Letter from the Chairman Dear Members and Business Associates, I am humbled to Chair the Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors in 2019. As I meet with other business professionals in the region, I am continually impressed by the reputation of our organization. We are known as people who welcome guests, make worthwhile introductions, and help create a positive impact on the business community in our service area. Southern Chester County continues to experience intelligent growth. Our business community consists of enterprises, large and midsize companies, small businesses and entrepreneurships, all representing a variety of industries. Along with a host of nonprofits, Erik Gudmundson we help make Chester County a better place to live, work, and play. As we begin 2019, our objectives build on successes of previous years. We will: – Raise awareness and enhance the value of the Chamber. – Work with our committees to involve more Members in better defining what it means to be a satisfied Member. This will result in sustained and increased attendance and participation in Chamber programs and events. – Improve Membership retention and growth. We want to empower all Members to better understand the contributions and capabilities of the Chamber, so that they are proud to promote their Chamber Membership status. – Increase educational opportunities for Members. By offering more relevant programming to help Members better run their business, we are helping them to achieve success. – Form new strategic partnerships and enhance existing relationships with other organizations. We are focused on the Southern part of Chester County; however, we live and work in a larger ecosystem. We want to assist, and be assisted, by other organizations in the region when our goals align. It’s important we leverage the collective strength of multiple organizations in the area and embrace our service overlap to work more efficiently for our Members. The two primary functions of any Chamber of Commerce are: – Advocate and act as a spokesperson for our Membership, our business community, and our professional community, and help turn those thoughts and words into action: – Implement specific services and projects that benefit our Members as a whole. The Southern Chester County Chamber is completing these functions today, and by operating with our 2019 objectives in mind, we will deliver better value to the Membership as a whole and improved service to our community. The Chamber exists for YOU – our Members. We are a Member-centric organization that is owned by and operated for its Members. The Staff and Board cannot accomplish all of these objectives on our own, so to continue with our Member-centric philosophy, it’s imperative that Members get involved. I encourage all to serve on a committee – give something back to the Chamber and build long lasting relationships. Committee listings and descriptions are available on the Chamber’s website. Please feel welcome to ask a committee chair, our Chamber President Cheryl Kuhn, or me, if you have any questions or suggestions as we continue to move forward, or if you would like some tips on how you can become more effectively involved. His invisible footprint: A conversation with Peter Kjellerup

Growing up in Denmark, Peter Kjellerup’s dream was to become a farmer. He eventually achieved that dream, but at the time, he did not know the incredible course his life would take, beginning with his marriage to Mandy Cabot in 1982 and the start of Dansko, Inc. in 1990. For anyone who has had the privilege of knowing Peter, however, they know that he is also defined by his dedication to making the world a better place, both globally and locally. For his service to his community and the world, Peter received the coveted Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award by the Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce, in ceremonies held on Feb. 23 at Longwood Gardens. On the eve of this honor, Connections met with Kjellerup to talk about his early life, his wife Mandy, his many Continued on Page 14

passions and his commitment to the world he lives in. The following are condensed excerpts from his interview with Richard L. Gaw of the Chester County Press. No one gets to become Citizen of the Year without having inspired others, or by having served as a mentor to others. Who inspired you, particularly when you were growing up, both in Denmark, and later in Germany, where you earned an equestrian degree in Hamburg? When I was young, my riding instructor Gustav Martens changed the path I was probably going to take, which was the path my parents wanted me to take. My father didn’t agree at all with what I was doing in the horse world, and it was really my mother who protected me and let me develop my skills. Martens took me in as a protégé when I was 14 years old. I began teaching other kids how to ride properly, and ran an equestrian summer camp for him. I was very sure that this was the path I wanted to take in life, and as a consequence, it led me to run a farm for 12 years. I looked up to Martens as a father figure and mentor. You and Mandy have had a tremendous partnership, and together, you’ve been able to accomplish so much. How does she inspire you? Mandy’s nature and her whole character is unselfish. It’s never about Mandy and that fits together so well for us. She has strengths that I don’t have and I have strengths that she doesn’t have, and we figured that out about a month after we first met. I am more of a handson guy, while Mandy is very good at the administrative work that isn’t my strength. When we set out to build our business, we felt that the sum of our combined strengths would serve us well. Also, we bring the best out in each other. You effectively retired from Dansko, Inc. at the end of last year. The word “Retirement” implies an ending, but you’re just beginning. We’ve already started on our next chapter, big time. While we still work with several non-profits locally, Mandy and I had been looking for a place where we could both spend some time in our retirement and make an impact. We ended up in Belize, where we now have a house. (Belize is a small country in Central America bordered by Mexico to the north, Guatemala to the west and south, and the Caribbean Sea to the east.) Mandy and I are involved with programs related to the Waterkeeper Alliance in Belize, originated by its founder,

