Center for Human Services Director’s greeting: Creating opportunities, changing lives Milton Berle was once quoted as saying, “If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.” The staff and board of the Center for Human Services have assisted people with disabilities to build doors of opportunity for 58 years. We now serve 3,000 people with disabilities in 33 counties.

A child with a disability learns to eat by himself, and his mother is able to continue her education through supports from the Missouri First Steps program and the Early Head Start Program. A woman with disabilities living in an apartment in the community has many friends and shares her favorite recipe with them. A man with a disability gets a job. A young woman with disabilities is able to follow her dream of becoming an artist. A man with disabilities earns his four-year degree and shares his knowledge by working as a tutor. These are all examples of doors of opportunity that were opened this year through services and supports offered by the Center for Human Services.

Were people’s lives changed because they had opportunities? All you have to do is ask them. As you read through this special edition, you will see some of the exciting opportunities experienced by individuals living and working in this community. More opportunities are on the horizon. Thank you for being a continuing part of opening doors of opportunity for people with disabilities living in Saline County.

Saline County Activity Center – 10 years strong

The Saline County Activity Center (SCAC) celebrated 10 years of service in March this year. SCAC was designed by the Center for Human Services to accommodate individuals with disabilities when they do not have a goal to work or because they have retired. SCAC is an alternative to working. It is here to promote learning to do things the program participants enjoy; such as playing games, reading, gardening, exercise, going on outings, learning about nutrition and cooking, creative writing and crafts.

Activities have varied through the years, changing in large part to accommodate the wishes and interests of the variety of individuals SCAC have served.

One consistent activity has been community outings.

Outings can be local or in nearby communities. The program participants shop for supplies at local retailers, learning budgeting by comparison shopping.

There are certain businesses that participants request to visit regularly. They proudly share purchases with others upon their return. Some of the more recent activities include participating in the weekly exercise program in Slater, annually attending the Slater Fall Festival, and volunteering at a local retirement facility.

Activities that promote creativity have also found a consistent place at SCAC. Crafts, both for sale and to take home, are obvious creative outlets. Consumers have also written and finished stories,

planted gardens, held cooking classes and made paper quilted wall hangings. Talent shows, dancing and sing alongs are other avenues of creativity.

Volunteers have assisted SCAC participants to broaden their scope of hobby and leisure activities.

Participants have learned about exercise, veterans, arranging flowers, historical events and even motorcycles. Musical guests have entertained. Others have shared their prowess in the kitchen baking breads and making pumpkin treats.

SCAC is 10 years old, but we’ve just begun. While much has been accomplished in the past, there is still more to learn and do. We are looking forward to celebrating many more milestones in the coming years.

Brittani achieves personal and professional successes Brittani Michaels exemplifies the possibilities which exist within the Department of Employment Services at Center for Human Services. She is a charismatic young lady that exudes potential. Brittani first came to employment services due to some difficulties she had previously had within the local community attempting to maintain employment without any sort of training and/or supports. Brittani, although a bit discouraged, had the strong desire to work and be a part of her community.

Brittani began working in the organizational employment program at CWI and quickly utilized the self-advocacy techniques which are an inherent part of the employment services department. She approached staff stating her desire to obtain successful community employment.

At this same time, the Marshall Job Preparation program was conducting an apprenticeship at a local day habilitation program. Brittani conveyed her interest to attend the program and to

see if it would be something that she might like. Brittani easily won over the staff at the community program and began expressing more interests in community employment opportunities.

Throughout this time, Brittani worked with her service coordinator to obtain a referral to the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation to assist Michaels in her pursuit of community employment. Brittani was selected and chose the Center for Human Services Employment Solutions program to assist her in obtaining a job in the local community.

Staff assisted Brittani in matching her skills and interests with local jobs.

Michaels interviewed and was selected to work at Missouri Valley College.

Michaels enjoys the independence that accompanies her newfound employment. Michaels received job coaching for a while after her placement and now works independently at the college. We are proud of Michaels and congratulate her on her personal and professional successes.

Delia worked hard to live independently Delia Hufford lives independently in her own apartment in Marshall. During the past year, she started working with Barb Kelliker, community support coordinator. Delia worked hard at learning to balance her checkbook, pay her bills in a timely manner and budget her money so that she had money left at the end of each month. Recently, Delia decided to join the YMCA. Delia’s physician suggested it, as Delia wanted tips on how to live a healthier lifestyle. Barb took Delia to the “Y” and showed her all that it offered. Delia decided that she wanted to join and walk the track, also visiting with peers. Delia expressed to Barb that she feels better about herself now and is excited to continue growing in a positive way.

Payton, a Shinning Star Payton is a beautiful 2 1/2-year-old girl living at home with her parents, Zachary and Annie. She is a typical two-year-old – running around the house playing with her toys, watching cartoons and exploring everything. She loves to swing, ride her rocking horse and swim. Payton is an up and coming singing star. During any visit with Payton you can catch her performing one of her favorite tunes.

