M3/KGMount Fuji Architects
Setembro/September 2011

At the beginning of the second year, with mentor Architect José Mateus, was proposed an analysis of their work, in order to understand the mass / material interface, very present in this project, and explore the volumetries, circulations and programs. The study would later result for the realization of an extension for the original house, with the aim of serving as a studio for the couple.

“The role of architecture is to live to alleviate the sensory side of people, not stimulate intellectual. A house as a “white cube” behind feelings of fatigue, it is very abstract, thus forcing the brain to think, and she has to be a relaxing place.“This is the idea behind the work of the authors m3/Kg. They managed to combine the needs of the client space with the structure of wood used, leaving it in plain sight. This combination results in an opaque volume in a “L” with another transparent parallelepiped.

The structure in the Annex is utilized as an organizing space and serves as shelving in the studio. The difference here is that this is pulled out, functioning as a negative of m3/kg, and can be seen from the outside. Light has a very important role in this work. At the main entrance the visitor is confronted with a light game created by vertical cracks that address the lighting needs there. Overhead light is present throughout the Annex.

Following the skills developed in the previous semester, including diagnostic, analysis, “noted the passing of understanding”, it was intended to put into practice the skills acquired in an urban context. Starting from the analysis of a set to a piece of equipment and its enhancer nature of new relationships in the city, wanted to design a building project that took up the character of a key piece of valuing reconfiguration of the urban fabric in which it operates. Thus the exercise proposed the creation of a museum of archeology, in a city area of Lisbon, Alfama, where the historical heritage is very rich, from the Roman period, passing the medieval time, untill today.

Based on the different perspectives on the city of Lisbon, the spaces shape up according to the views, to capture it in different ways, so its shape is cut targeting the viewer’s gaze. Multiple skylights bring to showrooms the necessary and sufficient light to preserve the conservation of archaeological pieces. Being an area with lots of archaeological heritage undiscovered, the museum basement floor has an area of excavations, where the work is steady, having the support of cleanrooms and restoration of the objects found.

Inside, double height ceiling spaces make the visual connection of the different programs, thus creating different places of exhibition. The outer material chosen for one of the parts of the museum, was the granitic stone, rigged so inspired by the many monuments in Alfama. Intended to be an approximation to the medieval era, which was later contradicted by the use of white concrete in the rest of the building, so this was combined with the contemporary.

Casa Unifamiliar nas Azenha do Mar Single-family House at Azenhas do Mar Setembro/September 2012
At the beginning of the third year, it was proposed the exercise of drawing a single family house dwelling in the countryside, at Azenhas do Mar, Sintra, according to a predetermined program. The site is characterized by being a windy area, the main ones being the North winds. The land is located along an escarpment, framed by the Atlantic Ocean and Sintra Mountains, with the village of Azenhas at his feet. Taking into account the features of the site, designed up a house that came with the ground, running for protection from winds and seek views.

One chose an area in which the slope is more evident with the aim of dividing the housing on two floors. The first, where access is gained, hosts the social services area and the second, which is below, to private spaces. Thus, the arrival of the house gives up the road behind the site, if after entering the upper floor (north facade) and containing adequate circulation within, if one goes down, being able to leave the house on the bottom floor - it is returned to the ground. Upon entering there is an ante-chamber, which precedes the hall and overlooking the inner courtyard.

To reply to a problem of desertification and deterioration in the historic center of Lisbon, thought up a solution that would transform some buildings for residential students to serve the various universities and their difficulties of accommodation for new students. Thus, different buildings were part of a network of decentralized services, ie each dorm would be responsible for a major program - canteen, library, gym ... so that there was active movement of students downtown.
Maintaining the traditional façade pombalina, the entire interior would be modified for greater user comfort. The connection to the backyard is a major change, because before it was a small space that gave little light and ventilation, and so was extended, creating a small courtyard on the first floor, which serves all the needs of light and ventilation missing the residence. There are two types of room, double and single, that have always wc and study space. The ground floor entrance would have a reception space and trade that would have direct connection to the street. Floors in the rooms there is a distribution of functions, with the 1st floor, living room, 2nd kitchen / dining room and the last study room. On the roof there is a covered space for the different possible activity in residence.

