SKILLS AutoCAD Photoshop Illustrator In Design Sketch-up Rhinoceros Microsoft Office Hand sketching Manual drafting Revit Spanish speaker

Adriana Carias is a landscape architecture graduate from the University of Southern California, with interest in landscape conservation and the social impacts on communities. Adriana had the experience to understand cultural landscapes outside the United States, as in her final year of the MLA program she worked on a master plan for the Eminonu Waterfront in Istanbul, reimaging the public infrastructure at the water’s edge of one of the city’s busiest and most significant places for residents and tourists alike. For her final Direct Design Research project, she addressed contemporary challenges in the San Joaquin Valley that had as focus food availability as an issue of social justice through studies of the global existence of food deserts, lack of access to nutritious food and appropriate use of resources. For the last year and a half Adriana has had the opportunity to develop Residential Landscape projects, working closely with cleints, suppliers and Landscape Architects allowing her to understand construction principles at a closer scale. EDUCATION 2016 Master in Landscape Architecture University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California 2012 Bachelor in Architecture Catholic University of Honduras, Tegucigalpa, Honduras

DESIGNCOMPETITION “We all Know that something is eternal. And it ain’t houses and it ain’t names, and it ain’t earth, and it ain’t even the stars... everybody knows in their bones that something is eternal, and thay something has to do with human beings. All the greatest people ever lived have been telling us that for five thousand years and yet you’d be surprised how people are always losing hold of it. There’s something way down deep that’s eternal about every human being” Thorton Wilder, Our Town

Confluence Park provides the Town of Peterborough with a new environmental structure and cultural destination. Our design proposal (re) positions Thornton Wilder’s Grovers Corners at the confluence of Nubanusit Brook and the Contoocook River. The design works with the forces of nature and accentuates the site’s differences, creating a destination for public entertainment, a farmers market, eating, picnicking, theater and leisurely play. Confluence Park blurs the lines between architecture and rich landscape ecologies. A structural interweaving of hydrology, soil conditions and a new urban morphology works with the creation of a manipulated topography that rearticulates the existing landscape logics of the site. The Monadnock Farm House & Pop-Up Shops act as a spine connecting Peterborough’s existing Depot Square Park and new footbridge with the proposed Contoocook Meadow Park and Man-Made Landscape. The Peterborough Pavilion & Amphitheatre creates a venue for outdoor music, film, theater and First Friday monthly presentations. It is nestled within The Green Carpet landscape that now ties the GAR Hall to an outdoor balcony with views of the rivers below. The Flowering Promenade connects pedestrians and bicyclists to Nubanusit Park from Grove Street and creates a new strolling path along the length of existing Nubanusit Brook.

STUDIOWORK “The dynamic of the site requires to design processes rather than a landscape’s final form. Instead of introducing external forms and transfoming the site to accomodate those forms, these are “found” and evolved out of systems already there.” John Dixon Hunt

CITY’S BACKGROUND

HISTORIC BUILDINGS AND TOPOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS

THESISPROJECT Design Research Studio addressed contemporary challenges in the San Joaquin Valley. This studio catalyzed a multi-year think-tank on the Great Central Valley, one of the most highly constructed landscapes of earth. The global existence of food deserts, lack of access to nutritious food and appropriate use of resources, makes food availability an issue of social justice. “Famine, drought, hunger and malnutrition, biodiversity and the transfer of large expanses of land from poor nations to wealthy and powerful ones are just some of the thousands of macro-issues that make the role of food in the future of the world a critical one.”

INDIVIDUAL DESIGN RESEARCH At the end of Fall 2015, after developing the [Re] Charge Fresno 2100 vision as part of the Game Changers office, each student selected individul locations that related to their thesis. Social and environmental justice was selected as research topic to be established in the Mendota area, where communities as well as soils for agriculture suffer depleted conditions. The first step towards achieving a thesis positions, was to elaborate a reserch question that included the critical intervention of landscape architecture to solve them.

SOIL REMEDIATION & NETWORKS

Due to poor quality soils, Mendota serves as a great case study for a research center for specialized remediation techniques. Rhizodeposition, bio-drilling, agroforestry, silvopasture.

As a strategy to create more accessibility in the region, a network of bike paths was established. Such paths are located following roads, the railway and water systems [canals, Fresno slough, San Joaquin River].

Media for Landscape Architecture: 3D Design [Developed on Rhino] Instructor: Kate Harvey Spring 2015

“A striking aspect of natural morphogenesis is that formation and materialization processes are always inherently and inseparably related. In stark contrast to these integral development processes of material form, architecture as a material practice is mainly based on design approaches that are characterized by a hierarchical relationship that prioritizes the generation of form over its subsequent materialisation.” Achim Menges, “Polymorphism”
