I have heard many say that they cannot wait until we get back to “normal”. I want to suggest that normal may not be the place we want or need to be. Normal, in American English is “conforming with or constituting an accepted standard, model, or pattern; especially corresponding to the median or average.” I would say normal is not what I see in Southern Chester County. Rather, I see people who are exceptional, innovative, trend setting, and EXTRAORDINARY! I believe to face the opportunities that are before us we must continue to work together in an extraordinary way that causes the world to look once again at Southern Chester County as the pioneers of what is possible. |CONNECTIONS| A Message from the President Your Success Is Our Business Dear Members and Friends, It should come as no surprise that due to the pandemic, Chambers of Commerce across the Commonwealth and the country were heavily relied upon to lead, advocate, and provide much- needed resources.

From the beginning, SCCCC has led the way for our region and beyond. We realized pretty quickly that the crisis would not end in a couple of weeks or in a month, and so we partnered with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry, bringing critical support, a myriad of resources, and valuable information to our region. We worked alongside federal, state, and local elected officials so the Governor’s Cheryl B. Kuhn office and the White House heard us—and we were available to answer questions 24/7.

Chamber staff fielded countless questions, provided leadership and support to businesses and individuals, and offered viable options for every challenge that faced our communities. We held informative webinars, town halls and meetings, and we continued to network and connect. We were invited to participate on the Chester County Commissioners’ Business Task Force, ultimately bringing “Restore Chester County” to all who needed it. We partnered with local main street organizations, including Historic Kennett Square and Oxford Main Street offering our resources and support to their members. We are still doing all of these things in support of our region.

Now, when we think we have it covered, when we have mastered every virtual application that exists, when we are somewhat comfortable networking on a computer screen, and when we have learned the skills to lead-manage-cajole and politic all from our dining rooms, basements, guest rooms or home offices, we realize all of this was a preamble for the next step.

What is the next step? As we slowly enter the restore and renewal phase, the path forward begins to clear – but not without its challenges, and we are once again here for you. We are here to help guide you in your business, assist your employees, offer support to your Boards, and much more, as we move forward.

Main Street grou push forward Oxford and Kennett Square non-profits focus on helping downtowns remain vibrant despite coronavirus challenges

wo Southern Chester County Main Street organizations, maneuvering through the various COVID-19 issues presented to their downtowns, are finding that care and ingenuity are helping patrons to return.

“Staying safe, healthy … and open,” are the aims that Christianna Hannum defined for small businesses in Oxford.

As executive director of the non-profit Oxford Mainstreet, Inc., Hannum said the town’s businesses are meeting those goals while staying mindful of the state’s safety suggestions. Residents and fans of Oxford’s eateries have been out in force, for example, according to Hannum. “Our restaurants have outdoor seating and they’re packed all the time,” she said. In addition, “the shops are open; some of them are even staying open later hours,” during the Third Friday Late Night Shopping events.

But while the businesses are following the guidelines recommended by the Commonwealth, Hannum admits the pandemic is affecting the larger ambitions of OMI, which was formed more than 20 years ago to “promote and foster economic growth and stability within the Business Improvement District and surrounding area, while preserving Downtown Oxford’s rich historic and cultural identity.”

“It’s very hard to plan,” said Hannum, referring to the events and activities OMI presents that normally can bring hundreds or even thousands of attendees to this appealing, historic town. “First Friday [fun street events with different themes] have been cancelled until further notice.”

But Hannum said she’s very pleased about the recent hiring of Brian Dix as the Mainsteet manager. Dix attended Oxford Area schools, and comes to the position with experience in digital communications as well as video after both graduating from and working for York College. “We’re thrilled to have him,” she said.

Hannum is holding small celebrations for merchant anniversaries, and is planning to restart a newsletter that would serve the area. Also in the works is a fun, family-friendly activity – a Drive-in Movie Night. It would most likely take place in the parking lot of the Walmart Supercenter in Oxford Commons (on North Third Street, about a mile north of the borough center).

As for ongoing projects, erecting a new 50-person entertainment venue, The Shoebox Theatre, is continuing, Hannum said. “The Shoebox Theatre is moving along. We’ve raised $20,000 toward the finishing of its construction. But given the challenging time right now for fundraising, we feel like that’s a good start.” When completed, the Shoebox will screen second-run and arthouse films and host music performances, she said.

Hannum sees it as comparable to the Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville.

And the idea is to eventually build another, larger theater as part of a two-phase plan to bring more people downtown and have them spend time there. Of course, area shops and restaurants would benefit as a result.

What does Hannum want the community to be aware of regarding Oxford Mainstreet, Inc.?

“I want them to know … we’re here and we’re ready to help. If they’re interested in moving to, purchasing a business in or shopping downtown, we’re accessible to aid them in all their business, home or merchant needs.

“And for the community, I really want to stress that the town of Oxford is safe and mask-wearing and open for business. We really encourage people to come downtown and see all that Oxford has to share, because it’s a special place.”

