EFFERVESCENT MUSIC ARC 4612L (FAL/ SPR 2023) INSTRUCTOR: ROBERT ALEXANDER // 30 WEEKS
LATTC’s new proposed program is located on the corner of S Grand Ave and W Washington Blvd. The project aims to be a music education center that is paired with trade school facets such as hands-on learning. The effort would be a collaboration between LATTC and Los Angeles Philharmonic. LATTC’s new education center is imagined to be an extension of the college for either creating or repairing classical (orchestral) instruments. Experiential learning would involve craftsmanship training in repairing instruments; direct education with carpentry, machine shop, and digital media for tuning would help supply the music conservatory with instruments that are operated on by students. Proposing a music conservatory would allow for diversification of areas where classical music would more traditionally be found. An insular program with history of only being practiced or appreciated by the wealthy would be brought to a lesser affluent area: music accessibility for Historic South Central would greatly widen. An inward looking program to be shared and experienced outward. Musicians are welcomed into the various to set up their equipment and create faux concerts/ orchestras for a variety of visitors.

Located on the corner of S Grand Ave and W Washington Blvd, the project aims to be an architectural billboard for a new LATTC music conservatory. The site is located 2 miles south down the same stretch of road where other music conservatories and performance spaces are located including: the Colburn School of Music and Walt Disney Concert Hall, house of the LA Phil. Fronting the Grand/ LATTC Metro blue line rail, passengers would be able to view the billboard that pertains to the new program. Two beacons housing the concert halls would break the mold of the building, being tall enough to be seen from the Santa Monica Freeway. ACADEMIC | FALL/ SPRING 2022/ 23

CAMP SANDCRAWLER ARC 4031L (FALL 2022) INSTRUCTOR: MICHAEL FOX// 5 WEEKS
Joshua Tree Residential Education Experience (JTREE) reached out to create a relationship with Cal Poly Pomona in an effort to develop concepts for a science camp in Joshua Tree National Park. JTREE is a non-profit organization that seeks to establish and operate a youth-oriented residential environmental education program to: 1) fulfill the park’s long-term education objectives, 2) complement the park’s existing education partnerships and indicatives, and 3) enhance the park’s robust K-12 day-use education program. The project was completed in collaboration with other peers: Saif Altai, Miguel Vazquez, Javier Sanchez Torres. Initial concept of the project includes spatial and social hierarchy of program. The concept is represented by an AI generated image (DALL-E) that exhibits how a glass bottle is shattered on the desert sand. There are larger shards and smaller broken up shards that represent the scaled social groupings.

The staff cabins allow for camp leaders to have separate space to relax after full camp days. The residents will have individual bedrooms, but will share the same common spaces like bathrooms and kitchen areas. Staff will have their own campfire and outdoor areas away from the larger clusters of site activity and student cabins.

Camp Sandcrawler’s dining hall also serves as the main building of the campus. Following the concept, the dining hall contains various spatial moments that create different social grouping scales. The renders show that there are large gathering areas for the children during lunch but also more intitmate spaces. These include coves for one to two children to occupy themselves or eat their meals in solitude.

MIXED USE APARTMENT COMPLEX ARC 3021L (SPRING 2021) INSTRUCTOR: YASUSHI ISHIDA // 8 WEEKS
A contrast to context was the main focus of a new mixed use apartment complex to be developed on the intersection of N Prospect Avenue and Vermont Avenue. Glancing at the site plan, most buildings are single story, white rectangular boxes. The unique form of the complex not only provides an iconic view of a housing project, but aids in developing a stronger sense of community. The scenario derived for the housing complex is directed toward the homeless or low-income individuals. As seen in the diagram above, the massing takes on two L-shaped bars over two other bars that make up the commercial/retail level. Framing composition for the mixed used complex is Type V over podium construction (type 1A) where the podium level houses a shopping network and exclusive residential amenities in the left and right bar respectively. Residents would have the opportunity to be employed at the retail level where they can be self-sustainable. The two housing bars are bridged on the second podium level where a monumental stair invites passersby and its residents into a public communal area.

Two L-shaped bars allow for program to be broken up further. Top right bar features the retail level and the second massing takes on rehabilitation program and resident gym. The cavity that is created from the two separated program blocks allows for: communal area as stated and back of house program. The cargo loading bay for transport trucks also forms a shortcut between the two major roads. The roof features four bands that oscilate at different elevations to create skylights that bleed natural light into residential units and the exterior corridors. A theme of triangles can be seen with the modular roofing, jigsaw pattern balconies, and perforation patterns. Facade materiality includes steel HSS framing for balconies, concrete paneling, and perforated metal panels for light and sound diffusion.