Robert Kennedy, Jr. Now that the Waterkeeper Alliance is in place, Mandy and I are trying to get the government to preserve the bays and to protect mangroves and manatees. We are also working to preserve a 22,000-acre parcel of land that is nestled in the Maya Mountains and contiguous with several key nature reserves. Twenty-thousands of those acres is virgin rainforest, and the rest has been poorly farmed in citrus and coconuts. We are looking to rehabilitate that smaller piece and introduce native cacao as well, so that local farmers can model a more sustainable way of making a living. We believe that the impact we can have in Belize is enormous. Do you feel that the business prototype that Dansko, Inc. has developed will pay itself forward to future generations of entrepreneurs and business leaders? The values of young people are changing. At one time, it was all about getting rich quick. The focus today is on impact. Where can you put your dollars (if you’re an investor), or your skills (if you’re an employee) so that you can make an impact consistent with the values that you believe in? It’s a shift that’s starting to come through today, and with this new generation, things will change for the better. I’m also hopeful that Dansko’s model of 100 percent employee ownership catches on in a meaningful way. Not only does it give employees a vested interest in the business that they help grow, but it allows them to invest back into our community. Your motto is “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” To many who know you and have worked with you, it’s a large footprint, but it’s a footprint that, while being felt, has never been seen. Was that part of a larger intention you wished to achieve in life? It all happened coincidentally, through a kind of serendipity. Mandy and I will both tell you that none of this was really planned. What was planned was our wish to share things – the idea that if you have something to share, please share. When we were starting out with our farm (Five-Star Farm, an 80-acre, 60-stall training facility), our philosophy was built on how we could share our knowledge and our background. With Dansko, it was about sharing great footwear with our customers and a great workplace with our employees. hester County is known for its equestrian community, which in turn provides jobs and encourages open space preservation. The Thoroughbred industry is particularly strong in the state, and Kennett Square is the home office for the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association (PHBA). “We register, market and promote all of the Thoroughbred race horses in the state,” said executive secretary Brian Sanfratello. The PHBA works to advance Thoroughbred breeding and racing in the state through promotional and incentive programs. When a PA-Bred horse places first, second or third at a Pennsylvania racetrack, a bonus is paid to the breeder, the race horse owner, and the stallion owner as well if the stallion is a registered PA Stallion. Horses are considered PA-Bred if they are born in the state from a mare that meets the domicile requirements. “We do that to make sure the farms in Pennsylvania receive boarding money from mares coming from outside the state to be born in Pennsylvania. They have to spend time in PA so they can be eligible to be a PA-Bred,” Sanfratello said. In addition, stallions standing in Pennsylvania that are registered with the PHBA qualify their foals for additional bonuses. “The stallion does not have to be registered, but if the stallion is a registered PA stallion, then the breeder will receive double the awards,” Sanfratello said. “They can breed to someone in Maryland or Kentucky and come back to PA, but they would get smaller bonuses. We put out an annual stallion directory which lists all of the registered stallions in Pennsylvania, with information on the program and awards. We have quite a few new stallions this year, which is proof that the program is doing well. “The breeders who were going to sell those horses or race them themselves would register them with us,” he continued. “The benefits of registration are that if they race at any of the three Thoroughbred tracks in Pennsylvania, Parx, Penn National, or Presque Isle, they would be entitled to fantastic bonuses. They get bonuses as the breeder of the horse, whether

they own the horse or not when it races.” There are even races limited to just PA-Bred horses that pay extra bonuses, and PaRx racetrack in Bucks County will host Pennsylvania Day at the Races on Aug. 3, 2019.