Historic Kennett Square also dealing with challenges Very much like Hannum, Bo Wright, executive director of Historic Kennett Square is grappling with cancellations and loss of revenue in the wake of the coronavirus restrictions.

“The biggest hit for us was the Brewfest,” Wright said. In its 23rd year, the annual event brings in dozens of local and regional brewers to present their brews. It’s almost always a sell-out. But October 2020 was, of course, different from past Brewfests.

“Obviously, we couldn’t bring 3,000 people together for an in-person event, but we pivoted to what we called the Backyard Brewfest,” Wright said. “We talked to 48 different breweries from across the region [and] got them to offer kind of special beer for us.” They were packaged in two different cases with two dozen cans each -- the Kennett Case and the Brewfest Case -- and the purchasers were encouraged to enjoy the beers at home.

People apparently liked the idea. “We had a thousand cases to sell. We sold out in seven days,” he said. Wright doesn’t know the exact breakdown, but he believes anecdotally that the beer buyers were both people “who recognized how important [the Brewfest] is to HKS and to Kennett Square, and also a lot of people who want to drink good beer.”

The non-profit HKS describes itself as “bridging and connecting the public and private sectors to build a community where all participants benefit economically and socially through the diverse cultural, business, and social assets of the Kennett Square community.”

Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, the borough closes off the 100 block of East State Street to traffic, so there is enough room to social distance while dining or shopping. “This has been extremely successful, certainly over the last few months,” Wright said. “You go there on a Friday night and it’s very, very busy.

“We surveyed businesses to see what they wanted, and most wanted street closures, but not the businesses on West State Street.”

On the 100 block of West State, the HKS and volunteers installed a “parklet” – a small greenspace where parking spaces once were.

“It basically takes free parking and allows for outdoor dining for the coffee shops in the morning, then some restaurants in the evening,” Wright said. It’s set to stay in place until Nov. 21 or until the first significant snowfall.

Borough officials got behind the project, and while the parklet concept was novel to Kennett Square, globally, enthusiasts have been installing them for many years.

an annual September event that brings upwards of 100,000 fungus fans to the borough over a two-day period was “huge.” He said the group is working to replace some of that lost revenue once the holiday season rolls around. “Especially with visitors to Longwood Gardens,” who often come to nearby Kennett Square afterward to shop and eat a meal. The Longwood Gardens Christmas in Kennett event sells tickets to A Longwood Christmas at the Gardens and offers a free shuttle there and back to Kennett Square for ticketholders. Complimentary parking for participants is also included in the offer.

Wright said since his hiring earlier this year, he didn’t get to meet as many merchants as he wanted to because of COVID-19. His goal in 2021 is to do a better job of problem-solving as well as serving merchants. “We’re hoping to drive the conversation about what the community should look like and listening to what they want and then communicating that vision to the broader community.

“I think everyone’s biggest concern is these winter months. What happens with outdoor dining, and shopping

and that’s the next problem we want to solve. I would describe merchants as understandably concerned.”

Considering business closures, Wright said, “I think many small towns similar to Kennett Square across the county have seen a lot of stores close. I don’t know of any businesses in town that have closed directly from COVID. And the empty storefronts we do have in the main core downtown are currently being filled with long-term businesses. But obviously, as I said, the winter months are going to be a challenge.”

He added, “The big thing we’ve done over the past few months with early COVID hitting is that we distributed funds through the Small Business Response Fund. In a partnership with Square Roots Collective [a collection of social enterprises which have joined to advance the community toward an ecosystem in which all can thrive], we raised $276,000 to give away to more than 60 businesses as grants. The majority were to women- and minorityowned businesses. They were very flexible in terms of how businesses could use them.

“They were specific to what we called consumer-

placing businesses, as we felt they were the ones most directly impacted by COVID. They were businesses with a cash register where people are coming in for a specific business.”

Wright would like the community to know that HKS is broadening its mission. “We are an organization that was founded as a primarily Main Street organization responsible for revitalizing State Street. Going forward, we see ourselves as kind of a community-wide organization that’s trying to seek prosperity of the whole community. We want to see a beautiful and inclusive community develop. That’s what we’re focused on … making sure that the future growth of Kennett is inclusive of everybody and has something for everybody.”

of the biggest surprises had to be the economic uplift that came with the buzz around the Arts Alliance.

Suddenly, people had a new destination. They would start their evening at the Arts Alliance viewing a new exhibit or listening to some exciting, new music, then casually top off the night with a visit to the surrounding businesses and restaurants.

It quickly became a win-win situation for everyone. People that wouldn’t normally visit Oxford were now part of Oxford, with a family member exhibiting or performing.

And now the effect of art and music in the Oxford is visible everywhere. Murals and art adorn the streets, covering once blank walls or alley gates.

If Anthony Derrico, the assistant executive director of the Oxford Arts Alliance, has his way, there will be even more art, music and culture on the street and in the businesses. Derrico has watched the Alliance grow. He began his association with them in 2010 as a music instructor. The number of students coming for music instruction has grown from a handful of people to more than 150 students a week, and he has seen firsthand what the Alliance has done for the entire community.

