Chairman’s Welcome
Dear SCCCC Members and Friends,
It seems like just yesterday that I was writing the Chairman’s welcome for the Spring edition of Connections, and here it is the end of August, and we are two-thirds of the way through the year! Southern Chester County continues to grow and thrive and remains a place where people want to live, work, and play. Our region continues to offer a distinctly favorable business climate that stimulates economic development and business growth. As we move through this everchanging business landscape, our Chamber remains committed to supporting that development and growth so everyone in our communities can succeed.
The Chamber exists for one purpose – to serve our members. At every monthly Board meeting, we approve new members and spend time talking about them, getting to know their businesses and needs, and start to set the framework for what that service looks like. Getting to know our new members is the first step in what we hope becomes a lasting relationship with benefits to both Member and the Chamber.
When we do that well, when value is found by members and added by the Chamber, we can celebrate the relationship we have had with long-time members like we are in this publication. These members are our friends, our neighbors, and staples of our community. They each have a long history of serving the needs of our community and we are honored to have had the opportunity to be their Chamber over the last 50 years.
For all members, both brand new, longstanding, and all in between, I want to thank you for being the reason for what we do best - listen and support you to the highest degree possible. As always, we welcome your participation in one of our many standing committees as we strive to reach this goal. I again want to thank our leadership on the Board of Directors and the Chamber Staff for their hard work and dedication as we continue to serve you all.

Shining a Spotlight one customer at a time
When Ben Beiler began his real estate career with Jim Arnold in the white building at the intersection of Route 1 and 41 in the early 1970s, they had a handful of agents and an aspiration to grow the organization—one customer at a time.
Today, Beiler-Campbell Realtors is owned and led by Anthony Beiler and Brian Campbell, and is celebrating its 50th anniversary as one of the leading real estate companies in Southern Chester County and Lancaster County.
In this edition of CONNECTIONS, the Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce is shining a spotlight on some of the members celebrating milestone anniversaries in 2023. Several, like Beiler-Campbell Realtors, are still going strong at 50 years, and if there is a common denominator for all the organizations, it might be that the leaders focused on serving one customer at a time.
That is certainly the case for Fenstermacher & Company, PC, which is also celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Fenstermacher & Company, PC was founded a half-century ago when William C. “Bill” Fenstermacher Jr. acquired an existing accounting practice in Kennett Square Borough after having worked at a national accounting firm and as controller at a local mushroom company. Ellen, Bill’s wife, was also a partner in the firm at the time. His son Chad, a graduate of the University of Delaware, entered the firm in 2000. This organization is also built on providing quality service to each customer.
Kendal-Crosslands Communities is celebrating 50 years in 2023 as well. Kendal-Crosslands Communities is a notfor-profit LifePlan community that offers a wide variety of services to ensure that each resident can live their best life. They provide a range of living options, including independent living, personal care, skilled nursing, memory support, and home care services.
This year, Univest Bank and Trust Co. is commemorating 147 years of tradition, integrity and excellence. Throughout its history – from the time Union National Bank became Souderton’s first banking institution in 1876 to 2002 when the name was changed to Univest Bank and Trust Co. and continuing today -- Univest has been built by the power of its relationships, forged from a diversity of customers, communities, employees and shareholders.
Headquartered in Souderton, Pa., Univest operates 37 financial centers throughout Philadelphia and Chester, Bucks, Delaware, Lancaster, Lehigh and Montgomery counties.
Considering the infinite array of figures an accountant might work with, one number has special significance to this Newark, DE-based organization. For Whisman Giordano and Associates, that number is 50 – the years this highly regarded CPA and business consulting firm has been serving Delaware and neighboring regions.
The accounting firm was started by James Whisman in 1973, with Joseph A. Giordano joining the business as a partner about 20 years later. Whisman Giordano continued to expand its services over the decades until it became the firm it is today, with about 30 employees offering a full complement of business financial expertise, including accounting, auditing, bookkeeping, tax, and business advisory services. The elder Giordano is CEO; son Joseph V. Giordano is president and managing director; Lisa DeRose is COO as well as director and chair of the Tax Committee, with Julie Morgan as director and chair of the Audit and Accounting Committee.
Fifty is a significant number for LCH in 2023 as well— the Southern Chester County organization is celebrating its 50th anniversary of providing accessible, integrated, and equitable health care for everyone, regardless of the ability of a person to pay. Over the years, LCH added physicians and dental services to support the community. In 2016 LCH began expanding from Kennett to Oxford, and in 2018 expanded again with additional health care services in Jennersville.
This year, the CPA firm of Belfint, Lyons & Shuman, P.A. celebrates a century of public accounting. One thing that has remained the same over their 100-year history is the CPA firm’s emphasis on building relationships. Like so many other organizations that reach these impressive milestone anniversaries, one key to success for Belfint, Lyones & Shuman is making sure that the focus is on providing good service to one customer at a time.
We’re delighted to share some of these success stories with you in this edition of CONNECTIONS and we look forward to bringing you more stories like this in future editions.