Not only does it give them an additional boost to help out PA residents, you can see the amount of jobs that it also creates -- from the breeder to the blacksmith, the veterinarian, and the farm help. It is responsible for around 20,000 jobs.” Along Chester County roads, you may see signs posted by Thoroughbred farms, reading: Pennsylvania Race Horse Development Fund Supports This Open Land. The PHBA is also supportive of programs that help Thoroughbreds find new homes when their racing days are over. They may become fox hunters, polo ponies, dressage horses, or pleasure mounts. “Because of the hard work done by rehoming organizations like Turning For Home, based at PaRx, and New Start at Penn National, when our horses finish racing, they can have a second career,” Sanfratello said. “We want to make sure not only are the horses we breed taken care of during the time they are racing, but also after they’re finished racing,” he said. “Thoroughbreds make fantastic pleasure horses.” PHBA offices are at 701 E. Pointing the way to the future Landscapes3 looks at the county’s preservation and progress from many angles In late November, 2018, the Chester County Commissioners approved Landscapes3, a blueprint for the county’s future on many fronts. The passage of a comprehensive plan provided a tenyear plan for Chester County that will guide decision making, municipal planning and implementation, and create a balance between growth and preservation. The

plan focuses on what life is expected to look like in Chester County by 2045. It was adopted by County Commissioners Michelle Kichline, Kathi Cozzone and Terence Farrell. Molded from six goal areas – Preserve, Protect, Appreciate, Live, Prosper and Connect -- the principles Continued on Page 22

of the plan commit to protecting the county’s open spaces, natural areas and historic landscapes; maintain the smart growth of its urban and suburban centers; commit to diverse and affordable housing; expand public transit and increases pedestrian and bicycle networks; promote collaboration between business and community entities; and respond to changing market scenarios through the use of modern technology. “Landscapes3 will renew our commitment to balancing growth and preservation while embracing the unique characteristics of our county, including healthy natural areas, robust farms, cherished historic sites and vibrant communities,” Kichline said. “The plan also calls for diverse housing, thriving businesses, quality education and accessible transportation.”

Development of Landscapes3 was guided by the Planning Commission’s nine-member volunteer advisory board and by a 27-member steering committee. Implementation of the plan is expected to begin this year. “This has been a long and worthwhile process in which we have heard from various stakeholders about what they value in Chester County,” said Chester County Planning Commission Executive Director Brian O’Leary. “The Planning Commission is looking forward to implementing initiatives, while continuing to collaborate with our partners. We have a tremendous work program that touches on all the goal areas of Landscapes3.” Some of the major components of the plan include completing an economic value of protected open space study; updating an inventory of natural resource alliances; creating a National Register interactive map; generating an affordable housing zoning tool; updating an existing urban community design guide; and creating an inventory of the county’s trail network.

O’Leary said that a key impetus to get a working plan in place stems in part from a need to determine the best way to manage the projected 146,000 new residents who are anticipated to move to the county between now and 2045. Translated, that’s 55,000 more homes, 88,000 more jobs and 64,000 more seniors – a 30 percent growth, O’Leary said. The demographic landscape is predicted to change during that time as well, as seniors live longer and the racial and ethnic makeup of the county continues to become more diverse. The plan takes its working playbook from the original Landscapes plan that was adopted more than 20 years ago, and its successor, Landscapes2. Getting to the signatures of Commissioners Farrell, Cozzone and Kichline on the resolution didn’t happen overnight; it was a three-year collaborative process of gathering ideas and opinions from municipal officials, residents and business owners. presentations throughout the county, six public meetings, attended 10 steering meetings, and gathered the opinions of 5,978 survey responders. During the hearing in 2018, several county residents raised certain issues related to the plan. One resident asked the Commissioners how the plan will embrace the use of solar resources. “We can certainly help municipalities with ordinances that will help them allow their residents to do that in a way that fits in with the character and culture of their particular community,” Cozzone said. “While there’s nothing specifically in the plan, it’s something we can look at, and perhaps compile some resources that we can make available to the folks who wish to figure how to do that.” One resident expressed a concern that the county is not wholly committed to honoring its history. She told the Commissioners that too often, she will see a historic home or structure right beside a commercial develop-

