An unique surrounding Unique nature, unparalleled geology The Magic Mountains territory contains 4 spaces classified under the 2000 Natura Network and a classified space by European and Global Geoparks Networks under the UNESCO principles. In November 2013, was awarded by the EUROPARC federation with the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas.

AROUCA GEOPARK A geopark is a well defined territory that possesses a remarkable geological patrimony, along with a strategy of sustainable growth, which covers a determined number of places of geological importance (“geoplaces”) with special scientific, pedagogic and touristic relevance, to which are associated historic and cultural values. Created in 2007 the Arouca Geopark, which corresponds to the administrative area of Arouca’s municipal (32.910 ha), integrates the European and Global Networks of Geoparks under the auspices of UNESCO, having its geological values recognized to the highest level.

PLACES OF COMMUNITY INTEREST OF NATURE NETWORK 2000 The Natura Network 2000 is an ecological network applicable to the European Union Community space, that has the goal of “contribute to insurance the biodiversity through the conservation of natural habitats and the wild fauna and flora in the European territory of state-members in which the Treated is applicable”. It constitutes, therefore, the main instrument to the nature preservation in the European Union. In the Magic Mountains there are 4 Places of Community Interest of the Natura Network 2000: > Freita and Arada mountains; > Montemuro mountain; > River Paiva; > River Vouga. These four places classified in the Natura Network 2000 and the Geopark of UNESCO occupy, as a all, approximately, 50% of the Magic Mountains territory (83.629 hectares of non overlapping area), attesting the importance and quality of its natural and geological patrimony.

BESTANÇA’S RIVER AND VALLEY The Bestança’s river is born at 1.229 meters of altitude in the Montemuro Mountain and its clear water made it one of the most clean rivers of Europe. Given the elevated level of natural conservation of all the river’s path and as a sustainable ecosystem of indisputable importance, river Bestança was integrated in the Natura Network 2000 and classified as Biotope CORINE, assuming a national and international ecological importance of exponential value.

Uma envolvente única Natureza Singular, Geologia ímpar O território das Montanhas Mágicas® engloba 4 espaços classificados no âmbito da Rede Natura 2000 e um espaço classificado no âmbito das redes europeia e global de geoparques sob os auspícios da UNESCO. Em novembro de 2013 recebeu da Federação Europarc o galardão da Carta Europeia de Turismo Sustentável em Áreas Protegidas.

AROUCA GEOPARK Um Geoparque é um território de limites bem definidos que possui um notável património geológico, aliado a uma estratégia de desenvolvimento sustentável, que abrange um determinado número de sítios de importância geológica (geossítios) com especial relevância científica, pedagógica e turística, aos quais se associam os valores históricos e culturais. Criado em 2007 o Arouca Geopark, que corresponde à área administrativa do município de Arouca ((32.910 ha), integra as Redes Europeia e Global de Geoparks sob os auspícios da UNESCO, vendo os seus valores geológicos reconhecidos ao mais alto nível.

SÍTIOS DE INTERESSE COMUNITÁRIO DA REDE NATURA 2000 A Rede Natura 2000 é uma rede ecológica aplicável ao espaço Comunitário da União Europeia que tem por objetivo “contribuir para assegurar a biodiversidade através da conservação dos habitats naturais e da fauna e da flora selvagens no território europeu dos Estados-membros em que o Tratado é aplicável”. Constitui assim o principal instrumento para a conservação da natureza na União Europeia. Nas Montanhas Mágicas® existem 4 Sítios de Interesse Comunitário da Rede Natura 2000: > Serras da Freita e Arada; > Serra de Montemuro; > Rio Paiva; > Rio Vouga. Estes quatro sítios classificados da Rede Natura 2000 e o Geoparque da UNESCO ocupam, no seu conjunto, aproximadamente 50% do território (83.629 hectares de área não sobreposta), atestando a importância e a qualidade do seu património natural e geológico.

RIO E VALE DO BESTANÇA O rio Bestança nasce a 1.229 metros de altitude na Serra de Montemuro e as suas águas límpidas tornam-no um dos rios mais limpos da Europa. Dado o elevado grau de conservação natural de todo o curso fluvial e como ecossistema sustentável de indiscutível importância, o rio Bestança foi integrado na Rede Natura 2000 e classificado como Biótopo CORINE, assumindo uma importância ecológica nacional e internacional de exponencial valor.