Lessons are offered for youth, teens and adults.

Instruction on woodwinds, brass, strings and piano are available. Students are taught a wide range of musical styles including classical, rock, jazz, pop and more.

And some of those students are coming back as teachers. So not only is the Alliance a place to learn music and art, it is a place to learn how to teach those disciplines.

Students interested in art have been making connections with local artists, learning water color, sculpturing, ceramics and a plethora of painting mediums. This has translated into an income for some of those students.

Local boutiques such as Pickled Pickles sell the work of local artists affording them a supplemental income.

Derrico is energized by these emerging artists and has dedicated a new gallery space to showcase those talents.

“We recently had an exhibit from an impressive 11-year-old artist who seemed much older than her tender years, speaking eloquently about how

she achieved the texture in her painting,” Derrico said. “It was amazing to see an 11-year-old with that much confidence.”

Derrico says the Alliance has provided a place for people to feel at home and to give them a platform to showcase their talents. He also feels it is a way to cultivate the community through art.

“I just want to make sure everyone has a place to express themselves. We advocate for artists and musicians. We are perpetuating the skills they learn so they can go out and teach others,” he said.

Derrico feels that art and music transcends age, culture, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

“Everyone appreciates art and music and is elevated from participating,” he said.

Caitlin Daugherty is the Art Coordinator for the Oxford Arts Alliance. She graduated from Kutztown University with a degree in fine arts and a minor in psychology. She started as a volunteer and worked her way up to instructing students of her own through private lessons. She’s brought portfolio preparation to the alliance, while teaching classes, camps, and clubs.

The pandemic may have changed some of the activities for the time being, but it has not stopped the creativity. If anything, the staff is actively pursuing more virtual opportunities so the public can continue to be an active part of the Arts Alliance.

Longwood Gardens

By Marcella Peyre-Ferry Contributing Writer COVID-19 had made changes to our world, but beauty can still be found at Longwood Gardens.

As health and safety regulations forced shutdowns early in the pandemic, Longwood Gardens also closed on March 14. The Gardens are an important place to many people in the community, including its members, staff, and nearly 800 volunteers, who work at the site in a wide range of roles. The volunteer program had to be suspended, but people still wanted to keep in touch with their favorite place.

“It was important for us to stay engaged with our guests and community during our closure,” Director of Communications Patricia Evans said. “We had a number of ways in which we kept guests informed about what was happening in the Gardens, from blogs, to our social media channels, to additional content on our web site.”

During the period they were closed, a very limited staff were on site taking care of the plant collection and systems maintenance. “We had to make some difficult decisions to allocate resources,” Evans explained. For example, the Gardens removed much of the spring bulb display because the limited staff needed to focus on other plant care, and guests could not be onsite to enjoy the blooms.

When regulations began to relax, the Gardens reopened at a limited capacity to Members only on June 18. That was expanded on July 1, as they opened to the general public again at 35 percent capacity with new visiting and safety protocols in place, including contactless entry, social distancing, more frequent cleaning and sanitation, and mask wearing protocols in place for both staff and guests.

Some Longwood specialties also had to be cancelled including all on-site performing arts and educational programs as well as guided tours. “We had a terrific schedule of concerts, Fireworks and Fountains Shows, educational classes, and camp programs planned for the summer that all had to be canceled due to COVID,” Evans said.

Most of the indoor and outdoor gardens are now open, including the four-acre conservatory. Only the Indoor Children’s Garden and Conservatory Music Room remain closed at this time.

The very popular Illuminated Fountain Performances resumed and are being held at 8:15 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings through Oct. 31.

The Terrace Restaurant is open with outdoor seating and limited indoor seating. You may also purchase a picnic tote through the online ticketing system at least one day before your visit and pick it up at the Beer Garden.

Tickets and member reservations must be made in advance online at longwoodgardens.org before your visit to the gardens. Print your ticket at home or have it ready on your smartphone. Facemasks are required for everyone age 2 and older indoors and in outdoor public spaces unless you are able to maintain 6-foot distancing from others.

Instead of printed maps, use the easy mobile map or print at home. Anyone who may be ill is asked to stay home.

“It’s been wonderful to welcome guests back to Longwood,” Evans said. “We have 400 acres for guests to explore so there’s room to social distance,” Evans said. “Guests are enjoying the opportunity to be out and about again and to reconnect with nature and to see beauty, which is something I think everybody needs in their life, especially now.”

Currently featured at Longwood Gardens now through November 15 is the annual Chrysanthemum Festival. One of the highlights is Thousand Bloom Chrysanthemum, a single chrysanthemum plant grown to produce as many perfect blooms as possible.

Measuring 12 feet wide and nearly 10 feet tall, the amazing plant is grown for 18 months to reach its incredible size and bloom count of more than 1,500 perfect, uniform blooms. In addition, Longwood’s horticulturists have grown mums into unique three-dimensional forms, including shields, fans, cloud forms, and other shapes.

