Hi! My name is

ADRIANA HALL I am currently a 3rd year master’s student in the dual-degree program at Rutgers University, studying to attain a Master of Landscape Architecture. In my coming of age process, I am realizing that I am most passionate about social justice and activism in the landscape. I love to design spaces for people and cultures that are underrepresented in society, which in turn brings light to conversations that can sometimes be difficult to have.

THE PATH OF VITALITY In this graduate studio, we were to design a 21st Century eco-friendly cemetary. For my design, I created a garden-style “cemetery” that will reflect this journey from grief, to healing, to positive remembrance using natural burial.

3

GRIEF HEALING

POSITIVE REMEMBERANCE

1” = 200’

The main tool to aid in this process is called Hoodoo. This practice, uses natural materials (plants, candles, animals, etc.) to attract different types of energy to a certain place or person. The main attraction tools used in this design are represented in flame shape of the meadow and plantings.

4

The golden building represents the end goal of positive remembrance. The building features glass cut outs on the north, east, and west sides of the building. On the east and west glass cutouts, there is a pattern overlaid that mimics a weaving pattern.

5

This second perspective displays the physical transition from grief to healing in the site. Progressing from the dark and heavily planted grief forest to the healing meadow, plants like eucalyptus, cowslip, and mugwort help to reinforce the healing atmosphere.

6

OASIS GARDEN In this praxis studio, we were to design outdoor spaces for The Rutgers Day School, who serves a population that suffers from behavioral issues.

7

My concept was based on comfort zone levels for predictability. A bullseye was used to describe it, the inner circle as the comfort zone, middle ring as the stretch/learn zone, and the outer ring as the panic zone. The forms resulted from this as well as the fluidity of fun shapes that attracts kids.

The entrance, as seen in the perspective on the left, features colorful plants that can attract people to the building.

The older kids’ play space (13-21) is very minimal as teenagers don’t require a playground. A grass plane with a fountain that acts as a cool down space. Alternatively, it can be a grounding place for kids having a mild episode. This space also includes a one-on-one therapy space is located behind the greenhouse.

GOGO MUSIC AND PLACE IDENTITY: THE PERSEVERANCE OF A CHOCOLATE CITY This thesis analyzes how the identity and sound of D.C. as represented through Go-Go music, is a catalyst for organization and activism in response to intense development pressures. It also explores streets in D.C. as public spaces that activate public awareness and response.

11

Through an analysis of the history of Black music, from enslavement to Go-Go, this thesis illustrates how music is a form of unrestrained expression and empowerment. This history validates music as a documentation of place identity and as an activism tool to gather and strengthen communities.

12

The main vehicle for this activism is the street, which through different methods of design, can be manipulated to support resilient placemaking.

13

This thesis culminates in a documentary video as a means to share the story of D.C. though a personal lens and visually supplement all the topics discussed. This accompanying visual component allows for an ephemeral analysis on place and how its identity can develop over time.

In this internship, the planting plan for the George Mason Memorial was my main project. I created an additional planting plan for a construction area and translated that into AutoCAD. Then I determined which perennial plants needed to be replaced and or changed based on conditions and client requests.

In this internship, the main project was to create a experiential river walk along the Hackensack River in Northern New Jersey. I created these two maps in GIS. The first ones shows the Land Use surrounding the river and the other displays Critical Habitat areas in the watershed that could be affected by this proposal. 18
