Mission Statement

What They’re Saying

Adrian College, a liberal arts College in the United Methodist tradition, is committed to the pursuit of truth and to the dignity of all people. Through active and creative learning in a supportive community, students are challenged to achieve excellence in their academic, personal, and professional lives, and to contribute to a more socially just society.

“My professors were very knowledgeable. In fact, at times I felt like I was in over my head. That challenge really helped me grow over four years. My experience was excellent because my professors knew me personally and were very supportive – they used their expertise to help me find a way to reach my goals.” -Janet Creque, Adrian graduate “You can’t put a price tag on one-on-one interaction. I went to a bigger school and sat in lecture halls with hundreds of students. The difference we can make in our students’ lives goes so far beyond that.” -Robin Bott, Adrian professor “There’s no comparison to an undergraduate experience at a small, liberal arts college. Adrian students discover the world of ideas in small classes, with professors who work with them personally. I’m convinced that it is the absolute best preparation for graduate school or a career.” -Melissa Stewart, Adrian professor

We make every effort to help students get exactly where they want to go, and sometimes help them figure out where that is.” -Professor Keith McCleary, faculty president

Pre-professional Programs

Pre-art Therapy Program How can the powerful tool of art be used to help people better understand themselves and their world? The pre-art therapy program will help you learn how. Internships are an important part of the program, because that is where you’ll learn how to apply what you’ve learned about the main fields of art – painting, ceramics, and drawing – to actual clients. You will develop a sophisticated portfolio that demonstrates your mastery of imagery – a mastery that will one day allow you to facilitate the healing imagery of the people you work with. Pre-art therapy will help you get into an advanced degree program and become an art therapist. The flexibility of the program allows you to major in art and minor in psychology, or vice versa. Adrian students have a 100 percent acceptance rate in art therapy at Wayne State University, and have attended Vermont College (Norwich University), The University of Louisville, George Washington University, and New York University.

Pre-engineering Program The pre-engineering program at Adrian College is a two-year program in science, computer, and mathematics designed to prepare students for entrance into the third year of engineering school. It includes courses required by the engineering accrediting association for all engineering schools and all programs. Students who complete it can transfer to the engineering school of their choice. Adrian College also offers a dual-degree option. Under this plan students take additional courses leading to a major in mathematics or one of the sciences during a third year of residency before they transfer. Upon completion of the engineering degree, a degree is also issued from Adrian College. Adrian students have attended the engineering schools at University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Michigan Technological University, as well as others in Michigan and other states.

Pre-architecture Program Adrian College offers a dual degree program with Washington University in St. Louis. You’ll spend three years at Adrian for basic studies in design science, mathematics, and liberal arts followed by one year at Washington for specialized study in architecture. By starting your program at Adrian, you’ll have the advantage of a liberal arts education, including communication and critical-thinking skills, so you’ll be very prepared to enter the last year of architecture school. Once you have completed your bachelor’s degree at Washington University, it is possible to remain there in the Masters of Architecture program. Pre-architecture students generally major in studio art or interior design.

Pre-health Sciences If you are interested in one of the following careers, then Adrian’s Pre-Health Sciences Program and Pre-Veterinary program will put you on the right path: ✸ Dentist ✸ Doctor ✸ Optometrist ✸ Podiatrist ✸ Physician’s Assistant ✸ Pharmacist ✸ Veterinarian The Pre-Health and Pre-Vet programs provide suggested coursework to help you succeed in professional school after Adrian. You can major in anything you choose, although you are encouraged to major in one of the physical or natural sciences. There are major advantages to choosing Adrian for your undergraduate work in these areas. You will build a versatile degree with the rock-solid foundation you need in biology, chemistry, physics and math to succeed in your professional program of choice. You will know your professors, who will work with you individually to learn your field and its market, develop research opportunities, and find internships. In addition, you will have an edge on applicants from other schools thanks to the breadth of your liberal arts education. You will take a year of English, and are encouraged to take courses such as ethics, psychology and sociology that will help you in health science. More importantly, you will distinguish yourself as someone with the valuable ability to write and think critically. Historically, Adrian has had an excellent placement record for graduate and medical school, due in large part to how your professors know you and your strengths when writing letters of recommendation. Graduates have attended Ohio State University, Duke University, Michigan State University, Medical College of Wisconsin, Indiana University, Wayne State University, University of Michigan and others.

There are three influences that have helped me attain success as a physician: my parents, my medical school, and Adrian College. Adrian gave me a sound preparation for medical school, and my four years as an undergraduate were probably the best of my life.” -Dr. Robin Arrington Jr., Medical Director of Total Health Care, a Health Maintenance Organization that serves 300 centers in Michigan and 70 centers in Florida

Pre-physical Therapy Program Adrian graduates have a high rate of success through the Pre-physical Therapy Program. With a curriculum that is similar to pre-health sciences, this program prepares you for graduate school in physical therapy, occupational therapy, or exercise physiology. You’ll take courses in biology, physics, psychology, computer science, math, and philosophy. Graduates from the program have later attended graduate school for physical therapy at Northwestern University, Oakland University, the Medical University of Ohio, Andrews University, University of Michigan – Flint, Saint Louis University, Grand Valley State University, and others.

Pre-seminary Program The Pre-Seminary program is a pre-professional trajectory that includes a vocational discernment student group and academic guidance. Both women and men are active in the Major Cole Association, and several different denominations are represented. The Major Cole group is one of the ten official spiritual life groups at the college and represents some (but definitely not all) of the many students directly involved in spiritual life on campus. Recent graduates from our Pre-Seminary emphasis have gone on to Duke Divinity School, The Methodist Theological School in Ohio, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Anderson School of Theology, and other graduate theological schools. Adrian was the very first of about 100 United Methodist-related undergraduate institutions invited to pilot a Pre-Seminary/Graduate Level partnership with Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois.