Payton is a happy little girl who is full of life; however, her journey has had some challenges. Annie had a typical pregnancy and, although long, labor and delivery had no major complications. Payton was sent home from the hospital after three days. She seemed healthy and to be developing just as any other baby Annie knew. It wasn’t until Payton was about 3months-old when friends and family where mentioning that Payton’s eyes were rolling back and crossing frequently. Annie and Zachary still figured she just had not gained control over her eyes yet and it would come as she grows. Annie’s biggest scare came shortly after a normal baby check up when her doctor took one quick look at Payton, thought she was having seizures and rushed them off to Children’s Mercy to see a specialist. It wasn’t until after Payton had undergone several test and seen multiple specialist that seizures were ruled out and she was diagnosed with Optic Nerve Hypoplasia (ONH) or visual impairment.

While working with the doctors at Children’s Mercy, Annie learned of the Missouri First Steps Program. Missouri First Steps services are provided through an Early Intervention Team model for babies and toddlers age birth to three years. Children can qualify for First Steps if they have a diagnosed medical condition associated with developmental delays, or a significant delay in one or more areas of development. Services are provided in the

child’s natural environment, where an early interventionist works directly with the child and family to address the family’s concern with their child’s participation in daily routines. Payton started receiving occupational therapy and special instruction services through First Steps right away. Early interventionist visited Payton in her home weekly.

As Payton started getting older she was becoming more sensitive to her surroundings. She did not like to be touched, touching things or going out to places that were noisy or had crowds of people. It was hard for Annie and Zachary to attend family gatherings, go to a restaurant or take Payton to a birthday party. Annie said that through the help of her Early Intervention Team she was able to learn some of the basics – like constantly talking to Payton to explain to her what is going on around her and using phrases like “it is on your left or right, in front of you or behind you” – for teaching Payton to get around in her environment despite her visual impairment. Payton is now able to tolerate going to parades, birthday parties and attends a gymnastics class at the YMCA. Elecia Eskew, special instructor-mobility specialist, has introduced a walking cane to Payton and has taught her to use it to explore environments outside of her home. Annie stated she was not sure how Payton would do with this, but is happy that she took right off and is using it more and more. Julie Keckler, special instructor, and Liz Ambrose, speech and language pathologist, have been working with Payton and demonstrating hand over hand strategies to help Payton learn to eat independently with special dishes that are high sided and have suction cups on the bottom. Julie Keckler, early intervention specialist, said, “Annie does a good job meeting Payton’s specials needs. She always takes our sugges-

Payton tions and tries to work them into Payton’s everyday routine.”

Payton is quickly approaching three and will be aging out of the First Step Program. Payton’s service coordinator and early intervention team is working closely with local programs to help Payton transition into other educational programs so she may continue to receive services.

Annie said, “I know Payton will have other challenges to overcome, but Payton would not be where she is at today without the help of the providers with First Steps.” Annie says they are blessed to have had all the services and various providers. Payton has grown by leaps and bounds and will continue to overcome any challenge she is faced with.

Steve adds many life experiences Steve Rife has spent most of his life in Marshall. Center for Human Services became involved in Steve’s life in early 2012. At that time, Steve was having doubts about his place in the world and who he was. He also wanted to work so that he could pay his bills. Steve started attending Marshall’s Adult Day Wellness Center. Here, he found friends and people that cared about him and his well-being. They assisted him in self-help skills. Steve called his service coordinator on a regular basis talking about how much he loved going to the wellness center and that the people there were great.

However, he still wanted a job and a better place to live.

Steve was able to put some money aside with help from his team and go winter clothes shopping. Steve wanted to “stay local” as he believed the community had done so much for him he wanted to give back any way that he could. During Steve’s shopping trip, he kept referring to his children and that he just could not feel good about buying himself stuff without buying something for his children. He picked out an outfit and new pair of shoes for each child and had them gift wrapped at the store. He could not wait to get home and call to have them visit so he could give them the gifts.

Steve also needed to find a more economical place to live, somewhere that he could have close neighbors and make friends. Steve and his service coordinator applied at many places and a month later, Steve found an apartment with a much more affordable rate. Steve moved in and started meeting people immediately.

Some of Steve’s friends worked at CWI (CHS Cooperative Workshops, Inc.) and Steve was interested in applying for a job there. CWI had a job available and Steve was called in to interview. He interviewed with the CWI manager and was hired.

Steve is now happier than ever; he has a new home that is affordable, a new job and friends to watch the football games with. A year later, he is still employed with CWI, still has his home and friends. He has also added many life experiences under his belt. He went on his first vacation, which included flying on a plane. He also went to a WWE match and got to buy souvenirs.

He attended the Missouri State Fair with a couple friends. Life is good.
