A Message from Gary Valade

I

have been a member of the Adrian College Board of Trustees for 15 years, including several years as board chair. Occasionally people ask me why I made the choice to get involved in such a direct and personal way.

The reason why is because I believe in the values and opportunites offered at this College. I have found that the education available here is second to none, and that there is virtually no limit to the wonderful things that our graduates are able to accomplish once they have the chance to try. At Adrian, the focus is always on the students. I am proud to know that the educational opportunities we offer are contributing to a better future. Flip through these pages and I think you’ll begin to see just what a difference Adrian graduates are making in the world. Best wishes through your college decision process. Gary Valade Retired CFO, Daimler-Chrysler Member, Adrian College Board of Trustees

Mike Rogers U.S. Congressman Michigan’s 8th District, Brighton, Mich. Class Year: 1985 Accomplishments: Mike served in the U.S. Army, FBI, and Michigan Senate as well as serving as the Michigan Senate Majority Floor Leader before running for Congress in 2000. At Adrian he played football and worked as a DJ for WVAC. As an FBI Special Agent, he served on the organized crime and public corruption unit in Chicago. He is currently a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and travels extensively in the Middle East, especially in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

“During my time at AC, academics and a variety of campus activities strengthened my belief that public service comes in many forms and that no matter how small or large a deed or event, its influence can reverberate throughout a community, across a state and even across a nation. The entire faculty and administrative staff helped me understand that public service is an honor and an opportunity to make positive change in the lives of those we serve. My Adrian experience taught me the value of an attitude based on principles and commitment.”

Osman Antwi-Boateng Doctoral Student, Political Science and International Relations University of Delaware Class Year: 2001 Accomplishments: Osman was the first African to ever earn a master’s degree in Security Studies (International Security) from Georgetown University’s Edmund Walsh School of Foreign Service. He also received academic scholarships to support his graduate studies at Ohio University-Athens where he earned a master’s degree in International Affairs (Development & Communication). “Coming to the U.S. from Africa for the first time, Adrian College helped me navigate the huge culture shock that awaited me by offering an intimate academic environment.”

Shelley Brown Milano Executive Vice President, General Counsel Starbucks, Seattle

Class year: 1978 Accomplishments: As a key executive and strategic business attorney, Milano has been on the leadership teams of several top corporations, including Honda of America and, most recently, Eddie Bauer. She was awarded the first-ever Excellence in Corporate Practice Award presented by the American Corporate Counsel Association. Why did you choose Adrian? I think a small, liberal arts school like Adrian is just about the best college experience you can get. It was definitely right for me. The personal attention and opportunities to grow were an excellent preparation for my future. I continue to value the guidance and mentoring I received from my Adrian professors.

“The life lessons I experienced at Adrian were just as important as the excellent academic education I received. Adrian provided opportunities and opened doors for me. It was through Adrian that I received the introduction to my first full-time job at Ford Motor Company. That first business position was the catalyst for my career. I am grateful for my Adrian experience.”

It provided a controlled learning environment with strong ethical values and multiple chances to succeed, a range of extracurricular activities and a strong Greek system.

“Adrian College provided a strong general education that I have been able to build on over the years and put into practice in the real world. The small school environment reinforced the importance and value of building relationships and drawing on them in my personal life and business life.”
