BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (HONOURS) IN ARCHITECTURE THEORIES OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBANISM (ARC61303/ARC2224)

SYNOPSIS: REACTION PAPER (AUGUST 2016) [10 MARKS] NAME: KAN JIA WEI ADRIAN ID: 0319384 LECTURER: MR NICHOLAS TUTORIAL TIME: 4PM-6PM SYNOPSIS NO: 4 READER TITLE: TOWARDS A CRITICAL REGIONALISM AUTHOR: KENNETH FRAMPTON The extraction of Kenneth Frampton’s “Towards A Critical Regionalism” focuses on a specific issue that presides in gaining the ideal of critical regionalism. The two chapter extraction, one which mentions of focuses on the cultural and natural aspect of the issue, while the other centers towards more of the visual versus tactile aspect which the author believes are instrumental towards achieving critical regionalism. The first chapter of the two, culture versus nature, was mentioned on how many influences of an architecture would determine the identity and culture of the said building, thus providing an identity to the language of the current architecture style which has a global appeal but lost its local allure as a result. The writer also brings forward the ideological believes of philosopher Heidegger and his etymology which the write feels that through the focus of culture, context, and nature would align closer to what the great philosopher has mentioned time and time again. The writer further goes on explaining many contextual elements that provide a site or building with an identity, from the usage of light in galleries to the implementations and usage of a humble wi ndow. The writer then ends the chapter with reference to architectural historian Stanford Anderson’s extraction on the concept ok Tektonik and how it influences architecture. The second chapter of the extraction, the visual versus the tactile, refers to the ability or the nature of human beings that associate things or events with their sensory organs. In which, their sight and touch. The writer explains how throughout the ages how visual and tactile was used to seduce the user into architecture, and how the usage of either sensory organs is different from each different architectural era. Hence, he ends with a paragraph on how critical regionalism would seek to complement the visual experience with a new approach to address the lost tactile experience of humans in this era of architecture. Personally, I found the writer’s ideas and intentions to be sincere, logical, sensical and valid. However, the process in which he undertakes to get that message across is far too complicated for the average reader and it gives off a vibe that these writers or thinkers are constantly stuck in their own bubble oblivious to the real world in creating content whilst trying to look like they know it all, being borderline pretentious.