ment or modern store. She also complained about sign pollution throughout the county. “Is there anything in the plan that says that you can leave something in its natural state?” she said. “It’s making everything looks like suburbia?” Kichline said that the plan can’t dictate a township’s zoning laws, but it can advise municipalities to take historic structures into consideration when writing their laws. “I do know there is some extensive commentary in Landscapes3 about the importance of historic preservation,” she said. “We do continue to have on our planning commission a staff member, Karen Marshall, who is dedicated to those types of issues. It is important to us.” Given that creating opportunities for affordable housing is such a key priority of Landscapes3, one resident asked the Commissioners how they define affordable housing. “Is it determined by size, cost or the community it is in?” he asked.

“From a bricks and mortar perspective, it’s been a major topic in the county for some time,” said Cozzone, who referred to some affordable housing developments planned in the county. “What they look like, and who will live there, will depend in large part on how they are structured,” she said. “That’s why the public-private partnership is so important. Some might be for small, starter families. Some might be for empty nesters, and some might be for those in between. Establishing those housing options, Cozzone said, depends on encouraging municipalities to set their zoning laws with affordable housing in mind, so as not to freeze out middle-income individuals and their families. “There are folks who will need vouchers, and we need to continue ensure that we will continue to have those options available, but we also need to make sure we have properties available for teachers and police officers, and folks in the middle-management kinds of jobs in

our communities,” Cozzone said. “There isn’t a cookiecutter solution, but I think that’s what is going to make it successful – the ability to be flexible and make a determination as to what’s the best way to move forward for each community.” An annual progress report will keep track of Landscapes3’s progress, and monitor how the plan is protecting open space; encourage the county’s municipalities to enact natural resource regulations; maintain its commitment to historic tourism; make sure that housing projects match the plan’s vision of housing; focus on how taxes are assessed in urban centers; and continue to develop transportation options. Wings for Success gives women a step up to employment By Chris Barber Correspondent

or many women, the road to success at work comes with dressing well, putting in effort and showing up on time. Unfortunately, others need a boost, especially when they cannot afford to dress for interviews and look businesslike when they arrive for an interview or come to the job. That is where Wings for Success comes in. This non-profit agency, based in Kennett Square and Frazer, provides high-quality business garments and other services for women in need, at no cost. According to its mission statement, Wings for Success helps women build confidence, not only by providing work-appropriate clothing, but also by providing workshops to support clients as they embark on their job search and prepare to start new jobs. All the services are free of charge, and presentations in Spanish are available upon request. Wings for Success was formed in 1997 by a group of women who saw that not having work-appropriate attire was a barrier to finding a job. Over the years, Wings has grown from an all-volunteer organization to a highfunctioning professional organization with three staff members, supported by a group of more than 120 active volunteers. “In 20 years, we have built partnerships with over 60 organizations that refer women in need to Wings. Some women come to us escaping domestic violence, struggling with homelessness or finishing their last round of chemo. Whatever the situation, every woman coming through our doors has a need that we can meet,” said executive director Jill Lauffenberg. This organization has grown from a building in West Chester to a headquarters in Frazer (490 Lancaster Ave.) and another one in Kennett Square (457 Birch St.). Lauffenberg added, “At Wings for Success, we welcome women of all circumstances with compassion and care. The staff, volunteers and donors are individuals who have found their wings and are helping women discover their own.” At its two sites, Wings maintains a large inventory of clothing suitable for many forms of employment. They include professional, business casual, retail, food service, agriculture and medical. The clothing comes from contributions, which women are asked to deliver to the Frazer site for distribution preparation. Wings for Success sets high standards for the clothing they receive. First, everything must be in new or like-new condition, and for the current season. Additionally, clothing must have been purchased in the past three years, clean, odor free and void of any needed repairs. For handbags and shoes, they must be free from visible wear, inside and out. One recipient of the Wings services and goods said, “I was surprised there was a place like that for people. I guess I expected it to look like Goodwill,