When i was thinking in a solution of eco -camping in Ljubljansko barje, I figured this should not report their presence on site. Should go unnoticed, engaging with nature. I was inspired by the snowflake flower gift in park landscape , to design a structure that hung on trees , seeming to float on the mountain. The wood allows to define the shape of the petals and offers the lightness required to the structure. The cork , in addition to insulation and waterproof, is very comfortable to touch. Lining the interior of the cell and protecting the organic core of coconut fiber reinforced with a geosynthetic network that gives the rounded shape of the structure . The outer layer is waterproofing white membrane that gives the finished similar look of the flower. The “flower“ acess is given by stairs attached to a tree, and inside a ladder brings us to a protected sleeping area.

Walls are just bare concrete, which over time will reach the desired aged look , with mosses and trees camouflaging it’s existence. Atelier para Artistas Studio for Artists Fevereiro/February 2014
Taking into account the needs of a particular family, was proposed to create a studio for a couple of artists, in a site where there is already the family residence. With the aim of opening to the surrounding space and the integration in the field, this workshop need work spaces and creating a route for exhibitions.
Podemos enfrentar a situação aqui: a cidade e a natureza.
The site where was proposed to create a studio for two plastic artists, has a privileged location, thanks to the proximity with the historic center of Ljubljana and a special connection with Barje. We can face to situation here: the city and nature. After an analyse of the place, i thought in a simple construction, constituted by corten steel elements, with diferent heights. This elements would go up and down, depending on the view, these can serve as a barrier or window to the exterior.
Noise and not so pleasant views could be also transcended with natural elements, as trees and bush planted in the site. To create two different work spaces for the clients, one has distinguished two cores (in red), protected by the trees, that give privacy to work, but never losing the visual contact between them and the garden, where the children will be playing..

Walk the Line Maio/May 2014
The Mountain setting between VIČ and ŠIŠKA area is an unfinished business for most Ljubljana inhabitants. For being the city lung, given by is great green extension, Tivoli hill can’t br passed easily by foot or even by car, since roads are limited to a part of the place, and public transports don’t exist. This creats great inconvinients to the space everyday users that need to circulate throught the city centre to reach bothways. Concerning this mobility problem it was propose to think a solution that would deal with relief relation, terrain modelling and also programs that would work between the two study areas.

With the help of a block diagram it’s easy to identify the most important existing programs that influence the project. In Vic area one can see that the students dormitory of Rozna formed with some apartment blocks is marking the urban tissue with medium/high buildings. Next to it is biotechnical faculty, a little displaced from the others.

And finally the rest is formed by social housing lower buildings. From this area will come the majority of users that will use the space for leisure, since is here that we find most of the students. In Siska area the urban tissue is more organic and most of the buildings are housing with small sizes. Here is situated the recreational center. This is the biggest atraction in Siska part and a good starting point.
After the analysis, was created a path that is developed through a red line that connects the students center with the sport and housing center. This line is following the terrain, that’s the reason of its serpentine shape. The aim is to create a way where we can find different kinds of programs that will intersect with the existing ones, but with a true connection from one side to the other.

It’s suppose to be a shortcut from the city centre, leaving people walk through nature to their homes or only for a matter of pleasure. In this pathway we have five different types of programs, they are: rest spaces, viewpoints to the park and the city, shops spaces for cafes and bookshops, playgrounds for kids and skate parks and climbing walls in the most vertical slope areas.

The world crises are increasingly common and troubling, leaving no one indifferent. This situation was addressed in the discipline of Project IV on the coordination of Prof. Matej Blenkus, in a group working with the aim of creating a refugee camp that would allow its users to return to a quiet life and respect their ideas and ways of life. For this, the field would have to make use of dwellings, public buildings, parks and all the services necessary for life in a new country, Slovenia. In the following pages is the final result with all descriptions, organized so its better comprehension. Given that the 2nd year was in charge of housing, 3rd public buildings and 4th and 5th Urbanism, only the latter will be shown to have belonged to me.

Bearing in mind that will be a social project for the Syrians for only five years, the field, after this period, will adapt its functions to monitor the output of users simultaneously receiving Slovene families and eldery that come to fill it. In this way the project will not be just for the Syrian community but also bring many benefits to the local community of Skofljica, filling their program needs as a high school, a hospital , a theater and a whole new economic and social center that connects the all area, suppressing the industrial zone as a barrier to Barje .

