WELCOME A
s Jamaica prepares to celebrate its 50th year of independence, the Jamaica Dental Association welcomes you to our 48th Annual Convention in Montego Bay, Jamaica. We are ecstatic about this year’s programme that will be from February 15th to 18th on the grounds of the Iberostar Rose Hall Suites Hotel. We must continue to further our education and tweak our skills and what better environment to do so but - Montego Bay, Jamaica! This year we will review the basics and examine the new thought patterns in Caries whilst forging ahead to the future in Restorative with an emphasis on Aesthetics and Practice Management. This convention will be truly eclectic as for the first time in the Caribbean, Ergonomics with respect to Dentistry will be featured. The return of a dynamic and resourceful Periodontist will also enrich the already exciting and diverse event . This year we will also re-visit the pertinent subject matter of Infection Control. Our diversity will also be reflected in our Social Programme with the highlight being our “ Out of many One!.........” Jamaica Night, which will take place this year on the Beach of Iberostar. Be prepared for your palate to be tantalized and your feet to be dancing all night! In between lecturers you must visit the Hip Strip, go Scuba diving to see some of the many underwater caves, or play some golf at the pristine courses to be found in Montego Bay. Don’t forget to go horseback riding off into the sunset!
DR. KEMA WHITE
CHAIRMAN, 48TH JDA CONVENTION COMMITTEE 2012

t is an honor and privilege as President of the Jamaica Dental Association to extend a very warm welcome to all delegates attending our 48th National Convention. To our friends from oversees, it is my hope that your time on our blessed island will not only be productive but enjoyable and that you will experience the warmth of our people and true Jamaican hospitality. On behalf of all our members I wish you well.
DR. ERICA GORDON-VEITCH
PRESIDENT JDA
Since 1928, the Jamaica Dental Association has been the voice of the dental profession in Jamaica. The JDA has, over the years remained committed to advancing the interest of the profession and upholding and improving the highest standards of dental practice. Through numerous national outreach programs and collaboration with other members of the health profession, the JDA has been relentless in its efforts to promote oral health as an integral part of general health care. Continuing education is essential for the advancement of our noble profession. I anticipate a highly successful meeting and wish that you will be able to apply much of the new knowledge immediately to your professional lives. Congratulations to our very energetic convention chairperson, Dr. Kema White and her team. Your choice of our island paradise was a good one. Jamaica is celebrating its 50th year since independence, a major milestone in our history. It is my hope that you take time out to enjoy the many attractions that Jamaica has to offer. With very best wishes.•

he provision of preventative oral health care is one of the most important strategies for lowering the health costs of a country. It is estimated that some 90% of systemic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, pneumonia, bone and nerve damage, and birth defects, can be detected through oral examinations. Untreated dental diseases can be fatal; therefore dental hygiene is essential to general good health and can lengthen life. Good dental health will also reduce the load on health care facilities, reduce the number of lost man hours due to absences from work, and reduce national expenditure on this aspect of health care. Unfortunately, Jamaica is now experiencing a health care crisis as 80% of the population either cannot afford proper dental health services, or they do not recognize the importance of proper oral health hygiene. The scarcity of dental equipment and professionals has also aggravated the situation. At present the national ratio of dentist per population is 1:17,000 and the accepted standard is 1:2,500.
HIS EXCELLENCY SIR PATRICK ALLEN
GOVERNOR GENERAL
For the past 48 years, the Jamaica Dental Association has sought to improve learning conditions, encourage persons to join the profession, increase public awareness, and ensure that local practitioners remain abreast of the changes and advancement in the international industry. I commend the Association in what has been achieved in improving health literacy, and promoting the value of regular, professional oral health. As you convene in this 48th Annual Conference, I encourage you to search for strategies which will increase the number of dental professionals, improve equipment and facilities, widen dental health insurance coverage, and thereby bring the nation’s dental health to an acceptable level. I trust that this 48th Annual Convention will continue to build on the foundation of excellence and innovation, and I wish you all the best in your series of activities. •