Burton’s Barber Shop: A place where ‘Everybody knows your name By Chris Barber Correspondent

n many towns, a barber shop is just a barber shop. But in Kennett Square, Burton’s is much more than that. Granted, you can get a fine haircut there, but Burton’s Barber Shop is equally known as a shrine to baseball and headquarters for the beloved Old Timers Hall of Fame, an honor bequeathed on regional athletes who excelled in the sport beyond the high-school level. Located on West State Street, Burton’s has survived for 127 years. It’s owned and operated by third-generation barber Bob Burton, 82, whose grandfather, Amos Burton, founded it in 1892. Inside, in addition to three barber chairs plus mirrors, the shop’s walls, shelves and counters are filled with local and major league baseball memorabilia. Burton is proud of them all, and he knows the names and legends connected to most of those people pictured. He has his opinions, and they are strongly based on his knowledge of the game and the Philadelphia Phillies. Anyone who has the urge to talk baseball will find eager and plentiful conversation while Burton is trimming his hair. It’s been that way for more than 100 years, as the pictures scattered around the room show. Burton pointed to one vintage and faded black-and-white photo on the counter, saying, “There’s my grandfather, Amos, with Herb Pennock in an adult league. Amos was catching for Pennock.” Pennock, a famous New York Yankees Hall of Famer in the early 20th century, was a Kennett Square native whose daughter married Hall of Famer Eddie Collins’ son. The Collins family still lives in the Kennett Square area. Burton is fond of telling the stories of Pennock bringing Yankees great Babe Ruth to Kennett Square for visits and occasional horseback riding events. The reason, as Burton tells it, is that Pennock and Ruth played baseball in the days when there were no night games. When the Yankees were in Philadelphia, Pennock would bring Ruth out to Kennett Square to stay overnight in the borough’s hotel. Sometimes people stop by the barber shop just to catch up with friends, even if they don’t need a haircut. Often those 28

guests are athletes who live or have lived nearby. Among those who have dropped in are the late Dallas Green, former Phillies pitcher Curt Schilling and former Eagles football coach Dick Vermeil. Every year, Burton and his Phillies contacts bring in a speaker from the team – a former player or broadcaster – to speak at the Kennett Square Old Timers Hall of Fame Banquet. The hall honors eight to 10 former local athletes who have excelled in baseball beyond the high-school level. In the years since Bob Burton took the reins of the barber shop, little has changed in the mood or decor. Burton said the hours have altered, however, with a shift in the demographics of southern Chester County. He now rises before dawn to get an early jump on the day. “I used to start at 8 a.m. because that’s when Kennett Square woke up. Now, with so many people commuting to Philadelphia and New York needing haircuts, I start around 4:30 in the morning,” he said. 2019 • Volume 2——

Also, in 2001, he hired his first female barber, Karen Peterson, who remains an integral part of the staff. The spirit of the shop endures through the years. Burton’s continues to be one of the jewels in the crown that helps Kennett Square remain a popular destination and a unique den of baseball enthusiasm.

CHESTER COUNTY HOSPITAL SETS EYES ON ITS LARGEST EXPANSION YET In 2020, Chester County Hospital will complete a 250,000 square foot expansion and 26,000 square foot renovation plan that will make world-class health care accessible to all of Chester County. The project will include 15 state-of-the-art operating rooms, three high-tech labs for cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology, and new areas for interventional cardiology and pre-admission testing. These additions will aid the hospital’s nationally recognized medical staff, nurses and care teams in providing the highest quality care possible to patients. The expansion will also include a 99-bed tower featuring private patient rooms for peaceful healing, an expanded Emergency Department with thirteen additional rooms for expedited care, a new community pharmacy, calming public spaces and interior courtyard, and additional dining and shopping options in the new café bistro and Gift Shop.

