Archaeological Museum in Alfama Lisbon

Starting from the analysis of a set to a piece of equipment and its enhancer nature of new relationships in the city, the intention was to design a building that took up the character of a key piece of valuing reconfiguration of the urban fabric in which it operates. Thus the exercise proposed the creation of a museum of archeology, in a city area of Lisbon, Alfama, where the historical heritage is very rich, from the Roman period, passing the medieval time, untill today.

Based on the different perspectives on the city of Lisbon, the spaces shape up according to the views, to capture it in different ways, so its shape is cut targeting the viewer’s gaze. Multiple skylights bring to showrooms the necessary and sufficient light to preserve the conservation of archaeological pieces. Being an area with lots of archaeological heritage undiscovered, the museum basement floor has an area of excavations, where the work is steady, having the support of cleanrooms and restoration of the objects found.

Inside, double height ceiling spaces make the visual connection of the different programs, thus creating different places of exhibition. The outer material chosen for one of the parts of the museum, was the granitic stone, rigged so inspired by the many monuments in Alfama. Intended to be an approximation to the medieval era, which was later contradicted by the use of white concrete in the rest of the building, so this was combined with the contemporary. At the beginning of the third year, it was proposed the exercise of drawing a single family house dwelling in the countryside, at Azenhas do Mar, Sintra, according to a predetermined program. The site is characterized by being a windy area, the main ones being the North winds.

Model photos

The land is located along an escarpment, framed by the Atlantic Ocean and Sintra Mountains, with the village of Azenhas at his feet. Taking into account the features of the site, designed up a house that came with the ground, running for protection from winds and seek views. PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK EDUCATIONAL PRODUCT

The circulation is made around the central void with trees. This elements intersect the view to the other rooms in the house, offering some privacy to the users but allowing light entering in the spaces. At the downstairs level, that is half buried, is made the access to the courtyard. This open air space makes the bridge between the private rooms and the library/playroom. Social and private spaces enjoy the ocean view, Forest and Village.

Refugee Settlement in Ljubljana Slovenia

The aim of projecting a refugee camp in Slovenia, in a small village nearby Ljubljana, to tackle the major social conflicts existing in Syria, shows the evolution of thought in architecture, of growing concern over the living conditions at risk populations. The existing refugee camps where food, water and sanitation are lacking, are overcrowded and don’t offer good living conditions. Based on a different approach, the camp of Ljubljana aims to provide protection to Syrian families until they can return home.

When thinking in the refugees’ arrival, it has been decided that they will come in waves, so there will be a need of some structures that will allow the growth in size and number along with the people coming. PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK EDUCATIONAL PRODUCT With that assumption in mind it has been thought the idea of two types of public buildings: A-type and B-type. PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK EDUCATIONAL PRODUCT - A-type of building is the type that will allow growing and spreading, also adjusting to the needs of the people. Its main characteristic besides growing is that the spreading will only be allowed under the roofing system, which will make things easier with the whole construction, and by the way, protecting the building out of the decided places. - The B-type buildings will also be public buildings, but the main difference from the A-type is, that while the A-type will spread under the roof, the B-type will be fixed in its size and shape and it will also be only attached to the roof, never going under it. These buildings are the hospital, school and mosque.

Congress Center at Eduardo VII Park Lisbon

18 19

The project of the congress center in the Park Eduardo VII, emerged as a proposal to a urban renewal of the space ,since it is in a state of degradation, and also to meet the local need for a building that could host large publics for various purposes. Functioning as a green artery of the city, the park symmetrically organized by a large avenue, finds in itself leisure facilities, trade, the Lisbon greenhouse and other buildings of architectural interest. The program for the new building includes an auditorium with capacity for 4000 people, meeting rooms and exhibition spaces, what will bring large and different users to the park, restoring his life.

circulations technical area auditorium

wc reception administrative zone avac conference rooms foyer store cafe multiporpose room banquet hall

parking storehouse exhibition room

Axonometry

In order to have the least visual impact on the park, it was intended to bridge the gap that hindered access to the park, creating, by modeling the terrain, large terraces that did the level of connection to the great central avenue. The building is developed by bodies that follow the slope of the land open to the urban view and the vegetation. The vertical circulation has great importance in this project, since it allows the connection between the different building bodies, and is made around ramps that lead the user to various perspectives of the space.

Entrance level

Model photos Longitudinal section

To become almost imperceptible, much of the building is buried, getting natural light through large windows in the main facades, skylights and light wells. The auditorium marks the presence of the building on top of the park as the only element detached from the whole. The interior was intended to give a pleasant atmosphere through the use of wood and zenithal light.

In addition to the congress center program, one also intervened at city level through design of street furniture, new outdoor leisure spaces that maintain visual contact with the building and better ways to move through space with new paths design. Thus, the intervention took place at the urban level allowing for better living space and combating existing degradation.
