Leading Faith-based Schools: key challenges and issues Tuesday 1st July 2014 - 5.00pm - 7.00pm Room 537 Level 5 at the Institute of Education, University of London, 20 Bedford Way, London WC1H 0AL The London Centre for Leadership in Learning (LCLL) is pleased to invite you to a conversation about faith-based leadership with Professor Gerald Grace and headteachers Dr Richard Wilkin and Anthea Kenna. The session will be chaired by Professor Peter Earley of LCLL. The pressures on leaders of faith schools are arguably greater than those on other school leaders, by virtue of the dual accountability they are subject to from religious as well as secular authorities. The session will ask: • • • •

What are the challenges facing faith school leaders as they attempt to educate within a religious ethos? What does 'distinctiveness' mean when applied to faith schools? How well equipped are faith school leaders to carry out their distinctive responsibilities? How might we best engage in succession planning?

With faith schools educating such a significant proportion of schoolchildren, their popularity shows no sign of diminishing. The churches face the challenge of providing adequate training for current leaders, as well as ensuring that the next generation is equipped to lead in due course. After three short presentations the session will be run as a conversation with ample opportunities for participants to engage in discussion with the three speakers. • • •

Professor Gerald Grace is well known for his work on Catholic education and leadership and is currently Director of the Centre for Research and Development in Catholic Education (CRDCE). Mrs Anthea Kenna is headteacher of The Cathedral School in Chelmsford and has experience of headship in three very different CoE schools. Dr Richard Wilkin is headteacher of Brentwood Ursuline Convent High School and was previously the headteacher of one of the few mixed faith schools in England.

A short discussion paper will be circulated to all participants before attending the seminar.

The event is free to LCLL members and £10 for non-members. To apply, use the electronic booking form linked here - http://www.ioe.ac.uk/LCLL_Event_booking_form.pdf
