DUBROVNIK

Dubrovnik ‒ a Mediterranean Treasure

Did you know? Richard the Lionheart, King of England, came to Dubrovnik in the autumn of 1192, on his return from the crusades. He took shelter from a storm by the island of Lokrum.

In 1296 the Dubrovnik Republic built a sewerage system which is still in use.

The pharmacy in the Franciscan monastery in Dubrovnik has been working continuously since 1317.

The first quarantine in the world was established in Dubrovnik in 1377. Travellers arriving from areas infected with contagious disease were separated and held in the quarantine until they were proven to be healthy.

Dubrovnik passed a resolution abolishing slavery and forbidding the transportation of slaves on 27 January 1416, making it the first state in Europe to abolish slavery.

The Dubrovnik Old Town

Dubrovnik is more than a city. A perfect combination of past, present and future, of culture, heritage and natural beauty, it offers a unique experience and unforgettable holidays. No wonder it has become the latest must-see Mediterranean destination. At the southern extremity of Croatia’s long coastline, Dubrovnik is traditionally known as the jewel of the Adriatic, but it is in fact one of the great sights of the Mediterranean, rightly designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition to its natural beauty and rich history, there are cultural events and a diverse programme of attractions and activities in all seasons, making Dubrovnik the perfect destination for sightseeing, sport, cultural events or simply some fun in a beautiful Mediterranean setting. For long centuries Dubrovnik was an independent Republic, a proud cultural centre and an important Mediterranean trading power. It may have lost its political power but remains a centre of culture and tourism: a city of museums and galleries, famous for its Summer Festival, an international celebration of outstanding music and theatre. Add to all this the seductive charm of a balmy Mediterranean climate and coastal scenery of incomparable beauty, and you have a powerful magnet for international tourism: Dubrovnik.

The enchantment starts with the panoramic view of the Old Town of Dubrovnik, seen from the corniche road from the airport. Rare are the cities that can boast a comparable location, or such well preserved medieval walls. The combination is unique. The fortifications are there for a good reason, because conquerors have always been attracted to Dubrovnik for its beauty and wealth. It was no different in the last decade of the 20th century. Mercifully, the guns are silent now, and Dubrovnik’s walls teem not with soldiers, but tourists and open-air theatre performers. Half a million people visit the city every year, appreciating its fascinating museums. But Dubrovnik is a living museum, and a treasure trove of Baroque, Renaissance and medieval churches and palaces. The people of Dubrovnik are immensely proud of their city. They love their beautiful coastline, the sparkling emerald and sapphire hues of the clear sea as it crashes the rocks of countless lovely bays and coves, and the cliffs full of lush subtropical vegetation. And they

love the warm southern climate. Dubrovnik likes to sunbathe in winter, when the orange and lemon trees are in full bloom. There are more than 250 days of sunshine a year. The average temperature is 10°C in winter, and around 26°C in summer. Dubrovnik’s long history of hosting VIP visitors starts with Richard the Lionheart, crusader king of England, and the guest book includes crowned heads, statesmen, athletes, actors, artists, musicians. Edward and Mrs Simpson, Queen Elizabeth, King Olaf, Margaret Thatcher, Edward Kennedy, Taylor and Burton, Michael Douglas and Catharine Zeta Jones, Richard Gere, Nick Nolte and Tom Cruise .…. all have walked the shining marble Stradun. Many celebrities experience the city from their luxury yachts anchored in front of the island of Lokrum: Roman Abramovic, Paul Getty, Bill Gates, Caroline of Monaco, the King of Jordan and the Sultan of Oman are a few who value the privacy of their floating palaces. Oligarchs and humble backpackers alike, succumb to the seductive beauty of Dubrovnik.

The orphanage founded at the Convent of St. Claire in 1432 was one of the first in the world.

When the Minceta Tower was built in 1464, the builders did not have enough stones to complete the building. Everyone arriving from Gruz or Ploce was ordered to bring with them the heaviest stone they could carry.

Trsteno arboretum near Dubrovnik was founded in the 15th century and is the oldest arboretum in the world. The oldest plane trees are almost 400 years old.

The Dubrovnik maritime insurance law (“Ordo super assecuratoribus”, 1568) is the oldest such law in the world.

Dubrovnik’s navy in the 16th century consisted of 40,000 sailors and more than 180 large ships, and was one of the most powerful in the Mediterranean.

In Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice and Taming of the Shrew the term “argosy” is mentioned, meaning “a boat from Dubrovnik”.

