welcome to my work
By way of introduction, my name is Adrienne Kerr of Black Widow Silks and I am a graphic and textile designer based in Scotland. I have two sons who are now at University and I have two border collies who still live at home with myself and my husband John. When my eldest son applied to go to University I decided to go back and do the same and was accepted by Heriot Watt University to study a Masters in Fashion and Textiles at Galashiels in the beautiful Scottish border countryside. This personal development has allowed my graphics background to develop and has engaged me with all things tactile & textile. It has brought flexibility to my ability of working on design concepts, briefs and commissions for printed and textured surfaces and my love of repeat patterns in textiles has gently bubbled to the surface I do hope you enjoy my first surface pattern collection look book and if you feel that my work would fit with a ny commisions or projects then please do not hestitate to get in touch with me.

The “Thai House collection was inspired by our first house in Edinburgh which had an orchid room and was decorated with a view to it being a consulate of Thailand. The rich vibrant colour palette is influenced by the timeless and ever enduring work of the late Scandanavian architect and textile designer Josef Frank.

The “two by two” collection is inspired by my two teenage sons and the nostalgic memories of them playing in their nursery with their favourite toy Noah’s Arc. On a rainy day they would line up their toy animals and march them in and out the arc creating their own adventure stories.

product applications
The colour palette of the “two by two surface pattern collection was initially inspired by the muted primary colours and enamel paints which were used on vintage toys from a bygone vintage era and those which I researched in the museum of childhood in Edinburgh, which was a real treasure trove for inspiration for this collection. It is a traditional but joyous colour scheme and its applications is also diverse.

It was during the period of when I was studying for my MA in Fashion & Textiles in Galashiels and the Waverley trainline between Edinburgh and the borders was being built that my inspiration for this collection comes from. The wild foliage growing at the edge of the roadside and railway line always focused my attention of the wild natural beauty growing around this route.

lets talk! If you are interested in the designs in this collection or indeed the style of my work please get in touch as I would be delighted to hear from you. I am interested in licensing designs or undertaking bespoke design projects. Over the years, I have worked on many briefs as a graphic designer and I have no problem in adjusting my approach to suit a particular project in hand. I am commercially savy, adaptable, dependable and extremely keen! I have quite a bold graphic style and I like to research my briefs before I start to draw or go near my computer. I like to research museum and gallery archives and I take my own photographs to work from, as I feel it makes my work a more personal experience . Although using illustrator and photoshop, my tendancy is to keep a hand drawn element or texture within my designs and I enjoy working with a variety of scales within my patterns and textile pieces. My designs are suitable for application onto wallpaper, upholstery, fashion, clothing, accessories, packaging, gift wrap and greetings cards and I would be so happy to see my fabric collections being used fora variety of craft projects and quilting. I also like to experiment away from the computer with my textile work in different mediums like laser cutting, free-hand machine embroidery and hand stitch.