A Message from the President
Dear Members and Friends,
I like to begin my “CONNECTIONS” message with a favorite quote:
“Sometimes those who give the most are the ones with the least to spare.”
– Mike MclntyreAs so many nonprofits can attest, our Chamber of Commerce can also relate to the message gained from this quote. As a 501c6 civic nonprofit organization, our budget does not allow us to provide the scholarships we do each year. However, thanks to support from Circle Partners, golf event sponsors, and golfers, each year we can present these critically important scholarships to local high school students.
For more than twenty years, the Chamber has proudly presented monetary awards to graduating seniors from each of the high schools in the Chamber’s Service Area: Avon Grove, Avon Grove Charter, Chester County Technical College High School (TCHS) Pennock’s Bridge Campus, Kennett, and Unionville. We proudly invited Avon Grove Charter in 2023, and, TCHS in 2020.
In addition, each year three (3) monetary sponsorships are awarded to rising sophomores and juniors to attend PFEW – Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week, a program of Foundation For Free Enterprise Education (FFFEE) – “Preparing Youth For Future Success”.
For the last 10 years, the Chamber has invited our scholarship recipients, along with a family member, to attend the annual Scholarship Dinner, where scholarship recipients are invited to speak – and – a professional photo is taken and promoted on the cover of our magazine, our website, and more.
With this in mind, we take you to the cover of this issue where you will see the photo of four of this year’s recipients who attended
the Scholarship Dinner on August 14th at Hartefeld National. Also in the photo are Tim Moore (Constellation Energy), our 2022 Chairman & the event’s Title Sponsor, Melissa Dietrich (Longwood Gardens), Board Member and Secretary and the event’s Scholarship Host Sponsor, and me. We are proud of the accomplishments of our scholarship recipients and look forward to continuing this important community tradition.
As our organization continues to be a driving force for those in need, it brings me back full circle to Mike McIntyre’s quote – and the knowledge that if there is a will, there is a way – and the Southern Chester County Chamber will find it.
We go the extra mile for our members, so stay connected and contact me if you need support.
Best regards,
Cheryl B. Kuhn, IOM President & CEO Your Success Is Our Business Cheryl B. Kuhn, IOMKendal-Crosslands Communities
Celebrating 50 years this year, Kendal-Crosslands Communities offers a wide variety of services to ensure that each resident can live their best life
Kendal-Crosslands Communities is a not-for-profit LifePlan community that offers a wide variety of services to ensure that each resident can live their best life. They provide a range of living options, including independent living, personal care, skilled nursing, memory support, and home care services. With many different living accommodations to choose from, they cater to residents of all activity levels and lifestyle preferences. The community offers unique amenities such as a wellness center, aquatic therapy, and a resident care clinic, an outdoor pool, library, painting studio, wood shop, putting green, community gardens, and other spaces for recreational activities.
Since its inception, a hallmark of Kendal-Crosslands Communities has been its intention that independent living residents are responsible for their social, cultural, spiritual, intellectual, and recreational lives. Immediately upon its opening, the Residents Association was established, which organized residents’ committees. These committees are responsible for coordinating community activities. This practice has remained a differentiator that consistently draws

prospective residents from across the country. Residents at Kendal-Crosslands Communities create, coordinate, and manage the community environment and programs that are most meaningful to them. Many of today’s resident committees and groups date back to 1973. Today, resident committees have established a vast number of programs, groups, and activities in which residents can participate. These include wellness programs such as water aerobics, strength training, pickleball, and mindfulness classes; special interest groups like pottery, book clubs, photography,

and weaving; entertainment activities such as choral groups, film groups, and theater outings; and recreational activities like chess, poker, floral arranging, fishing and so much more.
Chester County serves as an ideal backdrop for KendalCrosslands Communities, rooted in Quaker values and history. The Board of Managers of Friends Hall, a Quakersponsored nursing home in West Chester that played a critical role in the birth of Kendal-Crosslands Communities, conducted surveys in the 1960s that demonstrated that a retirement community which offered independent living housing, community facilities and nursing care all on one campus would be welcomed in Chester County. A site-search group had investigated and rejected several possibilities for a site location when a beautiful, protected 77-acre property outside Kennett Square next to Longwood Gardens-owned land was found.
Sprawling across 500 acres outside of Kennett Square, the campuses at Kendal-Crosslands Communities feature stunning rolling hills, wooded trails, green meadows, vegetable and flower gardens and endless sources of natural beauty. Since the community’s inception, they have remained dedicated to sustaining the natural environment of Chester County and serve as active stewards of its resources. KendalCrosslands Communities boasts an accredited arboretum,

is a Certified Wildlife Habitat site designated by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), and features miles of hiking trails.
Over the last 50 years, the campuses have expanded to include many new cottages and apartments, along with numerous renovations.