The Christmas display, A Longwood Christmas, will be on view November 20 through January 10. This the display celebrates the traditions of a Longwood Christmas-amazing trees dripping in ornaments, horticultural finery like only Longwood can

do--from living wreaths to thousands of poinsettias—and outside 500,000 lights create a magical display.

“Visiting during the holidays is a favorite tradition for many families in the community,” Evans said. “There is something for everyone in the family, from our firepits, to fountain shows, strolling musicians, to spectacular lights, it is both an indoor and outdoor experience.”

Some traditions have been put on hold for this year, including the concerts, choirs, and organ singalongs, but that will not dim the holiday spirit. Other traditions have been revised, such as the children’s trees, normally filled with decorations from local schools. This year, there will still be children’s trees, but with ornaments submitted by the families of Longwood Gardens members.

The Gardens are open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with extended hours until 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays through Oct. 31 for the Illuminated Fountain Performances at 8:15 p.m. For the holiday display beginning Nov. 20, the Gardens will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Days and hours are subject to change. How to choose an e-commerce platform in 2020

W

ith storefronts closed and capacity levels capped by executive order, there has never been a better time to explore e-commerce. There are so many options for the seemingly simple task of opening an online store. To eliminate any confusion surrounding the online, e-commerce world, I’ll explore some of those options, dive into the details, and share a few of my recommendations.

First, I want to dispel the marketing miracles that are touted around e-commerce. A website is much like a storefront, but one with no guaranteed foot traffic, no surrounding community, and no sign visible from the street. An e-commerce site doesn’t create sales on its own, which means marketing efforts still need to bring people into the store. As an experienced business, you have a number of advantages over a new business. You have an audience and hopefully, a way to get in touch with them. You have products and processes. You have relationships with customers, supplies, and partners like the Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce. Most importantly, you have a trusted brand and reputation. All of those assets will help your e-commerce presence thrive.

The most overwhelming decision when creating an e-commerce site is how to build it. There are many systems, softwares, and businesses that exist just to help you sell

your products and services online, but not all of them will be a good fit. The three main categories of options to explore are platforms, builders, and self-hosted. I’d like to share my top recommendations for each one, what they do well, what they do poorly, and what might be the best for you.

The first type of e-commerce options is the platform, such as Amazon, eBay, or Etsy. I call these “platforms” because they are systems with existing customer bases that you can choose to opt-in to. For most types of products, becoming a thirdparty seller on Amazon is a fairly easy and straightforward process.

These platforms certainly take their cut of your sales, though. For example, Amazon’s “referral fee” can range from 6 percent to 20 percent, depending on the product category. However, you’re not just paying for the right to sell on the platform. You’re really paying for exposure to the audience of people that will go straight to Amazon for whatever they need. The best way to treat these platforms is similar to how you treat search engines. According to the “State of Amazon 2016” report from retail experience firm Bloomreach, 55 percent of people surveyed chose Amazon as the starting point whenever they are searching for a product. This built-in audience can be extremely valuable.

Your marketing efforts should be focused on optimizing your Amazon store and product listing for the search terms people are using on the platform. The same advice is

applicable for Etsy and eBay, making them the best choice if your target market fits their audience. For the majority of product-based businesses, Amazon is the dominant platform option.

The second type of e-commerce options is the builder.

Builders are software systems that make it very easy to build a website with a store, add products, manage orders, and integrate with various sales channels. Many website builders, including Squarespace and Wix, have e-commerce options. However, I would recommend the e-commerce builder industry giant, Shopify. Shopify makes it extremely easy to pick a template, add a few products, and start selling online. Simple setups can be done in a week (or very long weekend), while more complex stores with customization might take a few weeks to completely build out. Support is available through the builder itself and through an engaged community. Pricing is pretty fair too, with a monthly subscription cost and a reasonable credit card transaction fee (2.9% + $0.30) per purchase. There are a few downsides though. For one, if you choose not to use Shopify’s payment processor— perhaps to link in your own merchant account or due to different international needs—you will pay an additional 2 percent per transaction. The most serious disadvantage is customization. Shopify will work for 80 percent of simple retail businesses, but once you need a more complex shopping experience, such as detailed licensing handling, heavily branded or intricate design, or other custom features, you’ll find that building into the Shopify experience requires serious development chops and may not be the most cost-effective route. You may also find yourself with two websites, one that promotes the retail business or blog and one that is the store. In fact, I recommend Shopify when the store’s requirements are: simple, low budget, fast turnaround, and the client is fine with a semi-templated experience. For many Shopify builds, I would recommend hiring a designer instead of a developer because the goal should be to pick a theme that fits your store’s needs and then create beautiful images to fill in that template.

The last option is the self-hosted e-commerce website.