Collaboration and Planning Planning an expansion of this size and complexity requires consensus building among multiple stakeholders. To get a true idea of the time and effort that has been invested, imagine the undertaking as an iceberg and the construction as the tip that sits above the waterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s surface. We physically only see a small part of the larger picture. For over two years, beginning in 2015, the hospital engaged architects, clinicians and other stakeholders to seek their input on areas throughout the hospital, including the operating rooms, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, Intensive Care Unit, patient rooms and Emergency Department. Both 3D models and fullscale mock-ups were utilized to test and ensure that the design was optimized for the experience of both the medical provider and the patient. The planning committee also incorporated concepts from evidence-based design to plan for the ultimate healing environment. For example, operational flow mapping from the patient experience perspective revealed opportunities to eliminate unnecessary steps, allowing caregivers to provide more effective direct patient care. The design meetings concluded before the start of construction. Similar planning sessions will also be conducted to address how to best incorporate new and updated spaces into the rest of the hospital so they function seamlessly. Designing a Better Space for Healing The expansion will promote an environment that fosters healing by giving patients and their families choice and control, and offers care providers a compelling place to work. This new space will resonate with the needs of patients, families and medical providers and will support the values of a community-based hospital. Chester County will benefit from having urban innovation right here in the suburbs. The expansion will allow more space for the most sophisticated medical procedures, provide more personalized care for inpatients, increase the patient care space in the Emergency Department and allow local residents and the surrounding communities to stay close to home to receive the highest quality of care. School,” said Dunn, a longtime teacher and coach at the school. “I taught him in science, coached him in lacrosse and ice hockey, and I always knew that he was also interested in aviation, as I was. When Jon was in the ninth grade, I asked him if he’d be interested in finishing a balsa airplane model I was struggling to complete. He took it and handed it back to me the next day.” Years later, Martin received his pilot’s license when he was 17 years old, and after he graduated from Penn State, he accumulated additional ratings, including his CFI (Certified Flight Instructor). With thee credentials, Martin subsequently became Dunn’s flight instructor, and within a matter of months and several hours in the sky, Dunn had achieved his official pilot’s license. It was during that time that Martin began to lay the plans for a flight school at the Flying Field, and approached Dunn with the offer to operate it. “At first, I told Jon that I had no desire to do that at that point in my life,” Dunn said. “I lost sleep for an entire week in considering Jon’s offer. Why would I spend all of this money getting into a business at this stage on my life? I’ve never failed following Jon’s

ometimes, the seeds of success are sown from the most humble of beginnings. When the New Garden Flight Connection formed at the New Garden Flying Field in October 2009, it began with one plane – a Cessna 172 – and was run out of a tiny office at the Flying Field that required climbing several steps to get to its perchlike setting. Space was so much at a premium that Aviation Director Jon Martin fashioned Flight Connection Owner and Operator Court Dunn’s office out of a closet. As it celebrates its tenth anniversary this year, the Flight Connection now has 10 flight instructors and a full fleet of Cessna planes, with about 1,100 introductory flight lessons given to future aviators whose demographics range from teenagers to retirees, who come with a passion to learn about the wonders of aviation, while at the wheel. One could say that the New Garden Flight Connection began when a mutual appreciation about aviation formed between a teacher and his student. “Jon was a student of mine at the Upland Country Day 34