In addition to renovated common areas, like dining spaces and auditoriums, the health center at Crosslands was completely renovated, and took on a state-of-the-art household model. Currently, the Kendal at Longwood Health Center is undergoing a total redesign, embracing Montessori practices. Two years ago, a work group of staff members, residents, and board members gathered to listen, share a vision and ideas, and engage with one another in a collaborative process to redesign the center. This new design of their Resident Medical Clinic, Personal Care, Skilled Nursing, and Rehab spaces will integrate an environment where
community, nature, and care meet. They envision a center that will continue to integrate their community, provide comfortable and engaging spaces, and ignite the passion of residents and staff in a new environment naturally driven toward achieving a healthy community. They look forward to transforming the health center into spaces that will continue to connect residents with others, provide authentic expressions of self, comfort, and care while engaging people as individuals. The new spaces will integrate an environment where community, nature, and care meet.
Additionally, Kendal-Crosslands Communities has embraced changing and new technologies and stayed ahead of new regulations to continue providing a forwardthinking, industry-leading community that continually evolves to meet the needs of its residents.
Kendal-Crosslands Communities has recognized a pressing need for their unique offerings in the region. As the population ages and individuals seek an environment that supports graceful aging, our communities have emerged as a solution. The Chester County region, with its rich history

and long-standing roots, deserves a place where seniors can continue to lead fulfilling lives while receiving the care and support that they need. Particularly, Chester County’s Quaker heritage places Kendal-Crosslands Communities at the intersection of historical values and contemporary life, allowing the communities to provide a fulfilling senior living experience that draws on tradition while embracing the evolving needs of today. The facilities enhance the quality of life for seniors in Chester County by providing opportunities for residents to thrive in their later years. By offering a range of housing options and care levels within a welcoming community, we aim to meet the growing demand for enriching and supportive senior living experiences that align with the values of the region.
As a leader in providing services for older adults, the KendalCrosslands Communities looks forward to the next 50 years, being an active member of the local community and the field of aging, striving to help all people live their best life.
Being part of community is key for Kennett Square accounting firm
Fenstermacher & Co. celebrating 50 years serving area businesses, individuals
By Natalie Smith Contributing WriterWhat does it take for a business to be successful for decades? Chad Fenstermacher could tell you, as the CPA firm started by his father is marking 50 years of outstanding service to the Kennett Square community and beyond.
Fenstermacher & Company, PC was founded a half-century ago when William C. “Bill” Fenstermacher Jr. acquired an existing accounting practice in the borough after having worked at a national accounting firm and as controller at a local mushroom company. Ellen, Bill’s wife, was also a partner in the firm. His son Chad, a graduate of the University of Delaware, entered the firm in 2000 after gaining eight years of experience with a Wilmington CPA firm.

Fenstermacher & Co.
Continued from Page 22
When Chad joined his father’s firm, Fenstermacher & Company was well-established. “The firm had been in existence for 27 years, had a great name in the community and many long-term staff,” Chad Fenstermacher said. “[His father] achieved that by having a high level of integrity and providing quality services. He said it’s very important when you’re in a small town to treat your client’s information confidentially; that’s just the nature of our work. Our clients trust us with very personal and private information, it’s very important to honor that trust.
Chad said working with his father, who retired in 2016, gave him a chance to learn from and alongside his dad. “He also gave me the opportunity to make changes and move the firm in the direction I wanted to see it go.”
The CPA noted that relationships among family members working in a business together change the work
dynamic. “To a certain extent, there’s a higher level of comfort with family members, and some of those work barriers aren’t there. The business and personal relationships cross over. We work with a lot of family and multi-generational businesses. We understand what they’re going through and can relate to our clients and the challenges that family-owned businesses face.”
Fenstermacher & Company, which also has offices in Wilmington and Ocean City, Md., provides accounting and tax services to clients with complex business, individual and estate tax planning needs. The firm also offers financial planning and investment management services.
Keeping up with the tax code may seem overwhelming to non-CPAs. How do accountants do it?
It’s a common question, Fenstermacher said, smiling. “We as CPAs are required to have 80 hours of continuing education every two years.” But it goes beyond an obligation.
“It’s a profession and with a profession comes lifelong learning. The trades do the same; certainly, being an auto mechanic today isn’t the same as 30 years ago. You’ve got to be a computer expert to some degree to work on a car. Tax changes are the same way.
“The core principles in taxation are still there. They may change some limits or make some changes to tax laws but for the most part the principles stay the same. We stay on top of the changes to provide the best service to our clients.”
One situation that presented new challenges was responding to the COVID-19 crisis. Prior to long-term business shutdowns, Fenstermacher & Company had serendipitously purchased enough additional equipment to allow their team members to work remotely. “Wi-Fi cards for computers, additional licenses for our firewall, just everything,” he said. “I got the box from Amazon and I thought, ‘this will be shipped back in two months
Continued on Page 26
Fenstermacher & Co.
Continued from Page 25
when the whole thing blows over.’ Of course, that didn’t happen and it was good to have because [computer equipment] became in high demand.”
