Great jazz returns to Marshall – again In keeping with its young traditions, the 2014 Bob James Jazz Festival will bring to mid-Missouri something new, something familiar, Marshall musical connections and an opportunity for area musicians to learn about jazz -- all in honor of and with the help of jazz piano legend Bob James. The fourth annual jazz festival has grown to cover three days, starting with a showing of "Hearts Together," at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at Marshall Cinema on corner of Odell Avenue and North Street in Marshall. Freewill donations accepted. The film is a documentary about the creation of a song by Bob James dedicated to the victims of Japan's 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The live music begins Friday evening with a concert at Missouri Valley College's Eckilson-Mabee Theatre, 500 E. College St., Marshall, that will begin with the return of Sedville Jazz Company, a patron favorite from the 2012 jazz festival. The area group features a cornerstone

of the Marshall music scene, Charles Ferguson, on bass. The band plays lively renditions of jazz standards. Sedville will be followed by Metropolitan Jazz Workshop ensembles, directed by Clarence Smith. "This is a chance to see some of the best young Kansas City jazz students in action," said Eric Crump, a member of the festival planning committee. "Those of you who have seen Missouri Valley College jazz band perform know that young musicians bring great energy and joy to their music. And Clarence is does a great job bringing out the best in young musicians." Doors open at 6:30 p.m. ($20 per seat). Saturday will be a day full of music and learning, starting with a master class conducted by Marshall native Bob James. James performs on the stage of the Harold L. Lickey Auditorium at the 2013 Bob James Jazz Festival. James not only has performed on that stage during occasional hometown concerts over the years, but he performed there as a music student of Harold Lickey's when the building was Marshall High School. both for more than 50 years. The class will start at 9 a.m. in EckilsonMabee Theatre. Following the master class is a clinic for area musicians who want to learn about or learn more about playing jazz. The clinic begins at 10 a.m. in Morrison Fine Arts Center on the Missouri Valley College campus. Registration in advance is required. "Marshall has a fine tradition of nurturing musical aspirations," Crump said. "Bob James is only our most famous example. His parents, and his first teacher, Sister Mary Elizabeth, of Mercy Academy, probably had no idea where music might take him or what he might accomplish, but they saw desire and talent and helped it flourish. The jazz festival in his honor is our attempt to continue that tradition." Every year, musicians who got their start in Marshall take the stage and demonstrate the result of the community's commitment to music education. Past performers include Clarence Smith, Joe Athon, Mike Henderson, D.J. Sweeney and Kevin Frazee. This year, Gary Coble will bring his popular blues/funk band, Salty Dawg's Cold Sweat to Marshall. The Saturday concert at Bueker Middle School's Harold L. Lickey Memorial Auditorium, 565 S. Odell Ave., will begin with a performance by the Clinic AllStars, those participants in the clinic who wish to show what they've learned during the day. After Salty Dawg's set, the great Latin jazz band from K.C., Sons of Brasil, led by Stan Kessler, will perform. They will be joined by special guest Bob James to perform a few of his classic numbers. This will be James' third appearance at the festival. "One of the most consistent comments we get from festival patrons is 'More Bob James!'" Crump said. "It's a real treat to experience his wonderful music without having to travel to New York or Japan. We're very grateful for his participation in the festival." Doors open at 5:30 p.m. ($25 per seat).
