A SMAL TOWN hosts a BIG RACE, thanks to the support of a STRONG COMMUNITY

B. Christopher Daney, CPA, MBA, MST President, Kennett Run Charities www.kennettrun.net

We invite you to join us for the 29th annual Kennett Run on Saturday, May 19. This tradition began in 1989 when Kennett Run Charities was established by local community service groups. Since then, it has been our privilege to promote the general well-being and civic betterment of Kennett Square area residents and organizations. The purpose of the annual Kennett Run is simple: We wish to raise funds for our local non-profit organizations and to improve the health of our community. Since 1989, Kennett Run Charities has made grants totaling more than $1 million to organizations that support the needs of the people of Kennett Square. Last year, we made grants totaling more than $60,000 to more than 50 non-profit organizations. Proceeds from the Kennett Run go directly back into our community. In addition to fundraising, our volunteers have helped with maintenance and redevelopment of Anson B. Nixon Park and many community enrichment programs. As a CPA who does tax work with many local non-profits in the area, I see first-hand how our funding helps support the non-profits, both current and over the long term. We are ready for another successful event this year. Race Director J.J. Simon and his team will have the same course as last year, one that will showcase the Downtown Kennett Square business district. Race day activities include the 10K and 5K runs and the popular 10K and 5K PoweRun, and the 1-Mile Run/Walk. The course map is included in this publication and available at www.kennettrun.net. For our future runners, we will have 1-mile Kids Fun Run around the pond at Anson B. Nixon Park. This year’s 10K will be run in honor of long-time Kennett Run competitor John Schultz, who tragically passed away on November 17, 2016, after being struck by an automobile. John ran the 10K course for many years wearing his signature red shorts and no shirt. We will miss him dearly.

To support local families in need, we are hosting a food drive to benefit Kennett Area Community Service. Please join me and bring your donation of non-perishable food items to the Kennett YMCA on Friday evening or to Anson Park on Saturday during the race. If you cannot bring your donation on race day, please drop your donations off the following week. Many other non-profit community organizations will have information tables in the park on race day, so stop by and learn how you can support your community! This all-volunteer community event is planned, organized and staffed by hundreds of volunteers, including members of the Rotary Club of Kennett Square, Kennett Square Lions Club, the Boy Scouts and local high school students. Robust community involvement makes this event even more special. We are very grateful for the support of our corporate sponsors and race day vendors. With their loyal financial support, this event has been a “win” for the Kennett Square community year after year. Please stop by and see them in the park. We extend our deepest appreciation to East Marlborough Township, the Borough of Kennett Square, Kennett Township Police officers, the Kennett and Longwood fire companies and their EMS staff, and everyone at Anson B. Nixon Park. The event runs smoothly and safely, thanks to their hard work. When you’re running or walking on race day, please give them a big “thank you” – we could not do it without them. A moment of inspiration creates a lifetime of change. Do something to promote better health and register today for the 2018 Kennett Run.

See you on race day!

The Kennett Run: The race that helps define a community, and now runs through it By Richard L. Gaw Staff Writer For the first time in 2017, the Kennett Run began and ended at Anson B. Nixon Park, but that wasn’t the only new wrinkle in the giant fabric that has become Kennett Square’s leading road race. Throughout the morning of May 20, 2017, downtown Kennett Square was filled with both runners and walkers, participants in the 28th annual Kennett Run, who took on State Street to the ringing and continuous

applause of the community. It was a bold move by the race organizers, and one that ultimately drew great praise. “Any time you change a course, you’re always concerned about the reaction by the runners and the walkers, as well as with those you coordinate the race with,” said B. Christopher Daney, president of Kennett Run Charities. “After the race finished at the park, however, we received a lot of positive comments about the new course. Many of the runners and walkers enjoyed

the change in contours. “It was a course that was designed with the safety of the runner, and because it worked out well, we’ve decided to keep the same course this year, which we hope will result in even more competitors, this year.” “At first, I thought that all of the changes in the course may be too much to introduce all at once, but it turned out to be a good idea,” said