Fenstermacher said that while working remotely during the crisis was a change, it certainly wasn’t the only one.
“A significant challenge was the implementation of stimulus programs for businesses during the height of the pandemic, including the Paycheck Protection Program, the Employee Retention Credit and other Federal and State programs.”
The Payment Protection Program was a Small Business Administration-backed loan that helped small businesses with payroll costs.
“Our clients looked to us for advice and to help them through it. We became dedicated to assisting clients
obtain the aid they needed during an extremely challenging time. When the PPP came out the guidelines changed on an almost daily basis. Every day we were looking for new clarifications and then applying the changes to our clients. We initially thought the impact from the pandemic would be short-lived, but as we all know that wasn’t the case. It really impacted our profession, I guess, in some ways differently than others.”
The Fenstermacher family has deep connections in Southern Chester County. Fenstermacher, wife Dawn and daughter Lauren live in the Unionville house his grandparents bought in 1939, the same house where father Bill Fenstermacher grew up. The firm had a couple of different Kennett Square offices before settling in its current South Broad Street location in 1978.
Another link is as long-time members of the Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce. His father joined in the early 1970s and Chad became active in the early 2000s.
Residents have the comfort of knowing that they can receive personal care without having to move. Care is brought to them. Quality of life, combined with a comfortable setting, makes Friends Home unique. It is the residents who fill the community with their vitality and spirit that make this a very special place, indeed.
“When I first joined my dad’s firm, the Chamber was one of the organizations that I became very involved with. The Chamber is a great way to meet business people in town and become a part of the business community.” He was promoted to treasurer very quickly. “Because that’s what happens [when you are a CPA],” he said with a laugh. He ultimately moved to the chairman’s position for a year.
“I have advice to new people joining the Chamber: It’s great to join, but you’ve got to get involved. If you’re not involved in it, all you do is pay dues and go to a couple of business card exchanges. When you get involved on a committee or the board, you’re interacting with more people on a deeper level, that’s the way to make friends and business contacts that you will have for years.”
Hoping to add more staff to help his growing firm, Fenstermacher said there seem to be fewer students
SamNova -
studying accounting.
“I think it’s a misconception that accounting is just debits and credits and your head down at a computer all day. There’s a certain amount of that, but really taking the knowledge that we learn in school and then from our experience and being able to relate that to individuals and business owners, helping them plan and make good decisions; it’s rewarding. That’s the fun part of it. My day is spent more face-to-face or on the phone with people than it is heads down and doing accounting-type work.”
Integrity, knowledge, family experience, dedication and local connections have all contributed toward Fenstermacher & Company’s success.
Services
LCH Health and Community Services celebrates 50 years
By Betsy Brewer Brantner Contributing WriterMigrant workers have certainly contributed much to the economy of southern Chester County, especially to the mushroom industry. Kennett Square is actually known as the mushroom capital of the world because over half of all U.S. mushrooms are grown in that area. The tradition of mushroom farming in Kennett Square dates as far back as the late 19th century, and the influx of migrants to this area can certainly be connected to the mushroom industry. Many workers come to this area to fill jobs that are open. These are often jobs that others in the community don’t want to do.
For over 50 years, LCH has responded to changing demographics and growing needs in the community. The organization’s commitment to providing accessible, integrated and equitable healthcare for everyone remains steadfast.
Ronan Gannon, CEO of LCH explained, “LCH was born out of the hearts of those who saw the need to support migrant workers in 1973. It was a social assistance movement that serves as a great example of a caring community coming together to meet a pressing need. All the credit goes to those who started LCH.”
He added, “Over time, there continued to be more demand for workers in the community, and consequently health care was added to LCH’s services and a nurse-led health center was formed. Over the years, LCH added physicians and dental services to support the community. In 2016, LCH began expanding from Kennett to Oxford, and
in 2018 expanded to add additional healthcare services in Jennersville.”
Gannon continued, “Our passion for our mission, relationships with community partners, and support from philanthropic individuals and foundations allow LCH to provide the services and tools for increased stability to our patients across many facets of their lives. LCH is helping our patients, our community, say ‘Yes!’ to a healthier and happier life.”
Today, LCH offers primary care, women’s health services, pediatrics, dental care, behavioral health counseling, social assistance, and community outreach. In 2016, LCH provided care for 5,168 total individuals over 19,653 visits. In 2022, LCH assisted 8,890 unduplicated individuals over 36,874 visits. LCH accepts Medicaid, Medicare, and most private insurances. For those without insurance, they offer discounted services based on family income and size. LCH’s health services are provided to all clients regardless of insurance status, and no client is ever turned away for inability to pay.
Gannon, has been connected to LCH as a board member since 2015 and has been a resident of southern Chester County for 27 years.
“My position as CEO has been challenging, exciting and incredibly meaningful to me,” he said. “It has been a wonderfully humbling and profound opportunity to be able to connect my experience in healthcare with an organization that I love in the community in which I live.”