Self-hosted sites are wholly owned by you, and with that comes a ton of freedom and flexibility, as well as responsibility. Self-hosted options are abundant and can be heavily specialized. For example, working within the WordPress ecosystem, Tickera can create a full event ticketing experience, Easy Digital Downloads can sell memberships, ebooks, and other downloadable items, and WooCommerce is a fully-featured e-commerce experience.

ordering or shopping experiences, and integration with multiple softwares or vendors, I recommend WooCommerce.

WooCommerce powers just under 30 percent of all stores online, is open source, and is fully customizable. If you see it online and want to recreate it, WooCommerce can do it.

That means you can create any workflow for fulfillment, use your own payment processor, have the store look however you want it to, and more.. However, with that plethora of options comes tradeoffs. Maintenance of the software is on your shoulders, the design and build process will take months, and the upfront development cost will be the highest of the three options.

There are, of course, many more facets to running an online business, including shipping, fulfillment, fraud management, and most importantly (in my humble opinion) marketing. As an existing business exploring e-commerce, you bring assets to the table that improve your store’s success. Once your store is up and running, leverage your existing customers, your partnerships, such as the one with the SCCC, and spread the news. In these COVID-19 times, I’m sure your customers will be happy to hear from you and support your digital store as it grows into the

new year and beyond.

Farming industry supported by Chester County Agricultural Development Council

T

he mission of the Chester County Agricultural Development Council (Ag Council) is to raise awareness of the economic impact of the local farming industry and promote excellence in farming. Their outreach assists farmers in the county market their businesses, helps create an environment to attract new farmers, and informs residents and municipal officials about the importance of local agriculture. They also partner with other organizations through their Ag Task Force to address agricultural issues and collaboratively support the industry.

The economic impact of Chester County’s agricultural industry is very strong, ranking second among all 67 Pennsylvania counties (and ranking 53rd out of over 3,000 counties in the U.S.) in the total value of agricultural products sold. Annual sales exceed $700,000,000. In addition, Chester County ranks 18th in the U.S. in value of

agricultural products sold per acre of land in farms with a value per acre of $4,733.00.

“I don’t think people really understand how much agriculture is in Chester County, or the impact the industry has on our local economy,” explained Hillary Krummrich, the director of the Ag Council. “People are really shocked when they learn that Chester County is second in production value only to Lancaster County, a place that most of us readily think of as ‘agricultural.’ Many residents have heard that Kennett Square is the mushroom capital of the world, they take their kids to pick pumpkins or apples, they visit wineries and they see field crops and horses when they drive around, but they do not understand what that equates to in terms of agricultural production or economic impact.”

Chester County is indeed the place where about half of the nation’s mushrooms are grown and is a top ranking Pennsylvania county for dairy and field crop production. But the industry is incredibly diverse, with a lot of specialty crop production such as beef, poultry, eggs,

artisan cheese, orchards, vineyards, produce, Christmas tree and nursery production. In addition, Chester County is home to a world-class equine community.

Farmers here have options for what and how they want to grow. Some producers sell on the commodity markets and others choose to sell directly to consumers.

There are significant markets in this region with high-population areas like New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington D.C. To help market farmers that sell direct, the Ag Council annually publishes their popular Guide to Local Farm Products which is available online as well as paper copies. The farm guide helps residents find local farm products of all kinds including honey, dairy products, meats, wine, mushrooms and even fiber. The guide also includes a section that tells readers when certain agricultural events will take place to encourage attendance and connectivity.

easy sell because we have so many farmers that offer entertaining ways for people to engage with agriculture. It could be getting lost in a corn maze in the fall, or enjoying delicious, farm-made ice cream in the summer. Families picking apples and pumpkins, or wine tasting with your friends,” said Krummrich. All of these things can provide additional income to farmers, as well as provide entertainment for people.

But it is not all about special events or activities. She noted, “The thing about agriculture is we are all a part of it. Every single day. Even if we don’t grow things ourselves, we eat, we rely upon it for fiber and fuel. Farming impacts us in a million ways.”

In the early days of the pandemic, people were reminded of the importance of agriculture, especially when it was difficult to find eggs, milk and meat in the grocery stores due to supply chain interruptions. The Ag Council’s ongoing outreach efforts focused on local producers who were selling those hard-to-find items. Krummrich said, “Our job now is to encourage consumers to continue to buy local even if those products are again available in the grocery stores. We know it may mean a second trip for people to stop at a farm, but we hope the trade-off is in the taste, freshness and support of our local farmers.”

She added, “It’s easy to fall in love with the industry. I am in awe of the farmers I meet. They are amazing people

with fascinating stories. I could never do what they do, I’m not cut out for it, but I am incredibly grateful to those who do. Farmers have to be everything—business people, veterinarians, meteorologists, mechanics, carpenters, etc.”