The Dubrovnik Republic was the first country in the world to recognise the United States of America, in 1783.

Dubrovnik Summer Festival THEATRE The theatrical premieres will include Euripides' tragedy Medea, directed by the renowned Slovenian theatre director Tomaž Pandur, in collaboration with the Croatian National Theatre of Zagreb. One of Euripides' most intriguing and enigmatic pieces, Medea will be performed at Fort Lovrjenac, which – owing to its stratified network of corridors and terraces – becomes an ideal venue for unveiling the hidden corners of a female soul. In Büchner's masterpiece depicting the French Revolution, Danton's Death, one of the most awarded Croatian theatre directors, Oliver Frljić will attempt to reveal the connection between historic events and human destinies; the conditions of growth of the new order stemming from the French Revolution, and the fall of another order that had been inviolable for centuries - the Dubrovnik Republic. Saša Božić's authorial project The Miser: Dubrovnik Summer Festival, produced in collaboration with the Art Workshop Lazareti, explores memory as a source of a new theatrical play. The play is based on the Festival visitors' memories of the legendary play The Miser directed by Kosta Spajić: the meaning and effects of theatrical art. The repeat performances will include two last year's hits: Sophocles' Oedipus the King directed by Eduard Miler and Vlaho Stulli's Kate Kapuralica directed by Dario Harjaček. According to the long term tradition, the Festival will host the Lero Students Theatre and the first performance of Milan Milišić's play Moonlight for Lady Macbeth directed by Davor Mojaš.

MUSIC AND DANCE Festival’s audience eagerly awaits performance of renowned soloists: pianist and conductor of ArgentinianIsraeli origin Daniel Barenboim, pianists Pierre-Laurent Aimard and Arcadi Vodolos who will present themselves for the first time in Croatia with their recitals at the Rector's Palace, and also violin stars Giuliano Carmignola, Nigel Kennedy, and Ning Feng. Festival’s audience will enjoy numerous attractive concerts, such as those of the guitar quartet Los Romeros, the Freiburger Barockorchester as one of the world's finest Baroque ensemble, the Venetian Baroque Orchestra, the wind quintet led by the flutist Emmanel Pahud with the eminent Croatian horn player Radovan Vlatković, the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra featuring prestigious soloists and conductors and the Tango Project by the accordion player Richard Galliano with the Piazzolla Forever Septet. The prestigious Croatian artists will include the Porin Quartet, Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the great Dmitrij Kitajenko, Dubrovnikborn mezzo-soprano Janja Vuletić and world famous Croatian soloists: cellist Monika Leskovar, pianist Martina Filjak and clarinettist Marija Pavlović . After many seasons, the Festival programme comprises Mozart's Requiem performed by one of England's most popular choirs, The Choir of King's College Cambridge with Croatian Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra. The Festival will be closed by the gala opera concert in front of St Blaise's Church featuring the leading opera stars of today: soprano Inva Mula and baritone Leo Nucci accompanied by the Slovenian Philharmonic. Intriguing contemporary dance The Divine Comedy will be performed by the Budva City Theatre while the Lado Folklore Ensemble of Zagreb and the Linđo Folklore Ensemble of Dubrovnik will present traditional Croatian folk dances and songs.

This is the 8th year that Adriatic Luxury Hotels organize an entertainment music summer program of the very expressive name “Stars beneath the Stars”, for the city of Dubrovnik and its guests. The most attractive outside venues of the 5 star hotels – beaches, terraces, pools - serve as a breath taking open sceneries where concerts take place under the stars.

O M SI

AS M

There is an extensive list of prominent contemporary Croatian musicians who have performed within the program. Introduction of international music stars became a regular part of the program several years ago and since then we have gathered some internationally recognized musician and ‘tribute to’ bands that have succeeded to give an exotic flair into the program. The combination of international music from all genres (jazz, rock, pop, Portuguese fado, Cuban music etc.) and prestigious Croatian music performers made this music event one of the most visited in Dubrovnik. From this year, the beach of the Hotel Croatia became another site where ‘stars’ sing under the stars.