The mission for LCH is about meeting the health and Continued on Page 30
LCH Health and Community Services
Continued from Page 28
happiness needs of their patients. Anyone with or without insurance is welcome. It is really about providing the best possible health care and community services for all.
Gannon oversees LCH’s mission to serve the community with integrated, high quality, person-centered care at LCH’s three locations: health centers in Kennett Square and Oxford, and a specialty services site in Jennersville that hosts LCH’s pediatrics, women’s health services, and dental care. LCH’s staff of over 90 employees provides care for almost 9,000 people each year.
At LCH, 51 percent of the board of directors are made up of LCH patients.
“Patients who are board members can help us understand the patient experience and help us fine tune our services to best address their needs,” Gannon explained.
When Gannon was asked if he was surprised by the growth of LCH he said, “In some ways I am, but in others, I’m not. I look back at the small non-profit agency that started in 1973, and I’ve reflected on how it has grown to meet the needs of the community. As needs grow, we look to grow to meet those needs if we can, and as we see services that are needed we grow into those services. Much of our patient growth has been through word of mouth. People know we will take care of them, and they refer other people.”
He mentioned the challenges they went through during the pandemic.
“We never closed our doors once during the pandemic,” he said. “We were one of the first organizations to get the vaccine. We administered over 13,000 vaccines. Some of the first vaccines LCH administered were to health care providers in southern Chester County so they could continue to take care of their patients. I think that was one of LCH’s finest moments.”
The population of people that LCH serves ranges from newborns to senior citizens.
Their integrated behavioral health care is something they are very proud of.
Continued on Page 32
LCH Health and Community Services

Gannon said, “If an LCH provider observes a patient in an anxious or depressed state during their visit, an LCH mental health specialist can come into the visit and conduct a screening in the moment and further assess what level of support the patient needs. Our provider team always has an eye on your total health.”
LCH can also help patients with insurance questions. And they never say they can’t take you because you have Medicaid.
They are celebrating their 50th anniversary now. The celebration began in Oxford on the First Friday with
a scavenger hunt. Events continued with a birthday party at the Kennett Library on Aug. 10, and many other events throughout the month.
Gannon said, “It’s great that this year National Health Center Week lines up so well with all of our other community events, and our 50th year celebration.”
They will continue their celebration into the fall with a ticketed 50th Mission Made Possible Birthday dinner event on Oct. 4.
More information about the upcoming events is available on the LCH Save the Date page. Follow LCH health and Community Service on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/LCHcommunityhealth.
For Belfint, Lyons & Shuman, it’s been 100 years and accounting
By Monica Fragale Contributing WriterThis year the CPA firm of Belfint, Lyons & Shuman, P.A. celebrates a century of public accounting. One thing that has remained the same over that 100-year history has been the CPA firm’s emphasis on building relationships with people.
“When you think of CPA firms, you think of having taxes done,” said Jonathan Moll, the executive director of strategy for the firm that’s based in Wilmington and has a strong base through its West Chester office. “We do traditional compliance and tax preparation services but with a focus on building relationships.”
But Belfint, Lyons & Shuman (BLS) is not at all like the stuffy stereotype one might imagine when thinking about a century-old CPA firm. Besides a state-of-the-art renovation to its offices, the firm incorporates cutting-edge ideas and applications and has a millennial-heavy visioning group that has been working to establish a progressive vision for the future.
“You can see how the ‘tools’ needed have changed from pencil and paper to user-friendly, applicationbased programs,” according to a post on the BLS LinkedIn page. “Our firm is invested in our future and will continue to better these tools while never losing sight of quality and security.”
The firm also has 13 owners, most of whom have joined the ownership group in the past decade.
“We went through a significant succession of the ownership group, and the current ownership group is very progressive while never losing sight of what we have learned from our predecessors,” Moll said. “A lot is new about us and yet we’re celebrating 100 years.”
Moll described BLS as an advisory firm that offers CPA services and cares about growing the CPA-client relationship.
“We always want to have a seat at the table to help (our clients) make informed decisions about whatever their goals are,” said Jenni Fleck Jones, who works in marketing and college recruiting for BLS.
The focus on their clients began in 1923 when Charles Belfint established the firm as C.I. Belfint & Co. and has continued over the last 100 years. According to the website, Belfint “created an accounting practice where clients received an interactive and personal approach to accounting and tax management services.”
The personal approach is something that every employee of BLS is encouraged to practice.
“Our culture is built on responsiveness and ability to provide clients with real-time solutions,” Moll said. “From the top on down, our managers, shareholders, and team members are involved. We think it’s important to really be responsive to our clients.“
The firm also places a large emphasis on community involvement, representing part of its core values.
“We give back in various ways to the local community and also to causes that are important to our individual team members,” said Jones.
Moll added that the firm encourages all its members, as well as the interns, to volunteer in the community.
In August, BLS members and interns volunteered at Ingleside Homes. “They scraped and painted the fence in front of the building as part of a beautification project,” a Facebook post read about the project at the nonprofit senior citizen-centered organization. “Some may have gotten more paint on themselves … LOL! Seeing the difference made with the fence was very rewarding, but the interactions with the residents were priceless!”