Working with the Ag Council has provided Krummrich with opportunities to see the industry up close in a way that few people get these days. “I’ve seen amazing things on this job. One situation in particular will stay with me always. I watched veteran farmers work diligently to get a newborn calf that would not nurse take to its mother. They must have tried ten different things for at least 30 minutes. But they didn’t give up. And even though they had been working with cows for decades, when they got that calf to nurse, you could see the pride and devotion on their faces. They were so determined and were not going to give up. They were making sure that animal was going to live. It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen.”

Ideas such as the Oxford caravan to support this community’s small businesses by rallying the troops to caravan, visit and shop has been in replicated in several other communities in the tri state area. This is real business leadership that makes things happen. The virtual tip jar was another great solution to pay it forward for employees of businesses in small town USA. The “Open for Business” List highlighting who was open during the pandemic was another great SCCCC first that brought attention to the need to support our neighbors. Last but not least, seeing businesses partner for sustainability has been a great inspiration. The Good News Friday feature has been shared throughout the region and beyond and gives inspiration to businesses and organizations working over and above as well as for those in need.

As a member of the SCCCC, we provided educational resources at no charge to members. This helped us better connect with new prospects, and we expanded our business, thanks to the chamber.

So soon after closing we launched Our Gardens Your Home, an online, curated selection of fun ways to experience the best of Longwood from home.

Weekly emails full of stunning imagery and videos of what’s in bloom, access to online education and activities for all ages, interview with staff, and a chance to relive or experience for the first-time special moments from our performing arts. Even as we welcome guests back to our Gardens, we are continuing to convert many of our inperson classes and events into engaging online experiences.

We are thankful for our membership to the SCCCC and the incredible value it provides. The Chamber has been a constant source of timely and important information throughout the pandemic and has been a strong advocate for businesses in our region.

Students from southern Chester County high schools have the option of attending TCHS through either a hybrid in-person or virtual model to ensure inclusive programming for all students. As a member of the Chamber, TCHS has monitored the impact of COVID-19 on local business and industry to help students develop the skills necessary to be successful in the postCOVID-19 workforce.

The system maximizes communication no matter where you are located as long as you have an internet connection. We are currently looking to upgrade the phones to include video, thus eliminating the use of additional software or outside resources.

The American Mushroom Institute has helped advocate for the mushroom industry since 1955

M

ushroom growing is a big part of life in southeastern Pennsylvania, impacting the economy, the environment and, of course, dining. Helping advocate for the mushroom industry since 1955 is the American Mushroom Institute (AMI).

Based in Avondale, AMI is a national trade organization for U.S. mushroom growers and suppliers to the industry. AMI was established to provide a unified presence and effective representation for its members across the various legislative and regulatory agencies on the federal, start and local levels, plus they provide networking opportunities and direct contact with industry influencers.

“We take on the mushroom industry’s concerns and we address them in a manner that benefits our members,” communications director Lori Harrison said. “Additionally, we engage in communications and education efforts with various audiences.”

AMI also works in cooperation with the Mushroom Council, an arm of the industry that helps promote fresh mushroom consumption.

“We work in support and conjunction with the Council in various campaigns and initiatives,” Harrison said.

Every mushroom is harvested by hand so one of the biggest concerns for mushroom growers is the availability of consistent, reliable labor. The industry employs nearly 8,600 people in southeastern Pennsylvania. Workers are predominantly from South America and particularly Mexico.

“Without harvesters it’s really hard to get the mushrooms to where they need to go,” Harrison explained.

AMI has members from all across the United States, with Pennsylvania the home of the majority of mushroom-growing operations. Nearly sixty percent of mushroom production occurs in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

About 900 million pounds of mushrooms are produced each year, with most of those being white and brown button mushrooms. Specialty varieties make up the remainder of the crop.

The mushroom industry in the biggest cash crop in Pennsylvania, contributing over $1 billion to the local economy.

While many industries, including the mushroom industry, have been hit hard by COVID-19, mushrooms continue to see steady

increases in demand, especially at retail. As people have turned to cooking at home, they have turned to the versatile mushroom as one of their favorite ingredients.

“Mushroom consumption has been steadily increasing over the years. What we’re finding is that because more people are cooking at home, sales at retail have remained strong,” Harrison said. “Mushrooms are an item that people buy repeatedly. They work well with any kind of meal, breakfast, lunch or dinner.”

There are many different varieties of mushrooms that home cooks can use to mimic restaurant dishes.

“Most people start eating white button mushrooms or the crimini, which is the brown button mushroom. From there, they’ll often branch out and try Oyster or Shiitake mushrooms,” Harrison said.

Mushrooms are also popular because they fit very well in any kind of diet plan. “It doesn’t matter if you’re on the Mediterranean diet, low-fat, low-carb, or keto. Mushrooms have a lot of the good stuff—vitamins and minerals, and not much of the bad stuff. They have no fat, they are low in calories, low in salt,” Harrison said. “You can throw them into eggs, you can toss them in a salad, you can saute them on a chicken breast - they work with a lot of those diet

items, too.”

Mushroom growing is a sustainable form of agriculture, using materials that are byproducts of other types of farming, such as straw and hay, animal waste and cocoa husks.