This summer, Adriatic Luxury Hotels proudly present:

NATALI DIZDAR INTRODUCING NATALI, THE GRAND OPENING OF THE 63rd DUBROVNIK SUMMER FESTIVAL

LI

JO S SA IPA C

Location: Carravelle Terrace, Grand Villa Argentina Date: July 10, 2012 Starting at: 9:00 pm Natali is one of the greatest young female performers in Croatia. Her tender but lush voice brings to mind great days of Ella Fitzgerald, Natalie Cole, reflecting as well the sentiment of Norah Jones, Diana Krall and numerous others. What a splendid way to spend this particular evening in Dubrovnik! Experience the grand opening of the 63rd Dubrovnik Summer Festival at the Caravelle terrace! These concerts (in praise of the Summer Festival) have always been a part of the traditional Stars beneath the Stars program, and were among the most visited events during the summer. You can enjoy your dinner while overlooking the fireworks, which are the highlight of the evening and can be beautifully seen from the Caravelle Restaurant terrace.

KLAPA (VOCAL GROUP) LIBAR GENUINELY CROATIA, THE GRAND OPENING OF THE 63rd DUBROVNIK SUMMER FESTIVAL Location: Palm Terrace, Hotel Excelsior Date: July 10, 2012 Starting at: 9:00 pm The Palm Terrace of the Excelsior Hotel offers magnificent views to the city. Highlight of this particular Summer Festival’s Grand opening night are the fireworks, taking place on the beachside of the hotel. This is why it has been considered as one of the best places to enjoy the fireworks to the fullest. Vocal group Libar, consisting of 10 talented young men, is one of the most promising young Croatian bands. Bravely, they are combining the traditional Dalmatian a capella singing with different music styles such as rock, pop, jazz, heavy metal, making it different from anything you have heard in Croatian music before.

BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB CUBAN MUSIC AND POETRY FROM THE LEGENDARY QUARTER OF HAVANA Location: The Beach, Hotel Croatia Date: July 12, 2012 Starting at: 9:00 pm Since the 1930s, the Buena Vista district of Havana has been a synonym for a focal point of Cuban musical tradition. There are a few traditional compositions which deal with this district and its inspiring effect on the musicians of past generations. LIVE FROM BUENA VISTA – THE HAVANA LOUNGE - gives an insight into the wide range of the traditional styles of the Son which came together again in a kind of melting pot in and around Buena Vista. Chan Chan as well as Son classics and other new compositions yet unknown in Europe are performed in a large original line up. THE HAVANA LOUNGE is a union of Top Stars of Havana’s traditional music scene, many of them are also well known in Europe already.

PREDIN/DEDIC JAZZ, UNDISGUISED (PIANO & VOCAL) – AN INTIMATE RETROSPECTIVE OF CROATIAN MUSIC LEGACY Location: The garden, Grand Villa Argentina Date: August 25, 2012 Starting at: 9:00 pm Combining Dedic’s jazz fluency and virtuosic piano playing with Predin’s intimate and touching vocal expression, makes this superb duo event a ‘must see’ summer event and one of the best “crooners” performances you may have ever encountered. Both artists, undisguised in their emotional demonstration and very intimate interpretation of some of the best pieces of Croatian and regional music, leave an open space for the audience to secretly immerse into their very authentic worlds of music art. The selection of music they perform is a very heart of Croatian most valuable music pieces…only in almost a jazz-cabaret manner. The concert will be taking place in one of many secluded gardens of the Grand Villa Argentina hotel, with candles enlightening the stage and selection of good old cognacs and martinis to make your evening overwhelming.

GIBONNI MEDITTERRANEAN SENSIBILITY, COSMOPOLITAN PASSION Location: Vala Beach Club, Hotel Dubrovnik Palace Date: September 03, 2012 Starting at: 9:00 pm The concert of Gibonni, one of the most respected song writers and performers in the region, is left to conclude this year’s summer program, as a cherry on the top. Gibonni brings together elements of rock, pop and traditional Dalmatian songs into a specific fusion, resembling a practice of best music artist. Although very humble when it comes to his music, his ambition and passion for creating music is fully conveyed in his performance. The Vala Beach Club is just a spectacular location. High rocks at one part of the stage, outdoor pool in the middle of it and open Mediterranean Sea at the back, makes this spot one of the loveliest sceneries where most of summer events take place. Find out why!

Massimo earned during his career. His deep but delicate and sensitive vocal expression together with the romantic mood, set by candlelight summer night on the beach of the Bellevue Hotel, will make a night into an amazing music night, full of passion. The beach is set under the steep rocks of the shore, making scenery more dramatic and the experience of Massimo almost theatrical.

