TCHS and West Chester University provide student program to meet business needs Geo-Spatial Information Systems (GIS) is one of the most vital industries you have probably never heard of. Want to know the best location to open a new Wawa store based on convenience, location and local population? GIS helps make it possible! GIS refers to information systems that allow for the integration, analysis, storage, editing and sharing of different types of data. This data is then brought together using sophisticated technology to present a more holistic picture of a particular geographic region. In other words, GIS is data presented in space. A recent survey of businesses conducted by the University of the Redlands, in partnership with GIS software development company Ersi, found that about 40 to 50 percent of businesses expect to need a high usage of GIS services within the next three years. In particular, this usage would be important to business research and development, sales, marketing and operations. In addition, over 86 percent of the companies surveyed reported that GIS was already being utilized across multiple departments within their organization. The emergence of GIS as an essential aspect of business in twenty-first century markets highlights the needs for students to have the skills necessary to meet this growing demand. Chester County Technical College High School (TCHS) has started a new Geo-Spatial Information Systems & Data Science (GIS) program in partnership with West Chester University to help prepare students to meet this demand. This one-year program will be open to high school seniors and offers them the opportunity to earn college credits as they gain the skills necessary to be a part of this growing field. GIS students will be able to take advantage of West Chester University’s state-of-the-art lab and facilities in order to gain the experience necessary to be successful in this industry. The TCHS GIS program is helping students become competitive in an ever-changing marketplace. Interested in learning more? Attend the TCHS GIS Open House on Jan. 17 17 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at West Chester University Graduate Center (1160 McDermott Dr., West Chester). For more information about the TCHS GIS program, visit www.tchsbrandywine.org.

Creating Music Experiences for Your Young Child Our Early Children Music & Movement programs can be a musical treat for both you and your child. “Participating in a music class together — singing, dancing, playing instruments—is a fun experience that releases endorphins to make both of you feel great,” said Melinda Oriani, the head of the early childhood department and instructor. “Music for Little Ones” (age 4-18 months) and “Tots Rock” (age 16 months to 3 years) classes awaken a baby’s or toddler’s natural curiosity for music. Both classes involve activities ranging from lullabies and rhymes to singing and playing instruments and each includes take-home materials like CDs/downloads, books and simple instruments. Learning by the “mother tongue” of Music “As a regionally recognized program, our Suzuki Academy offers instruction to students as young as 2½ in a nurturing, supportive environment,” explained Cheri Astolfi, the Music School Dean. “Music School Suzuki faculty — teaching violin, viola, cello and piano — are trained in the Suzuki Method and registered through the Suzuki Association of the Americas. Based on the educational philosophy of Shinichi Suzuki, the program applies the “mother tongue” approach to music study. Students learn to play as they would learn language — by listening and imitating — augmented with support of parents, who are encouraged to attend lessons and assist in home study. Suzuki Academy instruction is available in Wilmington, Pike Creek, and Milford. Schedule your personal tour and/or sample lesson with The Music School of Delaware today to discover the best fit for your children’s and family’s active lives. 5 benefits of going back to school Whether you are immersed in your profession or looking to enter a new field, there is a great chance you can benefit from going back to school—even if “school” only consists of one short-term professional education course. We know that adding another commitment to your already busy schedule can be a challenge, but all of us on the University of Delaware Division of Professional and Continuing Studies (UD PCS) team are confident that your experience will make your effort well worth it. Don’t just take our word for it, however. Instead, read how five UD PCS students describe the benefits of continuing their education with impactful courses geared toward their specific career goals. 1. Make more money “The Paralegal Certificate Program really helped me look at myself from a different perspective and see how the sacrifices I made paid off tenfold,” said Katie Eide. “My salary has increased and I am able to take care of my family.” 2. Career advancement “I am definitely implementing what I learned in the Analytics: Optimizing Big Data Certificate classes into my new job as an analytics consultant for IBM Watson Health.” said Sambhavi Parajuli. 3. Expert instructors teaching applicable skills “I believe the best thing about the Project Management Certificate was being taught by a qualified instructor with over 20 years of project management experience,” said Alicia May. “I was able to take the knowledge that I received in class and apply it to my everyday work experience.” 4. Networking opportunities “I was lucky because somebody I was actually taking the Paralegal Certificate Program with was able to get me into a law firm,” said Sandra Kece.

5. Keep abreast of trends “I learned in Fundamentals of Social Media Marketing that you have to stay engaged at all times,” said Thonnia Lee. “You really have to look at all of the platforms to keep up with what folks are saying so whatever you are sharing or mentioning doesn’t seem out of touch, out of date and out of tune with the rest of that particular world.” To read more about the impact UD PCS programs have had on our students, please visit www.pcs.udel.edu/back-to-school-benefits.

Children need the right tools and support to find success, both in the classroom and as they grow into young adults. Wilmington Friends School is a community. We offer an unsurpassed academic program, and just as important, Friends is a great place to grow up. What often brings families to Quaker education (95 percent of the families who choose Friends are not Quaker) is the appeal of an academic program with depth—one that asks students to question, to collaborate, to be creative, to take risks—within a caring community that balances focus on the individual with responsibility to the common good.

Quaker matters. Come see why. Highlights of our program include: • Reggio Emilia-inspired preschool • Lower School STEM Lab, computer programming, Singapore Math and Spanish instruction • “1-to-1” student laptop program, recognized as an Apple Distinguished Program, beginning in 5th grade • IB Diploma Programme (first in Delaware) • School Year Abroad member (first in Delaware) • Malone Scholars School (first and only one in Delaware) • 860-panel solar PV system • New Middle and Upper School Design Labs; and net-zero Global Learning Center • New theater, gym, turf field and track • Spanish beginning in pre-kindergarten; Spanish, Chinese and French offered in 6th through 12th grade.

The Tome School The Tome School sets high standards in academics and personal behavior with a rigorous academic program and a dedicated, caring faculty that helps students reach their potential and acquire the skills that they will need to lead successful lives. “Tome is unique,” said head of school Christine Szymanski. “We put a big emphasis on respect, personal responsibility, and academic rigor. We talk about doing things the ‘Tome Way.’” The ‘Tome Way’ has always been to provide a top-quality education to students at an affordable cost—that was what Jacob Tome envisioned when he founded the school in 1889. Jacob Tome, a banker, politician, and philanthropist, built one of the largest fortunes in the U.S. at the time while he was living in Cecil County. He wanted to create a school in the area that would offer the finest education for students willing to undergo its challenging regimen, regardless of their families’ ability to pay the cost for that education. With its long tradition of excellence, the Tome School continues to be true to that mission today, focusing on academics, character, and community. The school educates approximately 455 K-12 students each year. With small class sizes—the maximum number of students is 14 in kindergarten,

20 in grades 1-8, and 25 in grades 9-12—the faculty members offer the personal attention that students need. Tome graduates are well-prepared for the future. In two recent graduating classes, the school’s seniors exceeded the state average SAT scores in reading, math, and writing by more than 100 points. When a graduate of The Tome School arrives on a college campus, he or she is typically ready for the new academic challenge. “We are very academically driven,” explained Szymanski. “So when students get to their next schools, they are very well-prepared.” Tome School keeps tuition significantly lower than other independent schools, partly because of the substantial funding from The Jacob Tome Institute and partly because of parental assistance. Volunteer efforts by Tome families help keep tuition increases to a minimum. The Tome School is proud to be a part of the Cecil County Community, and has been an active member of the Cecil County Chamber of Commerce for 30 years. The Tome School is located at 581 S. Maryland Avenue in North East, Maryland. The telephone number is 410-287-2050. For more information, visit www.tomeschool.org.
