June 2012

Dear Reader, The evidence of progressive change was abundant this spring as the campus was full of celebration (and extraordinary weather). With our continued commitment to share all of our on-campus news, we once again bring you an abbreviated look at what is happening at your Adrian College. Momentum continues on campus - from the newly constructed pergola over Commencement Plaza, to the addition of a Sports Management major through the Business Department. New academic spaces, dynamic off-season additions to Arrington Ice Arena, and famous faces performing live are only a few of the reasons it continues to be a great day to be a Bulldog. Of course, this is simply a preview of things to come; your next edition of Contact Magazine is due in mailboxes later this summer. In the meantime, we invite you to preview just a few campus happenings and success stories that keep Adrian College among the best. As always we welcome your comments, suggestions, and feedback. Enjoy your summer season!

SPRING NOTES

Congratulations to the Class of 2012! The College’s largest graduating class accepted their diplomas on April 29, 2012. Over 300 graduates walked across the stage before more than 3,000 attendees. For the second year, Commencement was held on the mall at the center of campus. Dr. Hildreth Houston Spencer, Legacy Friend, Educator, and Philanthropist was recognized for her contributions to the College, and was awarded the honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters.

TURF IN THE ARENA Arrington Ice Arena at Adrian College now offers a different kind of venue during the offseason as artificial turf by Turfix was installed in the ice rink. This unique addition offers facility use for purposes beyond ice skating like soccer and lacrosse, from April through late June. Thanks, in part, to a generous donor contribution, the installation of artificial grass will expand the opportunities year-round for students, staff and the local community.

To learn more about facility availability or rental information, please contact Lesley Carson at the Office of Conferences via phone (517) 264-3156 or email lcarson@adrian.edu.

BASEBALL The Adrian College baseball team captured its fourth straight Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) title this spring and also won the inaugural MIAA Tournament, hosted at Nicolay Field on campus. The Bulldogs defeated Albion, Trine and Hope to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight season. The team went 2-2 during regional play falling to eventual national champion Marietta College. The team set a new school record with 37 wins. TRACK AND FIELD The Adrian College track and field program had two student-athletes advance to the NCAA Outdoor Division III Nationals in California in May. Kelsea Sellers ran in the 100 meter dash and finished 13th. Sellers was attempting to become a multi All-American after being named an indoor All-American in the 60 meters back in March. Sellers finished 4th in the 60 meters at indoor nationals. Chad Allemon also ran in the 400 meter run at outdoor nationals and placed 16th in his preliminary race.