advice, ever, so there I was, traveling to Rochester, New York with Jon to purchase that Cessna 172.” “It was a giant leap of faith for both of us, but we both realized that there was a tremendous need to teach others how to fly,” Martin said. The New Garden Flight Connection provides its students with a wide variety of instructional levels. Its flight training courses allow prospective pilots to learn skills like takeoffs and landings, aircraft handling and maneuvers, to long-distance planning. Its Ground School prepares future pilots for the Federal Aviation Administration’s written exam, in a classroom environment where students learn from professional instructors. The minimum standard to qualify for a pilot’s license is 40 hours of flight training, but Martin said that it often more than 60 hours. “You’ve got to crawl before you can walk.,” Martin said. “You can walk before you can run and you’ve got to run before you can run a marathon. It’s the same type of thing when learning to fly, and it begins with learning the fundamentals. Once you understand the basic foundations of aviation, then you can build upon that and begin to

learn how to maneuver a plane, under the tutelage of our instructors.” When Dunn was eight years old, his father took him to an air show at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey. It was Dunn’s first visit to an air show, and although the trip kicked off a life-long passion for aviation, Dunn remembered that the safety precautions at the base made the airplanes he wished to see close up seem a million miles away, and likewise, aviation itself. When Martin first visited the New Garden Flying Field when he was 12 years old, he was turned away because he was considered too young to hang around airplanes. When they opened the Flight Connection nearly ten years ago, Martin and Dunn had two ambitions – to create a personalized program that is priced affordably and paid for lesson by lesson – and to open the doors to anyone who shares their same passion for flight. It’s not only seen at the Flight Connection, but at the annual Future Aviators Camp, which has become one of the most successful aviation camps for youngsters in the nation. It’s also seen at each air show held at the Flying Field every

Claire Mooney of Jennersville Hospital-Tower Health Q.: What is your healthcare background? A.: I’ve worked in healthcare for nearly two decades. I began my career as a surgical intensive care nurse, specializing in cardio-thoracic surgery and heart transplantation, and later served as a clinical coordinator for nursing units before moving into administration as a nurse manager for Reading Hospital. In 2016, I was afforded the opportunity to serve as the Senior Director of Nursing for the Critical Care and Medical Surgical departments within Reading Hospital. I am particularly excited that now, as part of Tower Health, we will conduct a Community Health Needs Assessment every three years. The six-acre property is surrounded by open fields and just big enough for a small home and plenty of room for the animals that are getting a second chance. There are regularly a couple of dozen dogs in kennels. There’s a separate room for puppies while they are given their inoculations, and evaluated for any diseases before being put up for adoption. Other dogs are given a pen to bounce around in, and they are all walked twice a day by a rotating staff of volunteers. “We have four paid part-time employees,” Merritt said. “Two people take care of the grounds and stables, and two work in the kennel. And we have a core of eight or 10 volunteers who are here every week.” Greenmore works with a local vet for all inoculations and medical evaluations. In their years of existence, every animal has been placed with a happy home, Merritt said, except a few “house dogs” who live there full-time. Lilly has taken to her role as the farm’s greeter and protector. She will stand on her hind legs and hug visitors around the neck with gentle affection. “Most of our personal dogs have had special needs, and they’ve just crawled their way into our hearts,” he said. Merritt said his parents and Julie’s parents were “corporate gypsies,” and Julie went to school for nursing in Allentown. As a lifetime equestrian, she had always been eager to find a property large enough for her horses and to take in animals who needed a second chance. In 2010, she found the

For Merritt, who still works as a management consultant, living in the midst of so much animal affection since he met Julia is endlessly rewarding. “It’s always fresh,” he said, smiling. “I’m a little bit like a dog in that respect. I live in the now.” There’s no time limit on how long a dog can stay at Greenmore, although Merritt said sometimes they will swap a dog with another no-kill shelter where, for some reason, the new arrival is usually adopted right away. “Julie says there’s a lid for every pot, and we work hard to find the perfect match for each dog,” Merritt said. But the dogs can also live out their days at Greenmore if necessary. At Greenmore, visitors can’t just drop in. Families are required to go online first to see photos of the dogs up for adoption, and fill out a request to visit. The visit is part of a thorough evaluation process to confirm that the dogs are going to good homes. There’s a fee required at the time of adoption that partially covers the costs of caring for the animals up to that point. “At this point, we’re sort of breaking even,” Merritt said, smiling. “We have the dogs that are six months or older spayed and neutered at the Chester County SPCA. We spend about $80,000 a year on vet bills. We rely on the fees and the kindness of our 44

