organic farmers continue to grow their businesses’ bottom lines and keep Pennsylvania on top.” The statement goes on to say that Pennsylvania is number one in the country for organic sales of mushrooms, livestock, and poultry.
Klotzbach is not sure yet what to think about the PA Preferred Organic label. After all, being organic is what her family’s farm has been all about for 35 years. But she figures it cannot hurt. “Organics is more of a way of life. People are moving toward that, so it’s a good thing for the population,” she said.
Everything about mushrooms including history, organic practices, growing process, and recipes can be found on the website: organicmushrooms.com.

Merton LaBare and his wife Lauren are at the core of M. LaBare Certified Arborist. Mert has over 25 years of experience in the business, including 10 years working at Longwood Gardens.
“Mert and myself are both certified arborists,” Lauren explained. “We’re a small local company that prides ourselves in quality tree care. We do everything from tree planting to pruning tree removal. We do consultations and tree risk assessments. We do it all.”
Based in Unionville, the company covers Pennsylvania and Delaware within a roughly 15-mile radius. This includes the communities of Unionville, West Chester, Kennett Square, Landenberg, Newark and Wilmington.
For this company, the goal is to preserve trees whenever possible. In cases where a property owner may want to have a tree removed because it is oversized or messy, they may be able to recommend pruning so that the owner can keep the tree and enjoy it instead of taking it down.
“We try and preserve trees. We’re not in the business of taking this tree out,” Lauren said.
One service LaBare offers is a risk assessment of trees. If a tree is near a building or there are concerns that it may not be healthy, they
can evaluate the tree for any potential dangers. Beyond just looking at a tree, they can use an instrument called a resistograph to make tiny drillings into the trunk to determine the extent of possible rotten or hollow spots hiding within.
“That gives us a good picture of what’s going on inside the tree,” Lauren explained.
Many times clients will call for an assessment after storm damage or if they notice a problem with their trees such as falling branches, fewer leaves or fungus growing on the bark. Others have their trees checked on an annual basis just to be sure they are all healthy, especially those trees that could possibly cause damage.
“Sometimes defects are hidden, like decay in a tree—you may not see it,” Lauren said. “Clients call when they just notice something different with their tree.”
Last year, with extremely unusual weather conditions that went from hot and dry to very wet, resulted in more clients noticing that their trees were struggling. Lauren is pleased to say that the weather was the cause, and for the most part the trees should recover with no lasting effects this year.
“We would rather you call us when you see a problem or think there is a concern,” she said. “If we look at it quick enough there may be a chance we can do something to keep that tree going and preserve that tree. If you wait, it could be too late.”
To help clients know when to call, LaBare
makes an effort to educate them on their trees. “The more educated they are the better they are at noticing things or understanding what could go wrong,” Lauren said.
In addition to taking down trees when it is necessary, LaBare helps property owners select and plant new trees.
“We will conduct a site visit to determine the client’s needs and wants. We can either recommend trees for a particular spot or recommend a better spot for that particular tree. I’ll come back to the client with a list of trees. If they choose a few they like I will price that out for them,” Lauren said. M. LaBare Certified Arborist will then pick up the new tree, deliver it, plant it and do any related cleanup. They follow up with care information for the new tree, including watering instructions. The larger the new tree, the more care it is going to require during its first few years.
“We work with three or four nurseries where we’ve had success with getting good quality trees,” Lauren said. “We’re pretty picky. We want a good healthy tree for our clients.”

The company spans five generations and 150 years—and is still evolving and expanding as one source for all industrial, construction, fabrication, and maintenance needs…By Monica Thompson Fragale Contributing Writer
M. Davis & Sons, Inc. has 150 years in business and serves as one source for all industrial, construction, fabrication, and maintenance needs.
M. Davis’ move into the Kennett Square area a year and a half ago represented the continued growth of the 150-year-old industrial construction company, as well as an important new chapter in the company’s history that now spans five generations.
“We have grown manpower quite a bit and diversified services,” said Elaine Buonopane, marketing supervisor for M. Davis & Sons, Inc. “There is a footprint in three states now.”
Besides the location on Daylesford Court in East Marlborough Township which includes an office and fabrication shop, there are two locations in Newark for modular fabrication and electrical power distribution equipment manufacturing, and one in Havre de Grace, Maryland, for an office and fabrication shop, according to Buonopane.
Five generations of the Davis family have led the company, beginning with founder Edward R. Davis who created a “tinsmith business” in Delaware in 1870, according to the company’s website. Marcellus Davis Sr. added a “tinsmith shop and store” after he led the business starting in 1910.
The third generation of the Davis family was Marcellus Jr., who, according to the website, made it possible to expand