The top stars are: Lazara Cachao who, joined many worldwide tours with the“Buena Vista Social Club”. With Yarin Oviedo participates the youngest percussion player of the “Afro Cuban All stars“ and a “wizard” of Percussions and Timbales. The singer Evelio Galan is one of the most impressive Singers from the “Afro Cuban All Stars” brimfull of this special esprit between a sparkling flame and a tender Cuban Cigar smoke. He also worked with Ibrahim Ferrer, Compay Secundo and many other Top Stars of the Cuban music scene for many years. In addition there are Amik Guerra, trumpeter from “Buena Vista Social Club”, Alberto “Molote” Munoz , trombone player from the “Afro Cuban All Stars” and the “Buena Vista Social Club.” as well as the Singer Jose Jill Pineda, from the “Afro Cuban All Stars”.. This constellation is joined by young musicians whose dedicated their musically skills to traditional music. On balance the spectator who listens to the “LIVE FROM BUENA VISTA – THE HAVANA LOUNGE” experiences the ultimate in acoustic, handmade music. The particular appeal of the music seems to be that the blend of cultures forming the Cuban identity are mirrored in Son and woven together in the most virtuoso fashion. The beach of the Hotel Croatia offers a most romantic view of the small city of Cavtat, illuminated by night, with its narrow streets, coffee shops, restaurants and numerous travellers walking by.

Famous Oscar-winning Hollywood Director

F

rancis Ford Coppola, one of today’s greatest living directors, stayed in the luxurious Villa Agave in Dubrovnik last week. The famous director flew to Dubrovnik from Paris on his private plane, and arrived at Villa Agave where he was welcomed by the director of the hotel, Jasna Đurković, and the hotel’s hostess, Marija Zečević. He brought an old wooden desk and a typewriter and said he was going to spend all five days that he was in Dubrovnik in the quietness of Villa Agave in order to write materials for his next film project. While talking with his hosts, the hotel group Adriatic Luxury Hotels, and sipping Turkish coffee, he revealed his reasons for revisiting Dubrovnik where he first stayed back in 1962, and at the same place – the Excelsior Hotel.

Cool Cuisine Hotel Bellevue’s restaurant, Vapor, is the must-taste dining experience for gourmet visitors to Dubrovnik, and its style invites diners to adopt a new approach.

“W

hat’s on the menu?” is out. “What would I like to eat?” is in. Vapor is a restaurant with character where interior design and decorative detail combine exclusivity with authentic local flair. Vapor’s repertoire of dishes represents Mediterranean cuisine at its best,

with fish and seafood creations beyond imagining. All is organic and prepared with subtlety and supreme refinement. The wine card is without doubt one of the finest ones in Dubrovnik. Executive chef Sasa Racunica describes Vapor as a restaurant that

offers gourmets the chance to enjoy Mediterranean cuisine presented in a uniquely 'playful' way. The restaurant follows the fundamental philosophy of the Hotel Bellevue: everything is adapted to the wishes of the guests. “We are less interested in showing off what we can do, than in preparing what our guests tell us they want to eat,” says the chef. “That is why we don’t insist on following the suggestions on the menu strictly to the letter, but adapt our offerings according to the preferences of our guests and the availability of fresh produce. In this way we refresh the usual restaurant routine, add a new dimension to the satisfaction of our guests, and present our team with a new creative challenge for each meal.” The focus is on finest seasonal produce prepared with an innovative and aesthetic twist, and complemented by one of the best

wine lists in Dubrovnik. Small wonder that Vapor was recently named one of the 20 finest restaurants in Croatia by a panel of food experts. “I believe that our local culinary tradition has a lot to offer to the world,” says Saša. “Luckily, all the latest expertise and technology are available to us today and we can train our team to work to the highest standards and follow the latest trends in gastronomy. We have the finest raw materials in abundance, and I am convinced that if we prepare and present Croatian cuisine in a modern way, it can compete with the best and delight the most discerning palate.’ Sasa Racunica’s philosophy would seem perfectly attuned to a restaurant that has quickly gained an iconic reputation as one of the finest in Croatia - a must-taste experience for every gourmet visiting Dubrovnik.