As part of the century celebration – check out the #100YearsAndAccounting hashtag -- an outside consultant was brought in to help develop an introspective
visioning process.
“The time is really now to start with a blank canvas,” Moll said. “We wanted this vision to be fresh and really set us up for the next 10 to 15 years.”
The vision formation group had a cross-section of all generations within the firm, representing different practices.
“It was a great process,” Moll said. “Our perspective of what we do as a vision is something that’s going to continue to evolve.”
BLS has an internship program that counts among its alumni some of the current leadership. Jones said that in January the firm welcomed three new shareholders who came through the intern program.
The firm also provides an externship program which is open to high school and college students that just want to learn about a career in public accounting, In fact there were former Avon Grove students who participated in the firm’s most recent summer externship. “We even have people who attend who are doing a change in career,” Jones said. “We’re just trying to give them perspective on what a career
in public accounting is like.”
And when new members join the firm from college, they are given time to work with each of BLS practice groups in their Rotational Development program, from international services to accounting and auditing to small business and corporate tax, before they decide on their specialties.
“It helps with retention,” Moll said. “We don’t pigeonhole them. We let them choose what they want to do.”
The 100th anniversary celebration will continue throughout the year. To learn more about how BLS is celebrating it, check them out on these platforms:

What’s in a number? Key to a thriving business
Whisman Giordano accounting firm celebrates 50 years
By Natalie Smith Contributing WriterConsidering the infinite array of figures an accountant might work with, one number has special significance to a Newark business.
Whisman Giordano continued to expand its services over the decades until it became the firm it is today, with about 30 employees offering a full complement of business financial expertise, including accounting, auditing, bookkeeping, tax and business advisory services. The elder Giordano is CEO; son Joseph V. Giordano is president and managing director; Lisa DeRose is COO as well as director and chair of the Tax Committee with Julie Morgan as director and chair of the Audit and Accounting Committee.
What has made the company so enduring and successful? Certainly, the experience and skill of the staff. Whisman Giordano has earned numerous accolades for its work, including 2022 (and in the running for 2023) “Best of Accounting Client Satisfaction” by Clearly Rated Business Solutions, which is voted on by clients; 2022 “Small Business of the Year” award from the New Castle County Chamber of Commerce; and 2022 and 2023 “Best Firms to Work For” by Accounting Today.
But Whisman Giordano also brings to the table some-
thing extra: its core philosophy of “Building Extraordinary Relationships.”
“That’s really the hallmark of our firm,” acknowledged Christa McLaughlin, company marketing manager. “We really focus on making that personal connection. We want our clients to stay for the long term. We have some clients who have been with us for a few decades at this point and we want the experience to be unlike any other accounting firm.
“It shouldn’t be a punishment to work on your taxes,” McLaughlin said. “It shouldn’t be an uncomfortable experience; it should be a pleasant experience. We try to work as trusted advisers and work hand-in-hand with our clients, because their success is our success.”
On the company’s website, it states a summary of what it calls its “core values,” which include trust, caring and respect.
The philosophy is consistent throughout the company, applying to the employees as well.
“Even when we hire, we always say we are looking for good humans who happen to be good at accounting. And that’s very much the bread-and-butter of our firm’s longterm stability,” McLaughlin said.
Treating employees with care and respect goes a long way in engendering their satisfaction and loyalty. “We want our team members to feel secure, and having access to senior management -- especially if [they’re] early in their career – can help them learn and grow. And again, it’s because we want people to stay and find out what makes them happy and allow them work on projects that bring them satisfaction.”

McLaughlin called it a “holistic approach” to dealing with people that their clients can sense.
“[Clients] come here because they choose to come here,” she said. “So much of our business is from referral, and we have parents sending their sons and daughters and even grandchildren to this firm.”
As is fitting in recognition of its five decades, Whisman Giordano has been performing “50 Acts of Kindness” throughout the communities it serves. Activities include participating in runs, golf outings and raising money for non-profit organizations. On the Whisman Giordano website, President and Managing Director Joseph V. Giordano stated: “We believe that our commitment to the community goes well beyond just serving our clients. We live here. Our families are here. Our firm has been very blessed over the past 50 years, and performing 50 Acts of Kindness is the least we can do. Performing kind acts and being kind should be everyone’s day-to-day norm.”
Continued on Page 40

McLaughlin underscored the president’s sentiment. “We try to be as much a part of the community as possible. We have people on different young-executive committees and things of that nature. We’re trying to be out there and make things better.”
When asked what she would tell a potential business client who wasn’t familiar with Whisman Giordano and Associates, McLaughlin was clear.
“What I would say to them in a nutshell would be: ‘Do you want quality work, communication, and a positive personal experience? Then we’re 100 percent the firm for you. If you want somebody you can trust and help your company grow, It’s this firm.’