Wild waters

Challenge the wild waters. Thrill yourself. Magic Mountains® constitute a referential spot for people to meet, specially, water sports’ lovers. Rapids, whirlwind and generous water flow give, usually, between November and April, the ideal conditions to the practice of this territory’s “kings’ sport”: rafting. Besides this, many other water adventure sports are practiced: kayaking, canoa-raft, river tubing, canyoning, hidro-speed and canoeing (in wild and calm water). The security measures, the quality of the material and the realization of important sport events transformed the “Magic Mountains” territory into a reference when talking about radical and adventure destinations.

RAFTING IN RIVER PAIVA Considered by specialists the best Portuguese river for rafting practice, being an international reference, Paiva attracts annually to its territory, hundreds of practitioners of this type of sport. There are 17 wild water courses chosen by touristic animation companies, local and national, in a total of 121,5 km with different levels of difficulty (I to VI in a world scale). Along the river Paiva are located the most sensational ones.

CANYONING There are more than 10 canyoning courses in the Magic Mountains, which are made mainly in affluent rivers of Paiva and Vouga: river Teixeira, river Caima, river Lordelo, river Pombeiro, river of Frades, among others. Overcoming the most diverse natural obstacles and following different levels of difficulty, canyoning gathers a growing number of practitioners that enjoy the purity of the water, the beauty of the landscape and the pleasure of defying not also themselves but nature itself.

Desafie-as e satisfaça a “sede” de aventura As Montanhas Mágicas® constituem um ponto de encontro preferencial para os amantes dos desportos aquáticos. Rápidos, remoinhos e caudais generosos proporcionam, habitualmente, entre novembro e abril, as condições ideais para a prática do “desporto rei” deste território: o rafting. Além deste, diversos outros desportos aquáticos de aventura são aqui praticados: kayaking, canoa-raft, river tubing, canyoning, hidro-speed e canoagem (de águas bravas e calmas). As condições naturais associadas à experiência acumulada, às medidas de segurança, à qualidade do material utilizado e à realização de importantes eventos desportivos tornaram o território das Montanhas Mágicas® uma referência no contexto dos destinos radicais e de aventura.

RAFTING NO RIO PAIVA Considerado pelos especialistas o melhor rio português para a prática de rafting, sendo alvo de referência a nível internacional, o Paiva atrai anualmente ao território, centenas de praticantes desta modalidade desportiva. Ao todo são 17 os percursos de águas bravas adotados pelas empresas de animação turística, locais e nacionais num total de 121,5 km, com diferentes níveis de dificuldade (classificação de I a VI a nível mundial) sendo ao longo do rio Paiva que se localizam os percursos mais sensacionais.

CANYONING São mais de 10 os percursos de canyoning das Montanhas Mágicas®, realizando-se maioritariamente em rios de montanha afluentes do Paiva e do Vouga: rio Teixeira, rio Caima; rio Lordelo, rio Pombeiro, rio de Frades, entre vários outros. Vencendo os mais diversos obstáculos naturais e obedecendo a diferentes níveis de dificuldade, o canyoning reúne um número crescente de praticantes que desfrutam da pureza das águas, da beleza das paisagens e do prazer de se desafiarem a si próprios e à natureza.

Hot springs - Health and well-being Take care of yourself in the pure waters of the mountain ... HOT SPRINGS OF SÃO PEDRO DO SUL “The Hot Springs of São Pedro do Sul where the first king and the last Queen of Portugal were cured”, are now “the most important destiny of health and well-being in Portugal.”

In the area of the well-being, the SPA of Carvalhal offer programs consisting of treatments that appeal to relaxation, and the perfect harmony between body and mind.

History is one of the reasons for deciding to go to the Hot Springs’ baths in S. Pedro do Sul. But the main reason is the quality of its waters; emergence temperature of 68.7 º C, pH 8, 89 at 18 º C Sulphurous sodium. These waters are especially indicated in the treatment of respiratory infections, nervous system, ortho-traumatology and rheumatology.

REAL SPA  ROYAL SPA The Royal Spa is the paradise of the senses, a place of relaxation and well-being, located in Balneário Rainha D. Amelia. Here your senses will be awakened. There is a diverse set of rituals, massages and treatments.

