ne of the important questions with any college search is, “Can I afford it?” That question is especially common when students consider private colleges. The answer? Take a hard look at Adrian, and you might find that our cost is as low – or even lower – than state institutions. While students and their parents sometimes suffer from “sticker shock” when they see the cost of full tuition, they’re often very surprised to find out how much they’ll actually pay once they work with our Financial Aid staff. Academic scholarships are renewable annually and range from $28,000 to $92,000 over four years. Add to that other forms of aid that are often available and the price begins to drop even more. Another factor is that Adrian is committed to helping you graduate in four years. At some schools, you end up paying for five to six years of tuition. Of course, it’s hard to put a price tag on what you gain at Adrian. You will spend four years in small classes, forming personal relationships with world-class professors, and getting involved. Financial Aid and the FAFSA Full-time tuition and room and board cost for the 2008-2009 academic year was $30,990. There is no additional out-of-state tuition cost. The tuition rate is the same for students from all states. How do I apply for aid? To apply for financial aid, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon after January 1 as possible and before March 1. Visit www.fafsa.ed.gov to learn more. The FAFSA results are sent to each of the requested colleges. What types of financial aid are available? The two types of financial aid are gift aid and self-help aid. Gift aid does not need to be repaid, and may be merit-based, such as with academic or fine arts scholarships, or need-based, in the form of institutional, state, or federal grants. Self-help aid may be in the form of student loans or work-study awards. What if I don’t think I’ll qualify for financial aid? Often, people mistakenly believe that they will not qualify for aid based on the experiences of neighbors or co-workers. Financial aid exists, in part, to bridge the gap between the cost of state institutions and private colleges. Unless you know you will be expected to pay more than the cost of Adrian College, you should file the FAFSA.
