Financial courses to help meet your personal goals by Sarah Reed Editor

Tax season is gearing up, but it doesn’t mean you should think about your finances once a year. For many people, acquiring personal finance skills isn’t something picked up in school. Instead, it’s a learned process from parents or another outside source. If you are someone who has questions about personal finances ― whether you want to better track your spending, build a savings or understand credit reports ― resources are available through Saline County’s University of Missouri Extension Office. MU Extension’s Family Financial Education courses offer a variety of topics for those hoping to achieve certain financial goals. Family Financial Education Specialist Trish Sav-

age, who leads the courses, said she’s seen one over-arching theme of people’s needs: learning the basics. “I have found … just the basics of setting financial goals and creating two financial statements (are desired),” Savage said, saying they create a net worth statement and a cash flow statement. “Then they can get a summary of their current financial situation and then create a spending plan ― and tracking expenses. Just that basic budgeting.” Savage noted once people begin to pay attention to their personal expenses, they see a difference in their habits. “One client I had counseled in Columbia, on campus ― an educated person working right on campus ― thought that they were in control of their money. But yet she kept running out of money every month, wondering where it was, and they had

no retirement,” she said. “But then when she started actually paying attention to her checkbook and a budget, she wrote me a letter and said it’s just made a world of difference.” Some courses that focus on basic budgeting include Money Habitudes I and II, Making Money Count and Take Control of Your Finances. Take Control of Your Finances is a two-hour workshop that focuses on helping reduce stress for those who are unemployed, laid-off, underemployed or struggle to make ends meet. The course is free to those registered with jobs.mo.gov. It’s offered ever second Tuesday at Sedalia Career Center, and every fourth Tuesday in Marshall, which acts as a satellite office. “I think it’s so important to learn about predatory lending and credit reports that I have expanded that a little bit ...” Sav-

age said. “It’s just something that everyone needs some information on because, I think, many people go to the predatory lenders and I think they can be more efficient with there money. And there are alternatives.” Other courses hone in on more focused financial topics, such as When Creditors are Predators, Women and Finance, Health Insurance Education Initiative and Home Ownership Made Easier ― a two- to four-hour workshop designed to walk the participant through the steps of buying a home. Learning about a reverse mortgage is also an option for community members. “It’s a really complex product,” she said. “It’s appropriate, maybe, in some instances. They really are expensive. There are a lot of costs and fees incurred. So if people know what they’re

getting into, they can make that decision.” Savage looks to give workshops to groups and partner with community groups in order to reach a wider audience. Although individual counseling might be available. She’s headquartered in Saline County, but reaches into four other counties with financial expertise. Many courses can take place at the Extension office, located at 353 S. Lafayette Ave. Others are scheduled in the community, including a health insurance course she led this past December at Marshall Public Library. For more information on financial courses and how to register, call the Extension at 660-886-6908 or email Savage at savaget@missouri.edu. Agencies and groups interested in partnering are encouraged to call.
