Centreville Layton School offers a summer program that strengthens literacy and math skills Centreville Layton School is looking to continue its tradition of providing a summer program that offers targeted support to strengthen literacy and math skills through a challenging, dynamic, and therapeutic program. Every year, they welcome their own students, as well as students from local independent, parochial, and public schools from pre-K through 12th grade. Lower and Middle School families seek Centreville Layton School for its well-rounded program that combines academic and recreational opportunities. The academic portion of the summer program is designed to review, enhance, and enrich academic skills so that students are prepared to start a new school year in the fall. This year, parents have the opportunity to choose from our traditional program which offers reading, math, and written language during our half-day academic mornings; or a program heavily concentrated in reading. The reading concentration program incorporates many strategies, such as the Wilson Reading Program, and aims to use literacy-based activities targeting phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Centreville Layton School prides itself on small class sizes, so each student receives the attention he or she needs. In addition to the educational portion, students have the option of staying for a dynamic afternoon recreational program. Afternoon campers enjoy trips to the pool, opportunities for field trips, and a full program of activities on the Centreville Layton School 20-acre campus. Their afternoon recreational program also offers students the opportunity to develop their social-emotional learning in a fun and safe environment. This year, high school students are able to choose between a individualized academic support program Continued on page 26

All abilities, limitless possibilities at Camp Fairlee When Matthew was nine, he started attending a camp that helped shape the course of his life. Always an independent child, he mastered new skills and faced challenges he never thought possible while at Easterseals Camp Fairlee. For Matthew, who has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair, there are very few boundaries or limits he cannot overcome. Now, Matthew is a PhD student at Georgia Institute of Technology and he credits Camp Fairlee with his ability to overcome obstacles. “The biggest thing that stands out to me about Camp Fairlee is that it gave me the ability to do activities that in other situations, like school, would not have been feasible,” Matthew said. “It helped me try different things and think about ways you can make activities accessible that I wouldn’t have thought of.” The skills Matthew learned at Camp, made high school seem like a breeze. He combined exceptional grades with a new found love for the theater starring in all of his high school productions. That passion grew throughout high school and into college where he continued to shine on stage. He attended University of Maryland Baltimore County as a Meyerhoff Scholar, and double majored in Computer Science and Math. “Easterseals and Camp Fairlee Manor gave Matthew the confidence to go forward and excel,” Lynne Schaefer, Matthew’s mom, says. “He did incredibly well in high school, including being inducted into the National Honor Society.” Matthew continued attending Camp Fairlee through the summer before his freshman year at college. “(Camp Fairlee) helped me work on skills of being independent and doing things by myself. The skills I learned at camp helped me later in life, like college, be more successful at living independently on campus. Camp gave me the mentality that I can make things work for me.” Give your loved one an unforgettable experience by taking advantage of Camp Fairlee’s summer camp experience. Wisdom Begins with Wonder. Celebrating thirty-one years of excellence. Join us at the Delaware Aerospace Academy Have you ever thought about the year 2025? The 21st century is a time of advanced technologies, harnessing energy, recycling our resources, futuristic structures, robotic probes, lunar outposts and human missions to Mars. The future holds undreamed of scientific and technological opportunities. The Delaware Aerospace Academy hopes to prepare students for those challenges. In operation since 1990, the objective of the Delaware Aerospace Academy is to provide hands-on training and experiences through our Destination academies in related activities and fields. Throughout the week, girls and boys in grades 1 - 10 are continually challenged to think, create, solve, build, and work cooperatively. All academies are designed to integrate the study of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) using Earth, Science and Space Education as the unifying framework. The academies are financed through tuition fees, grants and scholarship sponsorships, with emphasis on in-kind support from industry and other agencies. A working board and advisory council, consisting of representatives from industry, educational and supporting agencies, share their expertise and advise the group.

Full Day Academies: University of Delaware Cost for all Full Day Academies 6/22-6/26, 2020: $300 Before & after care available. Full-day academies: Mornings, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Hands-on activities and many opportunities for problem solving in small teams are included. Destination Sky & Beyond (entering 3rd or 4th grade) features a week of creative problem solving challenges including Powers of Ten, Millions of Stars, Planets, Space Habitats, and Rovers. In addition, cadets participate in exciting activities based on the physics of flight, leading to a training flight in the Elementary Simulator. Destination Space (entering 4th or 5th grade) features a series of experiments conducted in a space laboratory like NASA's "White Room." The results and solutions could have the potential to benefit the human race. Cadets will discover and learn about concepts from ground to space including machines, engineering, circuitry, science, weather and computer training. Plan on constructing and launching a bottle rocket. Destination Flight (entering 5th or 6th grade) focuses on an in-depth study of the principles of flight and cutting edge studies of the FAA and NASA Aeronautics programs. Ships, fish, different species of dinosaurs and prehistoric sea monsters – some that lived under the sea and even some pirates will add to an exciting week of adventure.