beautiful and healthy smile is an important ingredient for success and self-esteem; it communicates confidence, attractiveness and friendliness. A beautiful smile is usually the sign of healthy teeth and gums. Most of us owe our beautiful smiles and healthy teeth to our dental professionals. Research has shown that there is a direct link between the state of person’s oral health and their overall health. That should not be a surprise as the mouth is the gateway to our bodies. We are proud of the work of our dentists and other dental professionals. Many of you have gone beyond the call of duty to help the less fortunate in our country and we appreciate your effort.
THE MOST HONORABLE PORTIA SIMPSON MILLER
PRIME MINISTER
As you celebrate your 48th Annual Conference with the theme “Out of Many One”, I am cognisant of the challenges which you face in this arm of our health sector, but I encourage you to continue finding innovative ways to make good dental care available and accessible to all of our people at more affordable rates. This will give the many in our Jamaican Family who cannot afford to go to the dentist an opportunity to have their teeth maintained and not have to suffer the pain associated with having decayed teeth. Heartiest congratulations and I wish for the members of the Jamaica Dental Association a successful Conference as you continue to serve the Jamaican people with distinction. •

I
wish to extend my heartiest congratulations to the Jamaica Dental Association for hosting their 48th Annual Dental Convention. I am particularly pleased with this milestone achievement because it demonstrates the high level of commitment and passion that the members have in raising the standards of dental services in Jamaica. There has been a marked increase in the number of dental visits made to primary health care facilitates over the last few years. In 2007, the figure stood at 162,765, moved to 185,615 in 2008 and further increased to 209,134 in 2009. With a renewed focus on primary health care, this Ministry will aim to improve access to dental services at this level in ensuring that patients receive quality care. Good oral hygiene is a critical requirement for overall wellbeing so emphasis must be placed on this aspect of health promotion. This becomes even more important as we are grappling with an increase in non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which are now the leading causes of death. Oral diseases share common risk factors with NCDs including unhealthy diet, tobacco use, and harmful alcohol use. The burden of oral diseases and other chronic diseases can be decreased simultaneously by addressing these common risk factors. Our chronic diseases prevention and control programme must therefore be integrated with oral health activities. We cannot successfully tackle the growing problem of NCDs if we neglect oral health promotion.
HON DR. FENTON FERGUSON
MNISTER OF HEALTH
I take this opportunity to welcome all the lecturers and participants to this convention. Once again I commend the JDA for organizing this event that provides an important avenue for continuing education of dental surgeons and other health care professionals and fosters excellence in the delivery of dental care in Jamaica.•

he quality of health service delivery is one of those areas of national development that has grown leaps and bounds in Jamaica over the past few decades, both in quality and access. Indeed, we owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the many dedicated men and women who have given of themselves as dental practitioners in service to nation. The members of the Jamaica Dental Association (JDA) are no exception. Whilst the JDA concentrates its efforts primarily on professional development and the welfare of its members, individual members, as professionals in the increasingly competitive and dynamic field of dental medicine, are charged with the task of harnessing the requisite skill sets that will allow them to remain on the cutting edge. It is your dynamism and competitiveness that in turn, continue to usher-in higher standards in dental surgery and overall improvements in the quality of dental service delivery across Jamaica.
THE HONORABLE ANDREW HOLNESS
OPPOSITION LEADER
It is with this in mind that I take great pleasure in sharing with your association on the occasion of its 48th Annual Dental Convention. I proudly salute the stellar contribution the JDA has made over the years in helping to shape a dental care system of which we can all be proud. The Jamaican people place considerable value on your collective effort. As you assemble at the convention, I trust that you will take time to reflect on your achievements over the years, contemplate areas that warrant improvement, facilitate meaningful exchange amongst yourselves as professionals and most importantly, redouble your resolve to play a pivotal role in lifting standards of health service delivery in this country for the benefit of every man, woman and child. I am especially heartened by the fact that the convention will provide a forum for continued professional development and exposure to international best practices. With international lecturers set to address local as well as international dental surgeons and auxiliaries, I urge every participant to make full use of the knowledge imparted and engage the presenters in enlightening and robust debate, with a view to assimilate lessons learnt at your respective places of work. To the extent that the JDA grasps this tremendous opportunity with both hands, it will hold vistas for the advancement of dental medicine in Jamaica, not only in terms of the practice of dental surgery itself, but also in terms of technology and research as well. Wishing you all the very best over the 4-days of debate and professional exchange at the convention and beyond.
