American X British English is spoken in different ways on both sides of the Atlantic. Over the years, the differences between British English and American raised debates and passionate discussions. The modern British English is heavily influenced by American English, causing many contrasts disappear. Pronunciation is, in some cases, very different, but the vast majority of American and British citizens easily understand each other. During most of the nineteenth century, some British citizens defended the view that the Americans were "tarnishing" or "corrupting" their mother tongue. If we interpret "tarnishing" and "corrupting" by "changing", then these English purists were even correct. However, they did not understand that change is the inevitable fate of all living languages. Today, English has become a Lingua Franca **, spoken with many accents by many people in the world. In view of this English-speaking cultural diversity, the notion that British English is the "best kind of English" is clearly outdated. British English is just one of many unique varieties of English that exist today. To complete the few differences between British English and American are much more likely to enrich the communication than to make it slower.