he Frenchman worked at Harrods for three years, spent an equal amount of time as head of kitchen in the luxury hotel chain and then joined Grand Villa Argentina in Dubrovnik, where he has been the chef for almost a year. Thierry was educated in Paris, and then he worked all over the world – New York, Thailand, India, Switzerland. What brought him to Dubrovnik? “I remember that one day I was sitting at my computer,” says Thierry Caruel, “and I saw a tempting offer from the Grand Villa Argentina. I had my CV ready in my computer and I was contemplating whether to press the button and send it or not. In the end I did, and I have not regretted it. Fine dinning restaurant Victoria in Grand Villa Argentina is my baby and a great challenge to me. We do lots of weddings, banquettes and parties, and we prepare meals you can find in large cities but are also characteristic of this region and prepared in a modern way. I am delighted to be surrounded by such wonderful young people who are willing to learn, and therefore the atmosphere in the kitchen is relaxed, which is not the case in New York restaurants where a competitive spirit prevails.” The high point of his successful career so far has surely been his engagement at the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. “Preparations for the wedding took two months and everything was

top secret. Only my wife knew I had been hired for the royal wedding. The menu was international, and I was in charge of the French cuisine. All the ingredients had to be bought exclusively in France and were delivered to us in sealed packages which were opened in the presence of the Queen’s security staff, who then tasted all the ingredients. Despite all that, I did not feel I was under pressure, I felt good, and the atmosphere in Buckingham Palace was relaxed. That was a wonderful experience. I met wonderful people and realized why they were proud to have an opportunity to work for the Queen,” says Thierry. Thierry regularly cooks for his wife and children, who are his most honest critics. At home, he tries new dishes, and specialities from different world cuisines find their place in the menu. The family around the table is always a small celebration for them. “At the moment, my greatest challenge is to create a new speciality which will make Victoria recognized,” reveals this likable and energetic chef. He finds life in Dubrovnik quite similar to the one in London because of the many people from all over the world whom he meets every day in the course of his work. Only the climate is much nicer and life is less hasty and stressful. And these are the best ingredients for a high quality of life, a recipe we should all stick to.

In the morning, white pigeons are released in front of the saint’s church, and prayers are said in front of the altar by the faithful the entire day. Sunset on the Island of Mljet

MLJET

THE ISLAND OF ULYSSES

Have you heard about Ulysses, great mythical Greek hero and king of Ithaca? According to one of the many legends, Ulysses was shipwrecked on the island of Mljet and lured by the nymph Calypso in cave where he became her hostage... Today, the island of Mljet is forested paradise and national park with miraculous sea lakes. Famous for its stories and legends, Island of Mljet is the largest island of the Dubrovnik Archipelago. It is often called a 'green island' because of its lush vegetation. Its beauty consists of the most beautiful beaches that make an amazing contrast with steep rocks, caves and cliffs. The western part of the island was proclaimed the first national park at the Adriatic in 1960. Because of its natural features and cultural-historic monuments the park represents the area of special purpose and protection of original eco-system at the Adriatic coast. Walking across Mljet you will feel this protection in cliffs, rocks, indented shores, scattered little islands and a unique geological system of salty lakes. These lakes were freshwater lakes from 10 000 years ago until the beginning of Christian era. To experience their beauty people swim and sale across them in gondolas. This way, you can really see the inner beauty of the island. Seeing all this makes you feel like walking across the heaven on earth. The natural secrets of both lakes have attracted many scientists over the years, as well as innumerable nature lovers seeking unspoiled nature. In the middle of the Great Lake a small isle, St. Mary, found its place with an ancient Benedictine monastery and a small church dating to the 12th century. The small island bestows an exceptional aesthetic image to whole of Mljet and is a tourist favorite resort. Beautiful rich forest surrounds the lakes and fills the park, featuring small wood roads and discrete pathways, ideal for hiking and bicycle rides. The woods gently descend all the way to the surface of the crystal clear lakes giving hikers, bikers and swimmers a refreshing shade, enhancing the tranquil feeling which Mljet radiates.

A GLIMPSE OF HISTORY The pages of the island's history contain a story of one great personality, Ulysses. After a shipwreck, Ulysses found the shelter in a cave. He swam into the cave that saved his life. He lived on the island for seven years. The cave is called Ulysses' Cave and, if you ask, any resident will show you how to get to the village Babino Polje where the cave is. Interesting thing to see are the remains of Christian history on little island Melita in the heart of Mljet where Benedictine monastery of Saint Mary found its place since 12th century. When there, you can easily imagine the life few hundreds of years ago. There are regular boat lines to visit this tiny island.

ACCOMMODATION When searching for a place to stay, you will come across a well known hotel Odisej. The unique property with a beach in front, children's pool, beach bar, diving center, pizzeria and tavern with terrace. It is located in a nice Pomena Bay. The Bay is full of yachts and boats that come there to hide from the wind and enjoy the scenery.