donors. But the goal is finding good homes for good dogs. We socialize the dogs. We train them to walk on a leash, that sort of thing.” Merritt is proud of Greenmore’s record of success. “We’re humming along,” he said. “We get seven to 10 dogs a week coming in and going out. And we’ve managed to adopt out nearly every dog.” Greenmore Farm Animal Rescue is a 501c3 charity. Financial donations and adult volunteers are needed. n just one year, Zena Florist, LLC, in Toughkenamon has become a trusted place to find the best in traditional and modern flower arrangements for all occasions. Shop owner Maria Navarrete-Olvera provides everyday arrangements for birthdays, holidays, and any time to brighten a home with flowers. She also prepares sympathy arrangements and provides delivery in the surrounding area. Weddings and events are her specialties. “Working with the bride is one of my favorite things to do,” Navarrete-Olvera said. “I love taking their vision and overall feeling of their wedding and guiding them to the right floral combinations to bring it to reality.” Wedding planning takes special skills. “When meeting with the bride and groom for a wedding consultation, I make myself available, even on Sundays,” she said. “I happily provide my personal cellphone number to brides so that they can connect with me at any time, whenever an idea or concern pops into their mind.” Navarrete-Olvera can help clients work within their budgets, no matter what their price range. “There are times where certain items need to be taken out due to the budget, but I don’t turn away a bride if she only needs a few things,” she said. “I have had weddings where the centerpiece is not floral. That is why every event piece is unique and tailored to my client’s needs.” Owning a florist shop was a big move for NavarreteOlvera, who previously worked in banking. “I’m doing something I want to do, using my creativity, and working with my hands,” she said. “Flowers are beautiful. As I got into it more and more, I decided to take some formal training. After my very first class, I fell in love with it.” Navarrete-Olvera trained at Longwood Gardens, taking classes and working with area professionals to build her own expertise. As her skills grew, she was encouraged to take the step toward making this her new career. “One person in particular really pushed me to follow my dreams,” she said, referring to Laurie Szoke. “When she passed away, I just kept thinking of the things she was telling me -- to follow my dreams, life was short, and to do something that makes me happy. Now I’m working with what I love, the beauty of flowers, the connection with people, and using my hands and creativity to bring happiness to others.” 46

The connection between Navarrete-Olvera and Szoke remains strong. “After Laurie, my mentor, passed away I realized that life is short and decided to pursue my dream of owning a flower shop,” she said. “The name Zena is in honor of Laurie. Zena was one of her dogs that she loved very much.” High quality can be seen in all of the floral arrangements from Zena Florist. For the ultimate in freshness, most of her flowers are locally sourced from May through September, with Navarrete-Olvera picking them up personally from a local farm each week. For varieties that are not available locally, or are not in season, she uses reliable sources that have the highest quality for long-lasting blooms. “I love the modern, I love the creativity. I can always make the traditional bouquets, but I like working outside of the box,” Navarrete-Olvera said. “I love working with 2019 • Volume 2——

different materials. I’ve actually started to experiment with more sustainable materials that can be used instead of a vase that is plastic or glass -- making structures out of natural elements that can be used as the structure for the flowers.” Clients are also able to pick from some local gift items stocked at Zena Florist to add to arrangements. Navarrete-Olvera’s own handmade candles are available, along with natural skin care products, pain lotion, glass jewelry and art from local artists. Zena Florist has partnered with Avon Grove Charter School, Kennett High School and Unionville High School to give back a portion of proceeds from prom corsage, boutonniere or bouquet sales to help support the schools’ after-prom programs. Opened in April 2018, Zena Florist is already an award

winner, earning a WeddingWire Couples Choice Award for demonstrating excellence in quality, service, and professionalism within the wedding industry.
