Santa Fe Trail Days Santa Fe Trail Days gets boost with simultaneous events The annual Santa Fe Trail Days event is held the second weekend in September this year and will be held in conjunction with the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Marshall.

According to Marshall Chamber of Commerce website, “The town comes alive with vendors, music, children activities, races and so much more. Booths include demonstrators, crafters, food and drink vendors, heritage crafters and more.”

Santa Fe Trail Days will kick off the weekend festivities with the Chuck Wagon Dinner on the courthouse lawn featuring Master Illusionist Harriss III and the Bamvoozled. Its said to be an evening of truth in the world of deception. Special guests will include Variety Circus Performer Don B. and Bubba, one of the world’s strongest men. Event will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13. Rain location will be St. Peter School’s gymnasium, located at 368 S. Ellsworth Ave. This event is sponsored by SOUL Team.

On Saturday, Sept. 14, the Lions Club is sponsoring a 5K and 10K Run for the Blind at Indian Foothills Park from 6:45 to 8:45 a.m.

At 9 a.m., Marshall Municipal Band will hold a special performance on the courthouse lawn. A parade around the square will begin at 10 a.m. The route starts on Brunswick Ave. and East North Street. The parade will be followed by a Civil War reenactment of the

1863 confrontation at the courthouse.

The Santa Fe Trail Days craft festival and children’s activities area will take place at Indian Foothills Park from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There will be fun for everyone.

From 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Civil War Camps will be open to the general public throughout the park.

Marvin Wilhite, local historian, will be giving a lecture proving context for the battle at 1 p.m. at the Battle Shelter on the park.

The first Civil War Battle re-enactment at the park will take place on the north side of Indian Foothills Park at 2 p.m.

Cathy Barton and Dave Para, folk-singing duo, will perform at the 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Hilltop Shelter House on the park. Barton and Para have created dynamic performances for 35 years and are known for their dedication to traditional music, especially from their home region of Missouri and the Ozarks. Of the 15 albums they have produced since 1978, four have been named Notable Recordings by the American Library Association for their important historical and cultural contexts. Their concerts present a range of music from the driving dance tunes they have collected to old ballads to new songs and feature several stringed instruments. In 2011, they received the Missouri Humanities Award for Exemplary Community Achievement. They have directed the Big Muddy Folk Festival in Boonville, where

Denny is a former historian for the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, and the author of several books and articles. He has given numerous presentations on Missouri’s history. His latest publication is “The Civil War’s First Blood: Missouri 1854 1861” published by Missouri Life.

A country dance, with music provided by Barton and Para, will take place at the Hilltop Shelter House beginning at 7 p.m.

Grilled Ham and Cheese with Mango Makes 1 sandwich 2 Tbsp. softened butter 2 slices whole wheat bread 2 slices Monterey Jack cheese 4 slices deli ham 1 mango (about 1 pound), peeled, pitted and sliced Spread 1 tablespoon butter on one side of each piece of bread. On first slice of bread, place 1 slice cheese, ham and mango on unbuttered side of bread. Top with remaining slice of cheese and second piece of bread, buttered side up. Heat small, nonstick skillet over medium-low heat. Place sandwich in skillet and cook until golden brown and cheese is melted, 3 to 4 minutes per side.

The longer a person has diabetes, the higher their risk for eye disease. Over time, diabetes may cause damage to the blood vessels in the back of the eye, known as

diabetic retinopathy, which can lead to diabetic macular edema (DME). DME occurs when the damaged blood vessels leak fluid and cause swelling. Although symptoms are not always present, this swelling can cause blurred vision, double vision and patches in vision, which may appear as small black dots or lines “floating” across the front of the eye.

Approximately 26 million Americans have diabetes and may be at risk for DME. 6 More than 560,000 Americans have DME. 7 Yet approximately 55 percent are unaware that they have the disease.7 African Americans and Hispanics over the age of 40 are also at a higher risk for DME.8 Prevent Vision Loss Getting an annual retina eye exam is the best way to help detect changes in vision.