Ulysses' Cave

ULYSSES' CAVE (JAMA) An amazing spot located a short walk from Babino Polje. It is a marine cave that owes its denomination to an ancient legend according to which the adventurous Ulysses spent seven years on Mljet, enchanted by the beautiful nymph Calypso that lived right in this cave. Take a pleasant walk through the fields and try to see if you can resist its charm! It is also a very popular spot for high jumps, thanks to the rocky and slightly cliffy shoreline that surrounds the cave. While swimming, you will see the amazing water colors on your way in and out, what will surely make this an unforgettable experience! ANCIENT VILLAGES Most villages on Mljet were founded between the 15th and the 18th century. The houses were generally made of stones and have thus contributed to create a renowned typical Dalmatian-Mediterranean inspiring "atmosphere" of ancient times, which still lives through many of the island's old settlements nowadays. Although abandoned in its majority, these houses and its close surroundings still witness about

the traditional and hard-working daily lives of our ancestors. If you wish to take a break from your summer activities, get inspired by these storytelling walls that will take you back in time! Take a walk around Prožura, Korita, Maranovići (with some stunning views!) or the ancient part of Babino Polje (ask for Šehovići or Sršenovići). Tip: make sure you don't miss the Ethno Museum Biskup while strolling through Babino Polje

Uvala Sutmiholjska or Vala is a pebble beach located at around 4km from Babino Polje. Overall, Mljet's shore is generally rocky but that doesn't mean you can't have a decent swim. On the contrary, it will give you the opportunity to visit some real cool places that you might have missed otherwise. Tips: the only beach that has a bar and a supplies shop near is Saplunara. If you are going to Blaca or Vala, make sure you have your drinks and bites with you!

HILLTOPS

CAVES

It's no secret that a hilltop usually provides you with a very fine view of the surroundings. Add a stunning island to the mix and you will get nothing less than a breathtaking sight for your eyes! Although Mljet has a great variety of paths that lead you to as many hilltops as you can imagine, we recommend you the top three: Veliki Grad, Montokuc and Planjak.

If you like terrestrial or marine caves, Mljet is a very good place for you since there is a variety of both all along the island. The Odysseus' cave is the best known among the marine ones, but there are many others available for exploration of curious divers. Some examples are caves Rikavica, Biskup or Zavrti. The two main terrestrial caves are Ostaševica and Movrica, located close to Babino Polje. Both are very special and unique in its own way so if you are up for some adventure you can visit them on your own or with a guide that can take you to the entrance (it's a 30-45 min walk from Babino Polje).

THE LAKES AND THE NATIONAL PARK Undoubtedly the most famous part of the island! Its stunning forests and the beautiful nature phenomenon of the salty lakes have earned it the National Park title back in 1960. It's cultural heritage, although less known, is as important. The Romans have left us a worthy legacy of the ancient Palace in Polače, along with some other archeological sites. After the Diocletian's Palace in Split, this is the most important monument of that kind on the coast! But it wasn't only the Romans who left their traces on Mljet - if you are a history lover, you will certainly find many interesting sites and stories during your stay.

BEACHES Although Mljet offers numerous swimming spots and you can swim anywhere you want, including the Lakes there are actually only three beaches on the island. And surprisingly, the prettiest and the biggest of the three doesn't even get crowded! That is because it's a bit further and more complicated to reach than the other two. The name of this sandy beach is Uvala Blaca (or Limuni) and it's located at the far end of the island from the NP. The second sandy beach is called Saplunara, and is located quite close to Blaca but easily reachable by car and the first one you'll see, so most visitors ignore the existence of Blaca and just stay here.

GETTING THERE FROM DUBROVNIK There are two ways to get to Mljet and both are by sea. There are direct boat lines from Gruž harbor to main ports of Mljet. Fast catamaran “Nona Ana” takes you comfortably and quickly there in just 45 minutes or so. A trip starts out of Dubrovnik's Port Gruz. There is also another ferry line to Mljet from Trstenik. The slow ferry ship is a wonderful sightseeing experience, giving you a glimpse of all islands from Dubrovnik to Mljet as you pass along them, even a insight view as the ferry harbors to many islands of the Elaphite archipelago as a part of its line. The trip is an opportunity to make many unforgettable pictures and see what Dubrovnik Riviera is all about. There is also the tird option, via ferry line in Prapratno. Time tables of all options above are available at the Guest Relation desk.

Whatever way you choose to go you won't regret it, as The Green Island has something for everyone, beautiful walk paths and bicycle tracks, hundreds of unrevealed bathing spots, and many beaches including Saplunara beach and many more attractions.