“Because who doesn’t want to have good work done, have a nice experience and be treated decently while doing it?”

Beiler-Campbell at 50: Realtors for our community, and for our future
When Ben Beiler began his real estate career with Jim Arnold in the white building at the intersection of Route 1 and 41 in the early 1970’s, they had a handful of agents and an aspiration to grow the business one customer at a time, with a commitment to treat everyone with respect and loyalty.
Today, Beiler-Campbell Realtors is led and owned by Anthony Beiler and Brian Campbell, and is celebrating its 50th anniversary as one of the leading real estate companies in southern Chester and Lancaster Counties.
Ben purchased the company - then known as Arnoldmont Realty - in 1973. Brian Campbell joined the business in 1979 and later became partner with Ben. Ten years later, Ben’s son Anthony Beiler joined the company and later became a partner with Brian. Beiler-Campbell expanded to offer appraisals and opened additional offices in Kennett Square, Oxford and Quarryville. A Farm and Land Division and Auction Services were added that serves throughout western Pennsylvania and northern Maryland, as well as a Commercial Division.
Recognizing the needs of clients to have access to all transaction services under one roof, Beiler-Campbell also
founded a title company – Anvil Land Transfer – and a mortgage company – Delaware Valley Financial Mortgage. Over half a century, Beiler-Campbell has helped thousands of families, individuals and businesses open the door to a new chapter of their lives and their livelihoods.
Every transaction, every handshake, every late-night phone call with a client and every closing when keys are handed to a new homeowner, stems from the vision that Ben Beiler had to build a company that could serve the community with excellence.
“My father already had a lot of connections in the community – particularly in the dairy business – and what he saw early on was the natural gravitation of people who wished to move from the eastern part of the Route 1 Corridor to the western part,” said Anthony Beiler, President of Beiler-Campbell.
Anthony Beiler is quick to acknowledge that their years of growth wouldn’t be possible without their clients and their team of agents.
“We never forget that we owe our growth to the efforts of each team member, our families, and our clients,” he said. “We are grateful for the trust our clients placed in us over the years. We have a responsibility to hold ourselves to high professional
standards in conduct, speech and attitude.”
As in nearly every facet of modern life, the real estate industry has evolved to a streamlined world of communication and online transactions. Beiler-Campbell has mastered the art of utilizing forward edge technology while nurturing the face-to-face personal connection that clients desire.
“We stay on the forward edge of technology,” said Board Chairman Brian Campbell. “We provide our agents with the current tools, resources, experience and knowledge for them to succeed, but so much more importantly, it begins by hiring the right individuals. We have been blessed along the way by these phenomenal people, some of whom have been with us for as long as 40 years.
“We treat everyone in our company like they are a member of our family. We help them to succeed, we bring continued education to them, and we want them to know their field. If you are able to build trust with your clients,
develop authentic relationships and are excellent in your field, you will thrive.”
There is an intangible linked to the growth Beiler-Campbell has experienced over the last six decades that may not be names in the sales projections or end-of-the year financial reports. Nonetheless, it has become the fabric of the company.
“I give a lot of credit to my father, because his philosophy was always to maintain a high level of integrity, serve the people and place their needs above our own,” Beiler said. “The culture of service and support has been strengthened as like-minded individuals joined the team over the years. We have an outstanding management team that share in the vision that we are customer-based – we start by building a relationship with our client, understanding what they are looking for, and then serving their needs – and doing it with a high level of service and integrity.

“It’s not about pushing transactions through, but rather building relationships in the community. Being a locally owned company gives us the heightened responsibility to do business in a way that benefits our entire community.”
Soon after Campbell began at the company in 1979, he learned a lasting lesson from Ben Beiler.
“He gave me great counsel and mentorship,” he said. “I remember one transaction that had some challenges, and Ben told me, ‘Ask yourself, ‘What is right and what is wrong?’ I was a young guy just starting in the business and Ben demonstrated that it is about doing the right thing. He always said that if we take care of people with exquisite service, the rest will take care of itself.”
From management to the sales agents to the administrative staff, “we have a remarkable company culture,
and we all support each other,” said Marketing Director Kristine Pirrung. “We celebrate our individual milestones and are also

there for each other when someone is going through a challenge. Beiler-Campbell is an atmosphere of positivity – a feeling of wanting the best for each other and the people we serve.”
The commitment that Beiler-Campbell has for the community goes far beyond helping people buy and sell homes. Over the past several decades, it has been the company’s priority to give back to the community. Every year, Beiler-Campbell holds a Day of Service, with the goal to give a helping hand to local homeowners and non-profits. They provide lawn care, painting, building, cleaning, repairing and supporting local agencies such as Good Neighbors, the Luther House, Kennett Friends Meeting Home, The Garage Youth Center, The Lighthouse, Tick Tock Learning Center, Oxford Cemetery and various homeowners who needed a helping hand. Included with the Day of Service is a food drive.