“into industrial services.” The next Davis was Charles R., whose “vision and drive dramatically expanded the company’s expertise, services, and industries served.”
Charles R. is the current chairman of the board. Buonopane said he grew the company by developing a trusted working relationship with the DuPont Company for mechanical services such as welding and pipefitting
“That really changed the trajectory of the company,” she said.
The current CEO is Charles’ daughter, Peggy (Davis) Del Fabbro, who took over in 2008.
She became “the first woman, and fifth generation of the Davis family to be at the helm of our organization,” according to the website. Peggy was the driving force

behind the company’s woman-owned business certification through Women’s Business Enterprise National Council.
“Charles and Peggy have witnessed an abundance of growth, including the addition of the M. Davis & Sons electrical department in the 1990s, and modular construction services in the early 2000s.”
Also added were boiler services in 2015, electrical power distribution in 2017, and engineering in 2019.
The company employs 450 tradespeople and assists with projects in diverse markets such as renewable energy, pharmaceutical, oil and gas, chemical, and government.
“Because we are diverse in the tradespeople we hire, we offer great career paths. Someone could come in and really learn how to become a multifaceted tradesperson.”
The Kennett shop of M. Davis is located at 227 Daylesford Court, Kennett Square. For more information, go online at mdavisinc.com.
Constellation Energy Corporation is a company doing the right thing for the planet and the right thing for the community. As the nation’s leading producer of carbon-free energy, the company is supplying our energy needs while also going the extra mile to uplift communities through volunteerism, donations, and support for local charitable organizations.
Constellation, a Fortune 200 company is a leading supplier of energy products and services to businesses, homes, community aggregations, and public sector customers across the continental United States, including three-fourths of Fortune 100 companies.
With annual output that is nearly 90 percent carbon-free, Constellation’s hydro, wind and solar facilities, paired with the nation’s largest nuclear fleet have the generating
capacity to power the equivalent of 16 million homes, providing about 10 percent of the nation’s clean energy. They are further accelerating the nation’s transition to a carbon-free future by helping customers reach their sustainability goals and by setting their own ambitious goal of achieving 100 percent carbon-free generation by 2040. The company also works toward that goal by investing in promising emerging technologies to eliminate carbon emissions across all sectors of the economy.
In 2023, Constellation contributed $18.7 million in combined philanthropic giving in support of more than 4,400 charities. This represents a nearly 50-percent increase from the $12.5 million the company and its employees contributed in 2022. Constellation and the Constellation Foundation gave a combined $13.6 million, while its 13,000 employees
donated the remaining $5.1 million. Employees also logged more than 102,000 volunteer service hours in support of community causes.
Locally in Constellation’s Kennett Square, Pa. office, employees volunteered over 3,500 hours of service with area charities and donated over $155,000 through company-matched programs to non-profit organizations in 2023.
“Not only is our company a leader in the clean energy transition, but our employees also have tremendous pride in our passion for community outreach,” said Ron DiSabatino, Vice-President of Nuclear Engineering for Constellation and member of the Chamber’s Board of Directors.
In October, 2023, Constellation hosted the 2nd annual Constellation Generation Executive Golf Tournament at the Kennett Square Golf and Country Club. Over 100 golfers and 25 Constellation Alliance partners/vendors attended the event to support one of Constellation’s core values – being a Catalyst for Change – in communities across the U.S.
Eleven organizations in the Kennett Square area received the proceeds from the event. The charities were able to share their story and mission with the community and executive sponsors. More than $207,000 was raised last year, and $380,000 over the past two years of the tournament.
Many of the beneficiaries of the golf tournament are reached through their membership in the Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce. Beneficiaries reached through the Chamber include Kennett Area Community Service, The Garage, Tick Tock Early Learning Center, Good Neighbors, Friends Home, Anson B. Nixon Park, and LCH Health and Community Services.
“The value of our membership in the Chamber is centered around our passion to support the needs of our community,” DiSabatino said. “The partnerships and meaningful connection we are able to develop by being active members of the members of the Chamber of Commerce are critical.”