Young people of all ages are enraptured with innovation, technology and exploration. The academy has helped to intensify and channel that fascination. An understanding and an appreciation of our world and exposure to the wide variety of high tech career opportunities are essential to the young people of our country as they enter the 21st century. Explore science and nature at the Delaware Museum of Natural History Explore science and nature through hands-on, interactive camps for a variety of ages at the Delaware Museum of Natural History. Toddlers up to age three discover the world in Museum Babies camp. Preschoolers 4 to 6 years old explore dinosaurs with Museum Peeps morning camp. Campers completing kindergarten through sixth grade can choose from a variety of full-day camps. And, for ages 5 to 10, keep the fun going all year long with spring break, school day off, and evening camps. Join us for our favorite camps, returning with exciting new activities, as well as brand-new camps debuting this year. In addition to themed activities, camps include activities relating to the current special exhibit. Spring Break campers explore Tropical Odyssey and learn about the importance of butterflies and the rainforest, among other activities. During the summer, two camps—Be the Astronaut and Space Camp—are inspired by the upcoming special exhibit Be the Astronaut. The museum’s goal is to create an environment where learning is fun for the campers. A key component is hiring counselors who are just as enthusiastic as the kids. DMNH camps also stress the importance of being outdoors, with great spaces for campers to explore such as the campfire and picnic area as well as the hiking and nature trails. Inside the museum, campers explore the galleries, and there are dedicated areas for camp activities. Whether they are building a forest shelter, training like an astronaut, or making an exploding volcano, campers make exciting and unforgettable discoveries. All of our camps encourage children to create once-in-a-lifetime memories they will never forget! Learn more about Summer Camp at delmnh.org/camps

Cecil College offers nine weeks of summer camps With the winter blues fading and the joy of spring and summer just around the corner, it is time to start planning activities. What better way to whittle away the summer days than attending one of Cecil College’s summer camp programs? Cecil College currently offers nine weeks of summer camps for children 5 to 17 years old. Many great camps are offered at the North East Campus and Elkton Station, as well as the Fair Hill Nature Center, Plumpton Park Zoo, Chesapeake Wooden Boat Builders Club, and Kids on Kayaks. Our summer camps provide the opportunity for children to participate in fun activities such as swimming, hiking, and various sports. They also have the opportunity to develop important life skills that are difficult to achieve in other environments. While enjoying fun activities, children learn valuable skills to help them be successful throughout their lives. Such skills include communication, collaboration, creativity, leadership, socialization, and problem solving.

Cecil College summer camps offer some of the most powerful learning environments and can be a place where a child’s social education builds self-esteem. Many of the camps allow children to unplug from technology while exploring the world around them. Others include learning the latest technology and software! Most importantly, Cecil College summer camps provide a safe and enjoyable environment where children take part in the unstructured play time vital to healthy emotional and social development. Children get to reinvent themselves at camp and be who they truly want to be, which helps them build confidence. Cecil College’s summer camps offer before-care beginning at 7:30 a.m. and after-care meets until 5 p.m. Campers can play games, read books, and work on arts and crafts projects. To learn more about these summer camps, contact Cecil College’s Lifelong Learning at 443-907-1378 or learning4life@cecil.edu.

5 ways YMCA summer camp makes your life easier The YMCA of Greater Brandywine offers summer camp at the Jennersville YMCA in West Grove and the Kennett Area YMCA in Kennett Square. Here are five ways Y Summer Camp will make your life easier. 1. Camp Planning Chart and Camp Finder. We know planning your kids’ summer takes a lot of time, which is why we created a camp planner and camp finder to simplify the process. Visit our website for more information: www.ymcagbw.org. 2. Options. The YMCA offers traditional camps with different weekly themes, as well as creative arts camps, Sports camps, Environmental & STEM camps and more! 3. Before and After Camp Time. A huge advantage of Y Summer Camp is the extended camp time offered at no additional cost. Drop off early, 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., or pick up later, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., knowing your children will be safe and occupied with fun camp activities. 4. Cost. The YMCA of Greater Brandywine has very competitive rates for summer camp. A 10% discount is also offered for siblings (some restrictions apply). Price still a little prohibitive? Financial assistance is available. 5. Swimming. Most Y summer camps offer recreational swim time each day (after being tested on the first day for safety). Additionally, some sites offer camp swim lessons for your children for a small fee. For more information on the YMCA of Greater Brandywine, visit www. ymcagbw.org.

Spark an inner passion to be fearless Theatre encourages kids to be fearless in their play, speak their minds and develop their imaginations. The outcome is confident children who know who they are and what they want. At West Chester Studio for the Performing Arts at Uptown! the goal is to develop and foster fearless kids and teens. The award-winning theatre school and summer camps offer theatrical summer fun for students ages 4 to 17 who are just beginning to explore the world of theatre, building upon skills developed during the school year, or planning to pursue theatre in the professional industry.