Once composted, this material becomes the growing medium for the mushrooms. After it has been used, the spent mushroom soil can be used again as a planting medium for residential and agricultural purposes, or even as a medium for green roofs.

“They’re really sustainable. Mushroom growers are the original recyclers. They take in other things that other industries do not need any more.” Harrison said.

It takes just two gallons of water to grow a pound of mushrooms. The energy footprint for growing mushrooms is also low. Growing one pound of mushrooms requires just one kilowatt hour of electricity – about the same amount of power as running a coffeemaker for one hour. The carbon footprint for mushroom growing is also low. Growing one pound of mushrooms generates .7 pounds of CO2. By comparison, using one gallon of fuel emits 20 pounds of CO2.

During COVID-19, ‘Restore Chester County’ provides businesses with paths forward

A

s 2019 ended and the calendar flipped to 2020, the economy of Chester County was, to use a phrase often applied during times of financial upswings, “booming.”

Through vision, partnerships and opportunity, the county had created a robust economy that had the lowest unemployment rate of any county in Pennsylvania. The broad paintbrush of the county’s VISTA2025 initiative was continuing to apply rapid strokes to a canvas of long-term public and private economic strategies, and the working wheels of its many economy-based organizations -- including the South4rn Chester County Chamber of Commerce – were all in perfect spin.

In short, every stakeholder whose imprint was being permanently affixed was on board – and across the board, and the economic future of Chester County was all systems go for 2020…until it wasn’t.

In rapid response to the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic in March, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf and State Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine instituted a series of regulatory controls aimed at curbing the spread of the virus in the state that included “Stay at Home” orders and a “Red-Yellow-Green” phase of reopening. Practically overnight, shop owners, restaurants and service-oriented stores went from thriving to barely surviving, with no clear path forward, and while these efforts were done to better assure the health and safety of all Pennsylvanians, their impact was felt by businesses throughout the commonwealth and the county.

For those who were fearful that the pandemic would wipe away their businesses and livelihood, help soon arrived in the form of a program known as Restore Chester County, developed by county commissioners Marian Moskowitz, Michelle Kichline, Josh Maxwell, as well as a galvanized and committed consortium of leaders representing several economic sectors throughout the county.

by, we have remained mindful of, and concerned about the evolving and increasing needs of the Chester County community,” Moskowitz said when introducing the program. “In addition to our physical health, COVID-19 has attacked our mental, our emotional and our economic health. So while we have been following the Governor’s stay at home order, and while we do recognize that drastic measures needed to be taken to slow the spread of coronavirus, we have also been focused on the best way to get Chester County quickly, but safely, up and running again.”

Creation of a business task force and a plan for recovery Led by Chester County Planning Commission Executive Director Brian O’Leary, the county’s COVID-19 Business Task Force represents a Who’s Who of leadership that touches nearly every county industry. Its core team includes representatives from the county’s Economic Development Council, members of the Economic Cabinet, the Agricultural Development Council, the Association of Township Officials, leaders from county business chambers, the county’s Conference & Visitors’ Bureau, the Department of Community Development, the county’s Planning Commission, and members of the Municipal Managers Consortium and the Chester County Intermediate Unit.

The Task Force has divided its plan for the county’s economic recovery into two phases: Phase 1: The economic recovery plan focuses on shortterm strategies for the 21 industry sectors identified on the Restore Chester County website. Industry leaders from each of those sectors have identified short-term steps needed to stabilize businesses and the economy in Chester County.

Plans for the Phase 1 recovery also include a survey of businesses and organizations addressing current issues and concerns, as well as longer-term issues including impacts of on-going national trends on businesses and plans for the future. Results of the survey, combined with roundtable talks with the 21 industry sector leaders, have helped to generate the list of short term actions needed to stabilize the county’s economy.

Phase 2: As part of a broader long-term recovery plan, Phase 2 has addressed the overall recovery from the economic impacts of COVID-19, and how the county can further strengthen its economic viability in the future.

Continuing to follow the strategies of VISTA 2025, the task force has been working with two of the resources that helped create the economic plan -- 4ward Planning and TIP Strategies.

“Our COVID-19 Business Task Force took action early-on in this pandemic to prepare our businesses and our residents for the re-opening phase, which came into effect in June,” Moskowitiz said. “As we continue to support our business community, it is time to focus on the next step – repairing what has been lost by businesses, helping them to continue to weather the storm so that we can move forward to grow.”

The COVID-19 Business Task Force is also supported by an advisory committee will consist of organizations that represent and interact with the many industries in Chester County, and will be of varying sizes from across the whole of the county. Industries that will be represented include agricultural, bio/pharma, breweries and distilleries, childcare, conservation/environment/open space, construction, finance, gig economy workers, hospitals, human services, legal, lodging, long-term care, manufacturing, municipalities, non-profits, real estate, retail, restaurants and food service, schools and universities, technology, tourism and transportation.