race director J.J. Simon. “Everyone had the perspective, for the first time, of looking at Anson B. Nixon Park as the permanent staging area for the event, rather than starting the race in another part of town and then moving everything to the park for the finish and post-race activities.” The key reason for the successful reworking of the Kennett Run Continued on page 8

course last year, Daney said, was to put a more definitive local stamp on the event, and nothing says “Kennett Square” like State Street. “The former routes would go up Route 82 and in the Kennett Golf Course, so competitors never really got to see downtown,” Daney said. “So we thought, ‘Let’s show off Anson B. Nixon Park as more than just a finish, but as a starting place, as well. Let’s also showcase State Street on a Saturday morning, to create a community event where people could line the streets and cheer on the runners and walkers.” Daney said that he and his fellow race organizers received great cooperation from Kennett Borough Manager Joseph Scalise; Kennett Borough Police Chief William Holdsworth and his staff; as well as the police departments in Kennett Township and East Marlborough Township. In its 29 years, backed by an enthusiastic board of directors and a

town that has embraced their efforts, Kennett Run Charities, Inc. has given back to the community it serves by granting more than $1.1 million to local organizations since 1990 – funding that has created opportunities for thousands of residents in the Kennett Square area. “The power of these contributions is seen every day in our community,” said Simon. “It creates a continuing and positive cycle, that continues to build momentum with each contribution. At first, one person receives an opportunity, and then, through that opportunity, he or she is then able to help another person and then another person, and so on. “Kennett Run Charities has created a ‘give-give-give’ effect.” This continuum of caring extends far beyond grants and donations. This year, Kennett Run Charities, Inc. has helped defray the cost of much needed repairs along the race path in Anson B. Nixon Park, and is also providing ten complimentary Kennett Run entries to four local organizations this year: La Communidad Hispana,

the After-the-Bell Program at Kennett Middle School, the WIN program at the Kennett Consolidated School District, and the Garage Community and Youth Center. To contact Staff Writer Richard L. Gaw, email rgaw@ chestercounty.com.

10 KENNETT RUN - CHESTER COUNTY PRESS - WEDNESDAY, MAY 9, 2018

The origins of the Kennett Run: We’ve run a long way in 29 years As the Kennett Run prepares to celebrate its 29th year, it is important to return to the first footsteps it made in 1989, when Rotarian Michael R. Perna proposed to the Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of Kennett Square that Rotary join with other Kennett area service clubs to host an event designed to accomplish three major goals: • The achievement of sustainable camaraderie among Kennett area service organizations and citizens, and the fostering of an esprit de corps among the ethnically, economically, and occupationally diverse groups that comprise our community. • The establishment of a fundraising vehicle that would net everincreasing sums for expenditure to promote the general well-being and civic betterment of Kennett area residents, organizations and projects; and • The showcasing of the town of Kennett Square and its environs by drawing participants and spectators from the region, the nation and perhaps even the world. The first year’s events, held on April 21, 1990, consisted of a series of walks and runs ranging from 1 mile to 10K, and were sponsored by approximately a dozen individuals and businesses, and attracted well

over 100 participants, several hundred spectators, and approximately 50 volunteers. Net proceeds approximated $1,500, after repayment to Rotary of its $3,000 “seed” contribution. The leadership of Kennett Rotary, most notably Richard A. Sansbury, Robert A. Blackhall, Charles H. Weaver, Michael R. Perna and James P. Schultz, adopted the race proposal and designated the sum of $3,000 as seed money for this event, contingent upon the full participation of two other service clubs: the Kennett Lions Club and the Kennett Area Jaycees. Shortly after they were requested by Rotary to do so, these service clubs wholeheartedly endorsed the project by pledging their considerable administrative and human resources to bring the idea to fruition. Keith McGrath, then president of the Kennett Lions Club, was a staunch supporter of the race concept. The 5K walk, one of the six events collectively referred to as “the Kennett Run,” was later dubbed the “Keith McGrath Memorial Walk” after a tragic accident took his life only months after the first Kennett Run. Several years later, when an unfortunate turn of events resulted in the disbandment of the Kennett Area Jaycees, The Southern Chester County Exchange Club accepted the invitation to permanently fill the gap as a full partner along with the Kennett Rotary and Lions Club.

