2012
Dear Reader, With the end of the year upon us, so begins anew. As has been the case in recent years, there is much to be excited about at Adrian College. We bring you some of the extraordinary news from across our 132-acre textbook. From social-networking to the latest campus tweets, we continue to reach out to you, our reader, to engage you in your AC. We reflect on a year of momentous growth (one of record enrollment), of new champions, and of making history in London. We acknowledge the continued expansion of academic programs, facilities, and even athletic opportunities. As we continue to share these dynamic changes, both in print and electronically, we acknowledge that none of this would be possible without the continued support of our extraordinary alumni, donors, and friends. In this spirit of giving, we give our thanks to all of those who have made the Adrian College impact possible. In welcoming 2013, we look to a new year and a glimpse of the exciting things to come. Enjoy this edition of “C” Magazine as a preview of what’s happening on campus, and watch for your print edition of CONTACT in the coming months. As always, we welcome your comments, thoughts, and stories. We wish you the happiest of holidays -- from our family to yours.

fall NOTES
A New Era, A New Champion The Adrian College football team defeated Albion College, 20-19, in overtime at SprankleSprandel Stadium on Saturday, November 3, clinching their first outright MIAA title since 1983 and advancing to the NCAA Division III playoffs for the first time since 1988. The last time Adrian had at least a share of the conference title was during the 1997 season. The Bulldogs completed a 9-2 season in 2012 tying the school record for wins with the 1980 team. Fourteen players were named to either the First or Second All-MIAA teams. This November, Adrian hosted their first ever NCAA Division III football playoff contest, but lost in the first round to Franklin College. The Bulldogs finished the regular season ranked 25th in Division III.

“ Is Intellect a Liability in Ministry?” ev. Christopher P. Momany, D.Min. ‘84 R Adrian college Chaplain
“How did we get to this point – where a penchant for theological rigor is discouraged among the church and scholars with little interest in church life appoint themselves stewards of theological ideas? This problem will not be resolved by convening gatherings of church bureaucrats and university administrators. That has already been tried. The kind of alienation I am addressing is deeper. The church needs a more robust intellectual life, and the academy WWW needs to get over its hostility toward the church.”

On and off the campus Track and explore Following the success of an ongoing partnership to study the environment of S.E. Michigan while benefiting science, technology and math education, Michigan International Speedway and Adrian College have developed plans for science-related field trips at NASCAR’s fastest racetrack.
In Recognition of Unparalleled Performance On October 29, a festive occasion amidst the inclement weather, the Adrian College Marching Band accepted their formal invitation from the Lord Mayor of Westminster, Catherine Longworth. The group was scouted and selected from an exclusive list to take part in the annual New Year’s Day parade in London, this year recognized as a part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Described as “the greatest parade” at over twice the size of the acclaimed Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in New York, the New Year’s Day Parade is watched by millions in person and via television broadcast. The parade will conclude in the heart of London in Westminster. The Lord Mayor expressed her enthusiasm at having the band perform at the upcoming festivities. “In recognition of an unparalleled reputation for performance abilities, we extend this invitation to the Adrian College Bulldog Marching Band to participate.” The formal invitation was presented to Dr. Marty Marks, Director of Bands after which gifts were shared with dignitaries. The Adrian College Band will spend a week immersed in the culture of the United Kingdom both before and following the conclusion of the main event.

The project was primarily funded by MIS Cares, the philanthropic effort of the speedway, and other resources. The Ryan Newman Foundation, fronted by NASCAR driver and environmentalist Ryan Newman, is also a supporter.