At the beginning of the semester we were approached with a very unusual theme, but that increasingly need more attention in architecture. The aim of projecting a refugee camp in Slovenia, in the small village of Skofljica to tackle the major social conflicts that nowadays tend to exist around the world, is an innovative and ambitious project that shows the evolution of thought in architecture of growing concern over the living conditions of the ‘other half ‘ and focused increasingly on issues of great social importance . The analysis of factors such as political, economic, social, and geographic location were essential for the choice of Syria as the country to be accepted by us for such a special project like this. Due to the civil war have died more than 100 thousand syrians, and about two million now abandoned the country looking for help in refugee camps that neighboring countries provide, but this camps do not provide good living conditions, with greatest problems as overcrowding, lack of water, food and sanitation.

In the third phase, when the Syrian refugees will be able to leave back to their country, nother new use is planned for this place. The housing will be offered to young families and elderly people. The main school will become a high school for Ĺ kofljica, the mosque will be transformed to a theatre due to the shape affinity, and the hospital will gradually turn to a dialysis centre connected to the hospitals network of Ljubljana. The apartments near to the medical building will be used for receiving patients that will need daily or constant care.

When thinking in the refugees’ arrival, it has been decided that they will come in waves, so there will be a need of some structures that will allow the growth in size and number along with the people coming. PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK EDUCATIONAL PRODUCT With that assumption in mind it has been thought the idea of two types of public buildings: A-type and B-type. PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK EDUCATIONAL PRODUCT - A-type of building is the type that will allow growing and spreading, also adjusting to the needs of the people. Its main characteristic besides growing is that the spreading will only be allowed under the roofing system, which will make things easier with the whole construction, and by the way, protecting the building out of the decided places. - The B-type buildings will also be public buildings, but the main difference from the A-type is, that while the A-type will spread under the roof, the B-type will be fixed in its size and shape and it will also be only attached to the roof, never going under it. These buildings are the hospital, school and mosque.

When analysing the site, it has been decided how much people the site will be able to handle. Following the basic rules of the urbanism, spaces that will be pleasant and useful have been tried to achieve. It is predicted that half of the site will have an open common space use like roads, parks, playgrounds and green spaces. Around 2250 people are expected, so 30 000 m2 will be used for the housing. Hospital’s size is based on the research made regarding the type of the centre and the needs, therefore the altogether size is 6 000 m2. The mosque’s and the school’s size are calculated based on the percentage of prayers and children expected to come. Around 900 regular prayers will be attending the services, and taking into account that 1m2 is needed, 1000m2 are planned to be for the mosque. Almost 30% of the whole population are school attending children, so that sums up to around 2500m2 for the school use. Public buildings that will spread under the roof will take the left over space, that is 11 000m2 for market stands and various workshop spaces.

PCC Skofljica is the area of the industrial zone not far away from the village center. Location customized 106 000 m2 and adjacent to the industrial zone and the natural park Ljubljansko barje. As we already have presented in the analyzes , our main task is to set up refugee settlements, that after 5 years become the sustainable village for eldery people and young families . The main feature of our project is a street roof under which is located public program . The roof connects village of Šofljica with the newly planned settlements . Location is determined by the 3 main dominants ; school, hospital and center for religion (future culture center). School and hospital are located at one corner of each location . Due to such positions they have good transport links and determined clear exit and entry point of the village, as well. Religious center is located in the heart of the planned village. The main and largest element on our site are housing units for refugees or later for young families and eldery people . People of the village will come into that area in phases during the whole 5 years. Therefore housing units are radially spread around public program. Each unit has dimensions of 8x10 m2. The indentation of units we have obtained interesting street extensions, squares, spaces for socializing. 10-15 houses together form a community that is shared gardens , semi-public street and cooperate with each other. Houses are devided into different parts; two big area near the schol and at the border with Ljubljansko barje, area near hospital where are specialized houses for ill people and at least the area above the hospital, where crops are not included. Those parts are conected with two main bulevard and with green part and the small river in the middle. The main characteristic of our urbanism is that there is not excat form of the street, otherwise there are houses which form different spaces, streets, public, semi – public and private area.

Cadeira para o nosso País Chair for our Country Novembro/November 2013
This work had the aim to represent our countries using such a comum object as a chair. From the Angolan mothers came the inspiration for this chair. In their back there is always a son, embrassed by the city sounds and the mother songs. It was this comfortable lap that i tried to recreate through a chair, using materials as african tissue, always colorfull with their drawings and steel for shaping the structure.