The annual Joe Hector PoweRun : A Kennett Run tradition ©

The annual Joe Hector PoweRun ©, a separate event run by the Kennett Area YMCA, is held in conjunction with the Kennett Run 5K and 10K races, and it’s become a big part of a continuin Kennett Square tradition. The PoweRun© biathlon involves skills of strength and endurance, measured by a combination of weight-lifting and distance running. Men and women 14 and over are eligible to compete. This event will be held in Anson B. Nixon Park this year, between 7:00 & 8:30 a.m.

The weight that men and women are responsible to lift is as follows: Men Age 14-18 - 60% of Body Weight Age 19-29 - 100% of Body Weight Age 30-39 - 100% of Body Weight Age 40-49 - 100% of Body Weight Age 50-59 - 100% of Body Weight Age 60-69 - 60% of Body Weight Age 70+ - 60% of Body Weight Women Age 14-18 - 60% of Body Weight Age 19-29 - 60% of Body Weight Age 30-39 - 60% of Body Weight Age 40-49 - 60% of Body Weight Age 50-59 - 60% of Body Weight Age 60-69 - 60% of Body Weight Age 70+ - 60% of Body Weight For each successfully completed repetition, in any/ all gender and age groups, will result in a 30-second deduction for the 5K and/or a 60-second deduction for the 10K. The lower the score the better. Some winners may even score into the negative numbers! Awards will be given to top three overall males and females in 5K & 10K runs. Awards to the top three men and women in each race for the following age categories: 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+

Rules and Regulations Weighing In: All participants must weigh in at the scales provided. Participants will leave their shoes and shirts on. No deduction will be taken for clothing. Participant’s lifting weight will correlate to bodyweight as calculated by the judges. Bench Press: No warm-ups on weight bench. (Other benches are provided for warm-up.) Collars must be used. Bar must touch chest on every repetition. Arms must be FULLY extended at the end of each repetition (If you have a physical limitation that prevents you from straightening your arms, you must inform the official before you start lifting). Once the bar ceases to rise or begins negative movements, the spotter and/or judge will end the session. Back and hips must remain flat on the bench at all times. Any arching or moving which causes the hips to come off the bench will result in the termination of the attempts. The number of repetition prior to the hips coming off the bench will be used for the PoweRun© calculations. Feet are to remain in the same position throughout the bench press, either firmly on the floor or planted on the bench. A pause of more than 3 seconds either at the top of the lift or the bottom of the lift will trigger a warning from the official. It movement doesn’t occur immediately thereafter, the number of repetitions done to that point will be used for the PoweRun© calculations. Grip placement left to the discretion of the competitor. Once the repetitions have been initiated, the grip cannot be changed. The judge’s ruling is FINAL. No appeals will be allowed.

Kennett Run 2017 As seen in the Chester County Press, May 24, 2017

Annual Kennett Run enjoys new course, same camaraderie By Richard L. Gaw Staff Writer Soon after race director J.J. Simon signaled the start of the 10K race at the 28th annual Kennett Run on May 20, Betsy Spence of Unionville looked for another runner with whom she could keep pace. Karen Antell of Landenberg, running slightly ahead of her through Anson B. Nixon Park and along State Street, was that person. They nearly collided at a water stop. Antell almost hit Spence with a water cup. She apologized, and Spence replied, “I’ve been right behind you the whole way. You’re setting my pace.” Strangers when the race began, they crossed the finish line together. In celebration of Joe O’Malley’s 75th birthday, several members of the O’Malley family, from Prince-

ton, N.J. and Kennett Square, donned light blue jerseys to commemorate the occasion. Dripping with perspiration at the conclusion of their races, they gathered at the party in the park for a late morning of pizza, bananas, doughnuts and beer. Nine-year-old Hunter Sayles joined his mother, Melissa, in running the 5K race, and after finishing, helped himself to several doughnuts. By 10:30, he was lined up to participate in the one-mile Fun Run around the lagoons, where he finished in second place. For every pair of sneakered feet that crossed the start and finish lines last Saturday morning, there were stories just like these, as hundreds of both competitive and weekend runners took to the race’s new course on a 60-degree day. For the first time, Anson B. Nixon Park served as the event’s center

