La La Land is a 2016 American musical drama written and directed by Damien Chazelle. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone and starring as a musician and an aspiring actress who meet and fall in love in Los Angeles.

Some people may think this film is a clichÊ. Maybe it is. But it won so many prizes for some reason. There was no huge musicals produced since the 80’s and the audience missed them. Box office rankings and all the awards just are confirming this fact. One thing worth mentioning is that this film is magical - and not only thanks to wonderful performances of Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. It was amazingly produced with colour and light techniques, which are borrowed from the past and mixed into reality. First scene of the film shows full colours palette and it keep us charmed till the end. 5

Light. 6

Light use in the film is commonly known from old musicals. It makes the film stand out. At one moment we are following very realistic storyline of the heroes, close to many people, and after a while, we drift into the realm of musical magic. Use of spot light in important moments, where characters show their inner dilemmas, is a typical strategy used in theatre. We haven’t seen it on the silver screen for a while now. Why? Because it makes the movie unrealistic, but when it comes to La La Land - it makes it beautiful. Don’t forget about all those sunset scenes - they are the essence of a love story. 7

Jackie is a 2016 biographical drama film directed by Pablo LarraĂn. The film stars Natalie Portman as Jackie Kennedy, following her life after the 1963 assassination of her husband John F. Kennedy.

I was astonished. The techniques used in this film form an irresistible impression of closeness to the character’s story. Jackie remains in the centre of the frame for almost the entire film. She was seen as a wife of a president through all her life and now, it is the time for her to be in the limelight. It was beautify portrayed in the scene of a music concert. Not the president nor his brother are in the centre - Jackie is in the middle of the frame and the camera is panning towards her. Natalie Portman gave an unforgettable performance, which will be remembered for a long time. 11
