Benton Modern Text was first prepared by Font Bureau for the Boston Globe and the Detroit Free Press. Design and proportions were taken from Morris Fuller Benton’s turnof-the-century Century Expanded, drawn for ATF, faithfully reviving this epoch-making magazine and news text roman. The italic was based on Century Schoolbook.

Bodega Serif
Inspired by Font Bureau’s rapid success with the 1990 Bodega Sans, Greg Thompson designed Bodega Serif two years later. It duplicates the same weights and styles as the original in an alternative seriffed design, providing contrasting yet ingeniously related Art Deco textures.

Displaybaum was drawn as a headletter companion to Matthew Carter’s Newsbaum and Wiredbaum. All three faces derive from early seventeenth century work of J.E. Walbaum, punchcutter and typefounder at Goslar, then Weimar. Walbaum is said to have taught himself punchcutting, adding a more subtle and human touch to the rational designs of the Didots.

Transylvanian punchcutter Nicholas Kis cut a leading figure in 18th century Amsterdam. Series of his matrices survived at the Ehrhardt typefoundry. David Berlow takes full advantage of current techniques to produce these splendid display series to complement one of the great oldstyle texts.

Miller Headline
In 1997, Font Bureau released Matthew Carter’s Miller Text and Display, reviving typefaces cut in the early 19th century by Richard Austin in London for foundries in Glasgow — some of the first typefaces designed with newspapers in mind. The revival’s immediate popularity with newspapers lead to narrower custom headline styles for papers.

Relay reaches back to the middle of the last century for inspiration. In England, Edward Johnston and Eric Gill applied humanist proportions and shapes to the geometric sanserif and established a trend within European art deco. Cyrus Highsmith, a lifelong fan of the comics, has designed a spirited new series within this American tradition.

Generous curves above and below the straight-sided Railroad Gothic parallel those of Figgins’ elephantine Grotesques, lending both British and American series their monumental qualities. David Berlow has used this curious similarity to suspend a complete family of sans serifs between the two forms, a manly series of great dignity and presence.

With Tangier, Richard Lipton continues to explore the possibilities of the elegant Spencerian form in its infinite variety. Inspired by lettering on a catalog cover, Lipton developed this lively series, exuberant yet disciplined, with a black weight that pushes the boundaries for contrast in a script.