For the past 15 years, Beiler-Campbell has held a charity golf tournament where upwards of $40,000 is donated to local nonprofits every year. Various beneficiaries have included Justin Jennings Foundation, Bridge of Hope, Good Neighbors, After the Bell and others.
“Years ago, Ben suggested that each manager and owner get involved with one or two nonprofits, so the call from him was to give back to our community,” Campbell said. “While it sounds great that we are serving these places, whatever we give, we get back ten-fold. The joy and spirit of helping others becomes a feeling that we treasure.”
For the past 50 years, the staff and agents at BeilerCampbell have been honored to be a part of what is often the most important transaction in a client’s life.
“For the seller, their home has rewarded them and opens the next chapter of their lives, and on the buyer’s

side, they are equally as excited to begin the next chapter of their own journey,” Campbell said. “To know that
Univest Bank and Trust Co.: 147 years of tradition, integrity and excellence
The principles that define the journey of every entity, every business and every initiative are usually found tucked within a succinct mission statement. At Univest Bank and Trust Co., they are in the form of 18 fundamentals known as the Univest Way, and they serve as action points that bring its culture to life: Always do the right thing. Have a growth mindset. Practice servant leadership. Invest in relationships. Deliver exceptional service. Comply with regulations. Don’t be an energy vampire. Be nice. Honor commitments. Collaborate. Attack the problem, not the person. Give back. Provide solutions. Assume positive intent. Listen generously. Speak straight. Celebrate success. Have fun.
Throughout its 147year history – from the time Union National Bank became Souderton’s first banking institution in 1876 to 2002 when the name was changed to Univest Bank and Trust Co. and continuing today -- Univest has been built by the power of its relationships, forged from a diversity of customers, communities, employees and shareholders.
Headquartered in Souderton, Pa. and with 37 financial centers throughout Philadelphia and Chester, Bucks, Delaware, Lancaster, Lehigh and Montgomery counties, Univest has become one of southeastern Pennsylvania’s most prominent full-service financial leaders on the strength of its products and services: consumer and commercial banking, insurance, wealth management, retirement plan services, small business financing, equipment financing and mortgage banking solutions.
“One of the best things about Univest is that we are local – giving our customers access to local decision
makers who live, work and play in our community,” said Jeffrey M. Schweitzer, president and chief executive officer of Univest Financial Corporation. “We take pride in delivering competitive, convenient solutions and exceptional service. Our vision can only be achieved if we serve the best interests of our customers, our communities, our employees and our shareholders.”
Broader footprint, advances in technology
While it continues to invest in southeastern Pennsylvania, Univest is also expanding its footprint in order to meet the lending and banking needs of local businesses and customers in new regions. In 2016, Univest expanded to Lancaster County and in 2023, it opened four new financial centers in Western Pennsylvania and Maryland – all offering a full menu of financial options and services including mortgage lending, wealth management, insurance and equipment leasing.
Understanding the growing preference for online technology in banking, Univest continues to make investments to enhance its digital solutions and personalize how it meets customers’ banking needs. Over the past year, it redesigned its website, univest.net, to provide an improved user experience; made progress on creating a fully-digital, automated commercial loan system; introduced a system for originating and closing unsecured loans and lines of credit that leads to faster turnaround times, launched the ability for small business customers to apply for credit online and laid the foundation for opening commercial deposit accounts online which will launch later this year.
‘Committed to Local’
The 18 fundamentals that form the Univest Way are not just manifested in the day-to-day commitment Univest’s nearly 1,000 employees demonstrate while at work. In their free time, members of the “Univest Family” are committed to giving back – serving as volunteer members for youth programs, local sports leagues, senior centers, fire associations, civic organizations and faith-based institutions. Together in 2022, Univest staff volunteered 12,300 hours to the communities they served, while also taking part in 25 Connecting with Community volunteer events that Univest hosted for its employees with local organizations such as the Chester County Food Bank, Manna on Main Street, Haven House, Camphill Special School, Friends of the Wissahickon and ArtsQuest. Promoting literacy remains a key philanthropic commitment for Univest, and in partnership with two financial education innovators EverFi and Inkwiry, it provided more than 4,000 students with access to interactive online courses that introduced them to financial education.
Univest is also an active partner in the communities it
serves through its “Committed to Local” philanthropic giving program. In 2022, Univest donated more than $2.5 million in support of more than 400 non-profit organizations and continues to offer leadership and financial support to organizations in the areas of art and culture, youth education, community and economic development and health and social services.
“We thrive at Univest because of our culture,” wrote Schweitzer and Chairman William S. Aichele in the company’s 2022 annual report. “It is the dedication of nearly 1,000 members of the Univest Family that moves the corporation forward as we help our customers and communities achieve their financial dreams. Through our ‘Committed to Local’ philanthropic giving program, we provide meaningful support for the communities we serve, and our employees get involved by giving back and embracing our community core value. We also continue to drive awareness around diversity, equity and inclusion and feel confident our efforts will allow us to continue to build a stronger company and ensure we have a workforce and customer base reflective of the communities we serve.”