Working with state and local health departments, businesses, municipalities, schools, non-profits, places of worship and residents, Restore Chester County has created the Business & Org Toolkit, a guide for businesses and organizations throughout the county to learn more about the COVID-19 reopening process, and track down the most up-to-date federal, state and county guidelines being developed by local health departments, businesses and municipalities.

The goal for us all: To feel confident and safe as we plan to return to Chester County’s quality of place, and to navigate the new guidelines necessary to do Over the last several months, Restore Chester County has also sponsored several virtual workshops and webinars that have invited experts in their fields to share their knowledge.

Events have included “Building Consumer Confidence,” “Preparing County Businesses to Re-Open,” “Energizing Business During COVID-19,” and “Employment and Training Opportunities during COVID-19,” as well as seminars geared specifically to restaurant owners who have been hurt financially during the pandemic.

A

ward-winning production company Rocky Pictures departed New York City in 2018 to put down local roots in Southern Chester County. During the pandemic, owner Peter Fitzgerald has adapted to the new circumstances that have caused businesses big and small to rethink their advertising strategies.

Fitzgerald is the founder, producer, and creative force behind Rocky Pictures.

The company name recalls the nickname “Rocky” his grandfather gave him during childhood. Grandfather and grandson traveled, explored, and experienced life in a way that shaped Fitzgerald into the creative, enthusiastic, and family-minded person he is today.

“During the Apollo mission when Alan Bean had an issue swapping the nuclear core powering the spaceship, he radioed down to earth and asked to speak with my

grandfather who resolved the issue for him. And yet, despite all of my grandfather’s achievements in nuclear energy, space exploration, and geology, despite all the accolades throughout his career – his most amazing quality was his ability to tell stories that inspire and motivate action,” Fitzgerald said.

Fitzgerald has followed in that tradition of storytelling, communicating for his clients through film. “When I started out in New York City, a lot of what I did was international advertising campaigns for Fortune 500 companies. We specialized in automobiles, beauty, and fashion campaigns” he said.

As a producer, Fitzgerald is probably best known for a two-minute Super Bowl commercial in 2011 for the Chrysler 300, which featured Eminem and iconic images of Detroit. It earned him both an Emmy and the Cannes Gold Lion Award for best television commercial of the year.

“The United States was in a recession, and one of the hardest hit industries was the auto industry,” Fitzgerald said. “It was a campaign that celebrated the people and the story of Detroit. Since then I’ve tried to bring that same sort of creativity, spark and storytelling to all of my clients.”

In 2018, Fitzgerald and his wife Adriana started thinking about raising a family and turned to Fitzgerald’s own roots in Chester County. “I’m a family person. I can’t believe I lasted in New York City as long as I did.” Fitzgerald said.

Alongside Rocky Pictures, the family also runs Bee Our Guest, an innovative company producing beeswax food wraps that offer an alternative to single-use plastic. The antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties of beeswax keep food fresh for longer. Because the wraps are reusable for a year or more, they simultaneously reduce food waste and single use plastic.

The business was inspired by the couple’s honeymoon trip to Australia where they challenged themselves to not use single use plastic during their seven-week stay. “Singleuse plastic is a thing people reach for out of convenience.

With planning you can work around it,” Fitzgerald said.

“This is a way to introduce a reusable material that is completely natural, completely organic, you can compost it in your garden after a year. Or bring it back to us at the farmers market, and we will put fresh beeswax on it, continuing the sustainability of the product for another year or longer.”

Fitzgerald is now uniquely able to see advertising as a necessity for businesses and organizations of all sizes. “As a small business owner making sustainable, locally sourced products, and with my experience as an executive producer, I understand the ever-changing needs facing small businesses during a pandemic. I’d love to chat about how a piece of content can take your company to a new level as far as getting out there and finding new people to engage with,” he said.

“I realized I want to continue working with companies that I believe in, small businesses like myself that truly support local community; that celebrate the things that I believe are most important in life – education, equality and our environment. If we can find a way to integrate these values into our local and global business community and systems, what a world this could be.”

The pandemic has made it difficult for small businesses to make short-term and long-term projections and therefore many advertisers saw a big pullback in ad spending for the first half of the year.

“The challenge for all of us is to rethink what we do. How

do small businesses and non-profit organizations continue connecting with their clients and supporters? We still need community engagement – perhaps now more than ever.

How do you reach out to your customers to let them know you’re safely open for business?” Fitzgerald said.

Recently Rocky Pictures took on a different kind of video production for the Stroud Water Research Center. Normally, the Stroud Water Research Center would be holding their annual fundraising event at Longwood Gardens, but this year the event is being done virtually. For the Zoom event, on Sept. 22, Rocky Pictures prepared the pre-recorded content, using a much smaller film crew than a typical commercial.

“My goal would be to continue working with non-profits and small businesses that are looking to re-envision their business mode; and the way they connect to customers. I think the number one way to do that is through a powerful storytelling, quality products and service, and community engagement,” Fitzgerald said.