CARVALHAL HOT SPRINGS “The beauty of the mountain hand in hand with the health and well-being” They are located about 500 meters high, between the water basins of Vouga and Paiva Rivers. Framed by the mountains of Arada and Montemuro, Termas do Carvalhal combine the SPA tourism, the rural world, the country, the nature, the ancient traditions and the castrense gastronomy (from Castro Daire). The water of the Hot Springs of Carvalhal is classified as sulphurous, bicarbonate, sodium and fluoride and it is distinguished by its high ph = 9.3. It is especially indicated for the treatment of rheumatic and musculoskeletal, digestive, dermatological and respiratory infections.

Termas - Saúde e Bem-estar Cuide de si nas águas puras da montanha… TERMAS DE S. PEDRO DO SUL “São Pedro do Sul as termas onde se curou o primeiro Rei e a última Rainha de Portugal” são, atualmente “o maior destino de saúde e bem-estar em Portugal”. A História é uma das razões para se decidir ir a banhos às Termas de S. Pedro do Sul. Mas a principal é a qualidade das suas águas: temperatura de emergência de 68,7ºC, pH8,89 a 18ºC Sulfúrea sódica. Estas águas são especialmente indicadas no tratamento de afeções das vias respiratórias, do sistema nervoso, do foro orto-traumatológico e reumatologia.

Geology - Arouca Geopark

Unravel a story with more than 500 million years The geological formations identified in the area of Arouca Geopark unravel a story that Earth has carefully preserved over many millions of years, assuming as a legacy for humanity. Geotourism, with special focus on scientific and geological tourism, geoconservation and environmental education are the essential pillars of the Arouca Geopark, a territory that encourages tourists to live rewarding experiences; the tourist becomes an active protagonist not just a mere observer of the landscape. There are 41 sites of geological interest but the “Stones that Give Birth”, the “Giant Trilobites”, “Frecha Mizarela” and the “ichnofossils of Paiva” deserve special attention. Serra da Freita (Mountain), Paiva river, traditional villages and the Monastery of Arouca complement the list of the main attractions of the area.

Desvendar uma história com mais de 500 milhões de anos As formações geológicas identificadas na área do Arouca Geopark desvendam uma história que a Terra soube guardar ao longo de muitos milhões de anos, assumindo-se como uma herança para a humanidade. O geoturismo, com especial enfoque no turismo geológico e científico, a geoconservação e a educação ambiental são, assim, as traves mestras do Arouca Geopark, um território que estimula o turista a viver experiências gratificantes, que o transforma num protagonista ativo e não apenas num mero observador da paisagem. Dos 41 sítios de interesse geológico merecem especial destaque as “Pedras Parideiras”, as “Trilobites Gigantes” a “Frecha da Mizarela” e os “Icnofósseis do Paiva”. A serra da Freita, o rio Paiva, as aldeias tradicionais e o Mosteiro de Arouca complementam a lista das principais atrações do território.

MUSEU DAS TRILOBITES E CENTRO DE INTERPRETAÇÃO GEOLÓGICA DE CANELAS Tem exposta uma singular coleção de fósseis recolhidos nas ardósias aflorantes da sua envolvente e formadas há cerca de 465 milhões de anos. Do acervo paleontológico destacam-se as trilobites.

WALKING TRAILS The Magic Mountains offer you 41 walking routes totaling 468 km, one of them is a Great Route (90km), another is a Biodiversity Station (2.5 miles) and the remaining are of Short Route. Scroll highlands, woods, forests, roads, footpaths, bridges, water-courses, villages and tilled plains, and delight yourself with the authenticity of every detail. Observe and interpret the flora and fauna and surprise yourself with the beauty and perfection of nature.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES Mountain biking, rappel, rock climbing, orienteering ... Take advantage of the excellent natural conditions of the mountains Freita, Arada, S. MacĂĄrio, Arestal, Gralheira and Montemuro to practice all kind of outdoor activities, individually or in groups. THE BIOPARK Besides the bioactivities of adventure, relaxation and exploration of nature, and of the General Programmes dedicated to children, families, adventure and culture - Pure adventure, Bio adventure, Bio Child, Family and Culture ... it also offers several types of accommodation - bungalows, mountain home and camping area, guided visits to the water mills, among other activities.

QUINTA DO ENGENHO It is an eco-park set in a pleasant countryside, with 4.5 hectares, where Mau river, a tributary of Vouga river, forms several refreshing waterfalls. Scenery of undeniable natural beauty where numerous water mills testify the memory of the past, this farm offers adventure activities as well as wellness, romantic and gastronomic programs, complemented with the local tourist offer.