point, a move made by Kennett Run officials earlier this year to consolidate operations and showcase the business center of Kennett Square. As the Party in the Park got under way, Kennett Run Charities president Christopher Daney pointed to the hundreds of runners, their families and community members who were gathering near the food tents, vendor areas and the Two Stones beer booth. “I talked to a lot of the runners, who were very, very positive about the new course, and a lot of people just attending here today are very pleased about doing everything in Anson B. Capturing the extraordinary in the ordinary: The Kennett Run through the lens of Heather Schaen All photos by Heather Schaen By Richard L. Gaw Staff Writer Heather Schaen, the official photographer for the Kennett Run since 2016, arrives at the annual event with her colleague, Kathy Friedman, at a time when most of Chester County is still asleep. Schaen and Friedman begin their day before 7 a.m. at the Joe Hector PoweRun event, and in the moments before the 5K and 10K races begin, they strategically scatter in two directions: Schaen to the starting line and Friedman into the middle of the course.

“Then I run through the park to get back to the finish line, while Kathy gets back to the starting line to photograph the children who are lining up for the Fun Run,” said Schaen, who takes hundreds of photos every year for the Kennett Run. “I see something interesting and extraordinary in the ordinary settings, and I get to see it on people’s faces and in the beauty of each day. If she had to pick a favorite place to work at the Kennett Run, Schaen would choose the finish line, where she sees hundreds of competitors in the last few steps of their race. “I see smiles, tears and I see absolute joy,” she said. “Later, when I look at the photographs I’ve taken, I see for instance, the photo of the young boy with the look of determination on his face, struggling to get to the finish line. When people see me taking their photograph at the finish line, they tend to stand up a little taller, as if to say, “I’ve accomplished my goal.’ “I love being able to capture those moments, most of all.” In addition to her work for the Kennett Run, Heather Schaen specializes in events, real estate, corporate and casual profile photography, and weddings. The Rose Project to headline Party in the Park By Richard L. Gaw Staff Writer

O

n Saturday morning, May 19, Anson B. Nixon Park in Kennett Square will serve three roles. It will be the start of the 29th annual Kennett Run. It will be the finish of the 29th annual Kennett Run. It will also welcome competitors, their friends and families and the local community to the annual Party in the Park. This year, the local band The Rose Project will headline the Party in the Park, led by lead vocalist and songwriter Bill Rose, Al Hahn on bass, Dave Walker on lead guitar, Anita Samis on vocals and keys and Steve K on drums. Formed in 2008, The Rose Project is a incredible blend of musical influences – Live, Midnight Oil, Eddie Vedder, Conor Oberst, My Morning Jacket and Ben Harper immediately come to mind – but the band is most defined by Rose’s introspective lyrics, influenced by Rose’s frequent travels around the world. With blends of acoustic folk and passion for truth, The Rose Project conveys stories of earthly struggles and anecdotes of civil oppression, taking a page from the folk music sound of the 1960s and the modern-day artists who are lending truth and meaning to a good beat. Their recordings have included “Leaving it all Behind,” “As the Wind Begins to Blow,” “Rose Project EP” and “Free Love.” While the sound of The Rose Project will serve as the soundtrack to the post-race festivities this year, members of the community 21 and older will be invited to enjoy beer from Two Stones Pub, as well as stop by several local businesses and organizations. They include Anchor Fitness, ATI Physical Therapy, Bavarian Motorsports, Bentley Homes, Brandywine Floor Coverings, CCRES, Delaware Orthopaedic Specialists, Greenmore Farm Animal Rescue, Hunter Acupuncture, Independence Wealth Service, Kacie’s Cause, Kennett Community Services, Longwood Family Chiropractic, Mercer Auto Body, Premier Orthopaedics, Q-fix Systems, ServPro, the Titans, the Upland Country Day School and the Kennett Area YMCA. The Party in the Park will also be the site of the awards ceremony to honor the top finishers in each category.
