Interactive Pavilion DIT Grangegorman Sport Complex 4th Year Joint Project with Michal Nitychoruk The most important elements of sport is the interaction with others. The ethos of our project is to elevate the interaction not only with the students, but also the located community. The project name Interactive Pavilion suggests that we like to express and enhance the interaction through a pavilion type of building form. Sports activity requires a large volume of space, but we felt that a mega size sport arena is not appropriate scale to encourage that kind of interaction. So we decided to split the sport complex into 3 different types of pavilions in order to allow easy and direct access for the audience. But also by taking advantage of the natural slope of the site, we decided to have a muilti-use changing room so all of the sportsman and athletes can communicate and interacts. It creates a parallel universe for both parties to enjoy the most direct experience of sport.

Site Plan /Site Analysis The drawing on the left is showing the area around the campus and the location of our site. The bottom drawing shows the locations of different sport facilities around the area. It indicates that the area around the campus is lacking a major sport facilitates to serve and accommodate the needs of both the community and students.

Master plan Competition
Diagram showing connection between the routes and the main square
The Sport complex was never fully resolved in the Grangegorman master plan. The original proposal of having a underground multi-sport would require a very unrealistic budget. The second option that was proposed by the development agency was to place the sport complex on the opposite side of the campus, which would separate the close link with the pitches. So our initial idea was to relocate the sport complex with the main square and the sport fields. The concept was to create a permeable and direct contact between sport actives and public.

One of the biggest challenge of this project which we wanted to achieve was to design in a way in which people can wander around the buildings and observe athletes practicing sports without interrupting them and making them feel watched. To create the most wonderful and enjoyable walk through the site, we decided to split the complex into three main buildings and place them on different levels. Mixture of soft and hard surfaces fills in the spaces between buildings and creates diversity and unique atmosphere to each of them.

Circulation Diagram By splitting the circulation into public and athletes, it allows the audience to enjoy the game without going through a long journey. It also make sure that the athletes can have a comfort and private space to prepare for their game.

Structures One of the main criticism about the project at the start was that the 3 different programs that we proposed does not feel like they were part of the same project. So apart from unifying them by one single changing room, we decided that we would design a structure system that can be shared across the entire project. We needed a structure system that can achieve large spans and also allows natural sunlight into the space. So we came up with our own version of a waffle slab system. But we decided to have two different variation for the swimming pool and the multi-sport pavilion.

Galway Art Centre
3rd Year Our brief for this project was to design an Art Centre in an infill site within Galway city centre. The brief was to include an camber music hall and two gallery exhibition space(Temporary and Permanent) for paintings and sculptures. My initial idea was to have a tribal height open plan exhibition space with a circular drum shaped auditorium that serve as a music hall, as well as the central circulation for the gallery. As the result of core of the design but as the design progress, the circular shaped auditorium cause many issue including the circulation and the leftover space created by the “drum. The auditorium become so dominate that it overshadows the gallery and other spaces. So it eventually evolved into a rectangular form. This project turn out to be very challenging for me as I was too engaged into the form itself. But I felt I gained a precious lesson as an architecture student.

STRUCTURE MODEL OF THE AUDITORIUM 24
The structure model on the previous page shows the reinforcement for the concrete and the pre-cast concrete columns for the auditorium. The structure is a hybrid of mass concrete and cast in-situ concrete system. In order to satisfy the requirement for the brief, the auditorium had to accommodate 250 seats and the circulation within. But due to the fact that the auditorium is the central piece of the scheme, every changes I make to the form would require adjustment of the entire plan. The different plans that are shown on the left is part of a very long process of the changes and adjustments that I attempt to provide more space for the gallery and circulation.

Turkey House This is one of the projects that I worked on during the internship in Michael Kelly Architect. The project was based in Tinode, Blessington, Co. Wicklow. The project is a renovation of a exsiting building. The project involves inserting two lanterns to introduce natrual light into the living room area.
